El campeonato mundial de surfing llega nuevamente a las costas de la región oeste de Puerto Rico, luego de 42 años. Todos los caminos conducen hacia Aguadilla, anfitrión del Rip Curl Pro Search. A raíz de este evento internacional nace Porta del Surf, una actividad dedicada al surf-ing y su cultura. El martes 2 de noviembre, ésta se inaugura con el Simposio sobre el surfing en Puerto Rico a celebrarse en la Sala de Conferencias del Museo de His-toria de Aguadilla (MuHA) a partir de las 12:00 md. Aquí “correr olas” será el centro del conocimiento. La oceanografía, la ge-ología, la investigación social, los testimo-

nios históricos, entre otros, le echarán una mirada a la cultura del surf. Como si fuera poco, el simposio funge como preámbulo para una serie de talleres y una exposición artística en las salas del MuHA, que estará exhibiéndose durante 6 meses. The world surfing contest will arrive once again to the west coast of Puerto Rico, after 42 years. All roads lead to Aguadilla, host of the Rip Curl Pro Search. In honor of this international event we created Porta del Surf, an event dedicated to surfing and surf culture. Tuesday, No-vember 2nd, will be the inauguration of said event with a Symposium on Surfing in Puerto Rico, which will take place in the conference hall at the Museum of History of Aguadilla (MuHA) starting at 12 noon. Here “riding waves” will be the central theme. Oceanography, geology, social investigations, historical accounts, among others, will take us for a ride into the culture of surf. As if this wasn’t enough, the symposium serves as an introduction to a series of workshops and art exhibits in the halls of the MuHA, which will be on display for six months. This historical ride will be full of waves, sun, surfboards and ocean people brought to life by professional photographers and surf memorabilia that will surely leave you…STOKED!

With their help Rescate Playas Isabela has: Installed educational signs and more trash barrels on the beach side at these locations as well as PVC tube

Placed in different areas of the beach along walls at the publics access to the beach, these tubes contain empty bags for everyone’s use-the idea is that visitors will use them to pick up their trash then deposit in the trash barrels.The business that can maintain the area around them cleanest will be named winner of the challenge. For the third trimester of 2010 there was a tie between Sonia Ri-can and Cheers. Congratulations to Soina (Sonia Rican’s) and Vladimir (Cheers) for their outstanding efforts. Thank you! LA BODEGUITA Ron del Barrilito

So... Enough talk about wine and beer. How about we get to the good stuff? Yup, I’m talking about rum. Puerto Rico is one of the main rum producers in the world, yet one brand has been standing out more than others and that is Ron del Barrilito 3 Star. First and foremost, what is rum? Rum is the distilled alcoholic beverage made from sugarcane juice or its molasses. The result is a clear product that is then aged in oak and other types of barrels. Light rums are usually used in cocktails, darker ones are usually drunk neat or over ice. This particular rum was first produced in a plantation in Bayamon, where Fernando Fernandez, the owner, used honey and sugar in the distillation process. It was originally made for his family, but quickly caught on and neighbors started asking to buy Fernandez’ “Ron del Barrilito”. This rum is distilled from fermented molasses and aged in used whiskey barrels for 6 to 10 years, because of this; the rum develops a lovely amber color. The distinguishing characteristics of the 3 Star Barrilito include musky caramels as well as smoke. As soon as you take the first sip, you will notice its rich oak flavor as well as tones of dried fruit, nuts and vanilla, which is all perfectly balanced with just the right amount of spice.

Cambiemos de tema, dejemos el vino y la cerveza por éste numero. ¿Vamos a hablar de lo bueno? Sí, me refiero al ron. Puerto Rico es uno de los productores de ron más grandes del mundo, pero hay una marca que se destaca, el Ron del Barrilito 3 Estrellas.

Antes que nada ¿qué es el ron? Ron es una bebida alcohólica des-tilado que proviene del jugo de la caña de azúcar o de su melaza. El resultado es un producto transparente que entonces se enviéjese en roble u otros tipos de barriles. Los rones claritos usualmente son usados en tragos, los más oscuros son tomados sólo o con hielo.

Éste ron en particular, en un principio fue producido en una plant-ación de Bayamón, donde Fernando Fernández, el dueño, usaba miel y azúcar durante el proceso de destilación. Originalmente lo elaboraba para su familia, pero rápidamente se hizo popular y los vecinos querían comprar el “Ron del Barrilito” de Fernández.

