HELLO FELLOW BLONDE BREEDERS

The days are getting longer so that can only mean that spring is right around the corner. I know it from looking at the cows as well since they are starting to show that they are getting close to calving for about a March 1 start. This is about the norm for us as it allows for the checks to be a little bit further apart because it’s generally warmer, and the days are longer so it is easier to get a chance to do the weighing, needling and tagging in the light. Makes it a little bit safer as well if you have a protective mom or two in the bunch.

One of the interesting things about norms on the farm is that they are generally few and far between. There is always something that can happen that can make that last hair turn grey if you still have one that’s not. A not so funny at the time, but funny now thing happened to me the other day speaking of nothing being normal. I came home from the girls’ 4-H public speaking and went straight out to the barn to start chores. As I got closer I could hear water spraying somewhere. Yay I thought, -20C and I’ve got a water line broken under the water bowl. Having some tools handy I quickly undid the hose clamps and pulled the hose out and upon looking at it, it appeared to have been chewed by something. Hmmm, I thought, “What could it be?” So being a little bit more careful now that I thought there might be an encounter with some toothy wild critter, I took the side panel off and carefully peered under the bowl. To my surprise there was a big fat muskrat floating proudly on a raft of Styrofoam in his self-made heated pool. He was evicted rather quickly and after I finally got the water all scooped out of the depression under the bowl with one of Janet’s Pyrex measuring cups I couldn’t help but chuckle - even though I was half frozen and still mildly frustrated. So the moral of the story is always to expect the unexpected on the farm… especially when it’s really cold outside.

After hosting a very successful National Show and AGM in Olds, AB this past October the CBDA is glad to announce that the National will be held in Victoriaville, Quebec in 2017 over the Thanksgiving weekend. It will be a great chance to get to visit a beautiful part of the world especially at the time of the year when the hardwoods will be changing colors from green to bright reds and yellows. There will be more information in this edition of the Connection further in.

Results from the bull tests are starting to come in so it is time to start looking for that next herd sire if you need one. Don’t miss out on getting the chance to have your pick of the pen. It seems that the commercial cattlemen are leaning more towards the tans than they have in the last several years so it is a good chance to get some good blonde bulls into commercial herds to show off what they can do. Check out the bull test results on one of the association websites today. It looks like the cattle markets have stabilized quite nicely as well, but still being about a third lower than last year, it makes every pound you gain by using the best genetics you can make a difference.

In closing I hope you enjoy the advertising and information contained in the 2017 edition of the Connection and best of luck this calving season. Just remember you could have a champion in the making!

BONJOUR, CHERS AMIS ÉLEVEURS DE LA BLONDE

Les journées sont plus longues, c’est assurément un signe que le printemps arrive à grand pas. Un autre signe c’est en regardant les vaches, car elles montrent des signes que le vêlage est proche, probablement pour le début de Mars. C’est normal pour nous, car ça permet aux contrôles d’être un peu plus éloignés parce

qu’il fait généralement plus chaud et les journées sont plus longues, il est plus facile de les peser, vacciner et identifier en plein jour. C’est un peu plus sécuritaire aussi si vous avez une ou deux mamans protectrices dans le clos.

Une des choses intéressantes au sujet des normes sur la ferme c’est qu’ils sont généralement très rares. Il y a toujours quelque chose qui va arriver qui va nous faire grisonner un peu plus, s’il en reste à grisonner. Par exemple, pas si drôle à l’époque, mais drôle maintenant. Je suis rentré à la maison après avoir écouté mes filles parlé en public au sujet des 4-H et je suis allé directement à la grange pour commencer les corvées. À mesure que je me rapprochais, je pouvais entendre l’eau qui coulait quelque part. Bon j’ai pensé, -20C et j’ai une ligne d’eau

brisée sous le bol d’eau. Ayant quelques outils à portée de la main j’ai rapidement défait les crampes du tuyau et j’ai sorti le tuyau et en le regardant, il semblait avoir été rongé par quelque chose. Hmmm, j’ai pensé, “qu’est-ce que ça pourrait bien être ?” En pensant à un rongeur sauvage avec des grosses dents, prudence était de mise, j’ai pris le panneau latéral et j’ai regardé attentivement sous le bol. À ma grande surprise, il y avait un gros rat musqué flottant fièrement sur un radeau de styromousse dans sa piscine chauffée. Il a été expulsé assez rapidement et après que j’ai finalement ramassé toute l’eau sous le bol avec une des tasses à mesurer Pyrex de Janet, je ne pouvais pas m’empêcher de rire - même si j’étais à moitié gelé et encore légèrement frustré. Donc, la morale de l’histoire est de toujours s’attendre à l’inattendu sur la ferme ... surtout quand il fait vraiment froid dehors.

