Dear  Parents and Friends of Calvert Hall,  

Once the students and faculty departed for the summer, we immediately embarked on an ambi ous schedule to address projects, both small and large, on every part of the campus.  In addi on to the usual cleaning, pain ng, and repairs, renova ons to the social studies wing were completed.  A new HVAC system, with air condi oning, was installed.  Classrooms were equipped with new whiteboards, floors, ceilings, and a fresh coat of paint.  New student desks will complement recently refurbished ones.  Technology for teachers and students, especially in the Language Lab, has been enhanced. And of course, the façade of the wing was replaced, offering a more uniform appearance with the rest of the campus with greater energy efficiency.  Back to School Night in September will provide an opportunity to admire the work completed this summer.  The next major project on the horizon?  Replacing the Keelty Hall roof!  

On August 20, Archbishop Lori and Bishop Madden presided at a special mass for educators in the archdiocese as part of a convoca on for Catholic schools.  It was an opportunity to  celebrate the start of a new academic year as well as acknowledge the extraordinary work of our faculty and staff.  Awards were presented to staff members for their dedicated and  faithful years of service.  Among them were Victor Janishefski (45 years); Br. Charles Filberg, FSC (35 years); Lou Eckerl, Michael Magrogan and Catherine Thomas (30 years); Mark  Amatucci and Chuck Stembler (25 years) Mary Bondyra and Andrew Moore (20 years);   Christopher Barczak and Walter Dobrzycki (15 years); Christopher Bengel, Verena Brown and Darrick Freeman (10 years).  Dr. Moore was also recognized with a teaching excellence award.  Collec vely, they have completed 320 remarkable years to Catholic educa on.  All of us at Calvert Hall appreciate and admire all they have done for the young people they have mo vated and inspired.  

As part of our 50th Anniversary in Towson celebra on two years ago, a special Gala was held on campus.   A similar event will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at the Marrio   Waterfront.  The occasion will once again allow our parents, alumni, friends, and faculty and staff  to commemorate Calvert Hall’s dis nguished  legacy.   During the evening, we will also recognize our Hall of Fame members and induct the new members.  I am very grateful to Mr. & Mrs. David Gaudreau, Mr. & Mrs. Jeff Na ans, Mr. & Mrs. Paul Maenner, and Dr. & Mrs. George Grace for agreeing to co‐chair this grand occasion as well as the various commi ee members whose a en on to every detail will ensure that a memorable  me will be had by all.  As we start another exci ng, ac vity‐packed academic year, know that we rely on your  involvement, encouragement, and support.  It is your partnership with us that allows Calvert Hall to con nue its Lasallian mission of addressing the various educa onal needs of our 1200 students.  May God’s special  blessings be with you and your family as the year unfolds.

 Three steps can help your teen take responsibility for learning  It’s 10 o’clock and your teen  hasn’t started his paper. He’s been in his room for hours. But between tex ng his friends and checking out Facebook, his total work out‐put so far is zero.  You want your teen to finish his homework. But you don’t want to spend every minute looking over his shoulder. Here are three things you can do to turn over responsi‐bility for learning to your teen:  1.  Make a weekly homework 

schedule. At the start of the week, grab a calendar and mark off scheduled events, such as appointments,        prac ces and work. Then mark off  me for homework every day. This should be at least a two‐hour block of  me when he will study, review, do   homework or begin a project.  

2.  Eliminate technological    distrac ons. The computer and 

the cell phone are much more interest‐ing than homework. So have him turn them off  during study  me. His phone should not be with him during home‐work  me. He should also finish homework that does not re‐quire the Internet before going online.  

