Project Brief: The Village - A Field Study

This booklet is based on a series of questions to members of the public one morning in Sibford Gower and Ferris,Oxfordshire,England.

The interviews were recorded on a portable microphone,so all the data could be collected,with all the background noises included,the interviews started at 8.30 am on the 15th March 2010.

It would have to be green.

So i gather your related to Theodore Lamb?

Yes, well i’m married to a lamb, not a lamb myself, but he was my husbands great grandfather I believe.Well the Lamb’s have been here from like the 1700’s or something, but its probably best if you wanted more information to speak to my inlaws.

Yeah It’s just a little bit Jurassic,the way it just all of a sudden,everything starts to go up and down from the flats coming into here,there’s not many places like it,its hidden away a bit.

CROW CROWING

Ahhhhhh (Sighs)...I dunno...there’s a lot of Quakers round here,so you’ve got more social and moral consciences...but probably,your talking about,yeah, dunno actually,but its a spiritual lot round here,I you know, the state of the nation,the way its going.

Peaceful...well apart from nine O’clock and three O’clock, because of the primary school, but other than that its very quiet.

ummm, Happy i think, because yeah like living here so.

Oh i thought it was open at 12 O’clock.

No. Thats a different pub there. Its been closed for three years.

The locals want it reopened but the owners want to develop it.

So the whole market has gone to the other pub?

No. Thats a different type of pub.

That was a drinkers pub and that one’s a restaurant.

Ok... well thats got to be quite a big issue?

Its is. Yeah you ort to put that in there, you’ll get some quite waspy things about the pub being closed i should think.

A rural village in the middle of the country really. Ummm not polluted by any lights, because we have no street lights, nothing. So its quite nice.

Lack of anything to do really, theres just a very small ham-let, yeah not many houses, this is actually called Burdrop, so your inbetween two villages.

Crime. Really ummm passing crime i would have thought and just rowdy teenagers looking for something to do. Ok

Community I think, but theres a great sense of commu-nity between actually the Ferris, Gower and Burdrop, and the three of them together.

The Hills. ha ha ha (Laughs) when you’ve got a push chair and you have to go up and down the hills.


Because there is some beautiful landscape and some beautiful houses and there is a duck pond for children, and there’s just a lot to appeal to lots of different ages.

An easter bonnet parade...thats what I would do.

Crime. Just people being brokenn into because it hap-pens a lot.

A Chocolate Digestive...its got the combination of the chocolate and the digestivey bit, its got everything.

Off the top of my head it would be Bluebells, because of the millenium field, which is amazing, which you can walk through the bluebells.

What event...we did a Millenium pagaent in the year 2000, which was supported by most of the village.

I dont know what else we might do, might have open air concerts ,that sort of thing, you know...that sort of thing?

Yeah thats quite nice...yeah.

Oh yes, Theodore Lamb was his name. Yeah

Oh yes, he died before I came here, but he’s legend, he used to charge people to take his photograph, he was like that, he was a very sharp operator.

Sibford Heath?

Yeah somewhere up there, thats up on the top of the village on the way to shipston sort of, he could be quite nasty.....i understand....he was also featured in the pagaent of 2000 I believe.

...well the beauty of the village, take the village pond for example, you can’t see it anymore because the car are parked round it.
