BEAT THE JOB FAIR TRAP! Yet another week of these mega job fairs that only give you sore feet instead of the job. Again. we try to tell you that there is a better way to get a job and it has nothing to do with walking the floor, elevator speeches to people who don't have the power to hire you and a total waste of time resources. Cut out the middle men and earn to apply directly.

MOM & DAD WENT TO THE JOB FAIR AND ALL THEY GOT WERE BROCHURES, WEBSITES

AND SORE FEET! YET THERE IS A BETTER WAY…

WHAT TO DO INSTEAD? IS THERE A BETTER WAY? Here at the Used Job Shack, we believe in the concept of working smarter rather than harder. We have always told you that these big, media driven events are (mostly) worthless to you and your job search. You have a choice. You have the choice of making promoters rich and fat off your hopes and dreams or you can use the “Used Job Shack Formula” to beat the crowds, beat the promoters (and use their own initial marketing against them) and have a very good chance at getting a job (with the same companies who are going to be at the event) or even a better job (all long before the crowds arrive on the day of the event). There is no real trick to the formula other than the proper use of common sense and a willingness to invest sometime into your own future. If you are willing to invest your own time, energy, and commitment to doing your job correctly, we can show you how to beat the Big Job Fair System and be a lot closer to getting a real job instead of a brochure and a web address. It is up to you. It is your call. You can stand in line with half of the unemployed workers in Phoenix (building new friendships) or you can think smarter by understanding and utilizing the following information:

Waiting until the day of event is worthless and will prevent you for getting a job. You need to put this plan in motion 1-2 weeks before the event if you want it to work.

Understand that the promoters will give you a list of all the companies that will be at the event in order to get you excited to come.

Since most companies (at the event) are merely going to tell you to apply online and that attending the event does not advance your application, you are going to do just that but with a twist.

If we are a week or so out from the event, the company already has posted on their website (most if not all), the jobs that they will offer at the job fair. Call or contact the company to see if they are doing any “HIRING EVENT(S)” before the job fair and if so, plan to attend them instead – as your chances of getting hired there are 50-50 (more so if you use Rule Number Four and Six) versus zero at the job fair.

Go through the website and look at all of the jobs. Cherry pick the best jobs for you.

This is where you make your investment in your future by taking the time, energy, and effort to use Rule Number Four to create a “KILLER APPLICATION” for those specific jobs. You will tailor make your application to

Page 3: 8 april 2014 - BEAT THE JOB FAIR TRAP

show the employer that you have the specific skills required for the position that you are applying for. Use the employer’s full job description or ONET. After you complete the application so that you get by the screening gatekeeper, move this information into your resume to create a “KILLER RESUME” to impress the interviewer.

Call or visit the company to discover what the next step is in the application process. With specialized or professional level jobs, the company may utilize recruiters. You mission is to get a name and contact info about the recruiter you need to deal with. Contact them to introduce yourself, sent them your new Killer Resume (created with Rule Number Four), ask them to pull your online application and ask them when you can come down and talk to them about this and/or other related positions that he/she has to offer.

With large companies and entry-level jobs, the process is different. Sometimes they may hire these positions through an agency. Find out which (it is not a secret if you ask) agency, call them, say you were referred by the company and ask who handles that account. Introduce yourself to the person (and because you said that you “were referred by the company” will speed up the process and always gets you better service).

If they hire direct for the job, thank the HR Staff and hang up. Call back, talk to the operator, and ask whom the manager is for the department where the person will work. Now you have a name and an extension to the department, call the department, and ask them for _______ (use the person’s first name) e-mail because you need to send some information over for your boss. This normally works without question. Too nervy for ya? It is easy to figure out a company e-mail address if you have the name (you do have the name from the operator…remember). It is usually a combo of initials and name (look at other e-mail addresses for the company). Contact this person to introduce yourself (same as above). Follow up. Make it your mission to get in to see them.

HIRING EVENTS VERSUS JOB FAIRS? Hiring events are different from a job fair. Hiring event are an event where an employer says I need to hire ____(number) of people for the following position(s) and that you need to come at a special time and location to be interviewed. A hiring event is about being interviewed and hired (if you did your job correctly in preparing for this) directly. This is where you can talk directly to the people who have the power to hire you and if you impress them enough, get hired on the spot.

Page 4: 8 april 2014 - BEAT THE JOB FAIR TRAP

Figure without prep your odds are 50-50. With the proper investment in preparing yourself to be the candidate that the employer needs, you are bumping up to 80/90-10. The more your prepare, have open availability and can play well with others, the more likely it is that you will walk out of there with a job. You cannot say that about job fairs can you? WHAT IS YOUR FIRST STEP? __________________________________________________________________ WHAT DO YOU DO WITH THE EMPLOYER LIST FROM THE JOB FAIR? __________________________________________________________________ HOW DO YOU MAKE A KILLER APPLICATION? A KILLER RESUME FOR THIS JOB? __________________________________________________________________ WHAT DO YOU DO TO FOLLOW UP? __________________________________________________________________

TIPSTER: SPOILER ALERT! CAMPERS! Apply ONLY online and you may be as old as Uncle Bob before they call you in for an interview? Like HMSHOST, they receive so many applications because they are a national (and one of the largest) facilities management company.

