The Elim Pentecostal
Church, Huddersfield, was
formed in 1 931 with a
message of salvation and a
demonstration of the Holy
Spirit’ s presence in
Pentecostal power.
We are an international
congregation of all ages,
spreading the good news
of Christ in our services,
through small groups, and
out on the streets. Our
Sunday morning services
offer you the chance to let
the Word of God impact
your l ife and meet others in
a friendly atmosphere of
both fellowship and worship
with a full range of
children’s activities from a
crèche to a teenagers’
group. We are a servant-
hearted church, providing
practical care in the
community and touching
those on the fringes of
society, including refugees
and those with drug and
alcohol problems. Our
desire is to see people grow
in their faith in Christ in our
wide variety of weekly
meetings for all ages, areas
and ethnic backgrounds.
There is something for you.

Queuing has been
called a British pass
time. It is something
that I personally find
irritating. In traffic, if
one lane seems to be
going faster there is a
temptation to queue hop to try and get ahead.
For those who have battled their way through
the London Underground at rush hour, there
are queues everywhere. A form of queuing
etiquette on the tubes escalators i s that people
stand to the left hand side leaving the right
hand side free for people walk up or down
who are in a hurry. However, a three-week trial
run in December 2015 at London Underground
Holborn station proved that i f people stood on
both sides of the escalator queues were
reduced by 30% as more people could use
them at the same time. The principle of
everyone travel l ing together at the same pace
means more people can travel without
queuing. Rushing ahead means an individual
gains at the expense of others.
In scripture there were those characters who
wanted to rush ahead at the expense of others.
The brothers James and John requested that
they could si t closest to Jesus in his coming
Kingdom. They seemed to be jostl ing for
posi tion amongst the disciples wanting to push
themselves ahead of the queue to Christ.
Jesus’ response to His disciples arguing as to
who was the greatest was to say that, “I f
anyone would be fi rst, he must be last of al l
and servant of al l” (Mark 9:33). The ‘way of the
world’ i s to push ahead at the expense of
others. Jesus turns this on i ts head saying that
to be great i s to serve others. On the cross
Jesus showed us the ultimate example of this in
His selfless sacri fice for our sin and shame so
we can be right with God. Setting aside His
glory in heaven He was and is the servant king.
At Holborn tube station, Transport for London
are extending the trial for six months. They are
working with the Behavioural Science
department at the London School of
Economics to develop a variety of messages to
encourage commuters to fol low the new rules.
Honouring God in the queuePastor Michael Reid
June 201 6 3encounter
Tube staff wi l l even be using megaphones to
encourage commuters to change their queuing
culture and stand on the left and the right. Yet
even with the evidence of i ts benefi ts 63% of
people in an Evening Standard onl ine survey
are against the idea. I t seems the ‘get ahead of
others at any costs’ cul ture is going to be hard
to change.
I wonder i f we can see the wisdom of
honouring one another that changes the
culture of where we l ive, work and move?
What a megaphone can’t change I bel ieve
Jesus can. But i t needs people to take His
servant mandate to heart and l ive i t out.
I f I started to be more patient in the car, at the
supermarket checkout, on an escalator,
honouring and preferring others, perhaps in a
smal l everyday way there is a sense of God’s
Kingdom coming and His wi l l being done. To
see Jesus change our nation for His glory, i t
means a change of atti tude in the smal l and big
things; being fai thful to Jesus in the smal l
things so we can be fai thful to Him in the big
things. My prayer is that we wi l l honour one
another in everything, that God wi l l be
honoured. . . even when queuing.
The ‘way of
the world’ is
to push
ahead at the
expense of
others.

A
powerful
and rich
man, a
beautiful
but
disobedient wife, the search
for a new wife, a beauty
contest and parties – not
forgetting a villain! All the
ingredients of a television
‘soap’? No, not a television
‘soap’ but from the Bible: the
book of Esther.
The man was King
Ahasuerus, who ruled over the
Persian Empire, the
disobedient wife, Queen
Vashti – banished because of
her disobedience. There began
a search for a new queen. The
King sent out a decree and
young women were brought to
the King’s harem at the fortress
of Susa. Among them was
Esther, a beauti ful young
orphan girl , the cousin of
Mordecai . Esther was a Jewish
girl but kept her national i ty a
secret.
The young women had
twelve months of beauty
treatment before the time
came for them to be brought
before the King. Esther’s turn
came and the King loved her
more than any of the others
and he chose her as his
Queen. Esther’s cousin,
Mordecai , was appointed a
palace official .
Several years later, onto the
scene comes the vi l lain of the
piece – Haman. Promoted by
the King, making him the most
powerful official in the Empire.
He was a proud man. At the
King’s command al l the King’s
officials had to bow down
before Haman. Mordecai
refused to bow down and
Haman was furious about this.
Knowing Mordecai to be a
Jew, in his rage he didn’t just
want to lay hands on Mordecai
alone, but wished to destroy
al l the Jews in the Persian
Empire. Genocide is
threatened!
Haman uses his influence
and persuades the King that i t
would not be in the King’s
interests to let the Jews l ive. A

