I feel as though the first 11 months of 2017 have come and gone in a flash. Hopefully, memories have been made, saved, and many more are in the works; but now our attention must turn to the season. As is often the case for the world, Christmas promos started long before Thanksgiving. This wouldn’t be so bad if the motivation for such advertisement was not for the sheer propulsion of consumerism. I love Christmas, but if it were not for the season of Advent the meaning would often be lost. Advent is a time of celebration and anticipation of Christ’s birth, but it is more than that. It is only in the shadow of Advent that the miracle of Christmas can be fully understood and appreciated; and it is only in the light of Christmas that the Christian life makes any sense. It is between the fulfilled promise of Christ’s first coming, and the yet -to-be-fulfilled promise of his second coming, that the great theologian Karl Barth said these words: “Unfulfilled and fulfilled promises are related to each other, as are dawn and sunrise. Both are promises and in fact the same promise. If anywhere at all, then it is precisely in the light of the coming of Christ that faith has become Advent faith, the expectation of future revelation. But faith knows for whom and for what it is waiting. It is fulfilled faith because it lays hold on the fulfilled promise.” The promise for Israel was the same as the promise for the church. That promise is Jesus Christ; he has come, and he will come again. This is the essence of Advent. When we fully encounter the Advent season, we in turn fully encounter the Christmastide. Encountering Christmas in a way that embraces Christ then prepares us for making the next year a year that reflects the Glory of God. As we head full force into this season, may our hearts be guarded from consumerism and prone to worship Christ the King. Faithfully Yours, Fr. A sign-up sheet is in the Narthex for Poinsettias. There are only 25 plants available. The cost is $15 each. Please make your check payable to Holy Cross, noting “for Poinsettia,” and place in the offering plate.

Washer & Dryer We are in search of a

used washer and/or

dryer for the family of a

recent Lovelady Center

graduate. For more info,

please contact Cindy

Wester at 706-7187.

ECW will meet on Wednesday,

January 24th at 11:45 am in the Genesis Room. Please bring your own sandwich. Salad, tea, and dessert will be provided.

The Angel Tree at Holy Cross is aiding five

families this year. Many angels have been taken,

but there are still many angels, as well as food gift

cards for the taking.

When choosing your angel, please note the angel’s number, then sign

for that angel on the list on the table beside the tree. This helps the Angel

Tree Committee to follow-up in the event you might be running late.

After signing for your angel, please hang an ornament on the tree. If

you would like to help with a gift but do not like to shop, cash or check

donations are welcome, too! (Be sure to note “for Angel Tree” on

checks.)

Please deliver the wrapped gifts, with the angel affixed to the outside

of the wrapped gift, to the church no later than December 17th

.

Another opportunity to help with the Angel Tree outreach is through

the delivery of the gifts to the families. Deliveries are scheduled for

December 21st-23

rd. If interested, please contact Bonnie Powers at 500-

9328.

ECW annual dues of $12.00 are due for 2018. Checks should be made payable to Holy Cross ECW and placed in our mail slot or given to Karen Bain. This money helps with the many projects ECW does for Holy Cross and other ministries. Thank you.

THE VONHERBULIS FAMILY & THE AGRICULTURAL MINISTRY IN RWANDA

Matthew and Karli VonHerbulis, with their children, Hallelujah (3 years) and

Shepherd (11 months), live and serve in Rwanda. They work for the local church

rural parishes through investments in Education, Nutrition, and Evangelism.

Specifically, Matthew directs the Agriculture program focused on restoring dignity

to farming by teaching it as an important ministry of the church.

Through a hands on “Agri-Faith” field school, he is training farmers in sustainable agriculture, agribusiness,

nutrition, hygiene, and environmental stewardship, then sending those farmers out as catalysts for economic,

environmental, nutritional and spiritual growth in their local villages.

On Sunday, December 17th

, the VonHerbulis Family will come to tell us about their ministry and the

opportunities to partner with this exciting work next year.

You can learn more about their ministry at: www.hopeonathousandhills.org or visit their blog at:

Ever wonder how all the various forms of communication happen at Holy Cross? Well, wonder no more…Phillip Johnson has recently agreed to fill a major volunteer role at Holy Cross to improve and enhance our communication efforts. Phillip will help keep our Facebook page active, send weekly email updates, and even engage the “twitter sphere” (for those less familiar with social media, Twitter is a means of sending short bursts of information to those who follow along regularly). Keep an eye out for the many new and improved communication sources to make sure you are “in the know” when it comes to Holy Cross news.

LLAADDIIEESS’’ NNIIGGHHTT OOUUTT The Ladies’ Night Out group will not be meeting in December. We will resume in January.
