    HSS Group of Companies

would like to take this opportunity

to wish all our readers a

    Fruitful, Peaceful &

    Meaningful 2006!

As I write this, there are many uncer-

tainties in the coming year. Yet I would

like to look forward with hope and come

with new dimensions to accommodate the

    changes the year promises.

Last year the Government dipped into its

goody bag and announced RM2.4bil worth

of construction projects serving as a pre-

cursor to the 9th Malaysia Plan (9MP).

This was a timely provision of renewedhope to us facing an ailing construction

    sector.

Now, we are looking with hope and prom-

ise for, the Ninth Malaysia Plan to be an-

nounced next month. Question is will 9MP

    really revive the construction industry?

Hopefully there will be announcements of

    more higher-valued and specialised jobs,

    including water, waste management and

    railway projects, that will augur

    well for us.

It may prove to be a shot in the arm, but

we have to wait and see. Fortunately for

HSS we had a change of strategic vision

over the last few years and combined it

with overseas venture. We dared to look

beyond Malaysia and had some measure

    of success overseas.

Change is the lifeblood of our industry, and

our modern society. Managing change is

the biggest challenge facing any industry.

We realized we cannot expect to achieve

new goals or move beyond our present

    circumstances unless we change.

Overseas projects have been a recent

hallmark of the construction industry. One

of our most exciting destinations for us has

been India but it has not been that simple.Middle east especially United Arab Emir-

    ates looks promising.

But this route has not been easy. We are

still getting used to the teething problems

such as competitive bidding, cost overruns,

and adjusting to the local political and eco-

    nomic climate.

    Locally, despite a well-documented dearth

of mega projects, we still look forward to

an upward shift in scale, from predomi-

nantly small-scale projects to a combina-

tion of small-scale and mid-sized projects.

As for now, it is up to us to modify our

dreams or magnify our skills. We prefer

to do the latter with your support. And like

Mahatma Gandhi said, We must be the

change we wish to see in the world.

    Newsflash...

t is observed that retrogressive riverbed degradation of Sg. Semenyih has occurred since early 1990s with the

result of significant scouring at the substructure of KTMB Bridge No. 1104 and KTMB Bridge No. 1068. KTMB Bridge No.

1104 is located at N320300/E421800 across Sg. Semenyih, whereas Bridge No. 1068 is located at N330900/E421400

across Sg. Langat, both in the District of Hulu Langat, Selangor.

In view of the above, Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) has appointed HSS Integrated Sdn Bhd (HSSI) to

undertake the consultancy services for Remedial Work on Substructures and River Bank Protection of Bridges No.

1104 and 1068 near Bangi and Kajang stations. The scope of works includes engineering survey, soil investigation,

hydrology and hydraulic analysis, preliminary engineering design, detailed design, contract documentation and site

    supervision.

The official signing ceremony between KTMB and HSSI was held on 6th December 2005. The Managing Director of KTMB,

Dato Mohd Salleh Abdullah and Datuk Ir. Kuna Sittampalam (HSSI) signed the agreement which was witnessed by the

key representatives from both companies. The total project cost for the both bridges is RM4.2 million and the construc-

tion is expected to be completed by July 2006.

    Completed Projects...

The successful completion of theupgrading of Federal Route 98in August 2003 has provided a safe,

    efficient and comfortable road be-

tween the towns of Temerloh to

Jerantut in the state of Pahang Darul

Makmur. The upgrading work of the

    55km road was undertaken by

Perkasa Sutera Sdn Bhd, as the turn-

    key contractor for Jabatan Kerja

Raya, Malaysia under a deferred pay-

ment scheme. HSSI was the De-

    tailed Design Consultant for the

    Project.

The upgrading work was divided into

    two sections, namely :

Section 1A : Temerloh to Kuala

Kurau of a length of 25 km,

    and

Section 1B : Kuala Kurau to Jerantut

    of 30 km length.

The road was upgraded from a JKR

    R3 standard to a two-lane single car-

riageway designed to JKR R5 stan-

dards with a design speed of 80 km/

    hr. The alignment traverses along

rural settings, passing by several vil-

    lages, schools and mosques. The

quaint town of Kuala Kurau is located

    mid-way of the alignment.

Five river bridges across Sg. Ketam,

Sg. Tekal, Sg. Kiol, Sg. Mai, and Sg.

