A HISTORY OF THE PEORIA PARK DISTRICT
Why a documentary about the Peoria Park District, and why now? One reason is that the PPD has been around for 125 years — longer than any other public park district in Illinois. Another good reason is that the properties and facilities that make up the PPD are something that we can all point to with pride.
What began as a scattering of private and city-operated parks in the late 19th century has turned into a 21st century network of recreation opportunities for all of Central Illinois to enjoy. From the original ornate concept for Glen Oak Park, to the rugged wilderness of Detweiller Park, the goal of the district has always been to continually meet the needs of the public by shaping and reinventing how these land resources are used and preserved.
Peoria’s Playground: A History of the Peoria Park District looks back at the rich history of the parks, celebrates what they are today, and looks ahead at how they will continue to evolve and serve the community.
Municipal Band concerts at the Glen Oak Park Amphitheatre. Later, I was helping to
the park.
Running sound at the Amphitheatre became a part-time summer job during my college years. After college, I began working at WTVP but kept my summer evenings free so I could continue to work and enjoy great outdoor music and events. After a time, I began doing other sound-related jobs for the park, the ice rinks at Owens Center, and a theme park-style system for the Africa exhibit at the Peoria Zoo. Twenty-seven years later, I still love my “part-time” job with the PPD.
Making Peoria’s Playgroundas enjoyable as I do and will join us in celebrating all they will continue to do to enhance the quality of life here in Central Illinois. See it March 12 at 7 PM.

Remember in the movie Monsters Inc., when they discovered they could power the world with the laughter of children? That’s all fantasy, of course, but it’s not far from the truth. To me, nothing is more inspiring or more infectious than the laughter of a happy child. As the President and CEO of WTVP, I get to interact with kids on a regular basis, and I know that our PBS KIDS programming is having an impact when I hear the giggles, see the smiles and know that WTVP is making learning fun.
Laughter is the best medicine for adults, too, so I didn’t hesitate when Mayor Jim Ardis
survive a few hours of good-natured humor, especially when I know that proceeds from the event will help WTVP Children’s Charities bring the power of media into the classroom and open new doors to learning.
The future of our children is no laughing matter. So why not join business leaders, dignitaries, family and friends as we all laugh (at my expense) at the Mayor’s Annual Roast, April 1, at the Peoria Civic Center Ballroom. The jokes are on me, but you can contact Angie Spears at 309-495-0561 or [email protected] for tickets and sponsorships.

EAST LAKE MEADOWS: A PUBLIC HOUSING STORY
WTVP continues its tradition of enlightening documentary programming with the premiere of EAST LAKE MEADOWS: A PUBLIC HOUSING STORY, a
Ken Burns. In 1970, the Atlanta Housing Authority opened a public housing community called East Lake Meadows on the edge of the city. But as public housing in America was abandoned and stigmatized, and a crack wave swept through the neighborhood, East Lake Meadows became nearly uninhabitable. In the mid-1990s, Atlanta bulldozed the housing project to make way for new, mixed-income housing. Through the stories of former residents, EAST LAKE MEADOWS raises critical questions about concentrated poverty and limited housing opportunity for African Americans, and what can be done to address it.

WILLIAM BAKER WTVP Production
To be honest, I could not carry a tune if my life depended on it. And yet music has always been a part of my life. Before sound came to Hollywood my grandmother played piano in local theaters to accompany movies, and my youngest child, who played cello in high school, now writes original compositions. Both applied their skills here in Peoria.
Across Central Illinois, talented individuals and groups perform music in a variety of venues. One of them is the WTVP studio on the series State and Water. When season four begins Saturday, March 21 at 10 PM, regular viewers will notice a new look and a re-dedication to showcasing the variety of our local and regional musical artists.
That’s what WTVP does so well: highlights what makes Central Illinois a special place whether through performance specials, features on unique individuals or documentaries that recall our shared past. I am proud of the local programs we produce, and our members should be, too. It is because of your support that WTVP can continue to present the diversity and uniqueness of our home for all to share.
Join us every Saturday night at 10 PM to experience State & Water.

ANDREW A. RAND Chairman, WTVP Board of Directors
One of the things I like so much about local programming on WTVP is how committed our award-winning production team is to producing meaningful content for our viewers. Locally produced programs like Peoria’s Playground: A History of the Peoria Park District, Lydia: Ahead of Her Time and The Art of Deception, have a unique and powerful connection to the people of Central Illinois. And that’s precisely what makes them so empowering to our team of writers, videographers and producers. Local programming also underscores something unique about WTVP; we are Central Illinois’ only truly local television station.
WTVP is committed to spotlighting the future of our communities by bringing the past to life and showcasing our best entertainment, arts and education. We’ve been doing it for many years and will continue as long as we have the enthusiastic support of our members, underwriters and viewers.
Keep watching WTVPpeople and places of Central Illinois. Please let us know how we can bring locally important content to you.
