A word from the President
2
ermit me to welcome the new residents who have joined us in the last year and to speak to them.
From the point of view of environmental protection, an association was created more than 26 years ago at Cam-eron Lake.
This association, AVEC Cameron (association des villégiateurs des en-virons du lac Cameron) was and is in-tended to protect the environment, to educate and sensitize its members and citi-zens to the problems of the protection of nature.
The financial operation of the association is pro-vided by voluntary contributions, non-recurrent grants and advertising.
The association is managed by a Board of Direc-tors consisting of 9 elected members.
The association works with various stakeholders, including Ministries, municipalities, organiza-tions such as the Council of the Environment of the Laurentians, and most importantly, the resi-dents.
For example, the physicochemical tests of Cam-eron Lake are made according to the criteria of the VLMP which reports to the Ministry of the Environment. Each year, tests reveal the picture of the health of Cameron Lake. More technically, the results of the 2017 season are presented in this electronic edition of Le Relais.
Another example; this year the CRE of Lauren-tides offers associations of the lakes of Amherst support for combating milfoil. The installation of signs on the aquatic invasive of exotic plants at the entrances to the lake is part of this support.
A code of ethics was voted for in 2015 and dis-tributed to residents of the Lake. This code is mostly respected and thank you, especially to all those who use the middle of the lake to practice
their favorite sports. You participate in the pro-tection of the banks by reducing erosion.
Another folder; the lake is in good health accord-ing to the compilation of reports
from several previous years. The results of the analyses confirm that the lake is 'oli-
gotrophic' which could not be more reassuring and encourag-
ing.
For information on the progress of our projects, you are invited to the General As-
sembly of AVEC at the beginning of the summer season. In addition, a newsletter in the form of newspaper, named Le Relais, the one you're read-ing, is sent electronically four times annually at the email address you provide to us when you register.
You can become a member by registering on ar-rival at the General Assembly or during the mem-bership drive when a team of volunteers collect your voluntary contribution that makes you a member of your association.
Our work at the AC runs not only in summer, but throughout the year. For example, we attended a meeting of the CRE Laurentians last fall com-bined with another this spring in their project to combat exotic plants. Also, this summer during the membership drive, a guide on milfoil entitled Be Aware will be distributed to local residents.
I encourage you to follow us in our efforts by be-coming a member of your association. Thus you participate in keeping our water in the state that it is, and keeping its uses, not only for us but also for our future generations.
To you all, I wish you an excellent summer sea-son.
Robert Cardinal, President

The results of water tests recently came from the Ministry of the Environment.
The results differ somewhat in recent years.
The rate of phosphorus total has never been so low at 1.4 µg/l on a multi-year average of 3.4 µg/l.
The concentration of dissolved organic carbon is slightly higher at 4.3 mg/l on an average of 3.9 mg/l.
As to the concentration of chlorophyll 'a', the rate is close to the average of 1.4 µg/l at 1, 3µ/l. How-ever, last year there were only 2 samples taken unlike 3 for past years. Therefore, take the 2017 results with a grain of salt.
As for the statement of transparency, the result which appeared in December 2017 Relais, is 6.8 m for a multi-year average of 6.6 m.

The cleanup day took place on Sunday May 20. Unfortunately, the lack of volun-teers meant Cameron Lake could not be done in full. Only six people attended this year’s gathering. We thank them for their time and dedication.
It is worth noting that there is little debris in ditches. However, despite the growing number of beer cans and liquor bottles, this year it was the festival of small bottles of Chemineau and Bacardi that have stolen the spotlight. Fifty of these little bottles were picked up in a distance of only about a kilometer.
An amazing thing that we had not seen over the past years, non-domestic debris was left in the open woods, not far from the road. Some people have yet to understand the principle of the environment, but there is always hope.
All in all, a small effort can make a differ-ence. The cleanup will return in two years. In the meantime, we encourage residents to do their part while out on their daily stroll.
Thanks again to the volunteers and the mu-nicipality.

For several years, we are fortunate to have had the participation of Mrs. Pauline Gauthier in the collection of contributions.
She is dedicated, friendly and engaging with every one of her rounds. And her 2017 collection was no exception.
She is a big help in the operation of your associ-ation. Indeed, without your voluntary contribu-tions, it would be very difficult, if not impossible, to operate.
Thank you Pauline, and we hope we have your help for many years to come.

The regional project to combat the milfoil, run by the regional Council of the environment of the Laurentians, organizes training on aquatic plants on June 22. The detection protocol will be pre-sented as well as a follow-up on invasive exotic aquatic plants and native species listed in our lakes.
Your association representatives will be there.
Another project in the fight against milfoil. The Laurentians CRE has created a guide on milfoil. This guide summarizes the infor-mation necessary to recognize the milfoil among the species of plants naturally present in our lakes.
This guide provides recommendations on how to avoid transporting this exotic plant from one body of water to an-other to prevent its spread.
Your association has ordered several copies which will be distributed during the annual mem-bership drive in summer of 2018.

In recent years, your association has created a code of ethics for local residents.
Point 10 of the code states as follows: practise wakeboarding, surfing and jet skiing only in the middle of the lake, away from and perpendicular to the banks. We find that boaters respect this practice more and more.
Once again, we are publishing the ethics code in this edition.
Please note that the code has been created to raise cottagers’ awareness that there are things to be done for the health of the lake and that common sense prevails in the application of the code of ethics.
This code will apply only if the majority of vaca-tioners respect it. Thank you residents for your cooperation.
Robert Cardinal
For the year 2017, the record shows 248 cases of Lyme disease reported and acquired in Quebec.
The most affected region is l’Estrie with 122 cases. In the Laurentians, the number is 8 cases contracted in Québec. If we count those infected outside Québec, the total for the province is 327 cases. For the Laurentians, the first case appeared in 2014.
