OREGON STATEMen's Track Preview

A lack of depth faces the Oregon State men's trackteam as the 1984 season approaches, but the Beaverswill try to make up for it by utilizing their blue chipprospects in several events.

New coach Chuck McNeil will inherit an OSU squadwhich has a number of impressive individuals, butinjuries and the Olympic Trials will keep a few keyathletes on the sidelines.

The Beavers' top distance runner, Gid Rysdam, willredshirt in 1984 to concentrate on the Olympic marathontrials. The senior was a cross country All-American andan NCAA qualifier in the steeplechase a year ago. Hissidekick in the steeplechase, Peter Warner, will alsoredshirt after suffering an industrial accident during hissummer job.

Add multi-purpose thrower Chris Waltman to the listof redshirts, and a lot of potential points will be on thesidelines this year. Waltman is sitting out 1984 to workon his strength and technique.

But McNeil is not without weapons. Coming off aredshirt year of his own is big Ron Schmidt, a 6-4 seniorwho should be among the best in the Pac-lO in the shotand discus this year. Schmidt will carry the weight forthe Beavers in the throwing events. He is a 61-foot plusshot putter and is just one-quarter of an inch from 200feet in the discus. Schmidt qualified for the NCAAchampionships in both events as a junior in 1982.

Outside of Schmidt, however, the Beavers have littlehelp in the shot or disc and no one in the hammer. Thejavelin, however, is a different story. Sophomore MikePedersen threw 245-6 in his rookie year and freshmanJim Williams of Corvallis has unlimited potential.

The Beavers also look strong in the jumps. JuniorKenny Taylor has a 52-11 triple jump to his credit and isa solid Pac-lO contender. In the long jump, LarryClemons went 25-10 last year, Gary McCullough topped24-0 and depth will come in the form of decathiete KevinKnight, also a 24-foot jumper. Transfer Tom Hildebrandcould be a factor.

The pole vault is shaping up as another OSU strongpoint with senior Scott Davis as the key. Davis cleared17-6 as a sophomore, but topped out at 17-0 last year.He has the potential, however, to be an 18-foot vaulter ifhe stays healthy. Another vaulter with great potential isGreg Likens, from nearby Junction City. The freshmanset an Oregon prep record last year with his 16-6 vault, fourth best mark in the nation. His Junction Cityteammate, freshman Nick Till, is already up to 15-6 andhas potential for the future.

OSU will be decent in the sprints, but the Beavers lackthe one standout with burning speed. Rex Brownreturns for his sophomore year as the Beavers' top hopein the 100 and 200, and will be joined by Clemons,Taylor, Hildebrand and freshman Mike Atkins.

"One of the highlights of last year was our 400-meterrelay team and three of the four members will be back,"noted OSU assistant coach Mike Chriss. "We should beokay again this year."

Brown, Clemons and Taylor were three of the fourrelay members; they will be joined by either Atkins or

Hildebrand this year. The 400 meters looms as a weak event for the Beavers,

who are without a true quartermiler. Decathletes GregFerguson and Kevin Knight should help, and middledistance runner Dave Anderton could drop down fromthe 800.

OSU is in the same boat in the hurdles, though JuniorSteve Wright will score some points this year, especiallyin the intermediates. Wr!ght has bests of 14.81 and 52.64and should break both this season.

"Steve worked out all fall with the cross country team,so he should be a lot stronger thisyear," Chriss said. "Hedoesn't have great speed, but he's got the strength anddetermination to help us."

Knight and Ferguson, again, will score points in thehurdles for OSU. Both came to OSU with stronghurdling backgrounds, but it is in the decathlon wherethey will stand out. Chriss feels both could place in thePac-lO championships in the decathlon and both willimprove on their personal bests.

The distance events will be quite interesting to watchthis year. OSU has three potential sub-i :50 half milers, but the man to watch in the distances this season will bein the 1,500. Dick Oldfield was an NCAA qualifier as a

junior in 1982, and OSU distance coach Gary Sieversfeels he could become as good as any miler OregonState has had.

"I think Dick could break Mark Fricker's school recordin the 1,500 meters if he can get into the right race,"Sievers said. "It wouldn't surprise me a bit, it wouldn'tsurprise Dick and I don't think it would surprise Mark."

Oldfield is also a sub-i :50 half miler, joining sopho-more standout Anderton and the ever-improving CraigNelson, who is a whisker away. Anderton and Nelsoncould make the Pac-lO finals in the half this year withOldfield a sure bet in the 1,500.

The longer distances may be a problem, however. Theloss of Rysdam and Warner for the year leaves theburden on Karl Van Calcar in the steeplechase and hewas the top prep in the nation in the event last year. JohnFrank is the only proven returner in the 5,000 and 10,000meters, though Sievers has hopes that junior JaryKrauser will come on.