3.  Take breaks. But set how long— and how many—before study  me starts.

As summer was winding down, it seemed like every publica on I picked up had ar cles about the start of the new school year.  Perhaps the most unusual was one ar cle that encouraged parents to “hold a family celebra on to build excitement about the new school year”.  One that gave prac cal advice to parents was “How To Encourage Your High School Student to Do His Best”   The following sugges ons were listed: 1) Talk to your teen about school.  2) Set the expecta ons. Teens need a clear map of what you want them to do.  3) Help him establish goals. Learning to establish goals teaches independence. 4) Have what they need at home, or a way to get it. Resources are important for high school students.  5) Stay involved. Show support for your teen’s school by a ending parents’ nights and other ac vi es or func ons.  6) Set a good example and show him your love of learning ‐ model ac ve learning behaviors like reading or taking classes.  7) Praise your teen for a job well done.        (about.com, New York Times)  

As you think about these sugges ons, you should know that all research studies have  concluded that when parents stay involved with their child during high school their children have higher achievement levels and are more successful.  One way the school helps with this process is by communica ng informa on and holding special events.  First, as you saw with the arrival of this newsle er, it is being sent to you a li le differently than in the past.  Each month you will be sent an email with a link to the newsle er.  This will allow us to present the newsle er in a format that is easier to read.  Second, we have a number of events that will help you get involved. Our annual “Back to School Night” is being held on September 11th at 6:30 PM.  During the course of the evening you will be able to meet your son’s teachers and see the requirements for their course.  Senior Parent College Informa on Night will be held on September 19th at 7 PM.  “The Beginning,” a bonding and celebratory event for the freshmen and their parents, will be held on September 24th at 7 PM.  The Guidance  Department will sponsor a College Fair on September 26th at 7 PM.  Students and their  parents can meet college reps and learn about individual schools.  Your par cipa on at these events and at other student ac vi es will enable you to stay involved in your son’s  educa on.  

At school, we will be developing the theme, “Where Brotherhood Ma ers,” hos ng the  evaluators for the Middle States Accredita on process from October 29th to November 1st and working on our strategic plan.  

As our freshmen and transfer students get acclimated to the school and as our returning  students adjust to new schedules, if we can make things go more smoothly for your son, please do not hesitate to let us know.  

I hope the 2012‐2013 school year goes well for your son and we can all celebrate a successful year next June!

    PHYSICALS 2012‐2013 All incoming students new to Calvert Hall (8th graders and transfer students) must have a complete physical examina on to enter school. TO BE VALID,  these physicals must be dated from June 1, 2012 to July 20, 2013 and must be completed on a Calvert Hall Medical Form provided by the school.   ATHLETIC TEAMS Before trying out for a sport, a student must have a current yearly physical on file with the nurse. Calvert Hall forms are to be used and are available on the website. Only one physical is necessary for both admission and athle cs. All physicals should already be on file as they are to be dated from JUNE 1, 2012 to JULY 20, 2013.  MEDICATION FORMS If your son needs to take a prescrip on medica on during school hours, a  Prescrip on Medica on Form must be completed and signed by the ordering physician. Medica ons must be in the labeled container ‐ your pharmacy will give you an extra. If you would like to have over‐the‐counter medica ons, such as Tylenol, available to your son, please return a completed Over The Counter Medica on Form with both parent/guardian and PHYSICIAN signatures to the school nurse. All forms are available on the CHC website. Students are not  allowed to carry medica ons during school hours unless approved by the nurse.  If you have any ques ons, please call Mrs. Teresa Gentry, School Nurse,  Monday through Friday during school hours at 410‐825‐4266, ext. 120.

Guidance News and Info   For seniors taking the ACT on  September 8, you may take it standby if you do not make the late registra on deadline of  August 24.   The registra on deadline for the October 27 ACT is September 21.   Those taking the SAT or Subject Test on October 6, need to  register by September 7. Free Kaplan prep courses are available. Private tutors are also available from Kaplan. See either Mr. Kerr or Mr. Vernamon  for more  informa on on either prep op on.  Counselors for incoming freshmen are assigned by the student’s last name:  A‐D (Br. Michael Kramer) E‐K (Mr. Mark Amatucci) L‐R (Mr. Joey Atas)  S‐Z (Mrs. Anne Hilgartner)  Following the reloca on to North Carolina of long‐ me CHC  Guidance Administra ve  Assistant, Mrs. DiAnna Young, that posi on has been filled by Mrs. Chris e Grant who will bring her prior school employment  experience to benefit the  Guidance Department this year. We extend a hear elt, Cardinal welcome to Chris e.   

BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT Calvert Hall will host a "Back To School" night for all parents on Tuesday,  September 11, from 6:30 ‐ 9:00 p.m. A er a brief presenta on by members of the school administra on, parents will follow their son's Day #1 schedule of classes. YOUR SON WILL BRING HOME A COPY OF HIS CLASS SCHEDULE, PLEASE BRING IT WITH YOU THAT EVENING.  The schedule for the evening will be: GENERAL MEETING, McMANUS THEATRE 6:30 – 7 p.m. 1st Period 7:05 – 7:15 p.m. 2nd Period 7:20 – 7:30 p.m. 3rd Period 7:35 – 7:45 p.m. 4th Period 7:50 – 8 p.m. 5th Period 8:05 – 8:15 p.m. 6th Period 8:20 – 8:30 p.m. 7th Period 8:35 – 8:45 p.m. 8th Period 8:50 – 9 p.m.  Refreshments will be served during the evening in Russo Dining Hall in Keelty Hall. We encourage your a endance so you will be able to meet your son’s teachers and hear them explain the courses, assignments, goals and grading process.  STUDENT ACADEMIC REPORTS No fica on of student progress or lack thereof will be given to the parents six mes during the school year. You will receive two Interim Reports, with grades 

and comments. The Interim Reports will be issued on the following dates:  Tuesday, December 11, 2012 and Tuesday, April 30, 2013.  Progress Reports, which will contain mid‐semester grades, as well as comments, will be issued on: Friday, November 9, 2012 and Monday, March 18, 2013.  The First Semester Report Card will be issued Monday, February 4, 2013 and the Final Report Card will be mailed home the week of June 17. With the excep on of the Final Report Card, all reports – Interim, Progress and Semester – are given to the students and must be taken home, signed by a parent/guardian and returned to school by the set deadline. Hopefully, these no fica ons of student progress will allow us to work together to help your son reach his full poten al.

3rd Annual Classic Car  and Cra  Show 

    

Saturday, September 29, 2012, 9 a.m.‐2 p.m.  Rain Date: Sunday, September 30, 12‐4:30 p.m.  Spectators are free and everyone is welcome. Stroll through the cra  vendor marketplace to find  crea ve and unique gi s. Food vendors will be available serving pit beef and Maryland special es. The Calvert Hall Jazz Orchestra will provide music and  entertainment all day.  All vehicle makes and models  pre‐da ng 1987 are welcome. The compe on pre‐registra on fee is $10.00 if received by September 15; otherwise, the cost is $15.00 at the gate.   Registra on for car entries takes place from 9‐11 a.m. Dash plaques will be handed out for the first 100 cars to arrive at the event. The awards ceremony  begins at 1:30 p.m. with trophies being awarded in 29 categories, including "Best of Show."  Registra on forms and addi onal informa on are available online on the show's website: www.chccarshow.com or contact Terry Handerhan, CHC Car Show Chair, at chcarshow@gmail.com. Proceeds from this event benefit The Calvert Hall College High School Instrumental Music  Program.

GRADES ONLINE Grades are posted throughout the semester for student and parent viewing.  Parents can view student grades by clicking on the Edline bu on, located at the Parent Portal of the school website. In addi on to the Parent Portal log‐in, Edline requires a separate log‐in.   Log‐in informa on for new students and parents will be sent home early in  September. Teachers will begin ac vely pos ng grades by October 1.  To view grades: Log onto Edline > Click on Content, under Edline homepage >  Choose Private Reports.  HOMEWORK/ASSIGNMENTS/TESTS ONLINE Teachers will post homework, assignments and test informa on online at Edline.  To view teacher pos ngs, log onto Edline > Click on Content on Edline homepage > Choose combined calendar (this calendar is different than the school‐wide  calendar showing on the homepage).  COLLEGE ENTRANCE RESOURCE All Calvert Hall students can now access the Peterson’s Student Edge. This Internet source provides instruc on and prac ce tests for the SAT and ACT. In addi on,  skill‐building exercises on grammar, mathema cs, reading and wri ng are  available. This resource is at the student portal of the CHC website and can also be accessed from home via the school website. Scores on college entrance tests  absolutely can be improved with regular prac ce.  HONORS CONVOCATION The Annual Honors Convoca on will be held on Monday, October 8 at 7:30 p.m. The convoca on, which will be in the McManus Theatre of the Marion Burk Kno  Center, will combine the induc on of new members into the Na onal Honor  Society and the awarding of Academic Cer ficates to those students who excelled in various subject areas during the 2011 – 2012 school year. Parents and friends are invited to a end the ceremony to support and congratulate the students we will be honoring that evening.  HONOR ROLL See Download – Honor Roll January – June 2012

The Student Affairs Office provides per nent informa on for all student ac vi es and conduct during the school year.  