RULE # 4 IS CRITICAL HERE (TO A POINT) BUT THERE YOU MUST GO INTO A LOCAL OFFICE AND INTRODUCE YOURSELF.

REMEMBER THE CONCEPT OF MAKING YOURSELF

A SERIOUS CANDIDATE? Remember how HMSHOST tells you to apply online but NEVER pulls applications until after you have tracked down their HR Office and impress them with your “A” Game and show them that you are ready to go to work – only then, do they pull your applicant off their computer. REMEMBER WHY? Because until you did that, you were not a serious candidate in their mind and if you are not serious then they do not need to waste their time with you…they have far too many people applying to care. OK, campers! DITTO HERE! Until you show up and their office totally serious and prepared they more than likely not call you. Rule #4 helps and when they do pull your application, it will be a deal maker because your application will be what they are looking for – if you did Rule #4 correctly.

APPLY ONLINE THEN, SPRUCE UP YOUR “A” GAME AND MAKE A BEE-LINE TO THE NEAREST ABM OFFICE! THERE ARE SEVEN OFFICES IN YOUR AREA: Sky Harbor International Airport Terminal 4, Level 1, Door 7, Phoenix, AZ 642B N. 17th Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85007 2632 W Medtronic Way, Tempe, AZ 85281 2320 E. Jones Rd. Phoenix, AZ 85040 4745 N. 7th Street Ste. 102, Phoenix, AZ 85014 4000 N. Central Ave. Ste. 1750, Phoenix, AZ 85012 3602 E Southern Ave 1 & 2, Phoenix, AZ 85040

Many of their jobs pay very well and they always have a large number of openings. Your background MAY be an issue as many of their locations are in schools, government offices, businesses or large factories.

Page 11: 8 april 2014 - BEAT THE JOB FAIR TRAP

CRIMINAL BACKGROUND Their job description(s) are good at telling you if you should apply or not. The concept is that if they do not say anything, apply and roll the dice…DO NOT ASSUME you know what they mean by “PASS” A Background Check. If you go over there with your “A” Game and you have done your job correctly in frontloading the conversation with your skills (THAT MATCHES WHAT THEY ARE LOOKING FOR) and got them wanting you… Betcha you will not need 100% to pass their check…maybe, you can slide in with a 69% or they will try to find something for you?

YOU WILL NEED ONET TO DO THESE APPLICATIONS ONET will be your best friend in coming up with all of the key words, phrases, skills, and abilities to make it past their computer (the gatekeeper) scan of your application. Remember that the computer will convert your application to a number score (0-100) and the closer you get to (or over) 100, the quicker you get to the interview. Look at your killer resume or application and count all your key words and phrases. Do you have 100? If not, use ONET. It really is that simple…it is a matter of doing the math. It is a matter if you are willing to take the time to do the application correctly. No matter how many applications you do, if you do them wrong, what have you achieved? TO USE ONET GO HERE: http://www.onetonline.org

Feedback is that it is better to go into the closest store between 2-4PM to talk to someone about actual openings…unless you want to spend 50 minutes to find out there are no openings…Don’t figure that a phone is the lazy way out…as they MAY take the easy way out too and just answer “NO.”

COURTESY CLERK AT KROGER - ACCEPTED OFFER Interview Details – Applied in store and was called to interview the next day. Just asked very basic background questions. I don’t think there were any personality questions at all. Overall very easy process which is expected for a very low skilled job. Interview Question –No difficult questions ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CASHIER - ACCEPTED OFFER Interview Details – The interview was pretty formal and easy. The Associate Manager was the one that did the interviewing and she just asked the basic retail questions. It seems that if you get an interview you'll more than likely get the job as long as you don't say anything that would jeopardize that. The manager actually spent more time talking about the company than actually asking questions. She also liked the fact that I was in college since many of the employees there were attending a college or university. They also do an oral drug test with you right away in the office after the interview. Interview Question –There wasn't any difficult or unexpected questions. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CASHIER - ACCEPTED OFFER Interview Details – I applied online. I was contacted 2 weeks later for an interview. I arrived early, and had to wait. The interviewer finally came to interview me. Was immediately asked to see my identification and SS card. She copied it, and then proceeded to give me papers describing the duties of cashier and courtesy clerk. I was asked questions regarding education, past experience, scheduling availability, customer service, and why did I want to work for Kroger. She went over the pay scale, training, scheduling, dress code, lunch/breaks, and insurance. Afterwards, I was given an oral drug test and back ground check. Exactly one week later, I was contacted to come in and do paperwork. Training was then scheduled. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CASHIER - ACCEPTED OFFER Interview Details –Initially received a phone call to schedule an interview several days after my online application. I arrived a bit early so I had to wait for about ten minutes upstairs, I guess they weren't expecting me to be prompt. When my interviewer arrived, it was fairly straightforward and quick from then on. We went into the office and I was asked simple questions about myself, my work experience, and why I wanted to work for Kroger.

