Covenants we make at baptism
A covenant is a two-way promise. We make promises to our Heavenly Father, and our
Heavenly Father makes promises to us.
We make promises at baptism:
1. We promise to take upon us the name ofJesus Christ.
This means that we will become followers of
Jesus and will become known as Christians.
2. We will always think of Jesus throughoutour lives.
When we have a decision to make, we will remember Jesus, and think of what he would
want us to do.
3. We promise to serve Jesus by keeping his commandments and following histeachings throughout our lives.
This means we will learn what is right and strive to live the example he has set for us.
Our Heavenly Father promises us at baptism:
1. He promises to forgive us of our sinsThrough repentance, when we make mistakes we are able to pray to our Heavenly Father
and right our wrongs. He promises that he will remember our sins no more.
2. He will always have His Spirit to be with us.By receiving our confirmation, we are given the gift of the Holy Ghost to be our constant
companion. The Holy Ghost is there to help us make good choices and to feel comfort
and love.
3. He promises us that we can return and live with Him again. When we keep our promises made at baptism, our Heavenly Father promises that we can
return and live with Him forever.

Taking the sacrament renews our baptismal
covenants
When we partake of the sacrament we renew our baptismal covenants, or our promises
we made with our Heavenly Father.
Think about the sacrament prayers and the words that are said. This is why taking the
sacrament is so important.
Sacrament Prayers
Doctrine and Covenants 20:77
Oh God, the Eternal Father, we ask thee in the name of thy Son, Jesus Christ, to bless and
sanctify this bread to the souls of all those who partake of it, that they may eat in
remembrance of the body of the Son, and witness unto thee, O God, the Eternal Father,
that they are willing to take upon them the name of thy Son, and always remember him
and keep his commandments which he has given them; that they may always have his
Spirit to be with them. Amen.
Doctrine and Covenants 20:79
Oh God, the Eternal Father, we ask thee in the name of thy Son, Jesus Christ, to bless and
sanctify this water to the souls of all those who drink of it, that they may do it in
remembrance of the blood of the Son, which was shed for them; that they may witness
unto thee, O God, the Eternal Father, that they do always remember him, that they may
have his Spirit to be with them. Amen.

I Will Make and Keep My Baptismal
Covenant
BY CHERYL ESPLIN (Friend May 2009)
Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God
(John 3:5).
I Will Make and Keep My Baptismal Covenant
Baptism is the first ordinance of the gospel. It puts you on the path that leads to eternal
life. By being baptized, you show that you believe in Jesus Christ and have faith in Him.When you are baptized you make a covenant to take upon you the name of Jesus Christ,
to always remember Him, and to obey His commandments.
You must be baptized before you can be confirmed a member of the Church and receive
the gift of the Holy Ghost. You also must be baptized before you can enter the celestial
kingdom and live again with Heavenly Father and Jesus.
Heavenly Father promises that when you are baptized and confirmed, the Holy Ghost willbe with you as long as you live worthy of His promptings. The Holy Ghost testifies of
Jesus Christ and bears witness when you are taught the truth. The Holy Ghost can help
guide you and your family in following Jesus Christ and making good choices.
Activity
On the next page, find your way through the maze that leads to eternal life. When you
come to a scripture reference, look up the scripture and read it. If it talks about something
that leads to eternal life, stay on that path. If it talks about something that would not lead
to eternal life, take the other path.

Questions and Answers about Baptism(from the Friend August 2008)
Do I make a promise when I am baptized?
Yes. You promise to keep Heavenly Fathers commandments. He promises that you can live
with Him in His kingdom. These promises are called covenants.
Where will I be baptized?
Where possible, you will be baptized in a font in a stake center. If you cannot be baptized in a
font, you may be baptized anywhere approved by your bishop or branch president, such as a
pond or ocean. There has to be enough water to cover you completely. Thats what baptism by
immersion means.
Why is baptism important?
Its more than importantit is necessary. Jesus Christ said that people must be baptized to
belong to His Church and enter the kingdom of God (see John 3:5).
Is baptism scary?
No. The person baptizing you holds onto you the whole time. You are under the water for only a
moment.
What do I need to do to prepare to be baptized?
Want to be baptized.
Keep the commandments.
Be willing to live the teachings of Jesus Christ and follow His example.
Be interviewed by your bishop or branch president.
Why arent babies baptized in our Church?
Children are born innocent. Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ give parents eight years to teach
their children the gospel so their children can learn right from wrong before they become
accountable for their sins. (See D&C 68:25.)
Who can baptize me?
-
7/31/2019 8 is GREAT Booklet
8/18
A priest in the Aaronic Priesthood or a man who holds the Melchizedek Priesthood.
When can I be baptized?
You need to be at least eight years old (see D&C 68:27).
What will the person baptizing me say?
Having been commissioned of Jesus Christ, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the
Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen (D&C 20:73).
What happens after baptism?
After you are baptized, you are confirmed a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints and you receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. You are then accountable for your sins, and
you need to repent when you do something wrong. Before you take the sacrament each week, you should repent of whatever you did wrong that week and ask for forgiveness. Then when you
take the sacrament, you covenant to take upon yourself the name of Jesus Christ, which means
you will always try to remember Him, follow His example, and obey Him. When you do this,
you are promised that His Spirit will be with you.
What will I wear when I am baptized?
White clothing usually borrowed from your ward, stake, district, or mission, or you can wear
your own ordinarily white pants and a white shirt for boys and a white dress for girls (make sure
to wear white underwear).
Do the scriptures tell about people who were baptized?
Yes! Here are some you can read about:
Adam: Moses 6:6465
Alma: Mosiah 18:816
Jesus Christ: Matthew 3:1317
3,000 in one day: Acts 2:3841
Paul: Acts 9:1718
Limhi and his people: Mosiah 25:1718
Zeezrom: Alma 15:12
Joseph Smith: JSH 1:6871
