Dear Friends,

This weekend, the final weekend of Ordinary Time, we honor Jesus Christ as King of the Universe. One truth that we should never forget, be ashamed of, or scandalized by is that our King reigns from the Cross.

In the Gospel of John, we hear an unusual dialogue between Jesus and Nicodemus. In this intimate dialogue Jesus, the Incarnate Word, tells Nicodemus: as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, taking him in this way to the very center of the mystery revealed by God. For it is in view of his Crucifixion that Jesus says: the Son of man must be lifted up on the cross. That is, the mystery of the Son of God who came down from heaven to die on a cross and rise on the third day; and in this way reconciling us with God.

What does ‘to be lifted up’ which the Gospel speaks of, mean?

Well, according to St. Paul in his letter to the Philippians, “to be lifted up” means, first “to be humiliated”. God is humiliated so that man is lifted up. Why? Because God so loved the world. Because He is love! The cross was “lifted” on Golgotha. Jesus, being nailed to the cross, was lifted upon it.

“To be crucified, humanly speaking, is to be disgraced and humiliated. But from God’s point of view it means being lifted up, indeed, by the Cross. Christ is the Lord, and he becomes Lord of everything and everyone [King of the Universe] in this elevation by the Cross. In this way we look upon the Cross, with eyes of faith, instructed by the word of God, guided by the power of God.” (St. John Paul II, Homily at Arizona State University, 9/14/87)

Whoever believes in him, whoever sees in the cross and in the crucifix the King of Kings, the Redeemer of the world, whoever turns, with faith, to the redeeming death of Jesus on the cross, finds in Him the power of eternal life. Sin and evil are defeated by this power. Souls are able to receive the forgiveness of their sins by the price of the sacrifice of Christ.

This is the meaning of the cross of Christ. This is its power. God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that world might be saved through him. The King gave Himself, entirely, for His people.

Those who see this type of commitment are moved to respond in kind. This is the case for countless witnesses of

the faith—martyrs in a particular way. Tomorrow, November 23, we honor a martyr who actually for a short while lived in the Jesuit House in Los Gatos, Bl. Miguel Agustin Pro.

Fr. Pro was a priest who was serving in Mexico during the rule of Plutarco Elías Calles, who vigorously enforced his fiercely anti-clerical Calles Laws, making life dangerous for those priests who chose to still follow their Faith. marry. In this atmosphere of violence Father Pro chose to serve covertly, underground, and came under suspicion. It was during this time that his sense of humor and great Faith came to his aid, for he devised many ways to serve the Mexican people, creating clever disguises– mailman, magician, bricklayer, beggar and more-- to go quietly about the city baptizing, giving the Eucharist, praying over the sick, performing marriage ceremonies, even dressing as a policeman in order to get into jails, to hear confessions and offer the Last Rites.

Ultimately, he was apprehended and sentenced to death. The government thought that they would humiliate him and would discourage people by publishing a photograph of his execution. He had his arms stretched out in the form of a cross, crying out “Viva Cristo Rey!” (Long live Christ the King!) The opposite happened. People took heart from the example of his bravery and his fidelity all the way to the end. It strengthened the resistance of the Catholics of Mexico who had been enduring a bloody and cruel persecution at the hands of the Mexican Government.

He was a martyr who gave everything for Christ the King. He held nothing back, much like the martyrs of every age. He gave all he had.

What do we give to Christ the King? We can pray “thy kingdom come,” but do we make room for Christ the King to rule in our hearts? Do we play tug-of-war with Jesus, “I want this,” or do we say “Fiat, be it done unto me according to your will.” Christ the King is not just a fancy title that we celebrate with all solemnity. It is a reality to be lived out in the practical decisions of our daily life – no matter what it costs us.

Mary, Our Lady of Peace, pray for us,

Fr. Brian

Are You a Registered Parishioner? If you are over the age of 18 and attend Mass here regularly, we encourage you to register as a member of Our

Lady of Peace parish.

Three main reasons why registering is important:

1. Make Sacrament prep easier when the time comes. If you’re not a registered parishioner, this may greatly delay the process.

2. Letters of Recommendation Sometimes there are occasions where letters of recommendations are needed from your parish pastor (ie Catholic school enrollment, scholarships, godparent eligibility, etc.). If you’re not registered, we cannot provide this letter to you or your family.

3. If we as a parish do not know who is out there, how can we serve the needs of all? This includes single people or young families who may not see the need to register.

——— Please note: there is a three (3) month waiting period. Any requests for pastor signatures on any forms, letters, or wedding preparation paperwork will not be processed within the 3 months.

——— Registering is easy! Visit the parish office, or call the

office and leave a voicemail at 408-988-4585, or email [email protected] to request a registration form.