Page 14: 8 april 2014 - BEAT THE JOB FAIR TRAP

At that point, the conversation shifted to the job description, work environment, expectations of me, and the drug test I'd have to take. I then was given time to ask questions, and then taken to the HR person to take my drug test. I was called a few days later when the results were in to schedule training and orientation. Easy process and the front end manager were very nice throughout it all. Interview Question –There weren't really any difficult or unexpected questions. They were fairly simple and straightforward. =================================================================== CASHIER - ACCEPTED OFFER Interview Details –Applied online. Standard online application included basic info and a Q&A assessment test. Do not "Strongly Agree" or "Strongly Disagree" with anything and you should pass it just fine. HR called and asked me to come in for an interview with the manager. MCDONALD’S This is it! It's time you worked for someone who will give you the tools to learn, grow and be what you want to be - both personally

and professionally. We're looking for hard working, enthusiastic individuals who want to be a part of a winning team. If you enjoy working with people and love to learn new things, we want to meet you. We offer flexible schedules and

Page 18: 8 april 2014 - BEAT THE JOB FAIR TRAP

the opportunity to advance within our restaurants. Got what it takes? Apply online and see what your future can hold. APPLY TO EACH STORE INDIVIDUALLY – THAT ARE WITHIN 5-10 MILES OF WHERE YOU LIVE TO HAVE THE “ADVANTAGE OF LIVING IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD.”

TIPSTER: Apply to stores that are closest to where you live. This will allow you

to take advantage of living within the neighborhood. Use this technique (below) with stores where the manager's name is posted. Normally, we would tell you to NOT call but, go in person as this is the best way to introduce yourself and to show the manager that you are serious about working for them. McDonald's is different. Managers might manage multiple stores and if you just go, they might not be there.

HERE IS THE MCDONALD'S DRILL: A. Apply online to the store. Do the application correctly (ala Rule Number Four) and complete. B. Call over to the store between 2-4 PM ONLY. C. Whoever answers the phone usually gives you their name, right? Start talking to them like you know them and then ask for their boss by his/her first name. SAMPLE: "Hey, Joe...are you guys swamped...man, we are over here...Hey, is Pedro in? Can I talk to him real quick?" There is a complicate psychological explanation as to why this works but, it does. D. You are on the phone with Pedro. Change gears by saying " Mr. Trujillo, I know you are very busy but, I just completed your online application and I was wondering if you could (please) pull my application (and without pausing or taking a breath…this is critical to making this work) when can I come see you about the position? E. Agree to the time that Pedro gives you and be there 10 minutes early. Please don't say, no I can't come now...otherwise...this call was in vain.

Crew Member - I applied online and the process took a day Interview Details – I applied at McDonalds online and was called in a few days after. The interview took about 5 minutes and was easy for being my first job, for a different employer. She asked me the general questions like,

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? What could you offer us?

Then she asked me to tell a bit about myself, not work related, just in general. I told her I like to read and she asked me what kind of books, being the book worm I am it was difficult telling her which ones I really like so I gave her a broad genre. I believe asking me questions like that made it easier to relax and let the answers flow more naturally. Interview Question –

What could you offer us? ============================================ Crew Member - I applied in-person and the process took a day Interview Details – I filled out a paper application, talked with the hiring manager, and was hired the same day. The interviewer asked a few questions about my personal situation, and then said I was hired. I reported in two days later to begin computer-based training, and worked my first shift two days after that. Interview Question –

Are you sure you want to work here, with all this experience in desk jobs? This is not, sometimes dirty work, standing for the full shift. {KILLER RESUME BIT THIS GUY! I BETCHA, HE WORE A SUIT?}

ANALYSIS: This job requires a lot of skill or ability to observe, report, ability to create documentation and to follow instructions. On the surface you may not see the relationship between what you did and what this job requires. Here is where you confuse experience with skill. You are bringing this to the conversation not the employer. Please show me where the job requires ___ years of experience observing, reporting or preserving order. It does not. So, (by you confusing this issue) you would be presenting yourself as unskilled and lacking in any or all of the 18+ skills and abilities that the employer needed because you confused experience with skills. Re-read the job description and tell me if this employer is asking for experience or is looking for 18+ skills. If you are focused upon experience or that you believe that no experience is required “so I qualify automatically!” Or worse, “”that’s too much work and effort for this job…” Unless you explain to the employer that you do have the skills, how would they know? How would the computer know that as (say) a CASHIER, that you used the majority of those 18 skills on a daily basis? Did you or do you know that?

Page 26: 8 april 2014 - BEAT THE JOB FAIR TRAP

Whatever you put on your application or in your resume become the only truth and information the employer will judge you by.

