    Dear Taylors Hill Community,

    Jeans for Genes day Article

    Last year our Junior School Council did an amazing job organising a Jeans for Genes day fundraiser. This fundraiser helps raise money for the Children’s Medical Research Institute by encouraging people to wear jeans to school or work. As a result, this week THPS was acknowledged as one of the top 10 school in the state for the most money raised and the Star Weekly Newspaper recognised our school for this achievement. Please see the article below and thank you for your support.

  • STUDENT ABSENCES All Victorian Government schools will be required to contact parents/guardians as soon as practicable when a student absence is unexplained. This update to guidelines regarding student absence will help ensure the safety of school-aged children during school hours. In order to assist us in adhering to these new guidelines, we ask that our parents and guardians ensure that any student absence is communicated to the school preferably via Compass as soon as possible once it is confirmed that your child will not be attending school. If you do not enter your absence via Compass and it comes up as unexplained then notes will be sent home for you to provide an explanation for the absence.

    School Photos

    As you know on Wednesday we had our school photos. Thank you to everyone for being organised and looking your best. For those families who ordered photos, the expected delivery date for these is 6-8 weeks. If you have any questions about school photos please contact the photo company directly and they will be able to assist you.

  • Strategies for helping with Speaking and Listening

    An important part of our Literacy curriculum is ‘Speaking and Listening’ and these skills need to be strategically taught and practiced. To support your child’s learning, have a go at the following strategies in your daily interaction with your child:

    * Ask open-ended questions

    Ask questions that require more than one word answers.

    Use How? When? Why? to begin questions. Effective question starters:

    • How will you draw a new front cover for that book?

    • What happened after …?

    • How did …?

    • Tell me about …

    • How many ways can …?

    • What would you say if …?

    • Why is …?

    • How did you feel when …?

    * Pause, wait for answers

    Wait a few moments for thinking time before expecting an answer.

    * Give prompts

    Give a hint or lead to encourage a response. Resist the temptation to answer your own question.

    * Rephrase while supporting the attempt

    Provide the correct language structure for the child by accepting and then rephrasing what is said. Eg. Child: ‘What I do next?’ Adult: ‘What can you do next? Let’s read the instructions together to see what’s next.’

    * Be an active listener

    Show how to be an active listener by looking at the person who is speaking, listening without interrupting, nod, smile and use facial expressions where appropriate to encourage the speaker and demonstrate that you are listening.

    * Offer praise

    Use a variety of encouraging words and phrases to support children with their attempts.

    ‘I like the way you …’ ‘That’s great!’ ‘Well done.’ ‘Terrific effort.’

    Engaging in meaningful conversations with your child is one of the best learning experiences they can have. While developing their speaking and listening, it also strengthens their social learning and emotional connections.

    Thank you for working in partnership with us to build strong learning behaviours for our students.

    Enjoy your conversations!

  • Dear THPS Community,

    We have many wellbeing events in the coming weeks and important dates to remember. We value your support in discussing with your chid the importance of being respectful and getting along with others.

    13th March Parent Cyber Safety Night

    15TH March National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence (NDA)

    21st March Harmony Day

    22nd March National Ride 2 School Day

    National Day of Action THPS has registered again to promote and take part in National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence. The theme for the 2019 NDA is Bullying. No Way! Take action every day. This campaign gives our students the chance to take action and empower them to voice and practice our school values by using our values as part of the solution when addressing bullying in our school community. It provides an opportunity to focus on bullying and the big changes we can make to create safer communities for everyone. Harmony Day

    Harmony Week 17th – 23rd March celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity. It’s all about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. The theme this year is ‘everyone belongs’ a message we support at THPS every day, appreciating our culturally diverse community. To celebrate Harmony day we will be encouraging everyone to wear something orange (piece/item of clothing). All of our students, teachers and educational support staff will come together at lunch for a whole school picnic on the oval.

    National Ride to School Day With a focus on building a healthy and active school community we are encouraging as many students and families to come to school by walking, riding bicycles, scooters or skates safely on Friday Morning, 22nd of March 2019.

    CSPSSA On the 28th of February some selected Grade 5 and 6 students headed to Melton Waves to compete in the Caroline Spring’s Primary School Sport Association (CSPSSA) swimming inter-school sports. Taylors Hill had fourteen students represent our school across a number of events and had some outstanding results. Mason (6E) finished 1st in his heat for freestyle, Nathan (6A) and Jett (5E) finished 1st and 2nd in their heat in backstroke and Ethan (6C) finished 3rd in his heat for breaststroke. Nathan who finished 2nd overall in Butterfly, will now represent Taylors Hill and the CSPSSA in the next division, what an immense effort. We are so proud of all our swimming team members who demonstrated great sportsmanship and showed their personal best throughout the day.

    Our next inter-school sport will be cross country. In the coming weeks, we will begin our preparations in selecting our team who will represent THPS and compete during term 2.