Après avoir organisé le National Show et l’AGM à Olds, Alberta en octobre dernier qui a été un très grand succès, la CBDA est heureuse d’annoncer que le National aura lieu à Victoriaville, Québec en 2017 pendant la fin de semaine de l’Action de Grâce. Ce sera une excellente occasion d’aller visiter une belle partie du monde surtout à l’époque de l’année où le feuillus change de couleurs, du vert au rouge vif et jaune. Il y aura plus d’informations dans cette édition de la Connection.

Les résultats des tests de taureau commencent à rentrer, il est donc temps de commencer à regarder pour un taureau pour votre troupeau, si vous en avez besoin. Premier arrivé, premier servi ! Il semble que les éleveurs commerciaux se penchent plus vers les peaux plus pâles qu’ils ont dans les dernières années, donc c’est une bonne occasion de mettre de bons taureaux blonds dans les troupeaux commerciaux pour montrer ce qu’ils peuvent faire. Consultez les résultats des tests de taureau sur l’un des sites Internet de l’association aujourd’hui. Il semble que les marchés du bétail se sont stabilisés assez bien, mais toujours environ un tiers de moins que l’année dernière, ce qui fait que vous pouvez faire une différence avec chaque livre que vous gagnez en utilisant la meilleure génétique.

En conclusion, j’espère que vous apprécierez la publicité et les informations contenues dans l’édition 2017 de la Connection et en vous souhaitant une bonne saison de vêlage. N’oubliez pas que vous pourriez avoir un champion en devenir !

SNP DNA update - This project has taken longer than expected, but is expected to be completed by the summer of 2017. Reduced pricing will be available until December 1, 2017. All of the samples are now at Delta Labs in Edmonton. About half of the requested Blonde samples have been converted and about 1/3 of the total requested samples have been done (65K of 200K). Individual samples cannot be pulled if specific DNA is needed, but the box containing the sample can be placed in a priority line so that it is completed more quickly than normal.

We are hoping to have access to a French DNA test by the fall of 2017 that will allow us to do Genomic trait testing on our Blonde cattle. With a hair sample, we could test for calving ease, growth traits, milk, carcass traits, etc. This test will also give results for Axonopathy, 1/29 Translocation, double muscling as well as some positive muscle traits that improve carcass quality.

A Breeder Handbook is on the way, and should be available on the Canadian Blonde website by the time you receive this publication. It contains historical information on Blonde cattle, informative articles, registration and performance program forms and other information that could be helpful to new and seasoned breeders alike.leave in Breeding timing info from last Newsletter

Nouvelles sur l’ADN SNP - Ce projet a pris plus de temps que prévu mais devrait être terminé d’ici l’été 2017. Des prix réduits seront disponibles jusqu’à Decembre 1, 2017. Tous les échantillons sont maintenant chez Delta Labs à Edmonton. Environ la moitié des échantillons de Blonde demandés ont été convertis et environ 1/3 du total des échantillons demandés ont été effectués (65K de 200K). Les échantillons individuels ne peuvent pas être traités si un ADN spécifique est nécessaire, mais la boîte contenant l’échantillon peut être placée en priorité de sorte qu’elle est terminée plus rapidement que la normale.

Nous espérons avoir accès à un test d’ADN français d’ici l’automne 2017 qui nous permettra de faire des tests de caractères génomiques sur nos bovins Blonde. Things have been pretty quiet in Alberta since the last update. The winter weather at times has been more normal than the last few years - colder temperatures. But as I write this it is raining and we have had three consecutive days near ten degrees on the plus side, and nights above zero as well.

