an important cornerstone for the community of Bury.

we hold educat ional programs, work in partnership with

societies. The Mosses Community Association prides itself

on having a welcoming environment which is inclusive,

    responsive & innovative.

The Centre is run by the Mosses Community Association

which is a local charity that relies on the support of

individuals and organisations to run the Centre and

    Community activities.

    We need you.

    CHAIRMAN, JEFF BARKERSINTRODUCTION.

Many things have been achieved in the last

twelve months, all due to the hard work of

members, staff and volunteers. To me the

highlights have been the celebrations of

the award of outstanding from the OF-

STED inspection for the Mosses Pre-school

gained at the end of the previous year, the

success of the boiler replacement due to

the fundraising efforts of our community

members and most importantly the way

in which members, groups and staff have

cooperated to look to the future develop-

ments of the Centre and its further vision.

Last year I referred to our difficult econom-

ic climate and our aims to operate within

strict financial constraints, yet looking to

continue to improve the environment and

facilities for the whole of the Mosses com-

munity. In terms of our financial position,

we have managed this exceptionally well

and our position at the end of the financial

year is better than I have ever known it.

With regard to the building, we have con-

sulted widely and taking on all your com-

ments and suggestions, once we receive

the final consultation report we will be

looking for funding to improve the building

and its facilities. These are demanding and

    exciting times!

I am reminded of when visitors come to the

Mosses Centre how amazed and impressed

they are at the enormous diversity of our

groups and what takes place within the

confines of the building. The welcoming

atmosphere from both members and staff

has been referred to many times. This is

something we can all be proud of.

During this year we have seen an increase

in the number of Trustees and also from

new interested people willing to be con-

sidered as Trustees. We truly are living in

    exciting and challenging times.

Finally I wish to thank you all for your sup-port, members, staff and volunteers, for

your efforts and understanding. When we

    act together nothing is impossible.

    Jeff Barker- Chair.

    ENJOYABLE

The Mosses Centre is a recreational home for many

members. We provide a meeting place for over forty clubs

and groups every week. Our members range from young

budding Karate champions, right to way through to The Red

    Rose (60 Years Plus).

We have rooms for hire including our large Main Hall with a

bar and dance floor for weddings, parties, quiz nights and

large gatherings. Our gym is suitable for sports and exercise

classes or even for hosting childrens birthday parties. Wealso have smaller rooms for meeting or training purposes.

A large portion of the centres work revolves around

educationg members. This can take place in weekly groups

& activities, free courses, or pre-school. We believe all

members deserve the right to education.

    FRIENDLY

Mosses is a community based centre, friendship is

inevitable. A great example is the group Gateway, starting 30

years ago so that members could come along to meet their

friends. Over a hundred people are a part of Gateway, they

listen to music, dance, have a game of pool, and play air

    hockey, table football and dominoes.

The Mosses Community Association is a Registered Charity

that exists to meet the needs of the local community and

the residents of the whole of Bury Metropolitan Borough by

providing opportunities to fulfil their social, recreational

    and learning aspirations.

Community courses are frequently run with the idea of

bridging the gap to higher education. Members who study

on these courses often undergo further education at Bury

College. For information visit Bury Councils website.

The year 2011/2012 will probably be

remembered for our Boiler Appeal, when

    many Mosses user groups surpassed

themselves in raising over 5,000 in justa few months. This, and a grant from the

Awards For All National Lottery fund,

means that the risk of relying on a boiler

that is over 35 years old has now gone.

The year saw us continuing to provide a

community hub for the many and varied

groups and services that happen weekly in

the Centre (See the lists on page 6 and 7)

and providing our own projects to benefit

    the Community.

The year also could be described as

regrouping and looking to the future in

terms of our staff and trustees. The staff

have been expanding their roles andworking as a team to give an efficient and

welcoming service to our users and user

groups, while the trustees having added

to their number have been looking at the

strategic vision to take the Mosses into the

future. All involved with the Mosses are

grateful to those organisations that have

funded the Mosses over the year. These are

    listed on the following page.