Chengal form part of the works. The

    bridge structures are of prestressed

    concrete T-beam type, with foun-

    dation consisting of 700mm-diameter

    reinforced concrete bored piles. A

deck width of 15.9m caters for four-

lane traffic. The bridge approachesare on piled embankment with RE

    walls introduced to optimize the

width of piled embankment and lim-

    iting encroachment into rivers. The

ground treatment work for the road

    formation involves excavation of soft

    material and replacement with se-

    lected suitable fill. Utility relocation

was also carried out and all the junc-

tions along the alignment were pro-

    vided with street lighting.

The upgrading work has been timely

as the road had been operating at

almost full capacity with the post-

    construction traffic volume at an

    average of 5000 to 8000 vehicles/

day with motorcycles comprising20% of the traffic composition. The

    completion of the upgrading works,

    apart from relieving traffic conges-

tion, is aimed to spur development

along this corridor as well as to

boost tourism as Jerantut is the

nearest town to the world re-

    nowned Taman Negara (National

    Park).

    The on-going development of

    Westport marked another milestone

lately with the completion and com-

mission of liquid bulk terminal no. 4

(LBT 4) with a central working plat-

    form measuring 101m x 27m. LBT 4

    has 4 mooring dolphins (14.5m X 14m)

which are linked to the platform by

    four bridges with spans averaging

22m. The central platform is linked to

the shoreline by an access bridge mea-

    suring 301m x 14m. The central plat-

form and mooring dolphins are of re-

inforced concrete while the access and

    link bridges consist of prestressed

    concrete beams with reinforced con-

    crete deck slab.

The terminal is designed for vessel with

    a maximum displacement weight of

130,000 tonnes with a draught of

    15m.

    Completed in February 2004 after a 10

    month construction period, the berth

    boasts a state-of-the-art fire-fighting

systems inclusive of foam towers and

    a platform mounted high-velocity wa-

ter hose. In addition, it is the only

berth in Westport mounted with a la-

ser vessel docking system for accurate

manoeuvring and docking of the incom-

ing ships. The berth now serves ma-

jor clients for Westport such as Caltexand Petronas.

hh finally, I heaved a sign of re-

    lief.

After months of organizing and prepa-

ration by the committee and myself,

the HSS Company Trip 2005 to

Pangkor Island was finally around the

corner and boy oh boy were we all

excited!! The mood in the office was

    buzzing with excitement.

Around 80 of us boarded the bus with

much anticipation and with a quick

stopover in Teluk Intan, we boarded

the ferry to Pangkor Island Beach Re-

sort, our home for the next three

days! With the sky so blue and

gentle wind blowing, I thought to

myself, This feels like the beginning

    of a wonderful holiday.

Lunch awaited us at Hornbill Restau-

rant upon our arrival at the hotel.

Checking into our respective rooms, I

was surprised to discover that my

room was spacious and had an awe-

some view of the sea. And hey!! Just

    ask anyone about the bathroom,

youd get a better response! :)

A quick rest to recharge our batteries,

and it was time to hit the beach for

the telematches. Splited into 5 teams

identified by colours; dares and chal-

    lenges were being thrown about

amongst the various teams, many of

which came dressed in similar colours.

    Talk about team spirit!! The

    telematches were simple games that

require very little strategies but a

helluva lot of teamwork!! I was with

team Red and we came in a very re-

    spectable last!! But we

    definitely had the most

    fun!!! Needless to say,

    Team All Blacks demol-

    ished the opposition in

    quite similar fashion as

    the rugby team from NZ!

    After the games, most of

us just relaxed and enjoyed the hotel

facilities, while others went beach jog-

ging, played beach volleyball and sight

    seeing.

Dinner at the Pacific Ballroom was a

feast of BBQ and seafood! And after

such a hectic and tiring evening, we

all dug in!! Following the hearty meal

was no other than some entertain-

ment ~ dancing and karaoke singing!

Being the President, I was invited tobelt out the first number, along with

my backup singer / dancer Stanley.

Needless to say I shall not be partici-

    pating in any upcoming Malaysian

    Idols!!!!

