The girls lost 35-43 to Lake CountryChristian, last year's TAPPS State Tournament winners. Jordan Rogers and Ashley Crick earned All-Tournament honors. The team's overall record is 6-3. Sandra had a beautiful smile, infectiouslaugh and good sense of humor.!She loved to cook and spendtime with her family and friends. Sandra enjoyed playingSpades online and had many online friends. She was alwayswilling to help anyone in need.!She loved her Savior JesusChrist, attending church and reading her Bible. Sandra lovedher family very much and lived her life for her grandchil-dren, whom she adored. Sandra was preceded in death by her husband, RogersConroy Sr., and son, Robert O. quiet dedication and honor throughout his 38-yearcareer. Robert Lee Howze was born in Overton, asmall community just east of Tyler, in 1864. Hewas born in the midst of the Civil War as theConfederate effort neared collapse. His father,James Howze, served as a captain in the 14thTexas Cavalry. Growing up, he was inspired byhis father’s own wartime service to seek a militarycareer of his own. Howze graduated from Hubbard College, moreof a college-preparatory school, in 1883. He wasawarded an appointment to the United StatesMilitary Academy at West Point. When he gradu-ated in 1888, he earned a commission as a lieu-tenant and was assigned to the Sixth Cavalry in theNew Mexico Territory. In 1890, the army grew concerned about thegrowth of the Ghost Dance religion at the BlackHills Indian Reservation in South Dakota and theassociated ceremonial dances. Fearing a rebellionwas about to erupt, army units across the Westwere sent to the reservation to restore order. Whatresulted was the mass shootings of unarmed civil-ians, culminating in the Wounded Knee Massacrein December 1890 in which 150 Sioux were killed. Howze and his unit were not involved in thatincident, and actions against the Sioux continued.Howze was awarded the Congressional Medal ofHonor for his actions in an engagement with agroup of Sioux in January 1891. The medalsawarded during the campaign, however, havebecome increasingly controversial since that time. By 1905, now a lieutenant colonel, Howze wasnamed commandant of cadets at West Point. Heemphasized honor and integrity as commandant.When one cadet was ostracized by his entire classfor reporting a hazing incident in 1907, Howzethreatened to expel the entire class. He would goon to serve with Gen. John Pershing’s punitiveexpedition into Mexico in 1916 against PanchoVilla. Howze was then assigned to Fort Bliss in ElPaso and promoted to brigadier general in 1917. America was being drawn into the Great Warin Europe. President Woodrow Wilson hadattempted to stay neutral in the fighting and eventried to negotiate a peace settlement since the warstarted in 1914. In 1917, after Germany threatenedto attack American ships and attempted to inciteMexico to attack the US, America declared war onGermany. Quickly, millions of men were draftedinto the service in a war to, as Wilson said, “makethe world safe for democracy.” He was given command of the 38th InfantryDivision, training as many new recruits as possiblebefore sending them to France. The fighting wasfierce. American casualties surged. He was pro-moted to major general and given command of the

Third Division in the decisive Meuse-ArgonneOffensive in October 1918. American troopsfought with great courage under Howze’s com-mand. The offensive finished off the exhaustedGermans, who asked for a cease-fire after years ofbattle and millions dead across Europe. The warofficially ended on November 11, 1918, a dayremembered afterward as Armistice Day andtoday known as Veterans Day. Howze and his forces stayed in Germany until1919 as an occupational force. Germany was inthe midst of revolution after the war, and the Alliesstayed to maintain order. He was then returned toFort Bliss.In America, Billy Mitchell, a decorated army gen-eral, saw a new war coming on the horizon andtried to warn the nation. Mitchell desperatelysought support for developing the Army Air Corpsand new aviation technology and foresaw the seri-ous deficiencies in American defenses in Hawaii.However, Mitchell’s bitter and public criticisms ofarmy preparedness and air technology develop-ment led to his demotion and reassignments to anarmy camp in San Antonio by 1925. His contin-ued criticisms led to charges of insubordinationand a court martial by early 1926. Gen. Howze presided over the board of judgeshearing the court martial of Mitchell. It would behis last major duty for the army. In the widely-publicized hearing, Mitchell was found guilty andsuspended for five years from the service. The general passed away quietly in Columbus,Ohio, in September 1926, a little more than sevenmonths after the Mitchell trial. His two sons, bothWest Point graduates themselves, would servehonorable careers in the army, both reaching therank of general. The army remembered the serv-ice of Howze and honored his memory by namingCamp Howze for him in 1941. The camp was anarmy training center near Gainesville, near the siteof the modern-day municipal airport, before itclosed in 1946. Another Camp Howze was estab-lished in South Korea before it was turned over toSouth Korean command in 2005.

Millions of Americans served in this war,some giving everything for their country, includ-ing Texans. One of the men leading Americantroops into battle was Gen. Robert Howze, acareer officer from East Texas who served with

Tannahill Intermediate fifth grade science teacher Valerie Valadez turnedher classroom into Valeria's Pizzeria as a fun way to teach students aboutweathering, erosion and deposition. After discussing slow changes to the Earth’s surface, students demon-strated their understanding by selecting from various assignments in the"menu" of appetizers, entrees and desserts. The menu included activities like creating comic strips and fictional sto-ries that described a sediment’s voyage through the weathering, erosion anddeposition process; designing an assessment using Google Docs to assess themastery of the process; and creating a video or podcast discussing theprocess and why it's important to understand how the Earth’s surface slowlychanges over time. Valadez even served pizza rolls as a little surprise to the kids.

The Texas Department of Transportation will hold a public meeting todiscuss proposed improvements to I-30 from Linkcrest Drive to I-820 inTarrant County on Dec. 5. All interested parties are invited to attend. This could impact roads in the White Settlement area. The meeting will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Covenant ClassicalSchool located at 1701 Wind Star Way in Fort Worth. The meeting will be an open house format with no formal presentationbeing held. TXDOT is looking to receive public comment on the proposed project.Some of the alternative designs they are proposing for this 3.4 mile stretchof highway is widening the freeway to six lanes instead of four, improve-ments to the I-30 and Spur 580 interchange to reduce congestion, and con-struction of continuous two-lane one-way frontage roads throughout theproject limits. Maps and drawings reflecting the proposed alternatives will be displayedat the meeting.
