    ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIPS

    BE REWARDED FOR

HAVE YOU GOT OUTSTANDING RESULTSIN VCE OR EQUIVALENT, TAFE OR UNIVERSITY?

In 2012, mother of two, Jolanta Larmane, successfully applied for the George Alexander

Foundation Scholarship, which recognised her academic ability, leadership potential and passionfor community involvement. The scholarship enabled her to pursue a three-year Bachelor of

Applied Science (Nursing) program at RMIT.

It has boosted my confidence a lot and its a great blessing, Jolanta says. I cant work because

Im a single mum. Im studying full time and all my weekends go. Id have had to drop out of uni.

Jolanta is heavily involved in the Latvian community, a factor that contributed to her winning this

academic achievement scholarship. Its all volunteer work, she says. Ive been teaching at the

Latvian school since 2005. I started teaching kindergarten and a preschool group on Saturdays

and, the last three years, Latvian folklore and music. In 2010 I coordinated the choir concert at the

    Latvian arts festival.

[This RMIT scholarship is] proof that you can succeed ... If you study hard and do as best you can itwill be valued by others, Jolanta says. [It] suited me because of my community leadership and my

academic achievement. I think future opportunities are wider now that Ive won the scholarship. Its

been proven already that I can succeed and I hope and believe it will continue with my career.

    GENERAL EQUITY SCHOLARSHIPS

Before applying to study an Associate Degree in Fashion Design and Technology at RMIT, Georginawas living at home in Tasmania, undertaking a diploma. At home I worked two casual jobs and

helped on the family farm as well as studying. Tasmania is a beautiful place to live but for a career in

fashion, I felt that I needed to move interstate, Georgina says.

My scholarship money means Ill have time to be creative, to process my thoughts and to put more

into what I really want to achieve. Fashion students can enter a range of creative garment exhibitions

and competitions locally and nationally. Im really interested in being part of those and creating

bespoke garments but without the scholarship I wouldnt have the time or the money for materials.

Also, students in our program are encouraged to apply for industry internships, she adds, referring

to RMITs focus on producing graduates who are ready to work as soon as they finish their program.

Without my scholarship money Id have to spend my time working instead.

    OPEN THEDOOR TO

SUCCESSThe accommodation scholarship really helped because I moved from Brisbane to Melbourne tostudy at RMIT. It took the financial stress away from trying to find a house and getting the bond,

    having moved to another city.

I was able to buy things for the house, feel comfortable, and start at a new university, feeling as

though Ive got my roots down in Melbourne. It really made me settle in a lot easier. I also received

the Study Support Scholarship, which helped me buy stationery and a desk, and stuff like that.

It also took away the worry of having to have a part-time job. Since I was 15 I had a part-time job,

and it did impact on my studies because I was working weekends and nights. Now Im able to

study, and prepare for labs and tutorials. I got all high distinctions this semesterthat wouldnt

have happened if I didnt have the scholarship. Its the best marks Ive ever got. Just having the

    scholarship, it was amazing.

Why RMIT? Mainly the work experience aspect of my degree. They have a lot of hands-on,

real-world examples, so you feel more prepared. As soon as I looked at the RMIT website

[for the first time], it was like, This is what I want. The scholarships were icing on the cake, really.

    GET AGLOBAL

PASSPORTI received the RMIT Equity Travel Grant and Ive also received the Study Support

Scholarship. I applied for the grant to help fund my trip to Europe. Im going for a

study tour in Brest for two weeks in winter.

I really wanted to go overseas because Ive never been outside of Australia before

but I also wanted to incorporate it into my studies as well. A study tour is a little taste

of overseas; it wasnt going to be six months that Id be over there.

I grew up in a small country town, just outside of Ballarat, so Ive never really

experienced so much of what the world has to offer. Ive loved moving down to

Melbourne, because its opened my eyes to so much culture and so many things I

wouldnt have seen if I was living where I was living. Its nice to know theres so much

more out there and so much more to experience as well.

The study tour Im going on is run by the Economics and Finance section of the

School of Business, which ties in very well with my degree. My major is finance and

economics, and that is quite a global field. I thought it would just be wonderful, when

I do end up graduating, to say that I have an understanding of economicsnot just in

Australia, but across the world as well.

I was awarded the APA scholarship in 2011. Before this I was working as a

researcher in my home country, in Malaysia. Its a big dream for me to pursue

a PhD overseas. If I didnt get the scholarship, I couldnt pursue my study here.

At RMIT, I have [gained] a lot of knowledge in research, especially in my area, solar

cell and nano-material. RMIT is one of the universities that provide a good platform

to do research, especially in my area. So theres a lot of expertise, and complete

facilities for me to do the research.

I hope I can be an expert scientist in the solar cell area, because nowadays energy is

very important in our life. So solar cell may be one of the technologies to provide that

energy. Its green energy, green technology and I hope I can contribute a valuable

invention to the solar cell society.

Williamss bachelor degree has an industry work experience requirement, and this

scholarship assisted the facilitation of this and more.

My industry placement definitely adds to my resume and it means Ill be able to talk

about my experiences at SEW-EURODRIVE in job interviews. I hope to start off as an

electrical engineer then work my way up into project management. Because of the

scholarship and the workplace experience Ive gained I think Ive got a better chance

    of getting a graduate job.

If I had not applied for a scholarship I would have missed out on experiences at

SEW. The placement was a lot more valuable than the money. It was real hands on

experience with actual technical aspects of actual projects.

I think scholarships are valuable because, apart from financial aid, they give you theextra motivation to achieve high, to strive for a goal. You feel like you have to perform

to get a scholarship then live up to it.

RMIT has a wide range of discipline based scholarships. Who knows? Like William

your employability may hugely increase even before you finish your degree.

    WILLIAM DIXON

BACHELOR OF ENGINEERING (ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING) /

    BACHELOR OF BUSINESS (MANAGEMENT)

Scholarships for specific study areas have the ability to enhance your

educational experience and employability in the work force for when

you complete your program. Like William, here, being granted a SEW-

EURODRIVE Scholarship helped drive his education pursuits.