On the second day, most of us indulged

in our own activities, which included

jet skiing, (Yoges went twice! and

    seemed to be thoroughly exhilarated

    from the experi-

    ence) kayaking or

    just lazing by the

    beach or the pool

    (which was

    equipped with a

    bar!) No second-

    guessing was

    needed as to

where I spent most of my time :)

A tour around the island was organized

after lunch to visit various interesting

sites such as the Dutch Tomb and

Hindu / Buddhist temples plus stop-

overs for everyone to do some shop-

ping for souvenirs, trinkets and dried

    products.

Finally, all good things must come to an end...It was time to head back to

KL and leave this tropical paradise. However, many stories and fond memo-

ries of Pangkor Island were shared, which till today still popped up in our

conversations!! It was truly a relaxing holiday, but what was more grati-

fying for me was the fact that several people congratulated me on a job

well done. Indeed, all the preparations by the committee had not gone

unnoticed and thats what made the event all the more memorable. On

this note, I would like to thank the committee for making this trip a rous-

ing success! Without a doubt, I had a whale of a time!!!

Once again this year, HSSSports Club organized a

    five-a-side futsal tourna-

    ment. Held on the 17th

    September, 2005 at Soc-

    cer XL, Segambut from

    8.00 am until 1.00pm, the

    event received tremen-

    dous response from the

    Titans (SPD & BDU Depart-

    ment), Champs (Structure &

    Bridge Department), Infra-

    structure Department, High-

    way Department and Dedi-

The Titans won the event by

    beating Champs with a 4-2

score. Congratulations to all players for a good ef-

fort, especially Anand Shavanandan who scored four

    goals for The Titans.

In conjunction with Bulan Ramadhan Al-Mubarak, the Management of HSS Engineering Sdn Bhd organised a Buka

Puasa for all muslim staff at Kelana Seafood, Cheras on Friday, 21 st October, 2005 starting from 6.30pm until 9pm.

At the chime of 7pm sharp, formalities were rapidly observed while serious discussions were pushed aside for the

buka puasa chow. The annual celebration is one of HSS many ways of gathering all staff from various faiths together

    to celebrate and socialise informally.

Halcrow invited HSSI to a friendly futsal match on the

23rd November 2005 at the Futsal Center Section 19,

Petaling Jaya. The game was played in four quarters of

10 minutes each. Once again, HSSI claimed their victory

    with an impressive 8-5 win.

The trick was a do or die prep talk by HSSI Team Man-

    ager, Aziz Salleh!

Within the first minute, HSSI through Mohan beat Reuben(Halcrow) from the spot after Rob Davies (Halcrow) handled

Raja Andis cross in the box. The second goal came just

two minutes into play after a superb one two between

Raja Andi and Naza, where Raja Andi confidently side

footed the ball home. Throughout the first quarter, HSSI

    kept Halcrow at bay. With

    30 seconds left on the

    clock, Rob Davies with a

    long-range effort slotted

    home a long overduegoal.

Mohan slotted his second goal from the spot in the second

minute of the second quarter. Five minutes into the second

quarter, Sabri slotted a long-range effort home while Fauzi

replaced Yoga. Halcrow scored one late goal making the

final score of the second quarter 4-2 in favour of HSSI.

In the third quarter, HSSI lost concentration, which allowed

Halcrow even the score with two early goals. Captain Naza

rectified the situation by scoring a superb long-range goal

with forty-five seconds left on the clock, giving HSSI a 5-4

    lead.

As confidence grew back, HSSI showed superb sleek move-

ments in the final quarter. Aziz Din slotted a goal within the

first minute. Rob Davies pulled one back midway through

making it 6-5, in favour of HSSI. Michael Owen Yoga eased

the pressure with two late goals.

Engineering provides an ever changing spectrum of challenges and opportunities. It is extremely vital that all engi-

neers be committed to their own Continuing Professional Development (CPD) so that they could face these challengesand at the same time develop the skills and knowledge base of themselves.

The CPD objective for Professional Engineer (PE) is the maintenance of technical knowledge and skill (i.e. competency)

to do a job. At the same time to require all engineers to stay abreast of new engineering development in their field and

    changes in codes and regulations.

On 16th December 2005, HSS organized an in-house awareness talk for all their PEs. Ir. P.Vimalanathan and Ir. Chen

Wai Peng gave respective presentations as part of their on-going professional self development to uphold the policy

objectives set by Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM).

The topics covered included, the importance and various activities of CPD and how to acquire CPD points.
