Who were the Vikings?
● not a specific “race” of people
● a Viking was a Scandinavian who partook in overseas exploration○ Scandinavia = Northern
Europe
Viking Name
The name Viking came from the Old Norse word "vik" (bay or creek) which formed the root of "vikingr" (pirate)
Not this kind of pirate. More or less just an
explorer!
How were they distinct from other Europeans?
● came from a foreign land
● not “civilized”● not Christian

Viking Culture

most of the time farming3. further developed the sport

Reason for Exploration
● still uncertain but historians have speculated overpopulation to be one cause
● earliest Vikings looking for resources, not land○ how is this different from what we have seen before?
