welcome to this edition of Truck Power. What a difference a few weeks can make in Canberra – there’s a change of tenancy at The Lodge, and in a few weeks there’s likely to be a fresh face in there if you believe the political commentators.

The first occupier of The Lodge was Prime Minister Stanley Melbourne Bruce, who moved into the Georgian Revivalist mansion shortly after completion in 1927. One wonders what Stan would think about potentially having three different Prime Minsters living within its walls within a calendar year?

Among Bruce’s most important political achievements was overseeing a comprehensive nation-building program and modernising cabinet by applying business principles to the way it operated. Perhaps it was a simpler time, there was no NBN, boats, same sex marriage or carbon tax to negotiate, but he and many other politicians of the time had genuine vision and relished the opportunity to serve in public life for the betterment of the nation. I’m not sure that the same could be said about all the current crop of ‘pollies’.

With Australia weathering the financial storm relatively well in recent years, the missing boost that’s needed to finally shake the darn thing off is strong governance. Let’s hope that whoever ends up in The Lodge in coming months can muster the spirits of more visionary political forbears.

As mentioned, our country has navigated the worst parts of the storm and business prospects are slowly improving. Truck sales are also improving. In the 2012 - 2013 Summer edition of Truck Power we brought you a special feature on Isuzu’s new FY Series 8x4 range. We were very pleased with the specification level of the range and were confident it would impact the market, and make its presence felt.

In past months there’s been a tremendous amount of enquiry about the new models with a good amount of these turning into orders and deliveries, and ultimately entry into fleets and work sites all over the country. In this edition of the magazine we catch up with two Isuzu customers who have put the FY Series to work in demanding agitator applications. One of these vehicles has found a home with HY-TEC concrete in Sydney and the other in the harsh and unforgiving terrain of outback Western Australia, with Pilbara Concrete Service. By all accounts FY Series trucks out in the field are performing well and we look forward to bringing you more FY Series stories in coming editions.

One of our other stories is ‘1800-GOT-JUNK?’ and its fleet of N Series trucks. It’s amazing to see what some people throw out as you’ll read about. The company started in Vancouver almost 25 years ago and has since expanded to several countries around the world including Australia.

On a more leisurely note, we cancel the papers, redirect the mail and join the SKI (spending kids’ inheritance) club as we take to the road with Avida motorhomes. Not familiar with Avida? How about Winnebago? Winnebago recently rebranded to Avida in an effort to better capture the Australian essence and attitude of the motorhomes it manufacturers.

In the last of our feature stories we come face to face with a South Australian success story, KJM Contractors, a transport and logistics supplier to the mining industry. In 2002 the company owner worked as a sole subcontractor, fast forward 10 years and KJM now employs an amazing 470 staff! That’s entrepreneurship.

Another interesting inclusion in this edition of the magazine is an article in our ‘Industry Insider’ page, penned by professional road tester, journalist and 2007 Young Australian Truck Driver competition winner, Dave Whyte. In the piece, Dave shares his thoughts on driver training and the benefits that this can provide for a business’ bottom line. It makes for some compelling reading.

Of course this edition also contains all the other regular Truck Power pages so please enjoy the read.

2013 isuzu n and f seRies pRemieRe aT The bRisbane TRuck show

Isuzu featured one of the largest exhibits at the 2013 Brisbane Truck Show in May with a comprehensive display which included the recently released 2013 N and F Series ranges along with the impressive new FYJ 2000 twin steer 8x4 model. The gleaming FYJ 2000 in full agitator trim including 7.5 m3 bowl generated significant interest among visitors, continuing the impact the new model range has made since being launched late last year.

Several FY Series trucks have already gone into service since the heavy duty range was launched earlier this year (read more in this edition).

A pioneer of the ‘ready-to-work’ concept, Isuzu also featured no less than five factory-bodied models that can virtually be driven from the Dealership floor to the work site* - there’s no waiting for bodybuilders.

The factory-bodied models on show were the NPR 300, NLR 275, NQR 450 and FRR 500 Tippers along with the NPR 200 Tradepack which features an aluminium body with dropsides, tradesman racks, bullbar and more.

Isuzu’s off road range was represented by the NPS 300 4x4 and the FTS 800 Auto, a favoured appliance by many of the country’s firefighting and emergency services.

The extensive truck line-up was complemented with a selection of displays covering Isuzu Genuine Parts and Best Value Parts (BVP) and Isuzu industrial engines.