decree, sealed with the King’s
ring, i s i ssued that al l the Jews
must be ki l led. The King and
Haman then si t down together
to drink!
Mordecai and the Jewish
people, on hearing of this
planned massacre, cry out in
fear and distress. Mordecai
entreats Esther to go to the King
and plead for her people.
Esther is very fearful to go
uninvi ted into the King’s
presence, but Mordecai tel l s
her, “Don’t think that because
you’re in the palace you wi l l
escape. Rel ief and del iverance
for the Jews, i f not from you,
wi l l come from another place.
Who knows if perhaps you
were made Queen for just
such a time as this?”
I sn' t i t amazing that God
promises to save His people but
gives Esther the opportuni ty to
be a part of His plan? What
opportuni ties has God put
before you to be part of His
divine plans?
Esther, despi te her great fear
and dread, puts on her royal
robes and dares to enter into
the King’s presence. Esther is
welcomed by the King and he
asks her what i t i s she wants,
what is her request? In great
rel ief at the King’s favour,
Esther at this point simply
invi tes the King and Haman to
a banquet that very day which
she has prepared. The King and
Haman enjoy the banquet and
drinking wine together and are
pleased to accept Esther’s
invi tation to another banquet
the fol lowing day.
At this second banquet the
King asks Esther, “Tel l me what
you want, Queen Esther, what
is your request?” Esther, having
now to reveal her own
Jewishness at great danger to
herself, makes an impassioned
plea for the l ives of her people
to be spared. Esther’s speech
has a dramatic effect on the
King. Haman is exposed as the
evi l man he is and the tables
are turned. The massacre of the
Jews is thwarted.
There is much more intrigue
and twists and turns in the
book of Esther than is told here.
The book is a powerful
testimony of God’s providence
and hand of protection over His
people. Read the book of
Esther for yourselves.
Esther was chosen and used
by God in what seemed a
hopeless si tuation. We too are
chosen by God “for such a time
as this”. We are put where we
are for a purpose. I f we look to
God and choose to pray and be
guided by the Holy Spiri t we
can be used by God to have an
impact on our fami l ies,
neighbours, work col leagues –
al l those we come into contact
with. Though few of us wi l l
ever be in such a posi tion as
Esther’s, we al l have a part to
play in God’s ongoing plans.
What
opportunities
has God put
before you to
be part of His
divine plans?

Here’s a little riddle for you:
what do parsley, roasted egg
and salty water have in
common? They are all found
in the Passover meal.
I t’s been some months since
we started our regular
meetings to pray for Israel and
ask to God that His wi l l and
plan be fulfi l led over His
chosen nation.
Though smal l , our group is
fai thful in meeting together to
grow in knowledge about
Israel and we have taken a
closer look at issues such as
God’s Covenant with Abraham
and his descendants, the
Mosaic Covenant, and recently
we have started working our
way through Jewish
festivals (seven in
total ) .
In December, we
had a del ightful
discussion and
teaching on
Hanukkah – the feast
of Dedication (see
John 1 0:22) and just
a few weeks ago we
celebrated Passover
(Pesach in Hebrew), which
leads into the Feast of
Unleavened Bread.
The Passover meal atTomek and Wanda’s
The feast of Passover is the
fi rst of the Jewish feasts. I t i s a
celebration of God’s
redemption of Israel from
Egyptian slavery and God’s
judgment on Pharaoh and his
armies.
During the Passover evening,
we were able to rel ive the
symbols from the celebratory
supper (cal led Seder) to
commemorate the remarkable
night of God’s del iverance of
Israel (see Exodus 12), and we
uncovered numerous treasures
relating to Jesus being the
‘Passover Lamb’ (1 Corinthians
5:7).
God had commanded Moses
to fol low speci fic instructions
concerning Israel ’s redemption
from slavery in Egypt. We
sampled di fferent foods (see
below) symbol ic of hope/new
l i fe, suffering/sacri fice and
tears. They are served to
remind the Israel i tes what i t
meant to be in captivi ty.
Our Passover meal was
complemented by Jewish
prayers reci ted in Hebrew,
including the one which Jesus
prayed when He was
celebrating His last Seder as
per Luke 22:1 9-20.
I t was our joy to be able to
reflect on each individual
symbol of the Seder to remind
ourselves of the Bibl ical
history and i ts meaning in the
New Testament.

• ADMIT that you have sinned,

• BELIEVE that Jesus, God’s only

the dead conquering the power

• COMMIT your l i fe to Him.
This involves being truly sorry

The simple prayer below is one you
can pray if you want to accept

truly sorry, and now I turn away
from my past sinful life toward you.
Please forgive me. I believe that