The Alberta Blonde Bull Test started with a total of 15 bulls - 3 more than my last report due to some later arrivals. Little Creek Farms, Sprucevale Blondes, Upper Cache Blondes and Willow Springs Stock Farm are the contributors. As of the 56 day point there are four bulls significantly ahead of the others in terms of test gain - all of them around the 120 mark for test index and a 3.75 lbs/day gain. A polled PB son of Forty Acre Troy out of Liahn Poll Cat dam leads the way for Sprucevale Blondes, followed closely by a black polled PB son of Frostybrae Blackie out of a Dee Bran Eldyn daughter (Little Creek), a FB son of NAJ Galante by a Winstons Northern Image dam (Willow Springs) and a polled PB Hanover Special son from Upper Cache Blondes. The WPDA category is being lead by a Sundance Zephyr son out of an Igha dam at a 122 index followed by three other bulls at a 111-112 index - all four bulls consigned by Willow Springs Stock Farm. Full results are available on the Alberta & Canadian Blonde websites, and the next weigh day will be available by the time this magazine comes out. The test will be complete around April 1st, 2017 and bulls are available for sale by private treaty at any time so don’t wait if you are interested in a specific bull.

Hello out there from the Man-Sask Blonde Asso-ciation! A new year, a new government. What is good for the US A economy is good for Cana-dians-maybe. As there is a new President we are hoping for the best. The spectre of COOL and R-calf is still looming in the wings. It was enough worries that here in Canada we had a T.B. crisis to deal with and the idea of a pending carbon tax on the fuel we need for our jobs.

There has been some proposed changes in a lot of areas dealing with agriculture. Saskatchewan intro-duced the Western Livestock Insurance price to level out the cost/gain price of the beef industry. It was felt it was under utilized. There is also a forage insurance which might be beneficial to some seeing as how the weather has affected us so much this decade.

As a group, we have had a good year with bull sales to many different people, enough so that there were none offered for sale that were un-selected. The females offered did very well also. Since we are breeding for character development as in easy going, laid back temperament as well as all the other great attributes of the Blondes, we have developed an excellent reputation for having cattle that are very desirable in all aspects.

The Man-Sask Bull Test Station has set up its’ 53rd annual sale. They are video taping the bulls before the sale so that prospective buyers can see them before they actually run them through the ring. Online bidding is set to go and is very welcome. The general meeting for the Man-Sask association will take place after the sale at The Chalet.

I cannot close out with out referring to the weath-er as it is the engine that drives our production. It is still a roller coaster that we deal with, for good or bad, so we may as well enjoy the ride and keep on producing the best cattle in the world.

Another year has passed by too quickly! The weather in my part of the province the Nation’s Capital, has been hovering around the freezing mark for most of January and precipitation every second day it seems. It would be better if it were a little colder, too hard trying to keep everyone dry in the yard. Maybe it’s just me but the older I’m getting the less I’m enjoying working with or against the weather. It could be the pneumonia and a sinus infection I was battling for many months making me feel this way.

Our Blondes were well represented throughout the province this past year at fairs and plowing matches. Thanks to the breeders and 4H members who participated in those events, and congratulations to the winners. Good luck to our 2017 competitors and to promoting blonde cattle! The markets have shrunk back a little, hopefully it’s just a hiccup last doesn’t last too long for us. In Ontario our cow herd is shrinking along with our test stations. Hopefully everyone is taking advantage of the Canadian Performance Program that is offered to the membership at a low cost, by entering birth and weaning weights. The more breeders entering data will help our breed in the long run as well as individual farms having some EPD’s on their cattle.

The Cream of the Crop Sale offered some great cattle from our consignors. Thanks to everyone who made it a successful sale! The corner of the ring with the phones was a little quieter without Dave McNevan manning them this past year! We managed but you were missed! Six new buyers at the 2016 sale, our advertising money at work!?

The OBdAA AGM is at Bobby C’s in Bowmanville on Saturday March 25th starting at noon. A reminder for our members to bring an item for our ever popular mini auction. It is always entertaining!

I’d like to thank our Directors for an outstanding year, great job in your positions. Three directors are up for re-election, Eric Doran, Kirk McGee and Jeremy DeWeerd. Directors Paul Fee, Nicholas Boyd and Dave Payne have another year on the board. Nominations are to be sent to Paul Fee.

In 2016 the Ontario Blonde Association sponsored $80 each to fourteen , 4-H members that used Blonde animals for their projects. 7 different counties were represented.