Isuzu’s new merchandise range along with the highly-anticipated ‘heritage collection’ also broke cover at the show.

Also on show was a fully interactive Digital Audio Visual Equipment (DAVE) system, which allowed visitors to experience the many features of the unit which comes complete with 6.2 inch touchscreen. The DAVE system is standard on all 2013 Isuzu models.

as Australia’s only one-stop shop remote area specialist, KJM Contractors is the transport and logistics supplier of choice for the mining, exploration and

geothermal industries.

KJM Contractors provides a wide range of services to remote mine sites across Australia. Its services include regular air charter flights, transport runs, heavy haulage, engineering and fully serviced camp hire for remote areas. This includes rubbish removal, crude oil, water and effluent cartage.

In addition, the company offers Australia-wide hot shot services - complete red-hot urgent deliveries of required materials to mine sites and drilling rigs.

KJM Contractors’ booming business has come a long way since its humble beginnings. In 1992, the company only consisted of Director, Kim John McNamara, working as a sub-contractor with just one truck.

In 2002, when Mr McNamara was becoming dissatisfied with working as a sole sub-contractor, he was awarded his first contract to a mine site, the Challenger gold mine, for its open-cut and underground mining operations. His company grew in leaps and bounds from then on.

It was in that year that KJM Contractors obtained its first Isuzu truck, an FRR 500 Long, which is still in daily use and is still running well at 768,305 kilometres.

KJM Contractors now employs 470 staff and operates out of a head office in Adelaide in addition to offices in Brisbane, Roma and the Cooper Basin. This allows KJM Contractors to service customers at mine sites across Western Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland and South Australia.

To keep up with the ever increasing workload, the company uses a fleet of Isuzu trucks consisting of one FRR 500 Long based McDonald Johnson

Compactor, two FVZ with Ahrns Tilt Trays – which are set up with gates – and three FVZ 1400 Long flat tops with side gates.

The Isuzu trucks assist with a variety of different services, including local metropolitan pick-ups and deliveries, hot shot services and trips to mine sites. The tilt trays are used to recover vehicles from various mine sites, and the FRR 500 compactor is used to pick up rubbish from camps.

KJM Contractors Operations Manager, Kim Wittwer, has been with the company since the early days and says its specialised service is complemented by its friendly staff to help stand out from the competitors.

“Our staff know their jobs, understand our clients’ needs and expectations, and deliver on time every time,” Mr Wittwer said.

Mr Wittwer said the company’s Isuzu trucks are all in use every day, travelling approximately 60,000 kilometres each year, and split their driving time equally on highways and off-road. They handle the rugged outback conditions with ease. To combat the tough conditions, KJM Contractors have enhanced their Isuzu trucks with additional protective features.

“The trucks have been fitted with heavy duty trays and additional rubber mud flaps to protect them against the stones thrown up in the off-road work. The trucks handle those conditions with very few problems,” Mr Wittwer said.

“We have found the best feature of the Isuzu trucks to be their reliability. When choosing new trucks for our fleet now, we purchase based on what we know works.

“We would add more Isuzu trucks to our fleet without a doubt.”

it’s no secret that various people, young and old, prefer a life on the road. Some of these ‘nomads’ choose permanent accommodation such as apartments, hotels, motels and

cabins as their temporary homes.

Others take a temporary home with them – caravan, camper trailer or tent – with some choosing the convenience of having their transport and home in the one package, a motorhome.

Back in 1965, Bruce and Ruth Binns foresaw what was to develop into an ongoing demand for such convenience by going to market with Australia’s first slide-on camper, the type that were typically seen on the back of utes.

That soon developed into Motorhomes and in 1978 they launched the famous Australian Winnebago motorhome range.

Before long the potential for providing more space, comfort and convenience by building a ‘home’ onto a truck chassis was recognised and so began the Binns’ relationship with Isuzu.

Today, after a fresh new direction, the company’s name has changed to Avida and has become Australia’s largest motorhome manufacturer.

The Avida motorhome product offering spans more than 70 models, with the Longreach motorhome range using the latest Isuzu NQR 450 Premium cab chassis released at the start of this year.

The company’s manufacturing facility is located on a four hectare block at Emu Plains, New South Wales.

Currently Avida employs over 190 dedicated workers who produce approximately 600 Avida motorhomes per year. The company also has twelve dealers in its dealer network throughout Australia and New Zealand.

