CHAIRMAN’S REPORT for the year ending 30 June 2014The seventeenth year of work proved to be one of our busiest yet with 34,516 children receivingthe gift of a personal Bible in 504 Primary Schools throughout the United Kingdom, bringing thetotal number of Bibles given to children since the charity was established in July 1997 to 392,975.

It was an important year in the life of the charity as the Trustees made major decisions to ensurethe on-going work of Bibles for Children for years to come. These included the appointment ofan additional Trustee to the Board – Peter Godfrey, and the part-time paid appointments of aCharity Administrator and Treasurer. These were the first paid appointments to be made as allthe Trustees and the Secretary still give of their time free of charge.

The work continued to grow in many areas of the country especially in Wales, where more than8,000 Welsh speaking boys and girls have now been given a copy of the charity’s Children’sBible in the Welsh language – Beibl y Plant. A copy of Beibl y Plant is to be placed in theExhibition Area of the Bible Society Visitor Centre at Mary Jones World which is scheduled to beopened in October 2014 at Llanycil on the edge of Lake Bala in North Wales. Full informationcan be found on the Bible Society website.

The North West of England also saw increased activity with gifts of Bibles to children in schoolsin Liverpool, Manchester, Burnley, Blackburn with Darwen, Wigan and the Wirral. A special projectto help schools in Scotland was begun and as a result, children in a number of schools in theNorth West of Scotland have benefited, especially in the Isles of Arran, Lewis and Mull and theHighland District. This project has received some financial support from the Free Churches ofScotland for which we are very grateful.

The accompanying map on page three indicates the regions of the United Kingdom where thecharity has been active, the number of schools helped in those regions and the number of Biblesgiven to children. The work has now extended to 133 out of the 212 Local Educational Areas inthe United Kingdom and almost every county in England has seen some activity.

The charity continues to form links with many churches of all denominations and their localschools in support of the work, especially in connection with the charity’s “Follow-on” scheme(see page 8). During the year, schools taking advantage of the “Follow-on” scheme, were eachpresented by Bibles for Children with a free copy of “Mary Jones and Her Bible” published bythe Bible Society.

It is gratifying to be able to report an increase in the charity’s annual income, indicating the wayin which regular and new supporters view the importance of the vital work of bringing the GoodNews of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to young hearts and minds. We are very grateful for this supportwhich we pray will continue. I wish to express my thanks, and that of the Trustees, to all thosewho have helped in the growth of Bibles for Children over the years. The accounts have beenprepared on the accruals basis and independently examined by Bishop Fleming LLP, CharteredAccountants.

ORIGIN AND OBJECT OF THE CHARITYBibles for Children was founded by Ted Hudson in July 1997, and established by a charitable trust deed.It was registered with the Charity Commissioners of England and Wales as Charity Number 1063200 andin Scotland as Charity Number SC037757 with the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator.

The object of the charity is to advance the understanding of the Christian Faith through the provision ofChildren’s Bibles and Bible related materials to children in Primary Schools.

How the Charity operatesWhen a gift of Bibles is made, every boy and girl in Years 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 (7 in Scotland) in the schoolreceives one of the Bibles detailed on page 4. A special presentation label with the child’s name and thename of the school is placed in each Bible. We also send one additional free copy for each class teacher.

The Bibles belong to the children. We anticipate that they will leave them in school to be used in R.E.lessons and reading time, but taken home when not in use and when they leave. The Children’s Bible, which is very ‘user-friendly’, is used in many schools during the “Literacy Hour”.

The Bibles given at the initial presentation are free but due to the high cost of carriage, there is a part-carriage charge of £15 for up to 50 Bibles, or £25 for the first 100 Bibles plus a further £15 for each additional 50 or part thereof.

Presentations usually take place at a school assembly with the presentation being made by a school orchurch representative and requests for Bibles can be made by completing the Application Form sent withour Information Pack on request by phone, post, e-mail or fax. In the years following the initial presentation,we encourage schools to adopt our ‘follow-on’ scheme which is described below.

FOLLOW-ON SCHEMEOnce a presentation has been made, the Trustees feel that it is very important that children moving intoYear 2 have their own Bible, and also, that each child leaving the school from Year 6 (Year 7 in Scotland)is equipped for life with a complete Bible.

Provisions of the follow-on schemeIf a school, which has had a first free presentation, can provide support for Bibles for Children or findsponsorship to an amount of £5.85 per child, the charity will be pleased to provide copies of ‘TheChildren’s Bible’ for all new Year 2 pupils and the complete ‘Rainbow Good News Bible’ for all pupils inYear 6 (Years 6 and 7 in Scotland). They are delivered to the school with no additional carriage charges. The Children’s Bible has a recommended retail price of £12.99 and the Rainbow Good News Bible£15.99, so the scheme represents a considerable saving. The Welsh edition of The Children’s Bible, Beibly Plant, is available as an alternative and variations can be made to suit individual schools.

Some suggestions for obtaining support for the follow-on schemeAppeal to one of the following:

1. A local church organisation such as a Church Council or one of the many Churches TogetherGroups. (Many schools which have adopted the follow-on scheme work with the local churchcommunity which can provide funding and thus forge a link between school and church).

2. A locally based charitable organisation.

3. A local business.

4. The school P.T.A. for direct funding or for them to arrange a special fund-raising event. (We findthat parents are often very supportive of the scheme).

Independent Examiner’s Report to the Trustees of Bibles for ChildrenI report on the accounts of the charity for the year ended 30 June 2014 which are set out in the annual report.

Respective responsibilities of trustees and examinerThe charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity's trustees consider that an audit is not required for thisyear under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) or under Regulation 10(1)(a) to (c) of the Charities Accounts (Scotland)Regulations 2006 (the 2006 Regulations) and that an independent examination is needed. The charity prepares accrued accounts and I am qual-ified to undertake the examination by being a qualified member of Institute of Chartered Accounts in England and Wales.

It is my responsibility to: • examine the accounts under section 145 of the Charities Act 2011 and under section 44(1)(c) of the Charities and Trustee Investment

(Scotland) Act 2005 (the 2005 Act);• to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act;

and• to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

Basis of independent examiner's report My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission and is in accordance with Regulation11 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity anda comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence thatwould be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a 'true and fair view' and the report islimited to those matters set out in the statement below.

Independent examiner's statement In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention: (1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements: • to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the 2011 Act and section 44 (1)(a) of the 2005 Act and Regulation 4 of the

2006 Accounts Regulations; and • to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the 2011 Act and

section 44(1)(b) of the 2005 Act and Regulation 8 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations have not been met; or

(2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
