Edward Poeson planned to be there every step of the way for Megan’s first outing with his family. She and Allain didn’t have code names like him and Trinity yet, but they were still ‘in’.

They met up at the local governmental sciencef acility. Megan and Allain were to do reconnaissance for a heist the next evening.

The Poet and the Balanced Stone waited at a nearby café for their teenage spies to finish. Even Trinity didn’t know what Edward wanted at the facility, only that it was a computer file rather than their usual gold, gems or artefacts.

Megan came along for the incursion as well. The security key she had lifted from a guard the day before got them into the top-secret basement area, and Edwards knowledge of the blueprints of the building got them through the maze of corridors.

As the newbie, Megan was sent to watch the stairs at the entrance to the basement complex. Edward was not expecting company, so it would keep her out of trouble and test her loyalty.

Allain was in the rear guard, watching the corridor while Edward and Trinity were busy in the room they had targeted.

Edward explored the lab for anything extra of value while Trinity recovered the computer file. The file name gave her no clues as to its contents, and Edward left her none the wiser.

Trinity went straight home to get back to her sister, but Megan was invited to the post-heist meal. They unwound together, discussing what they had achieved and how Allain and she could improve.

While Allain did the washing up Edward talked for a long time with Megan one-to-one. He wanted to assess how much guilt she was feeling, whether he was rushing her progress… he found she was exactly as he hoped. She was proud and excited with what she had helped do but was feeling twinges of guilt and fear. He explained how this was normal and would pass, that he would have been concerned if she was totally okay with becoming a criminal – that would be a sign of an unhealthy mind. He was proud of her.

He invited her to stay over, but she decided she was too tired and would be better off in her own bed. Sneaking back after curfew and avoiding the cops was something Edward had trained her in, so he allowed her to leave.

He wasn’t sure what possessed him to give her a hug goodbye, let alone a chaste kiss on the top of her head. Perhaps it was that he missed Trinity’s presence, or that he was particularly proud of Megan. She didn’t seem perturbed so he decided not to let it worry him.

Back in Deasil Street Jen was having a late night too, and she was worried. Going over her paperwork in the run-up to her wedding to Angus had revealed a terrible truth. A short letter she hadn’t read during the period following her separation from her ex-husband. Pablo hadn’t signed one final legal document. She was still married to him.

Page 12: 8.32

Angus wasn’t angry as she had feared. He knew how stressful moving house was, all she’d missed was one letter. She just had to track down Pablo and get him to sign the document finalising their divorce.

Jen had no idea where her ex was, but she knew a friend of his who still lived in Appaloosa. She’d start with him.