According to Director and CEO, Ben Binns, the NQR 450 Premium is the best-suited truck model for Avida’s Longreach range of motorhomes.

“We chose this cab chassis for the Longreach range because of our long-standing relationship with Isuzu,” Ben said.

“It is a brand we can trust, and have trusted for many years.

“Isuzu helps our commitment in providing high quality, sleek style, efficient designs and the best value motorhomes customers can find in Australia.

“We manufacture for Australian conditions so it’s important that the cab chassis’ we use are also tough and reliable – two things that Isuzu excels in.

“The NQR 450 Premium is just the right size and has a power output (139 kW @ 2,600 RPM) ideal for pulling the current Longreach motorhome body.”

Like most of the motorhomes in Avida’s range, the Longreach model is carefully specified to accommodate long trips away from home in comfort and style.

Taking up to six weeks to build, the Longreach motorhomes are fitted with a bathroom, bedroom, and kitchen, and can sleep up to six people.

For complete luxury, the bathroom includes a vanity basin, cassette toilet and an Avida shower system while the bedroom has a double bed and full length wardrobe. The motorhome also has solar panels for energy efficiency.

In the past under the Winnebago name, the company also used Isuzu’s NPR 400 AMT and NQR 450 Manual cab chassis’ for the older Alpine and Wilderness motorhome ranges.

Avida subjects its new models to a myriad of stringent tests, before putting them on the market. These tests ensure quality, performance and design.

Ben said it’s important to have a long-standing relationship with suppliers to maintain the best quality for customers.

“Isuzu has been with us almost from the start and we have had a strong relationship with the company ever since,” Ben said.

“Over the decades, we have worked closely with Isuzu during the development stage of any new ranges to ensure our products meet Isuzu’s high expectations.

“We look forward to continuing our partnership with Isuzu,” he said.

The isuzu fy 8x4 series was launched in australia in late 2012 to glowing media reviews, and interest in the models from operators engaged in a variety

of heavy duty applications has been strong, especially for agitator work.

Extensively tested and engineered with heavy input from Isuzu Australia Limited’s product planning and engineering department, the FY Series was developed exclusively for Australian market requirements,

ensuring the new trucks will perform to expectations from the outset.

From East to West, we take a look at early adopters putting their newest Isuzu models to the test.

owner - driver, Andrew Kaluzyn, is leading the way with Isuzu’s new FY Series as one of the first operators in Australia to spec an FYJ 2000 for the demanding

concrete agitator application.

And Andrew knows a thing or two about concrete and the trucks that carry it, having started his concrete transport business, Andkal, back in 1999.

He has been sub-contracting to HY-TEC ever since, moving concrete from the company’s Auburn plant to various construction sites around inner and greater Sydney.

Their relationship is a long one. HY-TEC was established in 1998 only a year before Andrew’s company, and now has over 40 plants and quarries around Australia that supply a range of concrete and construction aggregates such as sand, gravel, crushed stone and slag.

Andrew grew up with trucks, and has been driving them for more than 23 years – before he was in the concrete game he drove general freight and distribution trucks for various companies.

With his experience and knowledge, he knew what to look for when buying a new truck.

“My previous truck was from an Italian manufacturer and I used it for 14 years,” Andrew said.

“I needed something new that was stronger and could handle the weight of a fully loaded 7.4 m3 concrete mixer bowl.

“I took my time in choosing the truck and it worked out well with the release of Isuzu’s new FY Series.”

According to Andrew, the process of getting his new acquisition on the road was very smooth.

“I was pleasantly surprised at how quick and easy it was to get the truck ready for work - it only took local body builders, Thaiamex, and drivetrain specialists, KCDR Drivetrain, a week to get the concrete mixer bowl fitted.

Andrew is confident that the FYJ 2000 is the right truck for the job.

“I honestly couldn’t find anything better than what Isuzu offers,” Andrew said.

“I’ve only had the truck for a short while and I’m already more than impressed with the performance.

“The price was right and the truck’s features are exactly what I require – I didn’t need to buy any extras, everything is already included.”

“The cruise control is also fantastic for those long highway drives and the engine has more than enough power.

“It drives better up hills than my previous truck, even though it’s carrying five tonnes more,” he said.

The FY Series is powered by the six cylinder SiTEC Series III 350 engine, rated at 257 kW @ 2,000 RPM and 1,422 Nm @ 1,200 – 1,500 RPM.