Ron del Barrilito es destilando de melaza fermentada y envejecido en barriles que antes contenía whiskey por 6 a 10 años. Es por esto que el ron desarrolla ese hermoso color de ámbar. Las características del Barrilito 3 Estrellas incluyen caramelo almiz-cle al igual que un sabor ahumado. Al tomar tu primer sorbo no-tarás su abundante sabor de roble acompañado por tonos de fruta seca, nueces y vainilla, los cuales están perfectamente equilibrados con la cantidad exacta de especies.

A little over two years ago, after an “after party” at a well known, legendary dive bar in Moca, a band was born, daughter of alcohol and good times; Los Petardos!. Front man Osvaldo “Macoyo” Rodriguez (bass/vocals), veteran of Puerto Rico’s music scene, Manuel Izquierdo (drums), and Mikey Figueroa (guitar) come together to create a “vintage” sound evoking 60s Rock n Roll, their love of the beach, surf, and country.

What sets Los Petardos! apart from the rest is the fact that they are one of the few bands directly influenced by feeling “jibaro” (from the country) and the way of life on the west side of Puerto Rico, giving a face to the pressures and the day to day situa-tions thereby revealing the impressions of a modern “jibaro” between each note and cord. Nevertheless, their most recent production “Rockanrol con Gandules” does not feel like a fatalistic piece of criticism without solution. On the contrary, when paying close attention to their music, especially to the lyrical content, we find words that move us; “Echar pa’ alante” (Keep movin’ forward) and “Andar sin miedo” (Have no fear). Their catchy and danceable rhythms allow for great times with your partner, friends, and at parties.

“Los Petardos! is a band you’ll enjoy live,” comments Macoyo. And that is no exag-geration. During the past two years they have had performances in and out of Puerto Rico, solidifying them as one of the most energetic and eclectic live shows on the island.

Hace poco mas de un año atrás, después de un “after party” en uno de los chin-chorros más reconocidos y legendarios de Moca nace una banda hija del alcohol y los buenos tiempos, Los Petardos! Capitaneados por Osvaldo “Macoyo” Rodriguez (bajo/voz), veterano de la escena musical de Puerto Rico, Manuel Izquierdo (batería) y Mikey Figueroa (guitarra) se unen para traer un sonido “vintage” que evoca el rocka-nrol de los 60’s, la pasión por la playa, el surf y el campo.

Lo que hace relevante y distingue a Los Petardos! es el hecho que son de las pocas bandas que están directamente influenciadas por el sentir jíbaro y la vida en el área oeste de Puerto Rico dándole cara a las presiones y situaciones del diario vivir en la isla. Revelando así entre notas y acordes la impresión de lo que es el jíbaro moderno. Sin embargo “Rockanrol con Gandules” su producción mas reciente no se siente como una obra fatalista de critica sin solución, al contrario, al mirar con detenimiento su música en especial en el contenido lírico, encontramos letras que nos aferran a la motivación a “Echar pa’ alante” y “Andar sin miedo”. Los ritmos pegajosos y al-tamente bailables nos invitan a pasar un buen tiempo en pareja, en grupo, en fiesta.

‘Los Petardos! es una banda para disfrutarse en vivo” nos cuenta Macoyo. Y no es para menos. Durante este tiempo han tenido presentaciones dentro y fuera de la isla solidificándose como uno de los shows en vivo más energéticos y eclécticos en la isla.

No es una marquesina cualquiera, es un santuario especialmente diseñado para crear sushi. Es sin duda, el lugar más limpio que puedas visitar. En éste as-pecto parece una sala de oper-ación de los mejores hospitales, un ambiente perfecto para las creaciones de los chefs.El menú de Pedro’s Pescado es auténticamente creado, son piezas de arte original usando todos los ingredientes usuales de sushi: atún, salmón, “yellow-tail”, anguila, cangrejo y ensal-ada de algas del mar. Desde su arroz per-fectamente elaborado hasta la cocina impecable, ellos le po-nen un 110% en todo lo que hacen y es palpable. La comi-da y el personal son totalmente adictivos. Es realmente rico. I have eaten sushi in many parts of the world, I have sat in front of glasssushi bars and watched classically trained Japanese chefs do their magic, I have eaten sushi sitting on the floor with costumed danc-ers and people banging on gongs, I have even eaten su-shi on a fishing boat with tuna still warm from the sea, but my absolutefavorite spot to have sushi is in a transformed ga-rage in Jobos, Isabela. This is not just any garage, it is a spe-cially designed sushi-making sanctuary. I can say without a doubt it is the cleanest place you will ever see. It resembles an operating room in a top rate hospital; a perfect environment where chefs can create.The menu at Pedro’s Pescado is an authentically crafted, original piece of art using all of the usual sushi fare includ-ing: tuna, salmon, yellowtail, eel, crab, and seaweed salad. There is also the dish called poki, which is tuna and avo-cado mixed with a roasted gar-lic aioli, sesame seeds, pick-led ginger, and brown rice. In addition you will find specials –these are hidden gems- like a soft shell crab roll (when in season), and don`t think for a second that they will hesitate in using an amarillo in a sushi roll. Anything is good with a

