    Almost all dental disease is preventable. Acombination of good brushing, a healthy dietand regular visits to the dentist will helpchildren to grow strong and healthy teeth.

    Many people think that baby teeth are lessimportant than adult teeth, but looking afterchildrens first teeth is vital. Cavities and decayin baby teeth can also spread to permanentteeth, causing painful and costly damage. Infact, good oral health begins even before these

    first teeth appear.

    TOOTH DEVELOPMENTChildren's tooth development begins while thebaby is in the womb. Teething usually occursbetween the ages of six and nine months.Children usually have their full set of 20 primaryteeth (milk teeth, baby teeth or deciduousteeth) by the age of three years. At about theage of six years, the first permanent teeth erupt(push through the gum).

    The Defenders of the ToothMunch girl,Brush boy and Water boy are Dental HealthServices Victorias superheros who work hardto brighten the smiles of Victorian children. Thedefenders have been designed to engagechildren to learn about good oral health. Theyare centred on the three key messages Eat

    MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTHSERVICES: ANTICIPATORY GUIDANCE

    FOR PARENTS

    The Maternal and Child Health service providesall families with free health with 10 Key Agesand Stages consultations to support parenting,health and development. These regularappointments include an initial home visit andconsultations at 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 8 weeks, 4months, 8 months, 12 months, 18 months, 2years and 3-5 years. At each consultation,parents are given the chance to discuss their

    concerns and parenting experiences; and learnhow to improve childs health, growth anddevelopment. This includes information onbreastfeeding, nutrition, feeding issues and oralhealth.

    Maternal and Child Health line (13 22 29) -Qualified Maternal and Child Health nursesprovide information, support and advice toVictorian families with children from birth toschool age 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. To