Andrew’s new truck has been a big topic of conversation at construction sites.

“The other sub-contractors that I work closely with are also considering upgrading to an FYJ 2000,” Andrew said.

“Isuzu’s new twin steer models have definitely caught everyone’s attention.”

located in Australia’s north-west, the Pilbara is often referred to as Australia’s engine room – home to the massive mining industry in crude oil, salt, natural

gas and iron ore.

Supporting the mining industry is Pilbara Concrete Service, a concrete and labour supplier which doesn’t shy away from the harsh and remote conditions not to mention sweltering heat.

Pilbara Concrete Service is also one of the first companies to be using Isuzu’s new FYH 2000, with two having been added to its fleet some months ago in a bid to keep up with ongoing industry demand.

While airbag suspension is often specified for Agitator work in the form of Isuzu’s FYJ model, given the inhospitable conditions, Pilbara Concrete Service opted for the added strength of taper leaf springs.

The company supplies an extensive range of ready

mixed concrete and contracts labour to various companies such as Rio Tinto and the Australian Air Services, as well as residential clients in the region.

Across its seven offices, the company employees 25 staff in the Pilbara region.

Established by the Hill Family Trust in 2010, Pilbara Concrete Service has relied on Isuzu from its inception.

Pilbara Concrete Service Manager, Marcel Stadoliukas, said that the company has been pleased with the performance of all their Isuzus.

“Our first Isuzu was an FVZ 1400 and we haven’t considered another truck brand since,” Marcel said.

“Isuzu makes great trucks – they are the perfect size and capacity for our day-to-day needs.

“We are proud to have an exclusively Isuzu fleet and currently have 11 in service.”

In addition to the two FYH 2000s, the company has various N and F Series models in their fleet ranging from a NPR 200 to an FXZ 1500.

“Isuzu’s service is second to none - the teams at Gold Coast Isuzu and Goldfields Truck Power have been great in helping us getting the new trucks work ready and on the road. We wouldn’t have been able to do it without them.”

Some of the company’s services include residential and mining infrastructure.

The two new FYH 2000s are fitted with 8.4 m3 agitator bowls built by Transcoat and are used to transport concrete to clients for their construction needs.

According to Marcel, the FYH 2000 is well suited to harsh conditions.

“We are quite happy that Isuzu released the FY series,” Marcel said

“All we needed to do was fit some rock tyres onto the FYH 2000s and they are good to go.”

“Our trucks drive in some of the most extreme environments and places where only four-wheel-drives would dare to venture.”

Marcel also praised the FYH 2000s’ power.

“We’ve had no problem with the trucks conquering steep and rocky hills with a full 12 tonne load,” Marcel said.

“The SiTEC Series III 350 engine provides 257 kW @ 2,000 RPM of power which is ideal for transporting concrete.”

“In addition, as a standard the FYH 2000 comes with Meritor rear axles and cross difflocks for extra traction – something that is important to us.”

The two new trucks are fitted with a roll over protection structure (ROPS), a falling object

protective structure (FOPS), and Hella Rallye 4000 driving lights for added visibility.

According to Marcel, the trucks’ comfort features make the harsh conditions of the Pilbara more bearable.

“The FYH 2000’s Isri 6860 seat with integrated seatbelt, coil spring cab suspension and hydraulic shock absorbers smooth out the bumpy rides on dirt roads,” Marcel said.

“The Allison 4430 automatic transmission makes handling the truck a lot easier and accessible for our drivers too.

“Furthermore, the large external flat glass mirrors with additional powered convex ‘spot’ mirrors make reversing a breeze.”

As the company expands with the mining industry, it will continue to add Isuzu trucks to its fleet.

one man’s junk is another man’s treasure – a saying that rang true for an 1800-GOT-JUNK? rubbish collector who removed two cases of ‘off’ 1991

French Bordeaux Chateau Laffite which ended up being the finest wine he ever tasted.

However, that hasn’t been the only out of the ordinary job that full-service junk removal company, 1800-GOT-JUNK? has worked on.

According to Melbourne, Brisbane and Gold Coast 1800-GOT-JUNK? Franchise Owner, Justin King, his exclusively Isuzu truck fleet has been loaded with every imaginable item, including some of what the company calls, ‘weird junk’.

“Some of the weirdest junk we’ve seen includes coffins from a morgue, a full McDonald’s Playground set and a truck load of denture moulds,” Justin said.