sweet fried plantain, but there is something about the rice and the nori that makes it an un-beatable combination. Also try the Wahoo sashimi prepared only miles from where it was caught. This is fish as fresh as it gets. There is also a vegetar-ian section and any roll can be made with brown rice so there is something for everyone.On their website they have a saying “We don’t mess around!” and this is no joke. From the rice being perfectly seasoned to the kitchen being spotless these guys put 110% into everything they do and it shows. The food and the peo-ple are totally addictive; it’s that good. So, if you want to set out on your journey for great sushi, you don’t need a plane, train, or bus, just go to the blinking light, turn left, go down the hilland look for the sign that says Pedro’s Pescado. It’s that easy and it’s that delicious.

The MHL factory is a new creation by Michael Leason. It’s the first surf factory in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean to in-corporate automated machining in the process of building custom made surf-boards, stand up paddle boards (SUPs), kite boards, etc. The facility was recently forged just this last spring in Aguadilla right around the time when we received our 34 foot long AKU Shaper from Austra-lia. The AKU shaper is our CNC machine that cuts any type of board up to 16 feet in length with the use of computer-aided design software and is one of the largest ever built in the world. The facility is ap-proximately 4,000 sq. ft. in size and has all of the essential space, tools, materi-als, and rooms necessary to facilitate any type of shaping.

Tell us a little about the communities in-volvement, where it’s at today and what you visualize it to be in the future.

The community involved with MHL is the most important part of the operation and I’m happy to say that the support is grow-ing at a steady pace. On a regular day you will run into Michael Leason, Greg Jaudon, Ricky Medina, Charlie Rovira, and me, Nick Leason. Apart from being the creator of the project, my father, Mi-chael Leason, brings a lot of vision and direction to the operation as he has done with his projects in the past. Greg, Ricky, and Charlie need no introduction as they have been shaping boards for years and add a lot of knowledge and experience to every step of the process. Then there’s me, which I guess being the youngster of the group, I am the most comfortable with the computing aspects of the machine and I try to help out with our organization and company image.Outside of the usual suspects we have had a helping hand from other shapers

and laminators like Gualli Ramirez of Peli-cano Surfboards. When things get busy, it’s nice to know that you have talented people down the street who may be able to help you out. Then there is the local surf community that always gives great feed-back on the boards and helps us prog-ress with our designs and construction techniques. One example is our paddle board team rider Adrian Garcia who has been great with us and has helped us a lot in the progression of our racing SUPs. Looking into the near future, I can really see our local area as centers of produc-tivity not just for Puerto Rico, but for the islands and mainlands that are so close by. We have a talented town of shapers, laminators, and craftsmen and I would love to see everybody putting their heads together and working under a common roof to produce boards for export. What type of boards have come out of MHL, which are the most popular?

When it comes to board styles and con-struction at MHL, we offer a wide variety. Building a short board with good old poly-ester resin is no longer the norm. From the start, we tackled the process of working with epoxy resins and that has opened a lot of doors for us. We shape a lot of high density EPS (expanded poly styrene) and with the epoxy we are no longer limited to just fiberglass. We do a lot of work with carbon fiber and natural wood veneers such as bamboo to change the flex pat-terns and strength of our boards. We even go as far as molding full sandwich con-struction boards with high density cores, using vacuum bagging as our tooling method for the molding process. As for the popular boards…When it comes to surf boards everybody has loved the eps/epoxy boards and I think that it will be the standard for short boards in the fu-ture. As for paddleboards, our boards with the bamboo veneers have turned some

heads and we are also seeing a strong interest in the large racing/cruising SUPs 12’6” and over made with full carbon laminations. The racing boards are one of my personal favorites and I think anybody can enjoy them. They have changed my attitude towards flat-water days.

To make sure you’re creating the best board you can for a cleint what informa-tion should they be relaying to you?