How time flies, just over a year ago we had been inspected by Ofsted and gainedrecognition for our dedication to providing Quality Childcare in our Mosses Pre-School. We were awarded Outstanding in all 17 areas of our work. This was an

excellent start to the year with staff morale at its highest. Bury Early Years teamhave on many occasions, brought staff members from other similar provisions toours, to see what can be achieved within a multipurpose room/put away provisionand a limited budget. This is again recognition of the good work by The Mossesexcellent dedicated staff team of professional early years practitioners. This year wecan celebrate the fact that Karen completed her Foundation Degree in Early YearsPractice. Although this has been extremely hard work for Karen to balance her homelife with 3 children, work and study she is nowdoing her top up BA Honours. Sarah and Donna enrolled in September via HolyCross College to follow in Karens footsteps and study for The Foundation Degreein Early Years Practice. Michelle having completed a taster course in Sign Languagehere at the Mosses, enrolled at Adult Learning for an intensive course which she will

complete in a year. This will be very useful as the recommended guide lines is thatit is good practice for childcare practitioners, to teach Sign Language to all childrenas a communication tool. This, of course, as research tells us supports children withlanguage delay and those who have English as their second language.

We continue to provide good quality childcare and serve our local community. Ourchildren appear happy, stimulated and develop an interest in learning. We have anexcellent reputation for being a really good provider of Early Years Education. Ourprediction based on our waiting list, together with our parents requesting that theirchildren remain with us next year, is that we will be full at the start of the new schoolyear in September.

Stay and Play projectOur continuing contract with Little Oaks Childrens Centre means that we continue toprovide a weekly Stay and Play session. Local parents bring their young children tohave fun and interact with other families and make new friends. We also provide a toylibrary so children and parents can do an activity together at home; this has provento be very popular. Two staff are on hand to support and advise parents with relatedchildcare issues.

Outreach ServiceAlso in partnership with Little Oaks we have an Outreach Service where we supportfamilies in their own homes as well as in the community. The referrals for thesefamilies come from other professionals such as health visitors. Together we assess theconcerns and plan a piece of work to support the family.

Our Mosses Pre-school is also funded to provide childcare places for parents

attending groups at the Mosses. For example an ESOL class where parents learnEnglish.

In addition to the Mosses Pre-school we have a crche service for Mosses usergroups. For example, Eagles Wing is a group based here at the Mosses who help/support asylum seekers and refugees. This group, via a Children in Need grant ,commission us to provide a crche on two mornings per week. Whilst the childrenare being cared, for their parents can enjoy time to join a sewing group and a parentsupport group. We had a moment of fame when BBC radio Manchester came to theMosses to do a live interview about how the Children in Need money is used.

As you can see the Mosses supports local and borough wide families and theirchildren to provide good quality childcare and family support.

The delivery of courses in a community setting has attracted adults from the localcommunity and many have been encouraged to move on to courses at Adult Learning& Bury College.

Many people who enrolled on courses were volunteers, either with Mosses usergroups, or from other Bury based community & voluntary sector organisations.

Many existing volunteers have gained new skills on courses and increased in

confidence.Example comments from Feedback forms:-Help family to be safe on line (Computer security)Better relationship with deaf sister (Introduction to sign Language)Confident to deal with emergencies (Emergency fist aid for children)I can use it for typing letters (Basic computers for the confused)If anything happens when I am coaching (emergency first aid)Easy to understand (Food Hygiene)Will help myself & the lady I share my home with to relax more and give us anactivity to do together, (Hair & Beauty)I want to start a new business (Introduction to setting up a small business

The Junior Youth Club provided a valuable service to children of east Bury agedbetween 8 - 12 years old. Most weeks saw 20 young people attending our session onWednesday evenings.

Over the summer, an innovation for the club was Outreach work in the Openshawpark to take advantage of the light evenings and to work with different young people.

The club has been funded by a variety of funding streams over the years which have

increasingly become short term. Funding from Forever Manchester allowed us tocontinue the club up to the summer months this year . Unfortunately the club did notre-open after the summer and the Association is exploring strategic ways to continueto this work in conjunction with continuing the Youth club work (see the next page).

In liaison with Bury Council Youth Service a Youth Club for the over 12s met weekly.Members of the Junior Club where able to attend this club when they reachedthe appropriate age. Unfortunately from April 2011 the Club was a victim of BuryCouncils Youth Service cuts .

The Association is looking to find the resources to continue youth and Junior workin area. As we move into the new financial year a one-off grant from Bury CouncilsYouth Review Fund wi ll al low us to employ a part time Youth Development Worker

to work with 13 to 19 year olds. Which could be a launch pad for further Youth andJunior work.

    CIVIL SERVICE RETIREMENT FELLOWSHIP

Absences due to ill-health restricted our activities at the beginning of the year, butwe continued to meet each week and maintained our visiting commitments to thosemembers no longer able to attend. Things began to pick up following our AGMand between September 2011 and March 2012 we managed to squeeze in a talkSafeguarding your Finances, a Lancashire based quiz, a pub lunch, a Christmaslunch, two lunches at Bury College and a guided tour of the Fusiliers Museum whichincluded a cream tea in the caf.