STILL CONFUSED…I SEE? Let’s break this down further so you really understand this as this is the most critical part of the application process and where 8 out of 10 people lose their chance to get interviewed, talk to a live person and get hired. Let’s examine the various duties and see how they were a part of your everyday work life. Let’s start with (say) a CASHIER who has never been a security card but, she has 3-5 years of experience working in a retail store. HERE IS THE CUT-N-PASTED JOB DESCRIPTION FROM HER RESUME: 2009 – Present CASHIER, BIG BOX WALLYCO – Phoenix, AZ “Worked as a retail cashier operating a POS Electronic Cash Register, handled money and processed payments. Answered customer questions, did price checks and kept the register clean. Counted and balance cash door at end of shift. Sometimes opened or closed store and helped with related paperwork.”

OK. This is actually better than many of you have as a job description. But, does it show the employer that she has the NEEDED skills to be a security guard? How many of the 18+ skills did she list in her job details? If you were a computer screening for 18+ skills did you find any? So, would she qualify? Thought so! Only if the employer was her cousin and already knew that about her actual cashiering experience and could see how all of the 18+ skills were incorporated into her job because cashiering is a passive form of security. HERE IS THE “USED JOB SHACK METHOD” FROM WHAT SEE ACTUALLY DID DAILY: Same person, same experience and skills but actual written from the understanding that the employer did not/does not understand the actual duties of a cashier. 2009 – Present CASHIER, BIG BOX WALLYCO – Phoenix, AZ “Working at the store’s front register, I was required to observe and report suspicious activities and incidents to my manager and if there was an incident, I was required to write a complete report, submit documentation or fill out required corporate, police or for insurance forms in the case of loss or damage. Provided for the security and safety of client property by checking for irregularities – inspected items, examined items being purchased to ensure that the price codes had not been switched or altered. Was required to preserve order and successfully deal with disruptive, angry or customers who might be impaired by drugs or alcohol and to provide for the security and safety of client (store’s) property while - providing for the security and safety of the store’s personnel. Controlled access to control merchandize that was either expensive or age restricted behind locked cabinets to prevent snatch-n-grab thieves. When not on the register, patrolled assigned site location within the store to inspect merchandise, practiced

Page 27: 8 april 2014 - BEAT THE JOB FAIR TRAP

passive shop lifting prevention methodologies, checked and reported to the manager or the maintenance staff any unsafe conditions from improperly stacked merchandise, mechanical or equipment problems and/or hazards of wet floors to exposed wiring. Responded to incidents of broken, spilled merchandise or customer related emergencies (which required documentation of the event and reports to be written). Stocked, removed merchandise from assigned area (and the front-end of the store if on register) and restocked a wide range of merchandize that (many times) required the lifting and/or moving of merchandise up to 25+ pounds. Operating the store’s cash register (a POS Computer register) required excellent reaching with hands and arms, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling to retrieve dropped merchandise or funds. Always operated the register required that the register be concisely checked, monitored and observed for any mechanical problems. Whenever there was a transaction with checks or credit cards it was vital that a check be made to insure that the purchaser(s) were authorized person(s) to use the credit card or verify that the card was not stolen…”

Does it show the employer that she has the NEEDED skills to be a security guard? How many of the 18+ skills did she list in her job details? If you were a computer screening for 18+ skills did you find any? So, would she qualify? Thought so!

IS SSP AMERICA TRULY? Here in Phoenix, SSP America has two separate operations. One is at Sky Harbor Airport and there is the Homeland Security Badging process. The badging process is complicated. Some things are acceptable after “X” number of years while other things are never. Many times, even the employers are not sure.

DON’T ASSUME THAT THE ANSWER IS NO. If the employer is not certain how can you be? Contact the Sky Harbor Badging Office and make sure. Better to ask and be surprised than to just walk away from a great opportunity to only find out you were wrong.

SSP AMERICA also has a 48,000 sq. ft. cooking facility off the airport at 16th St. and Grant. Since this is not at the airport, different rules and measures are in place. At the Grant Facility, your skills, abilities are the first consideration. If you have done your job to show them how well you match the skills that they need, you will find that they are much more willing to talk about your past. They are concerned with who you are and what you bring to the table. They look at the age, IMPORTANTLY they want to know the circumstances as to what happened, do you have remorse and what have you done to put your life back together. You need to reassure them that you are NO LONG that person and illustrate by what you have done to make yourself different. Repentant people are unlikely to repeat past mistakes. They look at how old the offence(s) are (with age and lack of additional charges a good indicator of truth on your part).

BEST ADVISE “BE HONEST…BE HUMAN!” If people see you as a human being, then mistakes are expected as is help and assistance. ==================================================================

STUDY THE BACKGROUND OF THE COMPANY AND BE PREPARED TO GIVEN AN EXTENSTED ANSWER TO THE QUESTIONS:

“What do you know about our company?”

“Why do you want to work for us at the Airport?”

USED JOB SHACK SSP STUDY GUIDE: If you really want a career with this company it is to your benefit to know who they are, what they do, how well they do it and what is their future.