When it comes to making someone’s fa-vorite board, I believe that it comes down to matching a design to their style. Usu-ally the customer has a good idea of what they are looking for and the boys at MHL have been making boards long enough to point them in the right direction. Then there are the different materials that we have been working with and we encour-age people to give it a try. Also, an advan-tage to using our CAD software for board design is that we have reference files on all of the boards that we have built. We have a record on the details of your last board and can optimize the dimensions of an existing model. That’s why many shapers these days have models to their boards that they customize for the indi-vidual rider. Most of the parabolic curves stay the same because they have been optimizing them with the constant feed-back that they get from the riders.

What’s your target market?

There is a strong local market, but I also hope that very soon, we will be shipping our boards out to other islands and also to the East coast. I’ve already sent some racing kiteboards to Europe, the states and New Zealand, which was interesting. At least in the SUP world, there are not many businesses that offer custom built boards and we hope to offer that service to locals and anybody else that is inter-ested and within reach.

La fábrica MHL es una creación nueva de Michael Leason. Es la primera fábrica de surf en Puerto Rico y el Caribe a incorpo-rar maquinas automatizadas en el proceso de construcción a pedido de tablas de surf, stand up paddle (SUP), kite boards, etc. Las instalaciones se establecieron en Aguadilla la primavera pasada al recibir la AKU Shaper de 34 pies desde Australia. La AKU shaper es nuestra maquina CNC, la cual corta todo tipo de tablas, midiendo hasta 16 pies de largo, con la ayuda de software computarizado. Es una de las más grandes del mundo. Las instalacio-nes constan de aproximadamente 4,000 pies cuadrados y cuentan con todo el es-pacio, equipo y materiales necesario para facilitar todo tipo de “shaping.”

Cuéntanos un poco sobre la participación de la comunidad. La participación de la comunidad juega una parte importante en las opera-ciones de MHL y estoy muy contento que el apoyo sigue creciendo constantemente. En un día normal podrás encontrarte con Michael Leason, Greg Joudon, Ricky Medina y Charlie Rovira junto a mí, Nick Leason. Por ejemplo, Adrian Garcia, nuestro SUP “team rider” nos ha ayudado muchísimo progresar con nuestros SUP de carrera. Mirando hacia el futuro realmente veo a nuestra área local como un centro de producción, no solamente para Puerto Rico sino para las islas y los continentes a nuestro alrededor. Tenemos un pueblo de “shapers”, laminadores y artesanos talentosos, me encantaría que todos jun-táramos las cabezas y trabajáramos bajo un sólo techo para producir tablas para exportar.

¿Qué estilos de tablas salen de MHL? ¿Cuáles son las populares? En MHL ofrecemos una gran var-iedad de estilo y construcción de tablas. Las tablas de resina de poliéster ya no son la norma. Desde el comienzo nos dedi-camos a trabajar con el proceso de resina epoxy y eso nos abrió muchísimas puer-tas. Estamos elaborando muchas “high density eps (expanded polystyrene)” y con el epoxy no estamos limitado a sólo fibra de vidrio. Trabajamos mucho con fibra de carbón y chapas de madera natural como el bambú para cambiar la flexibilidad y fuerza de nuestras tablas. Inclusive, hac-emos moldes alrededor de la tabla con un centro de “high density eps” usando en-casillado al vacio como herramienta para el proceso de moldeo. Las tablas popula-res… en cuanto a las tablas de surfear, a todos les encantan el eps/epoxy, creo que va ser el estándar para tablas cortas en un futuro. Entre los SUP’s, las que tienen la chapa de bambú han llamado bastante la atención y estamos viendo mucho in-

terés en las de carrera/cruceros grandes de 12’6’’ o más con una laminación entera de fibra de carbón. Personalmente las de carrera son mis favoritas y las puede disfrutar todo el mundo. Han cambiado como me siento los días sin olas.

¿Qué información es necesaria para ase-gurar que le estas creando la mejor tabla a tu cliente ? Cuando se trata de fabricar la tab-la perfecta para alguien, la idea es aparear el diseño de la tabla al estilo del individuo. Usualmente el cliente conoce o tiene una visión de lo qué busca y el grupo de MHL ha estado trabajando suficiente tiempo en esto para darle buena orientacion. Luego tenemos muchos materiales nuevos que les invitamos a probar. También, una ven-taja de usar nuestro software CAD para el diseño de la tabla es que tenemos los archivos de referencia de toda tabla que hemos fabricado. Tenemos todos los det-alles de su última tabla y podemos optimi-zar y continuamente refinar las dimensio-nes del modelo existente. Es por esto que muchos “shapers” guardan los modelos de las tablas de cada corredor individu-almente. Las curvas parabólicas quedan igual porque han sido optimizadas usando el feedback constante de los corredores.

¿A qué mercado específico se diri-gen? Hay un mercado local fuerte, pero esperamos que muy pronto también es-taremos enviando tablas a las otras islas y a la costa Este de los Estados Unidos. Ya hemos enviado kiteboards de carrera a Europa, los Estados Unidos y Nueva Ze-landa. No hay muchas fábricas que ofrez-can tablas hecha por pedido, al menos en el mundo del SUP. Nosotros le ofrecemos esto a los locales y a todos aquellos inte-resados, quienes estén a nuestro alcance.

José “Nono” Sierra, representan-te de Rip Curl en Puerto Rico, el Caribe y Costa Rica, nos informa sobre el evento Rip Curl Pro Search Trial (el ganador de éste representará a Puerto Rico en el Rip Curl Pro Search), las fiestas más anticipa-das y el esfuerzo de limpieza al cual todos debemos brindar una mano! Los 16 escogidos para el even-to Rip Curl Pro Search Trial presentado por Jeep son los mejores surfistas locales del momento. Éstos son elegidos según su ranking Internacional y Nacional. Todo aquel surfista de nacionalidad Puertorri-queña que esté en el circuito de la ASP (Association of Surfing Professionals) bajo el nivel de WQS (World Qualifying Series) sería automáticamente escogido para los “Trials”. De esta serie se escogieron 5 candidatos en total y del ranking nacional, el cual se utilizó la APSPR (Asociación Profesional de Surfing de Puerto Rico) sa-lieron 10 de ellos y uno es escogido como “Wildcard” que le otorga Rip Curl a un

surfista local auspiciado por ellos. Estos 16surfistas batallarán entre sí el 29 de Octubre en un evento de surf (playa a de-terminarse, que puede ser desde Middles hasta Wilderness) en el cual sólo UNO saldrá victorioso. El ganador recibirá de parte de Rip Curl una entrada “Wildcard” al evento Rip Curl Pro Search “Somewhe-re in Puerto Rico” presentado por la Com-pañía de Turismo de Puerto Rico a cele-brarse en las playas de Isabela y Aguadilla entre los días del 30 de Octubre y el 10 de Noviembre del año en curso.Hasta el momento, están confirmados a participar en el Rip Curl Pro Search “So-mewhere in Puerto Rico” presentado por la Compañía de Turismo de Puerto Rico, los 32 mejores surfistas masculinos del mundo y las 18 mujeres mejores surfistas del mundo. He also tells us about the hottest parties to attend and most impor-tant, about the clean up efforts we all need to chip in on. The 16 picks for the Rip Curl Pro Search Trial presented by Jeep are the current best local surfers. These were chosen by their International and National rankings. All surfers that are Puerto Rican nationals in the ASP circuit at the WQS level are automatically chosen for the Trials. There were five total from this category and ten came from the national ranking, in which we used the APSPR (Association of Pro-fessional Surfing in Puerto Rico), and one Wildcard that goes to a local Rip Curl sur-fer. These 16 surfers will battle it out on October 29th in an event (surf spot to be determined, anywhere between Middles and Wilderness) where ONE victor will be awarded a Wildcard by Rip Curl into the Rip Curl Pro Search “Somewhere in Puer-to Rico” presented by the Tourism Board of Puerto Rico from October 30 to Nov-ember 10, 2010 at the beaches of Isabela and Aguadilla. With regards to the Rip Curl Pro Search “Somewhere in Puerto Rico” presented by the Tourism Board of Puerto Rico, the-re are 32 of the best male surfers in the world and 18 of the best female surfer in the world that have confirmed their pre-sence. Among these are Mick Fanning (current World Champ 2009-2010 and two times Champ), Kelly Slater (9 times World Champ), Jordy Smith, Taj Burrow, Owen Wright (Rip Curl), Andy Irons; and females include Stephanie Gilmore (3 times con-secutive World Champ and Rip Curl rider), Sally Fitzgibbons, Silvana Lima and Sofia Mulanovich.

This sheds some light on the magnitude of this event. Remember there is a major recycling plan and we (Rip Curl) want to leave the beaches cleaner than when we got there. In order to this everyone must chip in and cooperate with “Haciendo Am-biente of Coors Light”, the Waste Dept., Surfrider Foundation, and Isabelas’ and Aguadillas’ Municipalites. We will be edu-cating and orientating on proper disposal of waste during the course of the event. Also, we are contributing to a permanent recycling plan with these towns, marking the legacy of Rip Curl Planet at these bea-ches that give us so much.

Josie Graves1. El evento WCT es lo más grande que tiene el surfing, y todavía no lo creo que el WCT viene para PR! Es una oportunidad única para los surfistas de PR y para mucha gente! Rápido me pregunté si iba a poder participar en los “Trials” ya que seria un sueño mio surfear y competir con los mejores del mundo. Estoy muy contento que Rip Curl escogió a PR como su destino del evento Search, y que estoy entre los 16 partici-pantes!2. Estoy surfeando mucho y trabajando con mi equipo (tablas) para el evento. Voy a dar lo máximo de mí y tratar de ganar los “Trials” ya que sólo uno de los 16 entra. Pero lo más que quiero es tener olas buenas durante esas dos semanas para poder ver lo que pasa aquí con ese calibre de surfistas y subir mí nivel.3. Para escoger un favorito es difícil ya que las olas de PR son impre-decibles, consistentes pero siempre están diferentes quiero ver a Dane Reynolds volverse loco con su power surfing y aerials! También a Jordy Smith, Taj Burrow en verdad todos los 32 ya que son los mejores del

Wesley “Weelz” Toth1. Por fin! Es un sueño hecho a realidad. Yo siempre he querido ver a los mejores surfers del mundo serfear en nuestras playas.2. El WCT tiene a los 32 mejores surfers en el mundo compitiendo para un sólo titulo mundial. Esa gente se van a matar en la competencia aquí en Puerto Rico durante el Rip Curl Pro Search. Me siento mal para las pobres olitas que van a ser partidas por estos surfers!3. Fácil, el ganador del evento va ser el “Wildcard” puertorro con más leche que un árbol de pana!

Willito Carrasco 1. Es una súper oportunidad, para el talento puertorriqueño, de aprender con los mejores surfers del mundo y a la vez demostrar que aquí hay cali-bre alto también. 2. Estos eventos hay que frecuentarlos ya que nuestros futuros surfers “groms” necesitan de estas demostraciones profesionales para su madurez en el surfing. Además para nuestro turismo que le hace falta más crecimiento y no se ha dado un evento de esta magnitud hace mucho tiempo. 3. Kelly Slater

Tommy Bursian1. El WCT viniendo a Puerto Rico es lo mejor que le a pasado a el deporte del surfing en Puerto Rico. Este evento va ayudar mucho a los surfers y a la industria del surfing en la isla. Mucha gente de la industria del surfing vienen a Puerto Rico para este evento y van a ver que Puerto Rico tiene el potencial, con olas y con los surfers para hacer eventos grandes. El evento del WCT va a traer mucho turismo en los próximos años, ya que todo el mundo va a ver las olas y el paraíso que es Puerto Rico. Rent House @ Shacks2.Mis expectativas es ganar los “Trails” y pasar los heats en el “main event”. El que gane los “Trails” le va a tocar al “highest seed” de los sur-fers del WCT. Ahora mismo el que esta primero es Kelly Slater y queda un competencia antes del Rip Curl Pro Search, lo más seguro seria Kelly, el surfer que el ganador del los “Trails” va tener que enfrentar. 3. Kelly Slater o Jordy Smith.

Juan Ashton1. El WCT es un evento que para mí será el evento de mayor prestigioso que hemos tenido en Puerto Rico. Es por el nivel de surfing que vamos a tener y muy bien puede ser que se decida el titulo mundial aquí en Puer-to Rico con Kelly Slater posiblemente ganando su décimo campeonato mundial.2. Las expectativas son altas. Van a ver mucha actividades y la gente la va a pasar súper. 3. Definitivamente a Kelly Slater, es mí surfer favorito y esperemos que gane su 10 titulo mundial aquí en Puerto Rico. También hay dos surfers más que me encantan como surfean, Dusty Pane y Coco Ho del team Volcom, que estarán surfeando en el Main Event del Rip Curl Search.

There are many vendors along the highways in Puerto Rico specializing in a great variety of foods, fruit, produce, and beverages. These come in all sizes from a small cart to mobile kitch-ens or “cantina rodantes,” which offer typical Puerto Rican cuisine and “frituras” or fritters. There are many restaurants, bakeries, and bars which had their humble origins as a roadside stand and turned good food into success. At these and similar locations, roasted pig is still available mostly on weekends. This goes back to the days when the roasted pig or “lechon asado” reigned supreme as the top road food. The more popular mobile eateries have a constant client turnover and do a brisk business especially around lunch time as they provide a tarp covered dining area complete with tables and chairs. Most prominent are those that offer grilled chicken or “pollos al carbón”. These are easy to spot by the smoke coming out of the back of the truck or trailer which has been outfitted as a grill burning local, native charcoal. The wood smoke flavor brings out perfect seasonings to produce an excellent tasting chicken, either to take out or eat there. There are also several side dishes from which to select. They go fast so one must stop and buy while they are available. Then there are the numerable “pincho” stands which sell chicken or pork meat on a wooden skewer of kabob, cooked over a small backyard style grill, lightly brushed with a sauce. These can show up at small gatherings and events especially at night, due to their portability and mobility. They’re perfect before or after a cold beer. Puerto Rico is quite famous for the fritters or “frituras” which are practically sold everywhere. These are identified by the glass enclosed windows with the glowing heat lamps to keep them warm. The fritura stand heading down to Jobos Beach is very popular and offers a wide choice of turnovers or “pastelillos.” The hot fillings range from chicken, meat, and fish to pizza and cheese. Available since early in the morning, many people have a few coming and going from the beach. The fruit and vegetable stands are an excellent place to shop as they provide fresh papayas, bananas, avocados, pineapples, and others, all with a much better selection, appearance, and quality than is found in the supermarket. There are also cold fruit juices, sugar cane juice, “melao” and “cocos frios” which are fresh chilled coconuts. Any nomad wishing to acquire a sense of the true local flavors of the island can certainly find something for every taste, for a very reasonable price, on the side of the road.

Hay muchos vendedores a lo largo de las carreteras de Puerto Rico que especializan en una gran variedad de comidas, productos agrícolas y bebidas. Éstos vienen en todos los tamaños, desde carretillas pequeñas hasta cantinas rodantes, que ofrecen comida típica de Puerto Rico y frituras. Hay muchos restaurantes, panaderías y barras que tenían sus orígenes humildes en las carreteras y transformaron comida rica en éxito. En éstos y locales simil-ares todavía podrás encontrar lechón asado usualmente disponible los fines de semana, una tradición llevada desde los años cuando el lechón asado reinaba como numero uno en las comidas.

Las cantinas rodantes más populares tienen un alto volumen de ventas y clientela constante, suelen hacer un negocio especialmente rápido durante la hora de almuerzo ya que éstos proveen mesas y sillas bajo un área cubierta para comer. Los más prominentes son las que ofrecen pollo al carbón, estas son fáciles de ver ya que tendrán humo saliendo de su guagua o trailer, el cual ha sido transformado en una parrilla, quemando carbón local. La madera ahu-mada sazona perfectamente, el producto terminando es un pollo excelente, el cual puedes llevar a tu casa o comer ahí. También hay muchos acompañamientos para escoger. Se van rápido así que debes parar temprano y comprar mientras están disponibles.

Después están los numerosos puestos de pinchos que venden pollo o carne de cerdo en una brocheta asada con salsa ligeramente untada y cocinados en el grill común como el que tenemos en el patio de casa. Éstos se ven en pequeñas fiestas o eventos, especialmente de noche ya que son portátiles y fáciles de mover. Ideal antes y después de una cerveza bien fría.

Puerto Rico es famoso por sus frituras, las cuales están a la venta por todos lados. Éstos locales se destacan por sus vitrinas con lámpara brillando sobre las frituras para mantenerlas calientes. El puesto de frituras bajando la cuesta de Jobos es muy popular y ofrece una gran variedad de pastelillos. Éstos están rellenos de pollo, carne, pescado o pizza y queso. Dis-ponible desde tempranito en la mañana, muchos las disfrutan yendo y viniendo de la playa.

Los puestos de frutas y verduras son excelentes para hacer sus compras, proveen papaya, guineos, aguacates, piñas y otras frutas frescas con mejor selección, apariencia y calidad que los supermercados. También podrás encontrar jugos de fruta, maví, melao y cocos fríos.

Todo visitante que desee verdaderamente disfrutar de los sabores locales de nuestra isla po-drá encontrar algo para todo paladar, a un precio razonable, en la orilla de la calle.


