From the Pastor
Last Sunday, today and the next, the gospel reading is taken from the 6th chapter of the gospel of St. John. It is interrupted on the feast of the Assumption but resumes on the Sunday after. Altogether this chapter which is titled “The Discourse on the Bread of Life” takes four Sundays. As we saw last Sunday, it started with an ordinary bread which Jesus miraculously multiplied. The miracle underscores the fact that bread is important. It is the basic need to live. Man lives by bread, it is a given. But the problem is when one gets stuck with bread and begins to believe that man lives only by bread. This is what Jesus wants the people to realize as he says to them. “You are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled. Do not look for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life.” He wants to redirect their concerns and refocus their inquiring minds. For there is a far deeper hunger than physical hunger which bread and material things can never satisfy. Jesus wants them to look beyond material food. “Man does not live only by bread but by the word that comes from the mouth of God.” And since Jesus is the ‘Word’ of God made flesh, so man lives by him. “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever comes to me will never thirst.” Jesus came to satisfy the hunger of the spirit, of the soul – the hunger for love, for truth, for justice, for relationship, the hunger to belong, to be accepted, the hunger for meaning, the hunger for God. And Jesus is this bread from heaven. But in this age of materialism and consumerism, people look somewhere else to satisfy these hungers. They look for it in success, power, fame and wealth, which the world has ‘deified.’ And so people work and spend time and energy to posses this ‘bread’, only to realize that it leaves them empty and hungry. Yes, for a while, they feel satisfied, they feel to be at the top of the world, but then emptiness and loneliness creeps in. And so arises the need for drugs, tranquilizers, sleeping pills, diversions, after which a greater feeling of frustration and emptiness follows. The cycle goes on. And many times, the end is suicide. Where is life there? Do not look for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. Your brother and friend, Father Roland A Little Tickler: One Sunday, a pastor noticed a member arrive very late during the 9:30 a.m. service. To his surprise, the member was in his seat when the 11:00 a.m. service began. But when the congregation rose to sing the hymn before the sermon, he left, explaining to the usher, “This is where I came in.”

18TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
