Jamestown

May 14, 1607 the Virginia Company founded Jamestown

Site was bad, too close to the sea, on low swampy land. Mosquitoes everywhere

Because of location and the people, began getting sick and died

Because no one new how to farm starvation was a constant problem

Only way they survived was because of American Indian tribes giving them food.

Tobacco became the largest crop produced by the colony

First successful colony in the New World

The American Colonies

The New England Colony

Included: New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut

Not suitable for farmingEarly colonists chose to stay by the

The Middle Colony

Included: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware

More suitable land for farming, produced a lot of grains, ex. (Corn and wheat)

Southern Colonies

included Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia

Predominately a rural colonyThe geography gave rise to the plantation

rice, tobacco, and indigoPlantation owners developed and

aristocratic lifestyleMain force of labor was slave labor, but