Kylee Gray [04]My name is Kylee Gray and I am 10 years old from Jasper, Ontario. The name of my heifer is Crystal Diva. I am in the Grenville 4-H Beef Club. I have grown up beside the Crystal Farm, always walking down spending time with the cows, and looking forward to the day I turned 10 to be able to join 4-H to show cattle. I have went to Merrickville, Chesterville, Spencerville shows.

Emma [02] and Avery Kamelchuk [03] showed heifers in the Colinton 4-H club, and Avery had the Reserve Champion heifer. Avery also won her club junior showmanship, and went on to win the district showmanship title. She wrapped up a very good day by winning the junior district judging competition. Emma also had a good day placing 2nd in her club for intermediate showmanship, and winning the intermediate district judging competition.

After a 19 year hiatus, planning is underway for the 2017 Canadian National Junior Show. As with any event of this type sponsors and especially Junior participants are needed, so we hope we can count on everyone to make this event a great success. And Juniors please make sure your friends and 4-H mates know about this too. As I said - the more Juniors the better.

TENTATIVE DETAILS

Canadian National

Junior Show

• It will be a 2 day event held in conjunction with the Ontario Blonde Picnic.

• The event is planned for the August long weekend (Aug 5-6, 2017).

• The exact location in Ontario has yet to be decided.

• It is open to all members of the Canadian Blonde Association 21 years of age and under as of January 1, 2017. A Junior membership is $10/year, and can be purchased at the event or with pre-entries.

• Show classes planned are : Pee Wee (8 years and under), Open Purebred (older Juniors), Commercial Blonde (Older juniors), Junior Owned class and Showmanship.

• Animals do not need to be owned by the Junior member, except in the case of the Owned class.

• There will also be competitions for Judging, Print Marketing, Photography and Artwork.

• Awards will also be given to the Aggregate winners in each division, and top Herdsperson.

EY Reed Rigney needs no introduction. If

you don’t know him, it means you’ve likely never been in the same room as him.

When Reed talks, you listen. Not that you have a choice, but to some, maybe most, he’s known as the Canadian Blonde d’Aquitaine Encyclopedia Version 1. His passion for the breed, his love of cattle and his desire to have the very best of the best are always evident when he speaks.

Having been introduced to the breed by his grandfather, the late Hugh Rigney, one of the originals in the breed, it’s only fitting that Reed would win the inaugural Shirley Bilton Breeder of the Year Award. It was also Reed who brought the idea forward to the Canadian Board to honor Shirley Bilton, one of many initiatives he has undertaken.His contributions have not gone unnoticed, as to win this prestigious award you must be nominated by your peers. Rigney, who owns and operates Willow Spring Stock Farm, is active and involved in a variety of facets encompassing this breed. He holds a number of executive titles including President of the Alberta Blonde d’Aquitaine Association and Secretary for the Canadian Blonde d’Aquitaine

Association. He plays an integral part in the importation of frozen genetics, and is your one stop source for any domestic frozen genetics.

During the 2016 year, Reed represented Canada during the 20th annual Aquitanima

event in France. After

a week of farm visits and workshops, Reed prepared a presentation on Canadian Blonde genetics to a group of over 300 constituents. Without his research, finding grants and funding to send representatives as well as bring others to Canadian events, this would not have been possible. He exemplifies the true leadership, with the dedication to grow and expand the breed.

Also during the calendar year, Reed spearheaded the initiative to switch all genetic testing from Microsatellite to the more accurate SNP, which will also allow for advanced genomic testing. In this process, he voluntarily took the time to input and send all of the information for those wishing to convert their previously registered animals to the new lab, so those members could save significant costs compared to doing this individually. It would be hard for many to fathom the time and effort this task required. While most would be exhausted at this point in the year, Reed’s efforts continued. A firm believer in the performance program, not only did he input all BIO numbers for any Canadian member wishing to participate, he also managed a Bull Test station for those in the Western provinces to show off their Blonde bulls. Five breeders participated with a total of 17 bulls being on test under Rigney’s management.

Just for good measure, Reed organized the 2016 Canadian NationalShow and AGM hosted in Olds, Alberta in early October. The event was well attended with

members from nearly all provinces being present. Organizing an event of this size is no easy task, but as expected all in attendance had a wonderful time, sharing laughs, stories and ideas. Bringing a large string of eight cattle for the show, Reed’s WSS Farm took home Grand & Reserve Champion Male, along with Reserve Champion Female and Premier Exhibitor.

Congratulations to Reed Rigney on a well-deserved honor, from all the members of Canadian Blonde d’Aquitaine Association. And yes, you guessed it right…. Reed is the man in charge of getting all the content together for this publication!

Sa passion pour la race, son amour du bétail et son désir d’avoir le meilleur des meilleurs sont toujours évident quand il parle.

Il est titulaire d’un certain nombre de titres exécu-tifs dont le président de l’Association Blonde d’Aquitaine de l’Alberta et le secrétaire de l’Association Canadienne Blonde d’Aquitaine. Il joue un rôle essentiel dans l’importation de

la génétique congelée et est votre source unique pour toute génétique domestique congelée.Au cours de l’année 2016, Reed a représenté le Canada lors de la 20e édition de l’Aquitan-ima en France. Après une semaine de visites agricoles et d’ateliers, Reed a préparé un ex-posé sur la génétique blonde canadienne à un groupe de plus de 300 personnes. Sans sa recherche, trouver des subventions et des fonds pour envoyer des représentants ainsi que pour amener d’autres à des événe-ments canadiens, cela n’aurait pas été possi-ble. Il illustre le véritable leadership avec le dévouement à croître et à agrandir la race.En outre, au cours de l’année civile, Reed a lancé l’initiative de passer tous les tests génétiques de Microsatellite au SNP qui est plus précis, ce qui permettra également des tests génomiques avancés. Dans ce pro-cessus, il a volontairement pris le temps de saisir et d’envoyer toutes les informations pour ceux qui souhaitaient convertir leurs animaux déjà enregistrés au nouveau lab-oratoire, afin que ces membres pourraient économiser des coûts importants par rap-port à le faire individuellement. Il serait dif-ficile pour beaucoup d’imaginer le temps et l’effort que cette tâche a pris.

Alors que la plupart serait épuisé à ce stade de l’année, les efforts de Reed ont continué. Croyant fermement au programme de per-formance, il a non seulement inscrit tous les

numéros BIO pour tout membre canadien souhaitant y participer, mais il a aussi dirigé une station d’épreuve de taureaux pour que les éleveurs des provinces de l’Ouest mon-trent leurs taureaux Blonde. Cinq éleveurs y ont participé avec un total de 17 taureaux étant en épreuve sous la gérance de Rigney.

En plus de tous ses efforts, Reed a aussi or-ganisé l’Assemblée Générale Annuelle 2016 et le ‘’National Show’’ de l’Association Cana-dienne qui ont eu lieu à Olds, en Alberta, au début du mois d’octobre. L’événement a été très réussi par la participation de membres de presque toutes les provinces. Organiser un événement de cette taille n’est pas une tâche facile, mais comme prévu tous les participants ont eu du bon temps en part-ageant des rires, des histoires et des idées. En apportant huit de ses animaux au spec-tacle, la Ferme WSS de Reed a remporté le Grand Champion et Réserve Mâle ainsi que la Championne de Réserve Femelle et le Pre-mier Exposant.

For most the fall season brings about a sense of excitement as the National Show & AGM brings the breed together. This past fall was no exception, but it was also a bittersweet event for a long time breeder.

Myrna Flesch has dedicated herself to the breed for over 27 years, purchasing her first animal Syms Griff Jo 47S in February of 1990. She began her operation as Nordic Blondes until West Winds Blondes came in to being. Her cattle were housed and cared for in Innisfail at Bilton Farms. In 1992, with the help of Shirley Bilton, she built the West Winds Blondes homestead on land inherited from her parents near Stavely, Alberta. Although there are no longer any animals on the farm, Myrna still owns a few animals under North West Blondes, which are housed at Dusty Acre Blondes in Dawson Creek, BC.

During her early years in the breed, Myrna worked off the farm as Airport Manager in Lethbridge, a title she had held since 1979 when she was named first female Airport Manager in Canada. Upon retiring after 35 years with Transport Canada, she decided to get more involved in the Blonde breed, and in 1996 joined the Canadian board as a director. Ken Morrow and Lyle Hamman were great mentors to her during that first year, and in 1997 she would assume the role as Treasurer. In 2001 she had her first role as President, becoming the first female President of the Canadian Blonde d’Aquitaine Association. From 2003 to 2005 she voluntarily stepped away from the board, but upon her return would become Treasurer twice and President twice. In total, Myrna spent 17 very dedicated years serving the breed and its members.

With her health declining, and her ailments no longer allowing her to do the work necessary, she has passed along the torch to the next generation. She continues to sell genetics worldwide, something she has excelled at since the early 2000’s when, as she said, “I became comfortable with the use of the computer”.

On behalf of the Canadian Blonde d’Aquitaine Association and all of its members, Id like to extend a very big thank you to Myrna for all she has done, and wish her a wonderful time in her adventures ahead.

Pour la plupart, la saison d’automne apporte un sentiment d’excitation puisque le National Show & l’AGM rassemble la race. L’automne dernier n’a pas fait exception, mais c’était aussi un événement amer pour un éleveur de longue date.

Myrna Flesch s’est consacrée à la race depuis plus de 27 ans, en achetant son premier animal Syms Griff Jo 47S en Février 1990. Avec sa santé en déclin, et ses maux ne lui permettant plus de faire le travail, elle a passé le flambeau à la prochaine génération. Elle continue de vendre de la génétique dans le monde entier, quelque chose qu’elle excelle depuis le début des années 2000 quand, de ses propres mots, «Je suis devenu à l’aise avec l’utilisation de l’ordinateur».

Au nom de l’Association Canadienne Blonde d’Aquitaine et de tous ses membres, j’aimerais exprimer un très gros merci à Myrna pour tout ce qu’elle a fait et de lui souhaiter de merveilleuses aventures à venir.

It was very thoughtful of the Board and Membership to present me with Gift Certificates to my favorite restaurants particularly in view of the fact that I will be downsizing and moving off the farm soon. The years sped by and I was happy and honoured to be able to contribute in this manner. It gave me the opportunity to meet breeders across Canada. I have many fond memories to look back upon. Les membres du Conseil d’Administration et les membres de l’Adhésion ont été très gentil de me présenter des certificats-cadeaux à mes restaurants préférés en particulier puisque je vais réduire mon travail et éventuellement partir de la ferme. Les années ont passé vite et j’étais heureuse et honorée de pouvoir contribuer de cette manière. Cela m’a permis de rencontrer des éleveurs partout au Canada. J’ai beaucoup de bons souvenirs de ces années.

The Blonde breed has a long history of bull testing in Canada. As a terminal sire breed we recognize that performance is an important part of our success in this country. Bull tests have time and time again proven that Blondes are extremely efficient converters of feed to live weight pounds, carcass ultrasound has proven that Blondes have high lean meat yield and slaughter results have proven Blondes have excellent carcass cutability. In fact there are very few breeds that can match the Blonde breed for these traits, and none amongst the other major breeds in Canada.

As a performance based breed it is very important that we measure and track that performance across herds so that we can continue to improve the breed. The best way to do that is through the use of EPD’s.

The Canadian Blonde Association uses Beef Improvement Ontario (BIO) to generate performance information and calculate our EPD’s. Members are free to purchase a full BIO membership and use all the herd software options that are available via that route, but for smaller breeders the Blonde Performance Program may be a better option to track herd performance. We strongly encourage all of our membership to get on board.

This program is available to all Canadian Blonde Association members, and is a very cost effective way to collect performance information and generate EPD’s for your animals. Participants in this program receive reports containing adjusted weaning & yearling weights along with an index for their calves, EPD’s for cows/calves/sires and a MPPA index (maternal production) for their cows. The cost is $5/calf recorded each year.

The Canadian Blonde d’Aquitaine Association is building a library of pictures that can be used on the website and in upcoming newsletters. What a great way to expose our Blonde cattle to the world!

Each month one eligible winning photograph will be selected, and the winner will receive a $25 credit towards their next fullblood or purebred registration.

PHOTO CRITERIA • Include a complete shot of animal in photo (including feet, tail and full

head if possible).

• Limit of five pictures submitted per operation per calendar month.

• All photos submitted become the property of the Canadian Blonde d’Aquitaine Association and the Association will be able to use them accordingly (photo credit will be provided when possible).

• The Canadian Blonde d’Aquitaine Board reserves the right to not have a winner if it is deemed no picture is eligible in a particular month, and the decision is final.

PHOTO TIPS • Don’t cut off the head, feet, butt, nose! Don’t crop your photo -- let your ad

designer or webmaster crop the picture to give the best possible design for each individual situation.

• When you think you have the picture just right, take two steps back. Give

your designer lots to work with.

• Remember to identify your photographer or include a brief description of the shot.

• You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression. Make sure you take those pictures at a high enough resolution so your printer doesn’t have any trouble getting them ready for your next brochure or magazine ad.

The 16th Annual Cream of the Crop Sale was held on October 29, 2016 at Hoards Station Sale Barn, Campbell-ford, ON. An impressive line-up of top quality Blonde cattle drew a large crowd of buyers, bidders, and interested cattle folk alike.

T he 16th Annual Cream of the Crop Sale was held on October 29, 2016 at Hoards Station

Sale Barn, Campbellford, ON. An impressive line-up of top quality Blonde cattle drew a large crowd of buyers, bidders, and interested cattle folk alike. Seventeen consignors offered 38 lots, which brought an average of $2723.61. Top selling bull was Crystal Caesar 25C, consigned by Paul and Mary Ellen Ferguson of Crystal Farms and purchased by Richard Levert of Alexandria, ON for $4600. Top selling female was the two-time Ontario Blondes Top Show Female, Franmar Crystal 11C, consigned by Darren Dunham & Family, of Franmar Blonde Farm and fittingly purchased by Paul and Mary Ellen Ferguson of Crystal Farms for

$5000. Buyers and bidders, once again, spanned the country from British Columbia to Nova Scotia and all points in between. For the third year, attendees were able to crown a winner of the People’s Choice Award by voting for their favourite consignment. This year Reed Rigney of Willow Springs Stock Farm, Westlock, AB took home the banner sponsored by Acres Farms for his consignment, WSS Charlotte 9C, an eye catching 801X daughter. The purchaser, James Graham of Bull Moose Hill Farm from Belleisle, New Brunswick, also received a banner sponsored by Little Creek Farms. Several new buyers added Blondes to their herds this year and we wish them the best of luck and welcome them to the Association. Brian Down of Brileen Hill Farm graciously donated $50 to the purchasers of the top two selling animals in the sale along with $100 toward our 4-H members and we thank him for the generosity! Thank you, also, to the consignors, buyers, bidders, and all attendees for making this year’s sale another success!

Another year of the Ontario Blonde Point Shows is in the books! It was another success thanks to a dedicated group of breeders who put in the time and skill to keep our breed in the public eye. Again this year, the quest for Top Female, Top Male, and Premier Exhibitor began in August with our first point show at Campbellford Fair. An impressive lineup of cattle were a sure sign that there was going to be quite a race for the top honours. The points were calculated using the same system as previous years. Exhibitor’s animals were required to show at a minimum of three point shows (Lindsay Exhibition was mandatory) and to be considered a point show, at least three breeders and 18 Blondes showing were needed. The Ontario Fairs that qualified as point shows this year were Campbellford, Kinmount, Orono, Warkworth, and Lindsay. Markham Fair welcomed Blondes to show again this year, but with the National being held in Olds, Alberta the same weekend, the numbers weren’t quite there to make a point

show. Five of our breeders and their animals met the requirements and it was an exciting race to watch all season. Before the final show, the leading five females were within three points of each other. And in the end, two points separated the winner and runner-up. Franmar Crystal 11C defended her title and was named Top Female for the second year in a row. The competition for Top Male was tight as well, with two bulls switching from first to second place after every fair and a third making a go for the title late in the season. Donaleen Chachi 1C came out on top and defended his title for a second year, as well. For the third year in a row the Premier Exhibitor was Donaleen Blondes. Congratulations to The Dunham Families for putting together outstanding showstrings, yet again! Banners sponsored by the Ontario Blonde d’Aquitaine Association were presented to the winners. Thanks to all who participated in making this year another successful one in the showring!

In 2016 the Ontario Blonde Association once again sponsored $2000 towards the show incentive program. This program is a great way to assist Blonde breeders for their hard work and many hours preparing their cattle. Getting the Blonde breed in front of the public is key to promoting and marketing Blonde Cattle throughout Ontario, and we certainly appreciate the efforts of the members that got our breed out to 21 Fairs in 2016. Special mention goes to Donaleen Blondes with 46 entries at various Fairs this year.
