Rod Pumping System Failure Frequency and Failure Analysis

Breakout Session

Sept. 17 - 20, 2013 2013 Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 2

Comments• We need a systematic process for

what comes first – Parted rods, stuck pump…– How to define what really happened first when

there is no clear understanding

• The initial reason for pull (prior to the rig showing up) does not always match the actual reason for the pull (which is known when the job is complete)

Sept. 17 - 20, 2013 2013 Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 3

Comments• Questions about Pump Shop integrity

– Sometimes it seems that parts are replaced all of the time. • Was the pump failure the reason for pulling the

well?

• Some parts no longer meet specs (regardless why the well was pulled)

• Some parts failed and caused the well to be pulled

Sept. 17 - 20, 2013 2013 Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 4

Comments• Same Operator said they started

unannounced audits of pump shop – focusing on already repaired pumps– Checking workmanship and invoice accuracy

• Does the pump shop have written specs that are approved by the Operator? Most replied “no”.

Sept. 17 - 20, 2013 2013 Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 5

Comments• Two companies said they were new

Operators to a field– Understanding the history is not always easy

– One has good information coming from pump shop on historical events

• Where do failed samples go? Who controls them?– Chemical and Pump Companies should bring

to Operator for review and disposal

Sept. 17 - 20, 2013 2013 Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 6

Comments• Short Run Time wells should get

special attention– Decisions made before rig arrives

– Possibly bringing two pump designs to location, tear down pulled pump and decide which of the two is run

– Shut rig down while pump is taken to the shop for inspection

– Shut rig down while decisions are made

Sept. 17 - 20, 2013 2013 Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 7

Comments• Sometimes it is difficult to explain or

justify shutting down a rig while decisions are made

• Originally trying to be proactive was replaced by becoming completely reactive

• One Operator charges rig downtime to Reliability Team while decisions are being made

Sept. 17 - 20, 2013 2013 Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 8

Comments• ESP Service Company said they have

a focus on determining root cause

• He also said sometimes the customer comes to their shop to witness a teardown. Sometimes this turns into a productive meeting with good dialogue
