Proper Installation of Windows 7 XP Modeby Val D. Steed, CPA, MA, CITP

Windows 7 is the best operatingsystem, to date, from Microsoft and aclear winner. This is the first timeMicrosoft has ever released anoperating system and not increased thehardware requirements. With thatbeing said, Windows 7 is very popularbut not perfect. Both Vista andWindows 7 struggle with olderapplications that were designed to runon Windows XP and prior. To solvethis, Microsoft has given theprofessional IT community a great gift –XP Mode.

XP Mode is a vastly improvedversion of Virtual PC. XP Modeintegrates easily with USB drives, localhost OS drives, and even networkeddrives and printers. This was a bigchallenge for prior versions of VirtualPC. Only VMware was good enough touse in conjunction with seriousbusiness applications. Not anymore. In many ways, it seems that XP Mode ismuch easier to use than the popularVMware Desktop. Especially when youconsider that you can add XP Modeapplication icons to the start menu ofWindows 7 and run as though theywere installed in the base Windows 7operating system. Also consider thatmany Windows 7 users will use XPMode to isolate problematic programsfrom their main operating system(Windows 7) so they don’t muck up themain OS. Hence, this is an extremelyattractive feature of Windows 7.

XP Mode is available in thefollowing versions of Windows 7:

• Windows 7 Professional• Windows 7 Ultimate• Windows 7 EnterpriseXP Mode is not installed with the

standard installation of any of theseversions of Windows 7. It requiresusers to go to the following Microsoftwebsite and download the neededcomponents: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx

Or, you can easily search withGoogle or Bing on the term XP Modeand find this site.

This is where it can get a bit dicey, but if you pay attention to thefollowing steps, you will not make thesame mistake I made last month. Getthis wrong and you will either bogdown your machine, which I did, orcrash it altogether, which I did rightafter bogging it down and trying to fixthe mistake. You must get this rightfrom the start. Here are the steps:

1. Before you start downloadinganything, know your hardware! Youmust determine what capabilities youhave in your processor. Look up yourspecific processor chipset on eitherAMD or Intel’s website to see if thechipset supports hardwarevirtualization. The graphic belowshows that my new laptop does havehardware support for virtualization, afact that I assumed would not bepresent in this new smaller, lighterlaptop. I was wrong. So I loaded allthree elements of XP Mode when Iactually only needed the first two.Read the fine print carefully and you

will see that Microsoft warns you aboutthis right on the site.

2. Next, follow the step marked step2 on the website and select yourversion of Windows 7 and language.

3. Now, you will see three buttonsappear on the screen at the bottom.

4. Download and install the filesassociated with the first button(Windows XP Mode).

5. Download and install the filesassociated with the second button(Windows Virtual PC)

6. Halt! Do you need the thirdelement? If you have hardware supportfor virtualization, you do not need thisthird set of files. Stop. You are donewith the website. Skip step 7 and go tostep 8.

7. If, and ONLY if, you do NOT havehardware support for virtualization, download and install the filesassociated with the third button(Windows XP Mode Update). This isnot for all systems, only those that do

not have the hardware level nativesupport for virtualization.

8. Now, select Windows XP Modefrom the Start menu (Virtual PC Folder)and it will begin the installationprocess.

From here on, it becomes a standardWindows XP installation into thevirtual machine including anti-spyware,anti-virus, etc. Complete the XP Modeinstallation, close and be sure to changethe default RAM allocated to the XPMode Virtual PC by selecting Virtual PCconsole from the Virtual PC Folder. Irecommend 1.5 MB of RAM for heavyusers and 1 MB for casual use of XPMode. You must have at least 4 GB ofRAM in your Windows 7 system toenable you to allocate this much to XPMode.

Enjoy! A proper installation of XPMode should greatly enhance yourexperience with Windows 7.

Tech Bit 60: Time to Update Your Website? Is your website starting to look “so

last century?”When was the last time you posted

new content on your website?Does it have a date last updated on

the bottom that says you have ignoredit since 2007? Or longer?

Even if you aren’t Amazon.com orZappos.com, your customers andpotential customers are probablyfinding you more often by Googlingyou than looking you up in a phonebook, if they still have phone books.Try looking your business up onGoogle, Bing and/or Yahoo. Does itappear in the first page of results?

I wouldn’t get excited if you don’tappear on the first page, especially ifyou typed just your business name andit is relatively common. But if you typeyour business name, the city and thestate and don’t show up, there may besearch engine optimization (SEO)problems on your site. And anotherreason it may be time for a newwebsite.

SEO is a huge subject, there are

many books written about it. Andthere are several multi-day conferenceson SEO every year. Plus it is a movingtarget, the algorithms used by thesearch engines in ranking your site arealways changing.

But one measure every searchengine uses in their ranking is howrecently your content has changed.Newer content is assumed to be morecurrent and therefore more relevant.