A surprise may come in the form of sophomoreredshirt Shawn Gallagher, who has already run 3:46 inthe 1,500 this year. John Warriner has shown spark inthe middle distances and Van Calcar will back up Frankin the 5,000 and Oldfield in the 1,500 as a break fromsteeplechasing.

OREGON STATEWomen's Track Preview

The task of building the Oregon State women's trackteam to full strength is a tough one, but there is a lightvisible at the end of the tunnel as the Beavers approachthe 1984 season.

Last year was not a good season for OSU as a team, despite some good individual performances. TheBeavers distance running corps was virtually decimatedand with it went any chance for team accomplishments.

It may be different in 1984. The lone distance standoutof last year, Karen Mathison, returns for her juniorcampaign and she should have a little help this season.Math ison had a best of 4:34 in the 1,500 meters last yearand has already neared that with a 4:59 indoor mile time.

She will be joined by a pair of freshmen who led OSUto a successful cross country season. Peggy Murri ofSouth Salem High School has a prep best of 2:15 in thehalf, but may be better suited to the 1,500. Sue Martineauof North Eugene High should also help in the 1,500 and3,000, but OSU distance coach Gary Sievers said herbest race may be the 5,000 meters.

Add a more seasoned Lisa Mullin in the 800, andKathy Knowlton in the 10,000 and the Beavers won't bepushovers in the distances. By next year, and maybe bythe end of this season, the distance events could turninto a strength for OSU.

The sprints may also be promising, though the depthis lacking. Senior Colleen Gibson s back and has 12.1speed in the 100. She should run both relays at varioustimes during the year as well as the 200, but her primarytask will be the long jump. Gibson has a best of 20-4 andwent to nationals a year ago.

Freshman Lisa Curry, from San Francisco's MissionHigh, should be the top OSU sprinter if she can stayhealthy. Curry has sub-12 speed in the 100.

"She should break the school record in the 100 thisyear," reasoned sprint coach Mike Chriss, "and shecould break the 200 if she works at it." Both marks areheld by Asa Pennington, who graduated last year.

The 400 meters lacks depth, but Marcia Mast willscore points for the Beavers. Thejunior from Milwaukeehas a best of 58.8 and should be down around 58-flat thisyear, but the only backup is unproven freshman ArletaReese from Echo.

The relays could be decent, but it is unlikely theBeavers could round up enough bodies to have two toplineups in the same meet. More than likely, they willstack their top people in one event. Gibson and Curry

will stand out on the short relay with help from seniorJulie Whitton (12.2) and heptathlete Kari Weston. Themile relay could be more of a problem, but Mast,Weston, Meredith Howell and even Gibson are possi-bilities.

Weston is the Beavers' only pure hurdler and willdouble in the highs and intermediates, while Howell andsenior Carina Westover wilt add points in the highs.

Westover, however, shou'd be a blue chipper in thehigh jump. She has already cleared 6-0 this winter and isjust the third Beaver to top that plateau ever. The OSUcoaches feel she s capable of going much higher, ifconditions are right.

Gibson, at 20-4 is a blue chipper in the long jump andwill hopefully surpass that mark. Mast and Howell havelong jumped before and could add some depth. ButHowell's event is the heptathion and Chriss feels shemay come into her own in 1984.

"Meredith is a real dark horse in the heptathion," hesaid. "She has a PR of 4,796 last year, but she has madesuch a dramatic improvement, If you add up all thepersonal bests she has made just this year, she'd be over5,000. I think she can qualify for nationals this year andthat would take a 5,340 total."

The throwing events will consist of Kam Johnson. Thehard-working junior from Astoria threw 49-5 in the shota year ago, and 152-6 in the discus and should be readyto meet national qualifying standards in 1984.

Depth is the biggest problem for the Beavers, but OSUcoach Chuck McNeil can take advantage of the Beavers'multi-talented athletes by stacking certain events.Gibson, for example, can run anything from the 100 to400 and either relay as well as long jump; Westover canhurdle as well as high jump; and heptathiete Howell canfill in anyplace. Her shot put ability may be a realsurprise this year.

NOTES: Though Oregon State is improved on the track, the Beavers best hopes for sending people to nationalsare in the field events. Westover has already qualified inthe high jump; Gibson is a strong possibility in the longjump; and Johnson could go in the shot put, maybe thediscus. Howell is another bet at the heptathlon.

The Beavers could be improved in the sprints if Currycomes through, but could be in trouble if she doesn't.The distances will be vastly improved over last year, butmay still be a season away.
