DOVER-FOXCROFT - The Center Theatre and Slightly Off Center Players present a special Holiday Play double feature, with A Seussifi ed Christmas Carol and The Velveteen Rabbit, playing December 12-20. These performances are proudly sponsored by A.E. Robinson, Steinke & Caruso Dental Care, and McKusick Petroleum.
A Seussifi ed Christmas Carol is a whimsical take on the Dickens classic with a Dr. Seuss fl air. The all youth cast will take you through Mr. Scrooge’s past, present and future in a fun and upbeat one act musi-cal. Narrated by Thing 1 and Thing 2, the rhyming will not skip a beat. It will entertain children and their parents too, and have you dancing in your seat
The Velveteen Rabbit will follow after an intermission. Having premiered at the New York Children’s Theatre Festival in 2012, this production of The Velveteen Rabbit has a twist all its own: puppets. Before rehearsals even started, the actors went through training with professional puppeteer and adaptor of the story Andy Frodohl to bring this play to life.
A Seussifi ed Christmas Carol and The Velveteen Rabbit will run December 12, 13, 14, and December 19 and 20. Tickets are $15 General Admission, and $12 for Theatre members, Seniors and Students, as well as tickets purchased in advance.
For more information about the auditions or performances, please email [email protected], call the Center Theatre at 564-8943 or stop by the Theatre at 20 East Main Street, Dover-Foxcroft between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. To purchase tickets or to learn more about upcoming events at Center Theatre, please call the box offi ce at 564-8943 or visit the theatre’s website at www.centertheatre.org.

GUILFORD - Piscataquis Community Elementary students from kindergarten through grade six will raise their voices and instruments for parents and friends at their annual winter concert on Wednesday, December 10 at 5:30 p.m. in the Piscataquis Community Secondary School Gymnasium. Under the direc-tion of music teacher Michelle Briggs and physical education teacher Sheryl Allen, the program involves over 300 students and serves up a wide diversity of talent and entertainment.
“We pack a lot of talent into a one hour show,” notes Briggs. “The kids work hard, but we also have fun. The kids really enjoy performing for the community.” Briggs also hinted that there will be a special closing to this year’s show in the form of a specially choreographed piece featuring fourth graders. Students and attendees are encouraged to wear “fun festive accessories such as ties, hats and hair pieces” to contribute to the spirit of celebration.
One local resident who rarely misses a concert points out, “These are the kinds of events that put the ‘community’ in Piscataquis Community Elementary School. They are today’s version of a ‘Norman Rockwell Moment’ – a picture perfect evening of friends and neighbors gathering together for simple and traditional pleasure.”
The snow date for the concert is Monday, December 15. Updates and additional information will be available on the M.S.A.D. 4 website (http://www.sad4.org) and Facebook Page. There will be an audio live stream available on the district website for those who cannot attend.

