Principal’s Report

Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members

Last week I was in Sydney at the 2019 NSW Primary Principals Conference. At the conference we heard from a variety of speakers including the current NSW Education Minister, Sarah Mitchell. We also heard from Brad Marshall, the Clinical Director of the Internet Addiction Clinic at Kidspace. He spoke about how addiction occurs and steps that can be taken by schools, parents and students to aid in overcoming such addictions. He has a blog which you can follow called the Unplugged Psychologist which gives tips to parents and carers around screen, internet and gaming for children.

Last Week at LPS

Walkathon Last Friday we held the annual Walkathon under warm conditions. The day was successful with $3,118.25 already being raised. This money will go towards the purchase of further home and class readers across the school.

A big thank you to everyone who has sponsored students for this event.

This Week at LPS

P&C Meeting – Tuesday 5th November – 7:30pm

The next P&C meeting will be held on Tuesday 5th November commencing at 7:30pm in the Primary Staff room. All interested Parents and community members are invited to attend this meeting.

Music Count Us In – Thursday 7th November

This Thursday students from LPS will be involved in the National Celebration Day when more than half a million students sing the same song, on the same day, at the same time – the annual Program Song. It is a song written by students, for students. The 2019 Program Song is called ‘We Are’ and will involve over 745,000 students from more than 3,400 schools all around Australia celebrating the value of music education.

Student Attendance in Government Schools

Regular attendance at school for every student is essential for them to achieve their potential. Parents and Carers are legally responsible for the regular attendance of their child/ren. Any day your child is absent from school is required to be reported to the school within 7 days by a parent or carer. A justifiable explanation of the absence should be provided. Principals are legally responsible for keeping accurate records of student attendance. Principals are also responsible for deciding if the reason given for an absence is justified. For this reason, Principals may request medical certificates or other documentation for long or frequent absences explained by parents as being due to illness. If Principals don’t consider an explanation to be satisfactory, they will record the absence as unjustified.

Please assist the school with making sure you advise your child’s classroom teacher or the school office on the day your child is absent or by using the School App to put in a note of explanation.

A reminder to all parents that this time of the year is extremely busy with many events scheduled. Events are listed on the Calendar on this newsletter along with the calendar on the school website.

As always I encourage open channels of communication between the home and school. Parents are encouraged to contact the school office to make an appointment to discuss any matters regarding their child's education with the relevant teacher or Assistant Principal.

S2 Soccer Gala Day

Stage 2 students, as part of the Leeton-Narrandera Public School Association (LNPSSA), participated in a Soccer Gala Day in Narrandera. They played last Friday amongst their peers from Narrandera, Parkview, Yanco, Wamoon and Whitton/Murrami schools.

Student Reviews

Thank you everyone for a good day. We all had lots of fun and learnt lots. It was a bit challenging for some people. We had a chance to meet new people. We would like to say good luck to the people next year.

The soccer gala day was lots of fun and a very exciting day.

The day was very challenging but also very good for people who don't normally play soccer and also so we can learn more/new skills and just have a go in general.

Pinking it up with Jane McGrath Foundation

A huge thanks goes to the very enthusiastic

SRC members and parents who wonderfully

contributed their time to

produce a variety of lavish,

delicious pink patty cakes!

We raised a sensational $904.00. Thank you to all students

who supported this fundraiser.

Learn to Swim/ Water Survival Challenge

This week all students in Years 2 to 6 will bring home either a Learn to Swim or Water

Survival Challenge note.

Learn to Swim notes (blue) will go to all Year 2 children regardless of

ability. Those who are already competent swimmers will practise a range of strokes and

work on building stamina. Children in years 3 to 6 who cannot confidently swim 50m

freestyle will also receive a Learn to Swim note. I have used last year’s records to

determine who should attend. If your child had further lessons last year and can now

swim 50m please request a Water Survival note instead.

If there is any parent of a Yr3 to 6 student who thinks their child needs further skill

practice, even if they can just make the 50m, feel free to request a space in our Learn

to Swim program.

Dates: Learn to Swim will be daily for two weeks - 25th November to 6th December.

Cost: $57.00 covering bus fare and pool entry. $22.00 for bus fare only for Season Ticket holders.

Water Survival Challenge notes (yellow) will go to children in years 3 to 6 who can confidently swim

50m freestyle, without stopping or losing stroke shape, for testing. This assessment is because we need to know who will be

allowed access to the 50m pool at Narrandera for our end of year free swimming day. Children will also be tested by the

lifeguards at Narrandera on our party day.

Students who pass the challenge will also be taking part in three stroke correction and practice plus lifesaving drill sessions in

Week 9.

I recommend that all children about to take the Water Survival Challenge go to the pool a few times before they sit the challenge and swim a few lengths of the pool!

Date: Water Survival Challenge Friday 22nd November. Please note students attending School Spectacular will sit the WSC on

Friday 6th December.

Cost: $6.70 for bus fare and pool entry or $3.20 bus fare only for Season Ticket holders.

Details: Further details as to what to take to the pool, times attending and staff involved will be on the permission notes.