“Once we removed 12 truckloads from a hoarder which amounted to 120 m3 of old junk accumulated over a 20 year period.

“We also rescued a one-month old kitten named Freon from a fridge at another job.

“Our removalists never know what they will find when they arrive onsite!”

1800-GOT-JUNK? prides itself on providing a complete service. The removal team does all the lifting, loading and recycling of the items to be removed and they charge only by the space the customer’s junk takes up on the truck.

The company’s clients include offices, retail locations, residential houses and farms.

All the collected junk is either recycled, donated or disposed of responsibly. The company boasts saving almost 900,000 kilograms of rubbish from landfill since it was established over two decades ago.

The company was founded in 1989 in Vancouver, Canada, by Brian Scudmore who started out with a second-hand pick-up truck.

Since 1998, the company has grown to approximately 200 locations across three countries, having adopted franchising in 1999 as the way to achieve rapid market penetration and revenue growth.

The company arrived on Australian shores in 2006, and today there are 75 employees spread across the company’s Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Perth and Adelaide based operations.

1800-GOT-JUNK? has 17 Isuzu trucks on the road in Australia.

“All our trucks are Isuzu NPR 300s and are well suited for transporting any sort of junk that comes our way,” Justin said.

“As with all fleet-based companies, there are many considerations when deciding what manufacturer to entrust your business to.

“Price is an obvious decision maker, but you have to look at quality, reliability, resale value and dominance in the light-duty truck market –

everything that Isuzu offers and more.”

The NPR 300s are fitted with custom built container bodies that include an electric-hydraulic hoist and electric tarp system.

The bodies are built by A.H Peters and Picca bodies, located in Condell Park, New South Wales and take up to eight weeks to build.

Justin is impressed with the high quality features included in the Isuzu NPR 300 model.

“The truck’s engine (SiTEC Series III 155) has not let us down, especially with its power output (114kW @ 2,600 RPM),” Justin said.

The NPR 300s are tough little trucks, he added.

“Most of the time, they are seen driving on roads and freeways around the city areas. However, they also drive through mud, loose metal, and assorted debris to get to landfill locations several times a day.

According to Justin, the relationship with Isuzu has been very successful.

“We’ve been very happy with our choice in having an exclusively Isuzu fleet.

“As we look towards the future, we are excited about keeping Isuzu as our regular workhorse regardless of where we expand in the world.

“With Isuzu we have quality and reliability, which makes it easy for us to deliver our value promise to our customers.”

isuzu has added two new oils to its comprehensive range – 85W/140 LS Limited Slip Diff Oil and NextGen Light Commercial Oil.

The 85W/140 LS Limited Slip Diff Oil is ideal for all highly stressed standard and limited slip differentials in cars, vans, trucks, tractors, construction and industrial machinery. A benefit of the new oil is that it stays in grade and maintains its characteristics under the most severe conditions.

The stable lubricating film protects components under high load and prevents corrosion while the long life characteristics of the oil reduce maintenance costs.

The new Isuzu NextGen Light Commercial Oil is suitable for use in both diesel and petrol light commercial vehicles, vans and cars with exhaust gas after treatment systems such as catalysts or

particulate filters, where the use of C3 engine oil is specified.

This oil protects components against wear, particularly in highly stressed engines. It also improves ageing stability and reduced viscosity change. In addition, it prevents the formation of deposits in engines and turbochargers and increases the life of exhaust gas after treatment systems.

Both new oils are available in five and 20 litre containers from your local Isuzu Dealership.

These new additions ensure that Isuzu is able to provide a solution for all customer lubricant needs for any type of OEM light commercial vehicle or truck. Every four wheel drive and truck model, and their equivalent Isuzu lubricant are detailed on “What Oil do I use?” under the Lubricants and Batteries tab on the Isuzu website - parts.isuzu.com.au

The Isuzu Genuine Battery range, designed and manufactured for gruelling Australian transport conditions, has expanded following the addition of the

N100LMF model.

The N100LMF is the latest in Isuzu’s growing range and is suitable for vehicles that require right hand positive polarity fitment and a flat top design for top hold down brackets – the new battery is a direct OE battery replacement for Isuzu FX and F Series models.

Developed to provide long-lasting performance, the battery was designed to provide reduced corrosion and water loss characteristics and effectively handle vibration and constant cycling in urban traffic conditions.