ID / DEBIT CARDS Every student has his picture taken at Orienta on. This picture will appear on the ID / Debit Card, which is used as an ID card and a library card. Addi onally, if a student has opened an account with First Financial Federal Credit Union, he can use the card in the Dining Hall and the Cardinal Shop for purchases. F. Paul Galeone, our school photographer, will also send photo packets home for parents who wish to purchase these pictures. Anyone s ll interested in a Debit Card can download a First  Financial form on Calvert Hall’s website.  

TELEPHONE CALLS TO REPORT ABSENCE, TARDY OR EARLY DISMISSAL We believe that a endance is vital to the educa onal success of our students. Therefore, we ask for parental assistance in making sure your son arrives at Calvert Hall on  me. If your son is going to be absent from school on any given day, please call the A endance Office at 410‐825‐4266, x 119, before 9:30 a.m. Phone calls are also necessary to confirm an early dismissal request or to report a student being tardy a er 8:45 a.m. Please remember to call, as it keeps the communica on lines between the school and parents open. Addi onally, a phone call saves the A endance Office from calling individual parents at home to verify an absence, tardy or early dismissal. Also, on the day your son returns to school, please remember to give him a note for being absent. For your convenience, a sample  a endance note can be found on our website. A note for tardiness and early dismissal is also required. Also, please do not use early dismissals as a no on of convenience in order to allow student  par cipa on in a er‐school ac vi es. Early dismissals count as ½ day absent and should only be used when there is no other alterna ve. Students who miss more than three hours of school will be marked absent for a full day and are not eligible to par cipate in ac vi es that day. Thank you for your  coopera on.  

CHANGE OF ADDRESS If you have changed your address or telephone number recently and have not no fied the school, please do so as soon as possible. Call the Main Office at 410‐825‐4266 to report any changes in your mailing address, telephone number or email address, or update your profile on our website.   

SENIOR PORTRAITS Senior portraits will be taken September 11‐13 for the Cardinal and Gold, the CHC yearbook. Seniors will sign up on September 5‐6 online to schedule a  me for their portrait. Please make sure your son is well‐groomed on the day of his pictures. One pose will be used for the yearbook and packets will be available for purchase by seniors and their parents. Addi onal informa on will be distributed in  homeroom.  

DANCE The first dance of the year will be held on Saturday, September 15 from 7:30 – 11 p.m.  New This Year – The first two dances are for freshmen and sophomores ONLY!  Frosh/Soph guys from CHC and freshmen or sophomore girls from any high school are invited. The dress code, behavior  expecta ons, and appropriate dance guidelines will be discussed with freshmen and are available for all students on the website.  

SENIOR CRAB FEAST The Senior Crab Feast will be on Sunday, September 16. Informa on will be given to seniors through homeroom. Tickets will be on sale on website.

Office of Student Affairs, cont’d.   JUNIOR RING CEREMONY On Tuesday, September 25, a representa ve from J. Jenkins & Sons will be on campus to collect the final payment for junior class rings. Students will be reminded of their balance in homeroom. The  Junior Ring Dance will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 16 in the McManus Theatre of the  Marion Burk Kno  Center.  

SPIRIT SHIRTS One day each month, in celebra on of Calvert Hall ac vi es, students are allowed to wear their spirit shirt instead of a coat,  e and dress shirt. The shirts denote the Student Council theme, “Where Brotherhood Ma ers.” If a student did not order a shirt on the website, he can order one (pre‐paid) in the Student Affairs Office.  

FRESHMAN MENTOR PROGRAM Each freshman has been assigned a faculty mentor. The freshman and faculty mentors met at the orienta on luncheon and will meet again on Wednesday, September 26. If your son has any trouble with the adjustment process, please feel free to contact his mentor, his guidance counselor, his  teachers or a member of the administra on.  