Why should you put in all this extra effort for another interview at another cooking facility? If you don’t already know the answer to this…you are in the wrong spot, reading the wrong thing. To humor you…let’s go through this again:

A. They have just received an 11 year contract with Sky Harbor. B. Since they have been here less than 6 months…they are not going anywhere

for a long time and that gives you STABILITY! C. They are young here in the valley but, already, have a rep for promoting from

within. Many of the people who went to the initial rounds of interviews (several months back) have already been promoted to leads or supervisors.

D. They offer benefits from day one. E. They are ONLY one-third full on their staffing.

WHO ARE THEY? How long have they been in business?

How many countries are they in?

Page 34: 8 april 2014 - BEAT THE JOB FAIR TRAP

What are their two “catch phrases?” (What two things are their passions?)

How do they see themselves? They are _________ of the ________ Food Industry.

How strongly do they believe in TEAM WORK and how does that work for them?

WHO ARE YOU? Do you share their passions? In what way(s)? Be able to explain how that

has an effect upon the quality of your effort at work?

Do you have direct, prior experience in the industry? Related industry?

DEPENDING UPON POSITION. COOKING:

Do you have 6 months to a year of work experience?

Do you have a specialty?

Do you know what restaurants that they are cooking for?

How and why would you be good at a specific restaurant or better still in all around cooking?

DEPENDING UPON POSITION.CASHIERING/HOST/RETAIL SALES ASSOCIATE:

Can you operate a POS (point-of-sales) cash register?

Do you have good cash handling skills?

How good are you on handling/dealing with complaints?

Would the airport be an exciting place to work? If so, please explain why.

Are you a people person? Do you enjoy and work will in a constantly changing setting? Can you work under pressure? Please be able to have an example or two that demonstrated this.

What does customer service mean to you and how do you make that a part of how you do your job?

What is your concept of team work and how does this affect your daily work?

Have an example in how team work made the difference at being successful.

SECURITY: Are you able to pass a Homeland Security Background Test? Drug Test?

Page 35: 8 april 2014 - BEAT THE JOB FAIR TRAP

Do you have or can assemble a list of places that you have lived and worked for the past ten years?

Do you already have an AZ Fingerprint Clearance Card? Do you have an AZDPS Security Guard License?

HOW ARE YOU GOING TO DRESS TO APPLY? Please remember that they are a very large company and that these positions are NOT at their commissary but, at the airport. How well you present yourself is a factor in the decision making to hire you or not. Dress should be AZ Casual or above. This needs to be “going to work” clothes not “going to the club” or “hanging out at the park” style of fashion. ================================================================== We are truly the Food Travel Experts, skilled in combining global reach with a distinctive local touch. TIPSTER: Here is where most people go wrong. They assume since the employer

is asking for very little or no work experience that it does not require skills and abilities. From there they say “Hey! I can send them my retail or fast food resume because it does not matter…” Right here, you lost your chance to get this job. What the employer really said was that “I don’t care where you learned to sort trays nor do I (really) care how long you have done this; because it is more important that you know how to sort…”

LOCALIZE YOUR JOB SEARCH AND YOU CAN ENHANCE YOUR CHANCES OF

GETTING HIRED…@ SAFEWAY! STAY WITHIN 5 MILES OF YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD (85008) IN CENTRAL THE PHOENIX/AIRPORT AREA….AS THIS IS YOUR SEARCH LOCAL ZONE…

STEP ONE: APPLY ONLINE…

http://www.careersatsafeway.com/ DID YOU KNOW? 80% of all applications get thrown away because you NEVER showed the employer that you had the skills that THEY were looking for. You got too caught up with explaining what you did instead of showing how that related to what this employer wanted. HINT: If I was an auto mechanic applying for a courtesy clerk position at Food City…the last thing I would talk about would be repairing a car…I

would talk about dealing with my customers, resolving their problems…MAKE SENSE? TRY IT! IT DOES WORK MIRACLES! YOU MUST HAVE OPEN AVAILABLE TO WORK IN THIS INDUSTRY UNLESS YOU ARE APPLYING FOR PT WORK.

Page 39: 8 april 2014 - BEAT THE JOB FAIR TRAP

STEP TWO: GO INTRODUCE YOURSELF…If you really want the job, demonstrate that by

going over to the store and introducing yourself…If you can’t or won’t…this tells the employer everything they need to know about how seriously you REALLY want their job…NOT! Most importantly, this says that you do not care enough…that you might do this job…OR NOT? NO ONE wants to hire the person who demonstrates that they would take this job as a last resort…everyone wants to hire the person who is excited…who likes/love the work and who appreciates the opportunity to get THIS job.

STEP THREE: Explain that you understand that you are being offered an opportunity and

that you appreciate it…because the employer believes that they are offering you an opportunity and most applicants (mostly those not hired) never demonstrate that they get it…little-a-lone that they appreciate it. At the end of the interview, tell the employer that you

still want the job…these things make a big difference and many times…means the difference between getting hired or not. APPLY NOW FROM OUR ONLINE CAREER CENTER AT http://www.careersatsafeway.com/ NOTE: ALL APPLICATIONS ARE ACCEPTED AND A CRIMINAL RECORD WILL NOT DISQUALIFY YOU FROM EMPLOYMENT! The nature of the offence and how it related to the position that you are applying for plus the age of the offence and the circumstances of the offence.

TIPSTER: HUMANIZE THIS! There is a big difference in I stole to feed my babies versus I stole that big screen TV from WALMART…GET IT???? http://www.careersatsafeway.com/

THE SWEETEST DEAL IN TOWN IS HERE!

THIS WEEK ONLY!

This is the sweetest deal in town. The job requires almost no experience but it requires patience and ability to keep on task. You are taking calls from people who have just bought an regridgerator, a washing machine or a related product from a Sears Store. At the front end of the conversation you are evil, a villian or worse a crook

for selling them that no good washer. You work them through a series of questions and if you can’t solve their problem, you schedule a service tech to repair or replace the item. At the end of this conversation they believe you are the nicest, the sweetest person in the world because you are fixing their problem. Over simplied? Not really, that’s what you do! The number reason (I am told by Sears) that a new applicance doesn’t work is that it is not plugged in or there is no power at the plug. Here is the sweet part of the deal, for every time you fix the problem without scheduling a service tech, you make a $5 bonus. If this is the number reason why pepople are calling, how many bonuses will you make on top of your $12 Base?

Inbound Customer Service and Sales Representative

0 - 1 Years’ Experience & GED/HS.

Don’t let this fool you! Your SAFEWAY RESUME will not help you here. If you use that to do this application you are very lost and might as well just stay home!

Did you know how to take those key words, phrases and write an intelligable narrative for each job that the recruiter would see… OH WELL! Better luck next time…you’ll have to wait 6-8 weeks to replace what you just uploaded…SORRY!!! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you do not know what Rule # 4 is then, campers you are in a bit-of-a-pickle aren’t ya? USED JOB SHACK INSIDER…SEARS CALL CENTER CALL CENTER REPRESENTATIVE - I applied online and the process took 3 days Interview Details – I applied online, did the assessment, and within the next two days I was called for a phone screen. Basic questions about past experiences and customer services examples. Set up an interview for the next week. The interview was fairly easy. Same basic questions. They also have you act out a little just to see if you could be sympathetic. Got offered a position the same day. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CALL CENTER REPRESENTATIVE - I applied online and the process took 1+ week Interview Details – Did one phone interview. Also had to take multiple tests on a computer which took 2 hours. Then I interviewed with 2 managers. The questions they ask where very different from any normal interview. They also do role playing in the interview. The manager also said I would be hired at full time 32 but could work more which is only true for 4 weeks during Christmas. I was also told there is room to grow which is true but don’t expect a Pay raise for learning new skills Interview Question – Tell me how you achieved a goal. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CALL CENTER REPRESENTATIVE - I applied online and the process took a day Interview Details – had to listen to calls for about 30 minutes or so. I think they actually forgot to come get me but after working there it wouldn't surprise me at all. Then I interviewed with two managers and had to do some role playing. Interview was easy for me. No unusual questions and nothing unexpected. Interview Questions

Greatest strengths

Greatest weakness --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Top 7 SEARS interview questions Why do you want to work for Sears?

What do you know about Sears?

What are your career goals?

What are your biggest strengths?

How long would you expect to work for Sears if hired?

Do you know anyone who works for Sears? Why should Sears hire you?

For one, the interview questions “give us reasons to hire you”, “why should we employ you” or “what can you bring to our company” is something that differentiates the best candidates from the other good candidates. This question deals with your ability to sell yourself. Think of yourself as the product. Why should the customer buy?

Page 53: 8 april 2014 - BEAT THE JOB FAIR TRAP

WEAK ANSWERS: “I AM A HARD WORKER.” This is a really trite answer — almost anyone can say he or

“BECAUSE I NEED A JOB.” This answer is about YOU — “they” want to know what you can do for “them.”

“I SAW YOUR AD AND COULD DO THE JOB.” This answer lacks passion and purpose.

STRONGER ANSWERS: “I HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO FILL THE REQUIREMENTS OF THIS JOB – solve customer

problems using my excellent customer service skills.”

“I HAVE THREE YEARS’ EXPERIENCE WORKING WITH CUSTOMERS IN A VERY SIMILAR ENVIRONMENT.”

“I HAVE THE EXPERIENCE AND EXPERTISE IN THE AREA OF CUSTOMER SUPPORT THAT IS REQUIRED IN THIS POSITION.”

===================================================== WARNING: BEING HIRED DOES NOT MEAN YOU WILL WORK!