Available with a 12 month warranty, the N100LMF complements the existing Isuzu Genuine Battery Range – NS70, NS70L, N70ZZ, N100MF and N150MF.

dRiveR TRaining noT JusT foR ‘newbies’w

hen you’re in the market for a new work vehicle, there are a whole range of things to take into account. There are endless

amounts of statistics about the loading capability, safety features and fuel efficiency of various makes and models, along with other features which may differentiate one brand from another. While manufacturers will make claims about the ability of their product, what they don’t consider is the ability of the operator.

The brochures may preach about the features of a particular product but there is no guarantee that a driver will know how to use them to the best advantage. A bad driver can turn the most fuel efficient truck into a guzzler, and the most reliable vehicle into a piece of workshop furniture. Basically, whatever the vehicle, whatever the job or conditions, the driver is the main factor in efficiency, reliability, and most importantly, safety.

This is where driver training can help. Driver training is not just for learner drivers or those seeking to upgrade their licence, but can have a huge effect on the habits of any driver. From a simple defensive driving course, through to advanced off-road four wheel driving, the key to getting the most out of your vehicle is knowing how to operate and care for it correctly. Many people think of driver training as having someone give you directions as they score you on your driving ability. Watching over the top of their glasses to see if you have two hands on the wheel, can reverse park and perform a three point turn. But driver training is about much more than that.

Modern driver training courses cover all aspects of a vehicle’s operation, not just driving. A good course will equip a driver with skills to check over the vehicle, load and unload it in a safe manner, secure the load for transit and drive accordingly to get the load to its destination in one piece. They may also learn about planning trips to be more economical, filling out and handling paperwork

correctly, and just as importantly, looking after their own personal health. All of these factors have an effect on the returns you get from your investment in a vehicle.

So while you may think that you and/or your drivers are pretty good at what you do, there is always room for improvement. Even long term drivers can benefit from a refresher on efficient driving techniques, as the machinery may have changed since they were taught to drive. Also, different vehicles could require different driving styles to obtain the best performance, so don’t be fooled into thinking one size fits all.

Whether you are an owner driver, run a fleet or simply putt around town in the family car, there is a training course available to help make you a better driver. The cost involved should be recovered over time by a reduction in fuel use, service and repair costs, and perhaps even your insurance premium. The most important benefit, however, is increased safety, and that’s a benefit for everyone!

IAL has invested in a new 15,000 square metre warehouse facility in Brisbane, to better serve the parts requirements of Isuzu customers in northern Australia.

As well as providing these customers with faster and more efficient parts availability, the new facility will also service the South Pacific region including the rapidly expanding Papua New Guinea market.

IAL will maintain its existing 12,000 square metre Melbourne warehouse to service the southern states.

The new facility will house the offices of Isuzu’s Queensland based regional zone managers and includes a large meeting room and other amenities.

IAL Director – IT, Engine & Parts Operations, Peter Rutkis, said new infrastructure was required to meet the needs of the company’s rapidly-expanding parts operations.

“The sales concentration of Isuzu trucks has shifted in recent years with increasing numbers being sold in Queensland; given this it made sound business sense to develop a site in Brisbane to accommodate these customers as well as offering our customers in the South Pacific a vastly improved service,” Mt Rutkis said.

The new warehouse will be up and running and servicing all Northern based markets early in the third quarter of 2013.

IAL has taken the first step to selecting its team to represent Australia at this year’s 6th annual Isuzu World Technical Competition (commonly known as the ‘I-1 Grand Prix’) in Japan.

Thirteen of the best Isuzu truck technicians from ten dealerships around Australia went head to head on 18 July in the National Technical Skills Competition to win one of two places to represent IAL at the November event.

Congratulations to Richard Badman from Gold Coast Isuzu and Andrew Keeys from Midcoast Trucks who came out on top and will be flying to Japan with Technical and Fleet Service Manager NSW, Jeff Berry (team coach).

To secure their place on the Australian team, the technicians had to complete a series of tests that covered both theory and practical components with points awarded to the highest performers.

This annual event is a great opportunity for Australian technicians to pit their skills against their Isuzu counterparts from 20 other countries.

With the number of competing countries increasing to 29 this year, the competition has been split into two categories, with Australia competing against 10 other countries in the “EURO 5 Emission Regulation” category.

