The Managing Trustee, Mr. Haneefbhai Belim welcomed everyone and initiated
the discussion with Mahatma Gandhi’s contribution in the freedom struggle.
When Mahatma Gandhi came back to India after successful Satyagrah against
racism in South Africa, historically multiple attempts, violent or legal were done
for the freedom but unfortunately all of them were unsuccessful. He said, “By
the time Gandhiji took over the command of Indian freedom struggle, we were
not behaving as one country. Gandhiji was the only men who had touched
everyone, rich, poor, and people of all religions-all castes. He actually untied
everyone and that was his major contribution in to the freedom struggle of the
country.”
Gandhiji’s partnership with Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was very well known. The
Gandhian expert moderated the discussion further and said, “Gandhiji’s biggest
contribution to Indian freedom struggle was Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Barrister
Vallabhbhai Patel was a man Dressed in a western suit playing bridge at the
Gujarat Club of Ahmedabad, the first time Patel had the opportunity to meet
Gandhi, he scoffed at his unusual methods and ideas. Within two years of that
meeting, Patel had become one of Gandhi's most ardent satyagrahis.”

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and his skill of leadership were put to test by Gandhiji
in 1918. Gandhiji assigned him the task of Kheda Peasants’ Satyagrah which
Sardar Patel led successfully. After completion of the successful Satyagrah,
Gandhiji had said, “I must admit that when I first met Vallabhbhai, I could not
help wondering who this haughty person was, and whether he could be able to
do what I wanted…if it were not for his assistance, this campaign could not have
been carried through so successfully.”
Meeting Gandhi, being entrusted as the second-in-command at Kheda by Gandhi
and the continued association with Gandhi proved to be a turning point in
Vallabhbhai's life.

The Gandhian expert further said about Patel joining Indian freedom struggle,
“Giving up his ambitions and dreams, Patel followed in the footsteps of the
Mahatma nursing the cherished desire of freedom. He had once said ’I took to
this life after mature consideration and not on the spur of the moment’. This
decision altered no doubt his own life. But it altered also the destiny of the
nation.”

Ashna Sheikh, student of the college shared his views about the theme. She said,
“Gandhiji and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, both were the leaders of the grass root
level. Both of them worked for farmers, peasants, mill workers and the last man
in the society. They both worked for bonding between communities and this led
to the creation of our beloved nation.”
The Secretary, Yasin B. Qazi while summing up said, “Gandhiji and Sardar
Patel’s contribution in India’s freedom struggle cannot be separated. Gandhiji
created the feeling of oneness amongst all Indias and gave the idea of India
while Sardar Patel, using his strong leadership and communication skills, was
able to merge them in to one nation with sharp administrative skills.”
