Circus Flora: a Child’s Christmas in Wales

Back by popular demand! Circus Flora returns to Powell Hall to collaborate with the STL Symphony in high-wire holiday fun for the family. Returning to create a special treat for the Christmas season Inspired by Dylan Thomas’s heartwarming poem are all your favorites including the gravity-defying Flying Wallendas. It’s Christmas, with a circus twist!

A Child’s Christmas in Wales is a prose work by the Welsh writer Dylan Thomas. Originally emerging from a piece written for radio, the poem was recorded by Thomas in 1952. The story is a retelling of a Christ-mas from the view of a young child; a Christmas past remembered in a nostalgic and simpler time. It is one of Thomas’ most popular works.

And so it begins when “One Christmas was so much like another, in those years around the sea-town corner now and out of all sound except the distant speaking of the voices I sometimes hear a moment

before sleep, that I can never remember whether it snowed for six days and six nights when I was twelve or whether it snowed for twelve days and twelve nights when I was six.”

A Child’s Christmas in Wales is Circus Flora’s second co-production with the St. Louis Symphony. The three performances in December will conclude Circus Flora’s 2012 season. Circus Flora is a nonprofit arts organization based in St. Louis, best known for its always affordable, family-friendly, big-top production every summer under the air-con-ditioned, red-and-white big top in Grand Center, St. Louis’ arts and entertainment hub, adjacent to Powell Hall.