The Australian team won the competition in 2011 and hopes are high that our country will return to the podium again this year. Good luck to Richard, Andrew and Jeff!

with the IAL team having installed the refreshed engine back onto the chassis, all eyes were on Renix Auto Trimmers who had been hard

at work completing the cabin’s interior trimming. You can see the result in the photos above. The SBR looks as modest and functional as the day it rolled off the production line at General Motors in Dandenong, Victoria.

The cabin has since been remarried to the chassis in a carefully choreographed operation that involved precision forklift driving and two eagle-eyed spotters guiding the cabin gently into position.

With the cabin and chassis now safely back at home in the IAL Product Development Centre, the team has begun the delicate task of refitting the freshly re-skinned dash, heater controls (thanks to FleetMark), radio and instrument cluster, complete with new speedometer.

With the freshly painted doors’ new exterior handles, window winders and reproduced interior trim panel, the SBR is approaching its former glory and there is genuine excitement in the engineering department about the pending completion of this special project.

Thanks to a donation from automotive lighting and electrical products specialist, Narva, the SBR now also features bright new headlamps. Another generous partner offering their products to the SBR project is premium tyre company, Michelin, which has donated a set of tyres.

Next on the radar for the build is to install all glass and remaining cabin parts. See more of the SBR revival in the next edition of Truck Power.

TRuck of The yeaRentries are now being taken for the 2013-14 Truck of the year competition.

AIR LIquIDE – FRR 500Air Liquide Western Australia purchased its Isuzu FRR 500 from Major Motors in Perth to replace its older Isuzu truck. The FRR 500 is based at Air Liquide’s Darwin branch and is used to deliver packaged gases to its Darwin customers.

“The FRR 500 was equipped with everything we required in a truck and featured some great safety inclusions. The truck had a custom built tray and powered hoist fitted to complete its introduction to service,” Supply Chain Manager, Jeffrey Bonser said.

“Air Liquide has no doubt that the reliability built within the brand will shine through for many years.

“I am extremely happy with our purchase and the visual presence is certainly eye catching.”

MuRRAY RACING – FSD 700New South Wales race horse trainer, Bede Murray, uses his Isuzu FSD 700 to transport race horses to race meets. He recently upgraded from a smaller Isuzu model.

“This is my second Isuzu horse float. When it was time to upgrade to a larger vehicle to carry more horses, we knew that the Isuzu FSD 700 was the truck for us as we never had any problems with our first Isuzu,” Bede said.

“We still have and use the other Isuzu truck for smaller loads of horses.”

The FSD 700 horse float was custom designed by Murray Racing, painted blue and gold representing their racing colours.

“We had the interior fitted with individual stalls to cater for up to eight horses,” Bede said.

“The FSD 700 has a passenger area behind the cab for our strappers travelling with the horses and plenty of storage for horse gear required to travel with us.

“Air bags in the rear enable us to lower the body to assist with loading our horses, which makes the FSD 700 a perfect unit for the job.

“We travel all over New South Wales and interstate and have had many complimentary remarks and praise for the unit generally.”

GXL TRANSPoRT – FRR 500 AND FRR 600Owner of GLX Transport, Gabriel Xiberras, has been using Isuzus for 18 years. Subcontracting short haul deliveries to Mulford Plastics, GLX Transport delivers plastic sheet, film and roll products to customers in metropolitan Sydney and surrounds.

Starting out in 1995 as a sole trader, Gabriel’s first truck was a preloved 1989 NPR 400 flat top, purchased from his brother with 380,000 km on the clock.

According to Gabriel, the NPR never caused a problem and ran like clockwork. However as the business grew, in 2001, GLX Transport upgraded to a brand new FRR 500 with a custom-built curtain sider body. The NPR 400 was sold to Gabriel’s father for use on the family farm at 740,000 km.

The FRR 500 was chosen for the weight it could carry and as it could accommodate the size of body that was required. Gabriel was the only person to drive the new truck and serviced it every 5,000 km.

In 2011, a second truck was required – an Isuzu FRR 600 with another curtain sider body. Gabriel said he is extremely happy with the overall package.

“Reliability is everything in this industry and without Isuzu I would not be able to sleep so soundly. They are tough enough to handle any workload without missing a beat, day in day out, and just as importantly, any driver we put in them,” Gabriel said.

“When I have a new driver start, most have also been surprised at the level of comfort and ease of driving when they first sit in the Isuzus. Many have said they drive like a car.

