The Rise of City-StatesWhat is a city-state?
A city with its own traditions, government, and laws.
This is both a city and its own separate and independent state (country.)
The two most important Greek city-states were Athens and Sparta.
So why Ancient Greece, and not just separate countries such as Ancient Athens or Ancient Sparta?The Greek city-states had a common language (Greek)They also shared common customs and beliefs.They were only physically separated from each other.

Meet the SpartansSparta was first ruled by a king, and later by aristocrats.
Spartan aristocrats were a wealthy council of elders.
Valued strength, babies were inspected at birth. If they were not healthy they would be left to die.
Spartan boys at age 7 were forced into the military; they would be encouraged to steal to survive. They would remain living at the barracks.
Spartan women had more rights than most women, were expected to be healthy and give birth to strong warriors.
Sparta had one focus, war.

AthensAthens is the birth place of
democracy.Citizens are able to vote for laws
and leaders in a democracy.
Education was a requirement for all males.
All males were citizens at age 20.
Athens focused on the arts, trade, and education
This led Athens to eventually became the most powerful Greek city-state.