MANY FACTORS TIE INTO YOU GETTING HOURS WITH THEM…ALSO, KNOW THAT THEY REQUIRE AN EXPENSIVE UNIFORM REQUIREMENT FOR BANQUET SERVICES – TUXEDO PANTS AND ECT… SOME PEOPLE WITH OPEN AVAILABILITY AND THEIR OWN TRANSPORTATION CAN DO GOOD BY THEM… IF YOU RIDE THE BUS, CAN’T WORK CERTAIN HOURS OR HAVE CONCERNS ABOUT END OF SHIFT, STAY HOME AND DO NOT GO APPLY, THEY WILL

HIRE YOU BUT, YOU MAY NEVER WORK!

IF YOU MATCH WHAT THEY ARE LOOKING FOR, THEN CHECK THEM OUT AS THEY DO HAVE A TON OF SHORT TERM EMPLOYMENT. THE MORE DEPENDABLE YOU ARE, THE HARDER YOU WORK…THE MORE THEY WILL OVER YA!

“LOCALIZE YOUR JOB SEARCH AND YOU CAN ENHANCE YOUR CHANCES OF GETTING HIRED…”

- A TIP FROM FOOD CITY STAY WITHIN 5 MILES OF YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD

Page 60: 8 april 2014 - BEAT THE JOB FAIR TRAP

WELCOME TO THE FIRST

FIRST, IF YOU MISSED LAST WEEK’S JOB FAIR…YOU DIDN’T MISS ANYTHING OTHER THAN SORE FEET, MASSIVE CROWDS AND ENDLESS BROCHURES AND WEBSITES! NOW IT IS YOUR TURN TO CREATE A JOB FAIR FOR ONE…YOURSELF, FOR YOURSELF AND TO GET YOU HIRED…BIG OR LITTLE, IT IS UP TO YOU!

CREATING YOUR OWN JOB FAIR… Here is your direct chance to set up and do your own job fair. No, you will not need to set up tables or let the neighbors know that 10,000 people will be at your apartment between 9 AM to 2 PM tomorrow. It is not that kind of event but, it will achieve much more than you did at the Big Dog Agency Job Fair(s). This homegrown creation of your own job fair allows you to select the employer list that you want. It could be 200 or it could be 10 employers on your list. You decide and prepare for them the same way you would if they were meeting you at the stadium.

HERE IS HOW YOU CREATE YOUR OWN JOB FAIR: Make a list of employers that you are interested in (Like the job fair employer

list)

Do your homework to find out everything that you can (same as the brochure that you would have got at the real job fair)

Call the HR Office and ask how do they and where do they advertise new jobs

Follow up on that information to see what they have openings for

Before you apply, get the company’s job description and/or go to ONET to get all of the key words, phrases, skills and abilities you will need to do the application correctly.

Take your time and do the application correct. This is critical to the success of your job fair. NEVER DO MORE THAN TWO APPLICATIONS PER DAY AS EACH WILL TAKE YOU SEVERAL HOURS TO DO PROPERLY!

Call the HR Office and advise them you applied and ask as to how you can follow up on this.

Page 61: 8 april 2014 - BEAT THE JOB FAIR TRAP

TIPSTER: If you are asking this question while standing live at the HR Office (with smaller companies), you could end up sitting down with the hiring manager – so go looking like you are ready to go to work.

ALTERNATIVE NEXT STEP: Look on the next page to learn how to locate and contact the hiring authority you need to get your information to…

FINDING THE RIGHT PERSON, IN THE RIGHT LOCATION, AT THE RIGHT TIME…

Unlike the Big Dog, 250 Employer Job Fair, where you were none of these things, your job fair of one can (with you doing your job) find the right person, get to the right place (on an invite) and if you have done your homework about the company, you will be in a place with the ability to say the right thing!

FINDING THE RIGHT PERSON

Not really all that hard to do if you channel the “Double Odd” Spy in you. It can be simple as calling and asking who is in charge of the department or section where the job is. With large, publically held companies, this information is in the company’s prospective (free to all who are interested in buying stock from the marketing department or online). Threw that one in for the high-end, corporate types who leave here disappoint. OK, back to all the really people who are needing a real job. Again simply call is the best way, if it is a secret, I might want to wonder why and then rethink working for them.

Page 62: 8 april 2014 - BEAT THE JOB FAIR TRAP

TRICKY WAYS: Always remember the psychological fact that you have a 14 second window to operate in before a person makes the decision to listen to you or stop. This means that anything you say to them has to spark their interest to continue after those first 14 seconds.

HERE ARE WAYS TO UTILIZE THIS AND GET THE INTEL YOU NEED.

Call the company – better to have the correct department or if not possible talk to the operator.

Whoever answers the phone gives you their name, right? This is a common practice in companies. Remember it and/or write it down.

Refer to them by first name and start talking to them like you are old BFFs (Best Friends for Forever…like for sure!)

Start a conversation with “Man…are we swamped over here, how are you guys doing? Hey, my boss is got me doing that stupid contact sheet again…

It’s so far out-of-date…Hey, is Mister Johnson still running everything in the Department? {PAUSE while they tell you that there is no Mister Johnson and then interrupt} See, I told you this was a mess!”