“The FRR 500 is still going strong and has clocked up 582,000 km. The FRR 600 has done 97,000 km and is also serviced every 5,000 km.

“The old NPR 400 left the family in 2008 with 800,000 km on the clock, still going as strong as ever.”

HoBART TRuCk SPARES – FVD 1000Towing and smash repair specialists, Hobart Truck Spares, come to stranded motorists’ rescue with a recently acquired Isuzu FVD 1000.

The new addition is fitted with a tilt slide tray for easy transport and towing of broken down vehicles. It joins another Isuzu FVR 900 in the Tasmanian company’s fleet.

Hobart Truck Spares Director, Darren Clark, said the new truck has a lot to offer.

“The truck’s specs are well suited for our requirements. The power output (221 kW @ 2,400 RPM) is great for towing multiple vehicles.”

“We also love the comfort that Isuzu provides – the Isri 6860 driver seat is ideal for long stints on the road.”

MARINE DoCToR – FRR 500 AMTMarine Doctor uses an Isuzu FRR 500 AMT to provide mobile marine mechanic services to its customers in Perth, Western Australia.

Delivered in October 2012, the customised mobile marine workshop is completely self-contained.

“It’s my office, mini kitchen and workshop in one,” Director, Sonny Tilbury said.

Many features have been added to the truck, such as a toilet, water tank, air conditioning and Boscotek storage.

“The truck is fitted with a compressor, five kva Onan generator, parts washer cleaning booth, gearbox service rack and air reels in the chassis,” Sonny said.

“We have also added concertina steps in the chassis for rear access and inbuilt electric stairs on the side entry. On the outside we have included LED work lamps.

“The FRR 500 AMT was the perfect choice for my line of work. In its daily set up, the truck weighs eight tonnes on the road. This is not a problem for it at all – even when towing clients boats up to 3.5 tonnes, the truck does the job with ease.

“The custom quad camera with indicator sensing makes city driving and reversing up clients’ tight driveways easy.”

INNoVATIoNAL DEVELoPMENTS PTY LTD – NPR 200 TRADEPACkLocated in Werribee, Victoria, Innovational Developments Pty Ltd provides building services with the help of an Isuzu NPR 200 Tradepack.

The truck is fitted with extra tool boxes and shelving to transport building equipment.

Managing Director, Charle Vella wished he purchased the NPR 300 Tradepack sooner.

“This truck is ideal for my needs and the perfect fit to carry all my building materials,” Charlie said.

“It’s also a great looking truck. Even without any signage, the truck still turns heads.”

TYRERIGHT PoRT HEDLAND – FRR 500 LoNGTo accommodate large volumes of truck tyres, independently owned family business, Tyreright Port Hedland, custom built an Isuzu FRR 500 Long.

Fully serviceable for on-site truck tyre work, the FRR 500 has been equipped with an Eagle SMF truck tyre changer and truck wheel balancer.

Designed for the regional store for its large carrying capacity, the truck has a 24 volt generator and screw compressor, which is run off its separate diesel engine.

DoWNER MouCHEL – FSR 850Located in Perth WA, Downer Mouchel maintains the WA road network with a recently acquired Isuzu FSR 850.

The company is currently upgrading its fleet to the Isuzu range. The purpose built trucks will make sure the Perth roads are free from pot holes, all street signs are upright, all traffic lights are working properly and the road network litter free.

Plant Manager, David Cooke looks forward to adding more Isuzus to his fleet.

“Isuzu’s reliability is a winner,” David said.

“The new trucks will help us provide better service for our customers and help grow our business.”

MAMMIMo GouRMET ICE-CREAM – NLR 200 SHoRT AMTMammimo Gourmet Ice-cream is a boutique ice-cream manufacturer located in Childers, Queensland. Previously using a Toyota Landcruiser to cater at events and complete deliveries, the business required a vehicle with more capacity and purchased an Isuzu NLR 200 Short AMT.

“We chose this vehicle for the reliability, comfort, its awesome looks and of course its capacity. We purchased a eutectic body for the back which primarily holds twice the capacity of the previous vehicles we have owned,” Anthony Mammimo said.

“We also wanted it to be easy to operate and drive.

“This is our first Isuzu truck and we are extremely happy with its all-round ability and performance, and look forward to expanding our fleet with another Isuzu in the future.”

The Mammimo Gourmet Ice-cream Isuzu truck was recently on show at the Brisbane Truck Show as part of the Isuzu and Truckcorp displays.
