Globalization is Here! Tom Friedman, The World is Flat:

a flattening of global business driven by existing and future technologies that enable enterprises to become increasingly collaborative

Information economy is different: Bits vs. Bricks: intellectual capital

vs. physical capital Knowledge is a key player:

(Knowledge Management) Consumer-driven mobile device

innovation and adoption New models for competitive

advantage: Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC)

Virtual Learning Virtual worker (students, faculty, staff)

Dislocated from peers/administrators Non-traditional “classroom”

Changing enterprises (universities) Expanding learning with virtual technologies globally Asynchronous Learning Networks (ALN) Synchronous Learning Networks (SLN) Individuals do more tacit work (judgment &

collaboration) Social networking (Twitter, Blogs, You Tube)

Changing technologies Short innovation & adoption cycles Consumer-based mobile technologies

Virtual Learning Management

Four Major Challenges Cross-cultural and language differences Balance between “individualism” and “one size fits all” Isolation from peers and colleagues Inadequate coordination

Virtual learning should reflect business strategy

Institutional vision and mission Institutional financial impact (Return on Investment) Student financial impact (tuition fees)

Managing Virtual Teams Proactive leadership, project management, personal

attention, clear objectives and language, frequent communication, context setting, constructive discourse

Virtual Learning Management

Team members (students, faculty, staff) from different institutions

Adopting standards and agreeing on similar processes Team members (students, faculty, staff)

from different countries and cultures More task communication, initial “face-to-face”

meetings, facilitated & documented meetings, time zone awareness, communication tracking

Team members who speak different languages

Pre-project training & practice, translation, comprehensive written communication, time to interpret context

Institutional Readiness Cartoon: how not to use a communication

tool. E-mail is not to be used to pass on information or data to everyone. Other virtual tools are more appropriate.