INVOLVEMENT On Friday, September 7, in an effort to help freshmen understand all the ac vity involvement op ons available at Calvert hall, each member of the Class of 2016 will have the opportunity to a end three informa on sessions about the club/athle c ac vi es. Please encourage your son to become involved in the co‐curricular life of the school. Addi onal informa on about our clubs and ac vi es may be found on the “Ac vi es” page of the website.  

FRESHMEN EVENT All freshmen and their parents are invited to “The Beginning” on Monday, September 24 at 7 p.m. This ceremony will welcome the freshmen to the Class of 2016. Parents will receive more details in  mid‐September.  

SAFE ENVIRONMENT TRAINING The Archdiocesan Office of Child and Youth Protec on of the Archdiocese of Bal more conducts safe environment training for all individuals who work with youths. The Archdiocese has two programs – STAND for adult volunteers and Worthy of the Call for volunteers who are minors. Since our students are required to go on service retreats and they also volunteer at many service loca ons in the area, Calvert Hall conducts a Worthy of the Call training session each year for new students. This year a training session will be held in September for all freshmen and transfer students.  

CELL PHONE ZONE Cell phones may be used outside the building before 8:00 a.m. and a er 2:45 p.m. Phones may be used in the building a er 3:30 p.m. and during the day in the plaza of George Young Hall. While we recognize the need for cell phones, we ask all students to turn them off during the school day when not in use.  

DRESS CODE As noted in the summer mailing, plaid shirts are not considered dress shirts.  If your son has any  ques ons about whether a shirt is appropriate, please have him see Kris Mitchell, Dean of Students.  We will further ar culate our policy to the students, during the month of September, so it is clear to all.  

THEME FOR THE YEAR As was indicated in the calendar le er, the theme for the year, “Where Brotherhood Ma ers,” is a recogni on of what most students value about being at CHC.  They feel a connec on to the school, a sense of bond and community, and ul mately brotherhood.  The theme also challenges us to examine how we treat each other and how we include all members of our community.  If you son does not feel he is being treated well by others or is not connec ng to the school, please call us.  We want  everyone to have a great experience!

A Message from The Parents’ Club

 

The Alumni Associa on  The Alumni Associa on was  established to foster and  perpetuate good fellowship among the Alumni, advance the interest of the school, and keep the Alumni aware of the events of the school.  Membership is open to all who have graduated or have a ended Calvert Hall for at least two years. The Board of Directors and officers serve a term of two years.  The board meets at 6:30 PM on the second Wednesday of each month (except July and August) in the lower level Recrea on Room at the Brothers' Residence. A light dinner is served before the mee ng.  These mee ngs are open and all are invited and encouraged to a end.  Dues in the Associa on are $30 a year. Alumni can pay their dues on‐line.   THE CARDINAL, which includes Alumni News, is published two mes a year. Graduates are

        September Events:   Men of Calvert Hall General Mee ng Thursday, September 13, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. in the BROTHERS’ RESIDENCE—LOWER LEVEL. The Men of Calvert Hall welcome all fathers and/or guardians of Calvert Hall students to join us for our first mee ng of this school year. It is a great way to meet fellow dads and get involved. The MoCH wants to keep you informed of mee ng dates, upcoming events and other rewarding ac vi es. If you would like to receive emails from MoCH, please send a short note to menofcalverthall@gmail.com.   Freshmen Welcome Saturday, September 22nd at noon in the Paul Angelo Russo Stadium The Men of Calvert Hall welcome all new freshmen and their fathers and/or male guardians before the Varsity Football game against Niagara H.S. This is a  get‐acquainted event to welcome the freshmen class and receive informa on  regarding the Men of Calvert Hall and their planned events for upcoming school year. All freshmen students and their fathers and/or male guardians will receive a free lunch and free admission to the football game. Please enter through the  stadium gate near the concession stand.   Concession Stand Help for Varsity Football The Men of Calvert Hall provide concession stand assistance for all home Varsity Football games throughout the year. Help consists of cooking and wrapping the food prior to the game and suppor ng the concession stand during the games.  If you are able to volunteer for the games, please send an email to the  menofcalverthall@gmail.com.   Help is needed on the following dates:
