T he Lilly family made their name known on the Cape after they invested millions to preserve large

swaths of land in Falmouth. As developers were mapping out the Beebe estate for 500

homes, Josiah Lilly III purchased the nearly 500-acre property of woods, with its two Victorian mansions in the early 1970s.

“What he did saved probably the biggest piece of open space that Falmouth will ever have,” the executive director of one of the historic mansion’s told the Times in 2002.

The family garnered their money through the Eli Lilly Co., a pharmaceutical dynasty found in the late 1800s. They also gave large contributions that

have been credited with the survival of Falmouth Hospital.

“It’s fair to say without his generosity the hospital would not be in existence today,” a chief administrative officer told the Times. “Joe Lilly was probably the largest benefactor in the history of the hospital, but he always did it anonymously.”

Much of the family settled, at least for the warmer seasons, in Saconesset Hills, a private neighborhood on the west side of Falmouth. Bordering the Little Sippewissett Marsh, the
