After transferring from Central Bucks East last summer, he was forced to wait until his transfer was approved by the PIAA District One Committee. He could
practice in the interim and spent a lot of time directing the scout team, but could not play in a game.
“It was tough,” he recalled, “but I just had to do whatever I could to help this team no matter what I was doing and I worked hard. Once I got in and I got the
approval to play, I was ready.”
If there was an upside to the situation, it was the fact that Vierling had the
opportunity to get to know his new teammates as people as well as
athletes.
“Mitchell had an opportunity two weeks before school started to make
new friends and understand how William Tennent works,” said his coach,
Leo Plenski. “He felt comfortable right off the get go.
“He was learning as we went on each week and understood that he would
probably be getting an opportunity to play.”
Vierling says that by the time he took the eld, for the seventh game of
the season against Souderton, his teammates were comfortable with him
at the throttle.
“I kind of worked my way into having my guys have con dence in me ever
since I came,” he said, “and once I got the approval and my coach told me
to let the team know then guys gathered around me right away. Everyone
came up to me and congratulated me and said ‘We’re ready to have you.’ ”
The Panthers didn’t win any of the games Vierling started; they nished
0-10 to extend their losing streak to 17 games. But with the 2017 opener
against Upper Moreland at hand, Vierling says he and his teammates are
optimistic about the season to come.
“It all started in the offseason,” he said. “We just set our goal to win our
rst game. Once we win our rst game, then we’re off to the next game.
We’ve got a great group of seniors who are just focused on winning and
changing this program.”
Strengths & Weaknesses
Vierling’s presence for a full season will provide fresh energy to a Tennent
team that has lost its last 17 games. There is speed and experience at the
other skill positions, as well as in the secondary. But while there is some
good size along the offensive and defensive fronts, the talent pool at
those positions is not especially deep and some players had to switch
positions to ll the gaps.