Also, like women’s fashion, websitedesign is constantly changing. Whatwas a reasonable website design 5 yearsago now looks dated compared to whatother companies are doing. Like anyadvertising or brochures you mighthave, that first impression you givewhen a visitor comes to your website iscritical. Especially since they might justclick their back button and return tothe search results page if you don’tcapture their attention in just a fewseconds.

Over the next couple of articles I’llcover more about building your newimproved website.

But in the mean time, be thinkingabout what you want a customer, orpotential customer, to see in the first 10to 20 seconds when they visit yourwebsite. Usually if you haven't hookedthem by then, you can figure they havehit the back button and are lookingdown their search results list for thenext website.

Then if you can keep them on yourwebsite, think of all the questions theymight want answered about yourcompany, your products or services, and how to buy and use them. Onethought, since people buy from people, make sure that you profile anyone yourcustomer might deal with. Our thirdgeneration website, done back in 1998,had a page for each employee to sharewith their friends and family. Longbefore Facebook and social networking,it put a human side to our companythat is still applicable now.Gregg Marshall, CPMR, CSP, is a speaker, author andconsultant. Social Media ‘How To’ for CPA Firms: Using Google Insightby Roy Keely, Xcentric

There are tons of ways a CPA firmcan use Social Media that are notrelated to Twitter or Facebook. Here isone that many times goesunmentioned but that I find practicaland enlightening because it reinforcestraditional marketing tactics that areeasier to understand.

Take a tip from the CDC (Center forDisease Control) and their use oftechnology.

The CDC has turned to Google inrecent years to predict outbreaks of theflu, disease, and other viral nuisances.Google is able to help because ourculture often turns to the web to searchfor what ails us.

For example, when your 5 year-oldchild tells you they have a sore throat, you may take a peek and witness reddots throughout their mouth. Youthen turn to Google to see whatinformation is out there regarding adiagnosis and possible cure. If you didthe search I mentioned above, youwould find this article that mentionssome helpful tips in diagnosing strepthroat. The CDC, in turn, followstrends in what people are searching foron the web and from what parts of thecountry they are coming from. This

allows them to be nimble with theirpublic messaging and campaigns inattempt to head off outbreaks beforethey become widespread.

“So how does this help my marketingefforts as a CPA?”

People, perhaps more than whenthey are sick, turn to the web (akaGoogle) to get answers to the financialquestions they are asking, bothpersonally and professionally. When itcomes to your local market, what arethe hot topics? What local tax issues areseeing rising interest? This is where atool called Google Insight can help youfind the relevancy of financial mattersin your firm’s market.

This tool provides ‘insight’ on howto market. It doesn’t do any marketing foryou, that’s still your job…but it can helpyou determine what/how you market.

Examples of how to use GoogleInsight

– Firm Example: CPA firm locatedin Columbus, OH with the abilityto help businesses understand andimplement GAAP

Questions:• What interest is there in GAAP inour local market?

• What should we do to market our

expertise? The data:• Use Google Insight to do thefollowing search

• You find out your region is in the‘Top 10 Metro’ areas in the US thatis searching for help on GAAP.(See Fig. 1.)

• You find out the way people aresearching for help is by searchingfor ‘IFRS vs GAAP’. Google hasactually deemed it a ‘breakout,’which means that lots of peopleare using that terminology to findinformation relevant to thesubject. (See Fig. 2.)

How to use the data:• You have confirmed the interest inyour local area for knowledgeregarding GAAP.

• Host a webinar for localcontrollers, CFOs, etc explainingthe difference between the twostandards – call the webcast ‘IFRSvs GAAP – How to proceed withconfidence’.

• Do a mail piece to a list of contacts(building a list is another topic)drawing attention to your firm’sexpertise in GAAP.

• If you have a cold call campaign,

develop a script around the subjectand start making dials (or the firmyou have hired).

• Write 2-3 articles explaining GAAP.• If you have a blog, blog about thissubject. Call it ‘IFRS and GAAP:Understanding the differences.’ Domultiple posts and pull from thecontent you used to write thearticles mentioned above.

• Find local gatherings offinancially-minded people andsend them a speaker sheet/bio thatmentions this as a desired subjectamongst the business decisionmakers and your availability tospeak on the matter

The Logic behind using a tool such asGoogle Insight

The above example is not all thatimportant…the logic is. The reality isthat there is a tool readily available andin a previous lifetime would have costmillions to tap into. But, today, it’sFREE, yes FREE, and only a few clicksaway. This tool can be used to findlocal financial interests and insight onhow to speak to them. As with anydata, decisions and actions around thedata are where the marketing battles arewon and lost. If you are like most firms, your talent problem has become amarketing/sales problem. Here is a toolfor your tool belt. Use it. Don’t just

think about it.

Other simple examples on how to useGoogle Insight.

• Proactive service example – Whenis the ideal time to send outinformation regarding W-2 formsto your clients? Per this chart itmakes sense to send it out onJanuary 17th because that’s whenpeople go hunting for it.

• Have a niche for helping people inbankruptcy? If so, perhaps see ifyour state is one of the top 10where people need the service.

• Let’s face it, not everyoneunderstands how to read balancesheets – even business owners.
