    Congratulationson purchasing your Siemens Gigaset!Please read the following pages to find out how your telephone works so you can getthe best out of your new phone.

    Safety precautionsOnly use the power supply unit supplied,identified on the underside ofthe device.

    Only use approved rechargeable batteries of the same type.Never use ordinary (non-rechargeable) batteries. Otherwise health risksand personal injuries cannot be excluded.

    Insert rechargeable batteries in accordance with polarity symbols(the instructions are found in the handset battery compartment).

    Use the batteries indicated in these operating instructions(the instructions are found in the handset's battery compartment).

    Medical equipment can be affected by the use of the telephone. Observethe conditions in your environment (e.g. doctor's practice).

    The handset can cause an unpleasant humming sound in hearing aids.

    Do not install the base station in bathrooms or showers. The handset is notsplashproof (see also page 100).

    Do not use the telephone while driving a vehicle (Walkie-Talkie mode).

    Telephones must be switched off at all times in aircrafts (Walkie-Talkie

    mode). Prevent accidental activation.

    Do not operate the telephone in environments where there is risk of explo-sion (e.g. paint shops).

    Ensure that the operating instructions are included when passing on yourGigaset to a third party

    Dispose of batteries and telephone in an environmentally friendly manner.

    Not all functions described in these operating instructions are available in allcountries.

    Installing the base station

    Notes on the installation

    The base station is designed for operation in rooms with a tempera-ture range from +5 C to +45 C. Install the base station in a centrallocation in the home, for example in the hall.

    Range and reception strength

    The base station range is approx. 300 m outdoors and up to 50 m in-doors. The receive strength display shows the quality of the radio con-tact between the base station and the handset:

    G Avoid exposing your Gigaset to heat sources, direct sunlightor other electrical equipment.

    G Protect your Gigaset against moisture, dust, corrosive liquidsand vapours.

    Inserting the batteries

    G Insert the batteries ensuring correct polarity see figure on left.G Replace cover and push gently upward until it clicks into place.

    G To open, press the grooved area on the cover and slide back.

    Placing handset into base station and charging the batteries

    Before activating your handset, place it in the base station with the dis-play facing upward. After approx. one minute, the handset's internalnumber is displayed (e.g. INT 1). Successful registration is signalledby a confirmation beep (crescendo tone sequence).

    Leave the handset for approx. five hours in the base station to chargethe batteries, as they are not charged in the factory. The charging sta-tus icon flashes on the handset to indicate that the batteries are beingcharged:

    Note:Your Gigaset is now ready for operation. Your answering machine isset with a standard announcement. Please set date and time (seepage 11) so that the time of incoming calls can be noted correctly.

    The display is protected by a plastic film.Remove the protective plastic film!

    G Only insert the recommended rechargeable batteries (seepage 104). Never use ordinary (non-rechargeable) batteries as

    they may pose a health hazard or cause injury.G Never use non-Siemens charging units as these may damage

    the batteries.

    Push the belt clip onto the back of the handset until the side protru-sions click into place.

    Activating/deactivating the handset

    a To activate/deactivate, hold down the end call key you will hear theconfirmation beep *.

    Activating/deactivating keypad protectionYou should disable the handset keypad if you are going to carry thehandset in your pocket or bag. This prevents numbers being dialled byaccident.If there is an incoming call, the key lock is automatically deactivatedand re-activated after the call has ended.Accepting a call: press the talk key c .

    To activate/deactivate, hold down key you will hear the confirmationbeep*!

    G Once the initial charging operation is completed you can re-place your handset in the base station after each call. Charg-ing is controlled electronically. This ensures optimum charg-ing and prolongs battery life.

    G The batteries heat up during charging. This is normal and not

    dangerous.

    G The battery charging status is correctly displayed only afteruninterrupted charging/discharging. You should thereforeavoid opening the battery compartment unnecessarily.

    The handset is activated as soon as you insert the batteries andplace the handset in the base station.

    Date and timeYour Gigaset can act as an organizer and alarm clock tohelp you keep your appointments.

    Setting the date and the time

    You need to set the date and time so that the date andtime when messages or calls are received can be dis-played correctly.You can also set the clock mode to either 12 h (am orpm) or 24 h display.

    Open the menu.

    The current setting is displayed.

    Entering the date

    e.g.] Enter the day/month/year (e.g.: 05.20.01, as shown).D Scroll forward one line.

    Entering the time

    e.g. ] Enter the hours/minutes (e.g.: 19.05 h, as shown).Factory default: 24 h mode. If am or pm isdisplayednext to the time, 12 h mode is activated. If you movethe cursor to the time field, you can change from am topm using the left display key.

