he commented that the machine ran like a top, high praise coming from one of NASCAR’S most notable Hall of Fame recipients.

But the main reason the personable Wallace was smiling was because he gen-uinely enjoys meeting fellow riders and being a part of contributing to charitable organizations.

The recipients for the ride were twofold. The NASCAR Foundation and South Dakota Special Olympics–Rapid City Flame will benefit from the $40,833 raised by the generous riders who spent the day with the Winston Cup Champion.

Wallace, a 55-time race winner is con-sidered one of America’s greatest race car drives of all time, and one of the top five NASCAR money winners — and it seems his ability to raise funds for oth-ers is just as successful. Go to the Buf-falo Chip website, buffalochip.com, to see about signing up for the 2020 Rusty Wallace Ride for charity. You’ll be glad you did.

The Buffalo Chip’s ubiquitous Rod “Woody” Wood-ruff loves to meet campers. He turns up everywhere at the Chip, so keep your eyes peeled for his smiling face and say hello. Also look for Woody in the pages of the Sturgis Rider Daily to win Chip merch. Each day there’s a differ-ent Woody caricature hidden in a photo of an event or loca-tion he especially recommends. The first three readers who report their find to the Chamber of Commerce/Rally Info Center at the Chip CrossRoads win a prize bag. And don’t forget to notice where Woody is hiding out, because that’s definitely the place to be each day.

NOTE: The 2020 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally dates have changed

As you make your 2020 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally plans, keep in mind that the customary dates

have changed. In 2016 or early 2017 an ordinance that determines when the City of Sturgis recognizes the begin-ning date of the motorcycle rally was changed.  Internet and other publications were not changed and many proceeded with plans based upon the date the motor-cycle rally would have commenced under the decades-old formula.

The City’s website now shows the desired commencement date of the 2020 motorcycle rally in the City of Sturgis to be Friday, August 7, 2020.  This change from the date that had universally been

announced is, unfortunately, causing con-fusion within the motorcycle industry and its consumer base, as well as for camp-grounds, hotels, motels and individuals who’ve rented their homes for the tradi-tional rally dates instead of the new dates.

The Sturgis Buffalo Chip will be host-ing motorcycle and other Sturgis Motor-cycle Rally tourists throughout the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally of 2020, as always.  The Sturgis Buffalo Chip’s Motorcycle and Music Festival will again feature perfor-mances by nationally prominent enter-tainers on Friday, August 7, 2020, and the days following, so come on out and party with us! It’s not too early to get your tickets for 2020 now; go to buffalochip.com/reservations. We’re looking forward to seeing you!

Ellie Raines

Ellie Rains has been riding since the late 1970s and, finding that there was not a lot of support for female bikers, founded the Midwest Women Rid-er’s group. She finds herself driven by the women she’s met along the way, and how they each sup-port one another as women, but more impor-tantly, as women bikers. There’s a sense of cama-raderie within the Midwest Women Riders, and Ellie has worked hard to create a space for women bikers to learn, grow, and prosper as she herself continues to do the thing she loves the most.

SRD: How long have you been riding?Ellie: Seriously riding? Since 2008, but before

that I started in the late ‘70s. I rode a dirt bike and some crotch rockets, and eventually my husband’s

A Word from Assistant Editor Madeline Woodruff

This year, I was inspired to seek out and inter-view several incredible women bikers who’ve been out on the long and winding roads worldwide, kicking up dust on the racetracks, making history, and making a name for female bikers wherever they go. I wanted to celebrate them, these fear-less women, and what they bring to the epics of motorcycling. I wasn’t disappointed. I’m forever inspired by these ladies on two wheels, and I’m excited to present this year’s Sturgis Rider Daily special, Inspiring Women Riders!

Facebook photo

Facebook photo

Harley. Then I got my own Harley and I started riding long distance.

SRD: Do you have a favorite ride you’ve ridden?

Ellie: I’d have to say the one that stuck in my mind was when I accomplished an Iron Butt. All the way to Denver, Colo-rado. We tried to attempt it but time got away from us and we got caught up in some strong wings in Kansas. When we did the return trip I wanted to complete it, so we got in over a thousand miles in 24 hours.

SRD: There’s a lot of inspiration behind your choice to found the Mid-west Women Riders, can you tell us more about that?

Ellie: I started the Midwest Women Riders because when I started seriously riding I noticed that there were a lot of ladies in my community that needed sup-port and community to really connect. Just for us to have that connection and be able to discuss our hopes and dreams and destinations, which was something I really wanted to do.

