DEXTER - Over 40 local own-ers of dull knives, scissors, hoes, scythes, drill bits and other hand tools converged in the Ab-bott Memorial Library’s base-ment Saturday morning to share knowledge, experience, theory and techniques for sharpening. This workshop, co-sponsored by Dexter Dover Area Towns in Transition (DDATT) and the Library, was an experiment in skills-sharing, drawing people from as far away as Skowhegan and Bangor.

Most participants came with questions about how to begin get-ting their tools back into sharp condition. In the spirit of shar-ing, a few of the more-knowledge-able honers set up their tools on tables placed around the base-ment, allowing seekers ample opportunity to see different ap-proaches to the same end: how to put an edge onto a cutting device.

Sandpaper on glass, water stones, oil stones, handpowered grinding wheel, fi les of all kinds, honing strops, and peening jigs were among the items demon-strated to and then used by the curious and hopeful. One of the common admissions was a fear of making a dull implement worse by not knowing how to use a sharpening tool correctly. The antidote for this fear, explained the experienced in their various ways, has three parts: fi rst, to understand what “sharp” means for any particular tool, that is, what does a sharp edge look like; second, which sharpening tool can do the proper job; third (and most important), the courage to jump in and keep trying.

Sharing essential community

“Being sharp”is popular in

DDATT towns

She was born Febru-ary 20, 1952 in East Corinth, a daughter of Raymond and Lor-raine (Lambert) Elliott. Sharon graduated from Central High School, Class of 1970 as valedic-torian of her class. She worked for Metropolitan Life in Bangor and transferred to Waterville where she became offi ce man-ager. When the Waterville offi ce closed she was asked to return to Bangor. After 25 years of service she took early retirement in or-der to care for her mother. After her mother passed she worked as bookkeeper for the Town of St. Albans. Sharon married Earle Osborne Weeks on May 5th, 1973. They had a wonderful life together for 41 years. They espe-cially enjoyed retirement cruis-ing to Hawaii, Alaska, the Pan-ama Canal and many locales in the Caribbean. They wintered in Florida and traveled across the United States twice. These are cherished memories. One of her greatest joys was spending time with her children and grandchil-

dren. She was a loving mother and grandmother. Wonderful times were shared playing ten-nis, biking, hiking, camping and ice skating. She enjoyed playing cards with her friends and family. She spent much of her free time walking miles through the woods with her golden retrievers seek-ing out new adventures. Sharon was baptized into the Methodist church at age 9 and was always a faithful servant. She was a strong Christian woman who led her family by example. She will be remembered as a kind, caring person with a big smile for every-one no matter what struggles she faced in life. She was a member of Grace-Linn United Methodist Church in Hartland, the United Methodist Women, a member of the Hartland-St. Albans Lions Club, and was a past member of the Oakland Sunshine Club. In addition to her husband, she is survived by 2 daughters, An-gie Weeks-Knapp of Harmony, Tammy Christianson of Sidney, and a son in law she considered to be her son, Nathan Christian-son; 2 brothers Philip Elliott and wife Annabel of Cape Coral, Florida, Richard Elliott and wife

Patricia of Decatur, Alabama; 4 grandchildren, Barrett, Abigail, Joshua, and Joseph; and 2 aunts, Eva and Norma; and many cous-ins, nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held January 20th, at Grace-Linn United Methodist Church, 8 Seekins Street, Hart-land with Pastor Jim Boughman offi ciating. Spring burial will be in the Crocker Cemetery, St. Al-bans. In lieu of fl owers, memorial donations may be made to the Aliza Jean Family Cancer Foun-dation, P.O. Box 124, Harmony, ME 04942. Those who wish may leave written condolences at www.CrosbyNeal.com Arrange-ments are by Crosby & Neal, Newport.

DDATT is grateful for volunteers Tom Goldsmith of Dexter, Robert Elliot of Dover Foxcroft, Norris Davis from Har-mony, Stephanie Reiser from St Albans, Gerry Amelotte of Troy, and Richard Tessier of Skow-hegan who energetically and thoughtfully demonstrated tech-niques and lifetimes of hand tool experience with the group.

“I am so pleased with this event!” said Librarian Liz Breault, “We had no idea there would be so much interest, es-pecially in the middle of winter.” Dexter’s Pam Crooker, attend-ing a DDATT workshop for the fi rst time and “learning a lot,” expressed hope for more such events.

Businesses under new ownershipDOVER-FOXCROFT - AMB Signs, Foxcroft

Printers and Foxcroft Laundromat have a new owner. The new owner is Daniel Moore of Do-ver-Foxcroft. He purchased the 3 businesses from previous owners, Carl & Vicki Brackett. The businesses are located across the street from Will’s Shop & Save at 25 North Street.

Dan was born and raised in Dover-Foxcroft and is a graduate of Foxcroft Academy. After high school, Dan spent 8 years in the military, and has since been working as a Consultant for the Government.

The 3 businesses will operate as they have in the past without interruption. Quiltingmania will continue to be operated by the Bracketts at its current location, 25 North Street, Con-tact them at 564-3533 or [email protected]. The Bracketts will be around for the next few months for training and a smooth transition from one owner to the next. Pam Walton will be staying as well.

AMB Signs is a full-service sign business offering; car & truck lettering, business signs, window lettering, carved signs, gold leaf signs, plaques, individual vinyl lettering and more. Foxcroft Printers offers; photocopying, both black and white and color, fl yers, brochures, business cards, two & three part NCR busi-ness invoices, design work and more. Foxcroft Laundry is a clean, bright, well-kept self-ser-vice laundromat.

Dan invites everyone to stop in to see what he offers and would like to thank everyone for their future support.

Carl and Vicki would also like to thank the community for their past support. Because of the support they received, these businesses have succeeded. THREE DOVER-FOXCROFT BUSINESSES were recently purchased by Daniel Moore (left) from Vicki and Carl Brackett.
