We trust our plans to hold the School Development Day at this me provides an opportunity for you all to make a head start on the WA Day Long Weekend. As for staff, they will be aending sessions covering records management, a whole school approach to achieving the Naonal Quality Standard in Early Childhood Educaon, Posive Behaviour Support Lesson Planning and Incorporang Digital Technologies into the Mathemacs Curriculum at school on this day. When we return from the Long Weekend, David from the Fathering Project has organised a woodworking acvity for fathers and father figures and their children. Unfortunately, all places for this acvity have already been filled but I will be speaking with David about a further opportunity for those fathers and father figures on our waitlist. For those families lucky enough to secure one of the 20 places available on Tuesday 5 June, we look forward to seeing you at 5:30pm in the school library. Last Friday, Room 5 entertained us all with a Rap Song they had wrien and rehearsed based on the messages being delivered by our new school mascot, Maali. The Rap Song showed the difference Maali and his messages were making to the behaviour of students, which in turn has made our classrooms and playgrounds beer and safer for all of us. I would like to take this opportunity to extend some of Maali’s ‘Be Safe’ messages to parents and carers who pick up and drop off students at our school. First of all I would like to remind everyone that dogs and other pets are not permied on school grounds, unless previously approved by the Principal of the school. There have been a number of occasions recently where adults have brought dogs to school at the end of the day and while they were on a leash, not all our students are used to dogs and many do not feel safe around them. Dear Parents and Care Givers,

It is hard to believe that by the time you read this we will have reached ‘hump day’ and will be making our way through the final 4½ weeks of Term Two!

This Friday 1 June we will be holding a School Development Day at Gosnells Primary School. We trust our plans to hold the School Development Day at this time provides an opportunity for you all to make a head start on the WA Day Long Weekend. As for staff, they will be attending sessions covering records management, a whole school approach to

achieving the National Quality Standard in Early Childhood Education, Positive Behaviour Support Lesson Planning and Incorporating Digital Technologies into the Mathematics Curriculum at school on this day.

When we return from the Long Weekend, David from the Fathering Project has organised a woodworking activity for fathers and father figures and their children. Unfortunately, all places for this activity have already been filled but I will be speaking with David about a further opportunity for those fathers and father figures on our waitlist. For those families lucky enough to secure one of the 20 places available on Tuesday 5 June, we look forward to seeing you at 5:30pm in the school library.

Last Friday, Room 5 entertained us all with a Rap Song they had written and rehearsed based on the messages being delivered by our new school mascot, Maali. The Rap Song showed the difference Maali and his messages were making to the behaviour of students, which in turn has made our classrooms and playgrounds better and safer for all of us. I would like to take this opportunity to extend some of Maali’s ‘Be Safe’ messages to parents and carers who pick up and drop off students at our school.

First of all I would like to remind everyone that dogs and other pets are not permitted on school grounds, unless previously approved by the Principal of the school. There have been a number of occasions recently where adults have brought dogs to school at the end of the day and while they were on a leash, not all our students are used to dogs and many do not feel safe around them. Please be respectful of others and ensure dogs are left at home during pick up and drop off times;

Despite constant requests from a number of staff, some parents are still hanging around the junior playground after school, allowing their students to play on and with the equipment. Students are not permitted to play on or with equipment before or after school as our playgrounds are not supervised at this time, making it unsafe for them to do so. We urge all parents collecting their children at the end of the day to do so promptly and take them to nearby Mary Carroll Park if they wish to climb and play a little more before heading home;

Finally I would ask all parents to be Responsible, Respectful and above all else Safe when picking up and

dropping off students at school. We are well aware of the parking issues surrounding our school, but this is no excuse to put the lives of our students at risk. I often see cars double parked, parked in driveways and stopped in the middle of the street to pick up and drop off children. It is only a matter of time before we are dealing with a tragic accident if this behaviour continues. Another concern I have is the number of students left to cross these busy streets without an adult. Did you know the ‘experts’ recommend that no child should be crossing the road without an adult until they are at least 10 years old? If you are parking on the opposite side of May Street at the end of the day, you really should be meeting your children at the gates to the school and not expecting them to cross the road unattended to your parked vehicle. We are not asking people to change their behaviour to be difficult, we are simply looking out for the safety of all students and this requires everyone’s support.

Maali’s message is clear to everyone; at Gosnells Primary School we expect everybody to Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe and Be Better in everything they do, every day. Regards

Craig

PRIDE POINT AWARDS As part of our Music program this term your child will be making an instrument out of recyclable materials in order to study the qualities of sound that different materials can make in different forms.

Over the past few weeks I have been asking students to look for recyclable items at home and save any they might like to use. Students can now bring the items they plan to use to school with their name and room number on it as next week (Week 6) we will begin construction of our instruments.

Thank you for your assistance.

DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH SURVEY Help the Department of Health to improve school-aged health services. Do you have a child aged between three and 18? Child and Adolescent Community Health and WA Country Health Service are reviewing the community health services provided to school-aged children across Western Australia. You are invited to complete a short survey to help them understand what is important to you, what is working well and what could be made better. For more information and to complete the survey, visit http://healthywa.wa.gov.au/Schoolhealth-services. The survey closes on Friday 8 June.