The Bury Group is part of a national organisation and we are still very muchdependent on our parent body, the Civil Service Retirement Fellowship (CSRF) fortheir generous financial support towards our on going running costs. With thatassistance we are looking forward to another successful year at the Mosses, which hasbeen our home since its opening in the early 1970s.

HARD OF HEARING SUPPORT GROUPThe Hard of Hearing Support Group meets on Monday mornings from 10 to 12 andoffers members a lively and enjoyable start to the week. Each class begins with Dianetelling us a story without voice. This helps us develop our lip-reading skills but alsoinforms us about interesting things, whether it be Faberge Eggs, the numerous (andfrankly unbelievable) uses of cucumbers, or the Golden Washroom. To keep our littlegrey cells active we are later tested on what we have learnt. We also practise finger-spelling and some BSL signs, plus speech movements, learning to hear with the eyesand tips for communication in different situations. Together these help us to becomemore confident in a social setting. At the time of writing we are looking forward to

consolidating our skills by way of a visit to Towneley Hall near Burnley.

    SOLIDARITY

Bury committee in solidarity with asylum seekers and refugees

OUR AIM: To offer a regular social event in which anyone seeking refuge will feelbefriended and welcomed by local people. We have held 99 monthly events sincewe began in 2003. In the past 12 months we have been funded by a combination ofmoney from Bury MBC via the Manchester Community Foundation and the cosmeticfirm Lush. We regularly have 20 volunteers, with new members joining us to help withthe work of running the Socials.

Over the past 12 months we have welcomed at least 100 members to each social. These have been some guests who have been coming for the past 8 years, happy tomake a date to meet friends and enjoy the happy atmosphere, but also newcomerswho are welcomed and encouraged to make friends and get support from thewell established community of refugees we now support. The benefit of offering apredictable, regular event each month is clear. Members come from many differentcultures, countries and religions but all enjoy the chanceto celebrate and relax with their friends. All find a welcome at the Mosses Centre and

may become weekly members as a result of the kindness from staff and volunteers.

At each social we have a room with second hand clothes, toys and household goodswhich are always appreciated.

3 Babies have been born to members this year and 2 more are expected soon.In addition many members, who have been terrified that they will be deported, have been granted the right to stay. We are so relieved for them and celebratetheir courage. The members who received the good news some years ago are nowapplying for British Citizenship. This costs a lot and needs great determination, buthas been granted to all who have applied so far. As a result many members have

British Passports and are able to travel with their children to meet their extendedfamily, to make contact at last with the friends they left when they fled, or are simplyfree to go on holiday.

Some of our regular members suffered a lot this year from their experiences as asylumseekers, and still live in fear of being returned to life threatening circumstances andour members support each other in this situation. However, we have great concernsthat some will become destitute and homeless, especially if they are single. Friendsof Solidarity was set up as a Bank account to be used to support the first family madedestitute by the Governments rules. They are now happily settled in London as BritishCitizens, and so our money is used to support anyone else in this terrible situation. We have enough money each week to support 2 individual homeless members,

but in fact we have 6 members who have been refused and made homeless andwithout support. At present we are dependent on donations people give to us forthis purpose and so these 6 members know they can come to the Mosses each weekand get a warm welcome, a food parcel, courtesy of Porch, and some cash to usefor necessary expenses. We are planning to continue with our socials on the secondSaturday of each month, other than August. Thanks to the Mosses staff for all theirhelp.

    WOMENS AID GROUP

The Womens Aid Group was formed in March 2008 as a result of the ending ofBury Womens Aid. We are a group of women who meet every Monday morning atthe Mosses centre to befriend each other and offer support and help to any womanwho joins us. We are all ages and ethnic origins, and enjoy finding out about ourdifferences and similarities. We pay for our children to attend the Mosses Pre schoolcare so our members and the women who attend the English Class, get a break.

The group is very warm and caring of its members and welcomes new women all thetime. During this year two of our members have been made homeless and we havebeen able to support them with cash each week so that they can live with friends andbe able to pay for some of their needs.

The Womens Aid Group not only meets regularly but also organises events and socialactivities for members and their families and takes part in trips and events organisedby other groups at the Mosses Centre.

This year we have been lucky to be invited to join a Trip to Blackpool Sandcastle

Water Park, Southport in the summer and to the Pantomime in Bolton in January2012. In the February school holidays we enjoyed a trip to Boomerang Play centreand to the Leisure centre where we had fun dancing Zumba.
