Thinking develops thoughts, thoughts create hopeand understanding, and actions produce results of loveand service to others. These are mighty gifts bestowedon you and expectations abound from those who knowand love you. However, getting hung up with thoughtsthat are blocked by low confidence or fear removeunderstanding and hope, preventing needed actions.Wasting away is a tremendous loss for you and others.Review your information, expand your understanding, and join the ranks of “risk takers.” This grows confi-dence no matter your age and allows you to keep on,keeping on.

from the Texas Department of TransportationTxDOT Urges Drivers to “Look Twice forMotorcycles” to Help Save Lives and PreventCrashes

As spring weather draws more motorcyclists ontoroadways the risk of fatalities increases. Last year 417motorcyclists died on Texas roadways, an average ofmore than one fatality a day. It’s a number the TexasDepartment of Transportation is working to reduce byasking motorists to be extra vigilant. TxDOT is launching “Share the Road: Look Twicefor Motorcycles” – a campaign supporting NationalMotorcycle Safety Awareness Month this May. “Sharethe Road: Look Twice for Motorcycles” urges driversto be extra cautious, since motorcyclists are more diffi-cult to see and less protected than other motorists. “Last year motorcycle fatalities were reduced by 17percent, which is a big step forward; still one death istoo many for the Lone Star State,” said TxDOTExecutive Director James Bass. ”As motorcyclists hitthe road to enjoy the open air and beautiful scenery, it’simportant that vehicle drivers and motorcyclists remainalert and look out for each other on the road. We wanteveryone to enjoy what Texas offers and reach theirdestinations safely,” One of the most common crashes between motor-cyclists and drivers occurs when drivers make left turnsat intersections, due to motorists’ difficulty judging thedistance and speed of motorcycles. TxDOT cautionsdrivers to be extra vigilant when approaching, turning,or driving through an intersection, as 30 percent ofTexas motorcycle deaths in 2018 were intersection-related. A motorcyclist’s “braking” is not always obvious to

motorists. Motorcycles decelerate faster than vehiclesand motorcyclists can often downshift instead of apply-ing the brake, especially when driving around a curve. This means at times brake lights will not be engaged tosignal the motorcycle is slowing down. It is importantfor motorists to allow for extra distance when they arebehind motorcycles. TxDOT is urging motorists to: • Look twice for motorcycles, especially at inter-sections. • Always assume motorcycles are closer than theyappear to be, and avoid turning in front of an oncomingmotorcycle. • Use turn signals and check blind spots beforechanging lanes. • Always maintain a safe following distance. • Give motorcyclists a full lane, especially whenpassing. • Obey posted speed limits. “Share the Road: Look Twice for Motorcycles” is akey component of #EndTheStreakTX, a larger grass-roots effort that encourages drivers to make safer choic-es while on the road. Since November 8, 2000, at leastone person has died on Texas roadways every singleday, and that’s why #EndTheStreakTX asks all Texansto commit to helping end the streak of daily deaths onour roadways. Suburban Newspapers, Inc. publishes theBenbrook News, River Oaks News and WhiteSettlement Bomber News every Thursday anddelivers them to homes and advertisers in eachcommunity. Our individual publications are 80, 80 and 79years old and Suburban Newspapers was incorpo-rated in 1962. We would like to take the opportu-nity to share a bit of our history each month. Our current location, 7820 Wyatt Drive inWhite Settlement, is the last remaining buildingfrom Liberator Village. The buildings of LiberatorVillage were constructed in 1942 to serve as gov-ernment housing for approximately 6,000 employ-ees of Consolidated Aircraft Corporation next tothe Army Air Force Base. The employees built theB-24 “Liberator” heavy bomber and other aircraftduring World War II and up until the mid-1950s. The photo above shows an aerial view of thevillage taken from an airplane in the 1940s withthe “bricks” on the right and “whites” on the left.We believe the road through the center is CherryLane and our building is located third from the leftin that top row of “bricks.”