    You can use your handset as an alarm clock.

    Prerequisite: The date and time are already set

    (see page 11).

    Activating the alarm clock

    The active alarm clock rings every day at the time en-tered. If you have set a time for the alarm call, this isindicated by the icon in the display.The telephone is idle:

    Open the menu.

    Turning off the alarm call

    An alarm call is signalled in the same way as an incom-

    With the call director, an external caller can directly callan internal number (see page 81). During this functionthe answering machine must be activated.After dialling your telephone number, the caller hearsthe standard announcement or the direct inward dial-ling announcement as recorded.

    The caller then has five seconds in which to dial a hand-set's internal number.

    All handsets ring if the called party does not answer.

    If there is still nobody to answer the call, the answeringmachine (see page 70) will pick up the call.

    Error sending an SMS

    Call charges are incurred by interrupting a transmis-sion.

    The following error codes may be displayed:

    E0: SMS messages cannot be transmitted if the sta-tion number transmission feature is not enabled.

    FD: SMS messages cannot be received if the SMScentre number is missing or incorrectly stored. En-sure that the fixed networks SMS centre numberwas correctly stored (see page 55).

    If you were unable to receive any SMS messages, youprobably did not activate the calling line identification(CLIP) feature at your telephone connection. Activationvia the telephone network provider is necessary.

    If your Gigaset was unable to receive any SMS mes-sages, the telephone numbers of the SMS centres are

    stored in your telephones caller list. Please deletethese telephone numbers in the caller list.

    SMS with ISDN PABXs

    Example:

    Your Gigaset is connected to an ISDN PABX. SMS messages can besent from all Comfort handsets.

    SMS with DID-capable PABXs

    SMS receipt:If your Gigaset is connected to a PABX that supports direct inward di-alling, it can only receive SMS messages if the CLIP number was for-warded to the PABX extension. The CLIP evaluation of the SMS cen-tres telephone number is performed in the Gigaset.

    SMS transmission:

    When sending SMS messages, the senders telephone number issometimes sent without the extension number. It is thus not possiblefor your partner to answer.

    Having an answering machine record every incoming

    call during your absence is so convenient. It is operatedon the handset and is ready for use as soon as yourbase station is activated.

    Operating the answering machine is made easier byappropriate displays on the handset and by announce-ments that you can hear on the handset.

    Unless you set the date and time (see page 11), record-ed messages will not be time stamped.

    In addition to the telephone's answering machine, youcan use an answering machine service offered byyour network provider (e.g. mailbox). None of the fol-lowing functions relates to the network provider's an-swering machine. Check with your network providerfor these.

    Activating/deactivating the AMYour answering machine is activated and ready for op-eration once your base station has been put into serv-ice. For recording messages with a time stamp, you

    need to set the date and time (see page 11). The an-swering machine uses the standard announcementstored until you record your own announcement.

    You can check your base station's answering machinefrom any other telephone (e.g. hotel phone, pay

    phone).Prerequisite:

    You can only operate your answering machine remotelyif you have already changed the factory default PIN(0000) at home (see page 95).

    You have two options forchecking the answering ma-

    chine remotely.

    1st option via a telephone with tone dialling(DTMF)

    o Dial your own telephone number.When you hear your announcement:

    9 o press key and enter PIN. You are informed whethernew messages have been recorded.

    You will hear the new messages. You have the follow-ing options:

    1 Go to the start of the current message.Go to previous messages (press repeatedly).

    or2 Pause.Continue (press once more).

    or3 Go to the next message.Go to subsequent messages (press repeatedly).

    or: Mark the message as new.

    or0 Delete the current message.

    For remote replay, your telephone must supporttone dialling (DTMF). You can hear a tone whenyou press a key.

    settingsThe answering machine has already been preset foryou at the factory. You can however make individualsettings using the handset.

    Charge saving function (number of rings)

    For remote operation you can set how many times thetelephone rings before the answering machine is acti-vated. You can choose between two to nine rings andan automatic charge saving function.

    With the automatic charge saving function (factory de-fault)the answering machine is activated after:

    G 2 rings: there are new messages.

    G 4 rings: no new messages have been received.

    You then know that if the telephone rings three timesthere are no new messages if you end the call now,you will not incur any call charges.

    Open the menu.

    You can set the maximum recording time for your an-swering machine if desired.

    In the factory default, the length of a message is120 seconds and the recording quality is standard(max. recording time: 15 min).

    If you improve the recording quality, the recording timewill be cut to approx. seven minutes.