To witness a group of people in a meditation or relaxation exercise can be a moving experience for anyone. Now imagine that group comprised of teenage girls and boys. Imagine them lying on the floor at the end of a yoga class in a relaxation exercise; stripped of their computers, cell phones, ipods, and to-do lists. This is ex-actly what is happening in many parts of the country as more yoga studios are beginning to offer classes geared to stressed-out teens. Not only do teens have an increased pressure for academic performance to be able to go to college and a to prepare for a fu-ture career, they also have pres-sure to perform well in sports and extra-curricular activities. On top of that, they are overwhelmed with technology and armed with gad-gets that never give them a mo-ment of silence.This continuous state of always being “on” throws the sympathet-ic nervous system (fight or flight response) into a constant state of overdrive, while the parasympa-thetic nervous system (rest and digest) is under active due to the lack of relaxation or moments of peace. Combined with the stress-es of their lives and the physi-ological changes they are experi-encing, this leads many teenagers to become angry, depressed and anxious. While they learn math, science and history in school, nobody teaches them techniques to manage their stress or how to calm their minds and bodies after an active day. The same way we try to equip teens with an educa-tion, we should equip teens with techniques to keep themselves emotionally and mentally healthy as well. Not only can yoga of-

fer teens physical benefits (that are rarely found in schools these days), but also physiological and psychological benefits.Practicing yoga gives teens a safe haven (physically and emotional-ly), a place where they don’t have to think about homework, social circles or text messages. On an-other level, yoga can help teens that seem to be heading down a vulnerable or dangerous path due to poor decision-making, because yoga is empowering. It is a mind-body practice that helps people increase body awareness. With this awareness comes a sense of control, and with this sense of control comes the realization that one can control their actions. This translates to an empowerment with decision making, to an em-powerment in the physical body and also an emotional empow-erment. Yoga helps adolescents with their struggle against low self-esteem, self-doubt, and the changes that arise emotionally and physically. So the next time your teenager seems stressed out, anxious or depressed, rather than taking them to the mall to buy them the next latest gadget; consider taking them to a lo-cal yoga studio to check out the class schedule. Make sure to ask questions to find out the class and teacher that best fit the needs of your son or daughter.Contemplar a un grupo durante su ejercicio de meditación o re-lajación puede ser una experien-cia conmovedora para cualqui-era. Ahora, imagínate un grupo de niñas y niños adolescentes . Imagínatelos acostados en el suelo después de una clase de yoga, sin computadora, celular, ipods ni lista de todo lo que les

falta por hacer. Esto es exacta-mente lo que está sucediendo en muchas partes del país a me-dida que más estudios de yoga están comenzando a ofrecer clases diseñadas para adoles-centes estresados. Además de tener presión en su rendimiento académico para ser aceptados a la universidad y prepararse para una carrera, tambien tienen pre-sión de ganar en deportes y ac-tividades extraescolares. Encima de eso, están abrumados con la tecnología y armados con toda clase de aparatos que no les dan un minuto de silencio. El estado continuo de siempre estar “prendido” hace que el sistema nervioso simpático (reflejo de pelear o huir) permane-zca en un estado constante de sobrecarga, mientras el sistema nervioso parasimpático (descanso o relajación) no está activo debido a la falta de relajación o momen-tos de tranquilidad. Esto combi-nado con el estrés normal de sus vidas y los cambios fisiológicos que están experimentando, oca-siona que muchos adolescen-tes estén enojados, deprimidos y ansiosos. Mientras aprenden matemáticas, ciencias e historia en la escuela, nadie les enseña técnicas para el manejo de estrés o cómo calmar sus mentes y cu-erpos después de un día activo y repleto de estímulos. Del mismo modo que los equipamos con una buena educación también debe-mos proveerle a los adolescentes técnicas para que ellos puedan mantenerse saludables tanto en lo físico como mentalmente. Yoga, no tan solo ofrece beneficios físi-cos (programas que tanto care-cen hoy en nuestras escuelas) pero también beneficios fisiológi-cos y psicológicos.

La práctica de yoga les ofrece un lugar seguro (físicamente y emo-cionalmente) a los adolescentes, un lugar donde no tienen que preocuparse de las tareas, círcu-los sociales o mensajes de texto. A otro nivel, el yoga puede ayudar aquellos adolescentes que anden por caminos vulnerables o peli-grosos debido a falta de juicio o malos ejemplos, porque el yoga les capacita. Es una práctica de mente-espíritu que les ayudara a aumentar la conciencia del cuer-po. Con esta conciencia viene un estado de control, y con el estado de control viene la realización que uno puede controlar sus acciones. Esto se traduce en la capacidad de tomar decisiones, capacidad en el cuerpo físico y también en capacidad emocional. Yoga ayu-da a los jóvenes con sus luchas contra la baja autoestima, falta de confianza y los cambios que se presentan tanto emocionalmente como físicamente. La próxima vez que su adolecente le parezca estar estresado, ansio-so o deprimido en vez de llevarlo al “Mall” para comprarle un nuevo aparato, llévalo al estudio de yoga local para ver el calendario de clases. Asegura preguntar cuál clase y maestro es el más apro-piado para su hijo/a.