What is going on their brain is nothing because you are in that 14 second window and you are talking like you know them and (without thought) they will give you a name. They do this because you caught them off balance and hooked them into a conversation before their brain could kick in.

If you got a name, ask them “this at this number right?” “Do they have an e-mail?” Now, you are set.

Finish the call by making them feel good. “Sylvia. You may have saved my job! Thanks so much. Hey we need to do lunch the next time I’m over there.”

They will brag about how they saved your job and that you owe them lunch to all their friends…they won’t remember your name but, they will remember you.

Page 63: 8 april 2014 - BEAT THE JOB FAIR TRAP

If you didn’t get an e-mail address, don’t worry because one of the Auntie Sue and Uncle Bob’s Used Job Shack share this with us the techniques on how to figure this out…READ ON!!

THE ART OF E-MAIL ADDRESSING….

Chris Hogg I help people make informed, self-directed career decisions and

help them conduct effective employment searches…

ABOUT FINDING EMAIL ADDRESSES. When you get a person’s name, such as Auntie Sue:

SCENARIO 1: Do a Google search in the format of: “*@domainname.extension” For example, if the person you want to reach works at www.topflitebbq.com your Google search would be “*@topflitebbq.com” The asterisk wildcard will return names preceding the email address, such as, for example, [email protected] [email protected] and [email protected] Here you see a consistent pattern: firstname dot lastname Compose your email, address it to [email protected] and send it. Wait a couple or 5 minutes, and if you don’t get a non-delivery message back, you can safely assume your email went through.

SCENARIO 2: Do a Google search in the format of: “*@domainname.extension” For example, if the person you want to reach works at www.bigwarehouse.com your Google search would be “*@bigwarehouse.com” The asterisk wildcard will return names preceding the email address, such as, for example, [email protected] [email protected] and [email protected] What do you do now, since there is no standard pattern for the individual names? You experiment. First, you send an email to [email protected] and wait about 5 minutes. If you don’t get a non-delivery message back, you can assume the email went through. If you do get a non-delivery message back, then you . . .

Page 64: 8 april 2014 - BEAT THE JOB FAIR TRAP

Second, send an email to [email protected] and wait about 5 minutes. If you don’t get a non-delivery message back, you can assume the email went through. If you do get a non-delivery message back, then you . . . Third, send an email to [email protected] and wait about 5 minutes. If you don’t get a non-delivery message back, you can assume the email went through. If you do get a non-delivery message back, then you . . . Fourth, try different formats of names until one of them goes through or until you run out of practical options. =============================================================

Thanks Chris! Thanks for the INTEL...Campers! This is a powerful tool that needs to be used wisely or else it could become a weapon of mass destruction to your ability to get a job.

Remember, be respectful of this person, understand that their time is valuable and keep it on point with your request that they pull your application and tell them why they should (dudes...dudettes! Your talking points..."You were looking for a person with ____ years of exp....I actually have ___ years...You need someone certified to be ______I am and have been for the past ___ years...ECT..." - You did do your homework...Right? So that you can have that conversation - because you know what they are looking for and then ask them when they would have time to see you. "When can I come over to talk with you about this opening?") The last part is critical. It is the difference between getting an interview or nor (getting hired or not)...Learned that as a kid while working on the car lot! You always have to close and create the sale...DON'T EXPECT YOUR CUSTOMER TO MAKE THE FIRST MOVE... This (for a lot of weird reasons) is the same...there is a good cheddar of a story...almost a Swiss but, I will leave it for now...the Walking Dead is about the start! So, campers! Remember keep on track unlike old Uncle Bob...Show respect of their time and position...Loop the conversation into reminding the employer on what they needed and then loop again into how you fit each of those needs...Know about the company and CLOSE THE SALE by asking "when can I come talk to you?'

CHRIS IS DE TOPPS! Thanks for helping out and sharing!!!!!

A YOUNG LADY CRIED: “I HAVE NO SKILLS!” “I HAVE NO EXPERIENCE!” “I HAVE NO HOPE!” With that she had resigned herself to the helplessness of your plight and that it wasn’t worth the effort to try. I told her that this was a copout and that I wasn’t going to let her do that. I said that because her conclusion was so far from true anywhere except in her mind. In fact, all of the jobs that she seemed to have an interest in center around what she felt comfortable with, that she had spent years (at home) perfected her skills and abilities to a master’s level.

In several of these areas, she was truly a journey level person: Cleaning, cooking and caregiving. In fact, I had to warn her that she may be over qualified for the entry level jobs in those industries. In each, she had professional experience and must be pretty good at each - as she says her kids never throw food back at her – and if anyone would, they would…the hardiest critiques come from those we care about the most…No space to explain…hope you get the jest of the argument. Whether others would agree with this assessment depends solely on her ability to showcase skills and abilities. It is like the old man use to say: “If the job is riding a bicycle…do you really care where I learned to or that I can?” In these entry level jobs experience is not necessary but, skills and abilities are! This special issue came out of that conversation…Hope it can help others!