There’s a lot of people out there these days, unlike years ago when most of us had to go through all of this alone. It’s a unity thing too, where we welcome all dif-ferent bikes and gear. We don’t discrimi-nate, all we ask if you have a strong desire to ride or are already a rider. It’s amazing to me the amount of women out there that want to ride.

SRD: What does it mean for you per-sonally to be a positive female biker role model?

Ellie: It means everything to me. I didn’t realize how much of an impact I have on other women who ride. I’ve been doing this a long time, and it’s just been something that I really want to do. I was never looking to become an inspiration, so I just have to say thank you to everyone that sees me that way.

This community wouldn’t be what it is without my girls. I can’t take full credit because the way my ladies handle them-selves in this group really makes it what it is. For all of us, it’s a passion thing. You can’t go wrong if you’re following your passion.

With an invitation to all choppers to come strut their stuff, the Rat’s

Hole Show literally took over the place Thursday as radical riders took to the tarmac at the CrossRoads. With more than 65 bikes battling for 70 awards, the joint was jumping. In the middle of the bike show was a Rat’s Hole tattoo contest, too. The big news was the iconic show’s new-est trophy, the Rat’s Hole Superbowl trophy ring created by legendary art-ist, Frankie Rodriquez. Rodriquez also served as a celebrity judge for the show, which made the first place awards all the more unique. Win-ners gathered later for a group photo and to show off their badass rings! The Motorcycles As Art show, curated annu-

ally by Michael Lichter and exhibited in the Buf-falo Chip Event Center, is much more than just a bike show. It also serves as a sort of cultural barom-eter for the direction of custom bike building and the show is a gathering place for industry person-alities each August.

Michael assigns a par-ticular theme to the show and invites builders to set their imagination free to create a machine that fits within the framework of the exhibit’s structure. In addition to the builders, motorcycle-esque works from various artists occupies wall space and the one-week gallery is free to the public dur-ing Rally.

This year, Michael included bikes that were built by two very loved and respected

builders who passed on ear-lier in 2019, and whose loss has left a very big hole in the hearts of all whose lives they touched.

Arlen Ness, known to the world as the Godfather of Choppers, passed away in the spring, shortly before young Jesse Rooke died in a bike accident. Both these beloved men have their spe-cial motorcycles displayed on pedestals along side the other bike builders and you are welcome to view Arlen’s 1978 “Nesstique.” Built around a

900cc Sportster, Arlen called the low and lean machine a digger style.

Jesse’s bike, the Rooke Customs Cali-cruiser, came out from Arizona to be dis-played in silent reminder to live life to the fullest in appreciation. Jesse was known for his crazy ideas and radical customs and you will appreciate the art involved in his unique machine.

If you’re a woman who’s wanted to take a gun class or learn more about shooting, here’s a great opportunity. Babes with Bullets, a U.S. traveling firearms academy

offering handgun and rifle training to women at all lev-els taught by an all-female team of national and world shooting sports champions, offers three-day gun camps designed to teach women to safely and confidently han-dle and operate a firearm in an informal “camp” atmo-sphere.

The recent camp held at the Buffalo Chip Range ended just before 2019 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, but they will be back for 2020.

This might be a great time to come out early for hand-gun camp then roll on over to the Chip campground for the 2020 Sturgis Rally!

Here’s the link so give them a call and learn more about gun camp, then be sure to get your Buffalo Chip passes because you don’t want to miss the 80th Sturgis Rally celebration! Check it out here: babeswithbullets.com/registerforcamps/.

Geez — here it is again, time for the Rally to end and for you to leave us for your other Home. We’ve once again not had enough time to spend with each of you but we are so appreciative of the time we have had together. You really do make the largest and friendliest group of bikers anywhere, and you’ve continually warmed my heart this year with your kind compliments. I’ve heard each of the following more than once and some many times this year.

“This is my first year and I’m having so much fun I’ll be back every year.”“Your staff is so friendly.” “Thank you for putting this on.”“All part of the great service we’ve had here the entire time.”“Thank you for letting me come and be a part of this.”“People, you know this doesn’t happen anywhere else in the world.” — Tommy Shaw (Styx)“Don’t change a thing. I’ve already made my reservations for next year.”“This gig was a risk for us. It was f**king awesome and we’ll come back any time you want

us.” — Snoop Dogg. The crew and I believe this to have been the most positive and joyous event we’ve ever had.

We thank you. Throughout the coming year we hope that you will RIDE FREE, TAKE RISKS and bring

those happy faces back Home next August for the Buffalo Chip’s 39th annual Music and Motorcycle Festival and the 80th anniversary of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
