Almighty and eternal God, when Christ was baptized in the river Jordan, the Holy Spirit came upon him and your voice declared him your beloved Son. Keep all who are reborn of water and the Spirit as children of adoption in whom you are well pleased. We ask this through Christ, your Son. Amen.

What’s in your heart? We all like to be told, “Good job.” It’s even better to be told, “You’re a really great person.” Deep in our hearts, we all long to hear the words that Jesus heard as he broke through the waters of the Jordan at his Baptism: “You are my beloved child of whom I am well pleased.” Our truest identity is beloved son or daughter of God. Knowing our true identity tells us not only who we are, but also what our mission is. In Isaiah, God tells the servant leader, “I have formed you . . . as a light for the nations.”

My Dear Parish Family, So many of you have expressed condolences and promised prayers for me and my family as we mourn my mother’s passing on New Year’s Day. I am so grateful for all the love and support I have received from you all – parishioners, staff, faculty and friends. I am blessed. My mother, Joan M. Shaffer turned 80 in October, just a week before my brother John’s passing. Since about 6 months after my father’s death in June 2012, mom had been in assisted living in Jackson. About a half year ago she went into the “memory care” section for Alzheimer’s patients. One of the blessings my family had was that, while visiting mom on Christmas Eve, she was able to call all of us kids and grandkids by name. Knowing that our last time together was one in which she was still able to recognize us brings great consolation. I am also very thankful for all of the donations sent to the John L. Shaffer Memorial Scholarship Fund. I will be taking a little time off beginning this Monday the 12th and returning January 23. Please pray for me while I am away. God Bless, Fr. Scott

Ronan Tynan in Concert here at Saint Joseph’s on Thursday, March 19, 2015 at 7:00 pm. Mr. Tynan is known from his work with The Irish Tenors and his rendition of God Bless America at so many of the New York Yankees home games. Tickets sale will be announced soon. Spread the word and let’s fill Saint Joseph’s on our parish feast day for this great event!

Saint Thérèse of Lisieux lived in a Carmelite convent with her older sister Pauline. Pauline was with Thérèse throughout her brief life, illness, and death at the tender age of 24. It is no accident that Jesus sent out his disciples in pairs. Having a spiritual companion, as Thérèse did, can be of great help and comfort on the sometimes difficult spiritual journey. Cultivate spiritual friendships in your own life. —Take Five for Faith