County has chosen one specifi c day to make this season a prior-ity, giving families and visitors an opportunity to enjoy all the won-der and joy it has to offer.
This year, the schedules sub-mitted for Dec. 6 activities in-cluded the towns of Monson, Milo, Guilford, and Dover Foxcroft. The Greenville area will hold holiday activities on Nov. 29.
In Monson, from 8 - 9 a.m., folks who participated are asked to drop off their Christmas tree creations in front of the Mon-son Gym as part of the “Christ-mas Tree Challenge”. The trees in this challenge must be made from recyclable/reusable materi-als to construct a 5 - 6 foot tree. The trees will remain on display until 3 p.m. The public can vote for their favorite tree for a $1 donation. All funds will be used to purchase winter clothing for local children in need. The 30th Annual Kris Kringle Fair kicks off at 9 a.m. at the Monson Gym, with crafters selling jewelry, fabric items, folk art, wreathes, wooden items, ornaments, home-made food, and more. Entries for the Gingerbread House contest must be at the gym by 10 a.m. Ribbons will be awarded to the top creative and well-crafted en-tries. “Christmas in Monson” is this year’s theme. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Kris Kringle Raffl e tickets will be sold throughout the day, with prizes awarded hourly. Santa arrives in Monson at 1 p.m.! All activities are being held at the Monson Gym.
This year, in Milo, Santa’s com-ing for breakfast ($4) at 8 a.m. in the PVHS Cafeteria, and is plan-ning to stay until 10 a.m. Coun-try Blessings is holding an open house with a store-wide holiday sale, door prizes, music, and re-freshments from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. From 9 a.m. to Noon the Park St. United Methodist Church will hold a Christmas Fair, with a beef stew luncheon from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Milo town hall dining room will hold crafts and snacks from 4 - 6 p.m. The HTH Parade will begin at 5 p.m., with the tree lighting and caroling at the Milo Fire Department at 5:15 p.m. At 5:30 p.m., Santa returns to greet children once again in the town hall lobby. Holiday hay-rides will run from the town hall beginning at 5:30 p.m., at which time the winners of the Home & Business lighting contest will be announced. At 7 p.m., there will be a bonfi re and skating (weather permitting) at the Harris Field skating rink on Elm St.
Piscataquis County celebrates Hometown HolidaysThe town of Guilford will be-
gin festivities at 5 p.m., when the Guilford Historical Society will hold a Christmas sale of Guil-ford memorabilia, also offering free hot chocolate and sweets! At 6 p.m., Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive, and Guilford families are asked to come to help Santa count down to the tree lighting in the Braeburn lot. The PCSS Cho-rus, staff, and friends will be car-oling by the bonfi re in the Edes lot after the tree lighting to end the night.
Dover Foxcroft festivities be-gin at 8 a.m. with a Kris Krin-gle Coffee at the Congregational Church. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Bob’s Sugarhouse is holding a Christmas Open House & Bob’s birthday party, with music, free samples, door prizes, discounts, and a birthday cake! Beginning at noon, Pat’s Pizza is holding a Holiday Bazaar in the Spaulding Room until 7 p.m. There will be eight vendors present, including Origami Owl, Mary Kay, Scentsy, Jamberry Nails, Tastefully Simple, Longa-berger Basket, Pampered Chef and Thirty-One; this is a great place to do some Christmas shop-ping! The 2nd Annual Imagine Tour will be held in conjunction with HomeTown Holidays in Do-ver again this year, giving the community and potential busi-ness tenants the ability to “imag-ine” what it would be like to be in the available spaces down-town. The Imagine Tour will run through Union Square Mall with current tenants participating, and the Dover Foxcroft Mill, run-ning from 12-4 p.m.. Beginning at 1 p.m., Johnston Christmas Trees of Parkman will be sell-
ing trees near the fi re station. At Center Theatre, children can compose a letter to Santa with the help of Santa’s Elves from 1 - 2 p.m. All letters written to Santa receive a response! After the letter-writing, at 2 p.m., there will be a story time which includes a puppet show, followed by “A Muppet Christmas Carol” from 3 - 4:30 p.m. Beginning at 4 p.m., enjoy some holiday treats at the Modern Image Salon while you wait your turn for horse-drawn carriage rides on Lincoln St., running until 6 p.m.. Visit the Polar Express at the railroad club across from Center Theatre from 3 - 5 p.m. From 4:30 p.m. on, the Derespino sisters will be singing Christmas tunes at the fi re station, while awaiting San-ta’s arrival and during his visits with the children. The Festival of Lights Parade will begin at 5 p.m. at Foxcroft Academy and end at the fi re station with Santa and Mrs. Claus exiting the fi re truck in time for a count-down to the tree lighting. Inside the fi re sta-tion, the Foxcroft Academy Band will have food and desserts for sale to benefi t their trip to march in the Disney parade. There will also be activities and items for sale inside the fi re station while Santa & Mrs. Claus greet the children.
This year, the choirs of several local churches are coming togeth-er for a Community Christmas Concert at Foxcroft Academy; beginning at 7 p.m. Entrance is by donation, benefi ting the Pisca-taquis Santa Project. Each choir will sing two pieces, followed by two combined pieces with all choirs, ending the evening with choirs AND the audience stand-

To The Editor:I am honored to represent the citizens of House District #119 in the upcoming 127th session of The

It is my intent to keep constituents updated with occasional informational letters in this publication. I will also be distributing newsletters to anyone that wishes to subscribe. If you wish to receive these newsletters and are currently on Pete’s mailing list you need do nothing. If you are not currently on a mailing list, and wish to be, simply e-mail me at [email protected] and indicate whether you prefer electronic delivery, hard copy, or both.

“…coyotes don’t care how the deer is suffering…”To the Editor:There is something wrong with the way some people think. For example, some worry more about how
animals are hunted and killed by man. They should look at what happens when a coyote kills a deer. The coyotes don’t care how the deer is suffering: they just think about eating.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and the Humane Society of the United States have so much time and money, they should look at how they can help fi nd a way to stop domestic violence and the countless women and children being sexually assaulted each year. They have to live with this for the rest of their lives.

by Tim ObreyMAINE - “The fi shing law book
is way too simple” said no one…ever. The lawbook can seem con-voluted and unnecessarily com-plicated to some and we continue to strive to simplify where we can. Regulations are meant to protect the resource and provide for a diversity of fi shing opportu-nities. In recent years, we have consolidated regulations into a few options for each species with the occasional special outlier. The extension of the fi shing sea-son into the fall months on our stocked and warmwater game-fi sh waters has added to the level of complexity as we try to balance expanding fi shing oppor-tunities, maintaining the fi shery, and keeping the lawbook simple and standardized.
Without a doubt, the most fre-quent complaints we get at the Greenville Offi ce regarding a spe-cifi c regulation are for the Moose River in Rockwood. The Moose River contains spawning and nursery habitat for wild salmon and brook trout that eventually
drop downstream into Mooseh-ead Lake. This section of river is very important for maintaining the wild gamefi sh in the State’s largest lake. Rivers like this need to be protected in a manner that reduces hooking mortality on the young fi sh. We typically recom-mend artifi cial lures only or fl y fi shing only in these cases. Adult fi sh are concentrated in these narrow, shallow rivers during the spring smelt run and in the fall as they begin their spawning mi-gration, so they must be afforded additional protection, especially in the fall. This is why regula-tions in rivers and streams typi-cally get more restrictive in Au-gust or September.
The section of the Moose River immediately below the Bras-sua Dam downstream to the red posts near what used to be Woody’s Campground includes a unique regulation. Fishing gear in this section is restricted to “casting and trolling with ar-tifi cial fl ies only” from April 1 to August 15th. There is a big dif-ference between this regulation
and fl y fi shing only. On waters restricted to fl y fi shing only, an angler must cast and retrieve us-ing the weight of the line to pro-pel the fl y. Therefore, trolling is not allowed and gear is restricted to the traditional fl y rod and fl y, otherwise it just doesn’t work. Fly fi shermen know that the heavier the fl y, the more diffi cult to cast. So, while they can use weighted fl ies, typically the fl ies are still made of the normal materials or else anglers simply cannot cast. However, by allowing trolling and casting of artifi cial fl ies only, anglers can use spinning rods and the weight of the fl y is no longer an issue because anglers are not casting with fl y rods. We frequently get complaints from anglers that some fi shermen are “stretching” the defi nition of a fl y and really using gear that you and I would commonly call a lure. We hear about anglers using spin rods to cast heavy, lead-head jigs with hair/feathers attached. While this was not the intent of the law, it has become diffi cult to

Grange Events for December
NOVEMBER TERRIFIC KIDS - The Terrifi c Kids awards ceremony for November was held recently at Ridge View Community School in Dexter. The 10 students were honored for attaining their goals by Paula McHugh, the principal. They received a certifi cate and tokens from the Dexter Kiwanians. This incentive program for 3rd graders is successful because of the cooperation of all involved. The students are, front, left to right: Brianna Packard, Keon Rice, Miles Grant, Holdyn Guenther, Shelby Dyson and Aiden Langlais. Back, left to right: Garrett Tib-betts, Elizabeth Bernard-Whittaker, Hannah Dean, and Keegan Hight.
enforce. These anglers are very successful because they are able to get down in the deeper pools, especially below the turbine dis-charge where there is heavy cur-rent that would normally push a fl y to the surface. These anglers are probably hooking and catch-
ing fi sh at a higher rate than an-glers abiding by the intent of the current law.
Is there a solution? Is there a way to simplify the lawbook and make the rule enforceable while meeting the objective of protect-ing the coldwater fi shery? Yes, the simplest solution is to make the section of the Moose River
from Brassua to the campground fl y fi shing only during the entire open water season. The current regulation on the Moose River does change to fl y fi shing only from August 16th to September 30th. This would be similar to the East Outlet and the Roach River which are the two other major spawning and nursery
tributaries for wild salmon and brook trout on Moosehead Lake. The section of the Moose River from the campground to the lake, where the majority of the boat traffi c and trolling occurs, would not change and still allow trolling through August 15th.
