Hydraulic Bench Test Procedures

(Hydraulic Components)

Production and delivery methods have changed for hydraulic component bench test procedures. Test procedures produced prior to 1/1/2002 were announced in Preview and available in printed form.

Repair Process Engineering has implemented the same authoring and delivery methods that are used by the Parts and Service Information Division. This process will allow the dealer to access bench test procedures created or revised after 1/1/2002, to be delivered via the Service Information System (SIS). Bench test procedures will be produced as Special Instructions. The Special Instructions can be accessed through SIS web and SIS DVD. A subscription is also available to dealers who have needs for printed media. The subscription will allow dealers to receive new or revised test procedures automatically. Individual test procedures may still be ordered.

Repair Process - Contamination Control Guidelines

Contamination is anything that doesn't belong in machine fluid systems; paint flakes, rag fibers, metals, greases, weld spatter, sealing materials, and more. When systems are contaminated, efficiency drops, cycle times increase and component and fluid life is shortened. Eventually, contamination can lead to catastrophic failure, unplanned downtime, and costly repairs for customers. Customer demand for increased productivity has produced industry trends toward electro-hydraulics, higher system pressures and tighter internal clearances. As a result of these trends, today's fluid systems (hydraulics, transmissions, steering, power train, engines, and fuel) will not tolerate dirt and other contaminants like their predecessors. Fluid contamination threatens reliability throughout the life cycle of today's machines and engines. Therefore, Caterpillar's goal is to create a Cultural Change by educating Caterpillar Plants, Caterpillar Dealers and Caterpillar Customers to become Leaders in Contamination Control. Servicing an older Caterpillar machine population in the past was quite different than servicing today's machines. The time to invest in product reliability via Contamination Control is NOW! By addressing this very important aspect of machine operation and life cycle, you will: · Improve component life and machine productivity · Lower customer costs and increase customer satisfaction · Extend product and component life · Increase rental fleet value · Reduce Hazardous waste generation · Reduce service/repair redo A partial list of the available contamination control information for this vehicle is listed below. For a broad list of vehicle contamination control guidelines, visit your Caterpillar Subsidiary’s Contamination Control Web Site. PL321SR—Provides Machine Health Information

Beyond location and service meter hours, PL321SR has the ability to:

• Provide machine maintenance and health information to help identify repair problems before they become costly failures

• Indicate fuel level and total fuel consumption, if applicable

• Provide fault code reports and/or alerts

• Provide S.O.SSM

oil sample evaluation and/or alerts

PSeL PSeL is the Caterpillar software program that assists dealers and customers with Cat parts stocking decisions. The program helps dealers establish dealer branch store and customer inventory levels and can be used as a sales tool to demonstrate parts support. PSeL replaces Parts Consumption Lists.

PSeL Features:

• PSeL provides a parts list based on consumption rates from Repair Option Builder that reduces the effort to determine parts to inventory for NPI or machine relocations.

• PSeL displays demand minimum and maximum inventory settings for each store for easy comparison to product quantity requirements.

• PSeL provides software support for regional PC operating systems to integrate with local business system settings.

• Setup instructions are provided to assist in integrating PSeL with non-Cat dealer business systems to reduce IT configuration cost.

• Customized Microsoft Excel reporting enables configuration of the report format. • A new updated installation guide is available in English, French and Spanish versions. • PSeL reports NOW Parts for a single serial number prefix or for an entire fleet of Caterpillar products. NOW Parts

are parts that a customer expects a dealer to have in stock and immediately available. NOW Parts include maintenance parts, wear and safety items, critical parts and highly competitive parts.

PSeL will replace Parts Consumption Lists (PCLs) effective April 1, 2006. Beginning on this date, PCLs will no longer be available.

PSeL represents an improvement over PCLs in several ways:

• PSeL uses improved technology to retrieve and update product structure information in a more timely manner, improving serial number accuracy of parts lists.

• PSeL utilizes Repair Option Builder to predict the anticipated life of a part in specific applications more accurately than attrition formulas.

• PSel is available on demand. PCLs require intervention by Caterpillar staff and can take up to four days to produce.

• PSeL matches desired dealer files and provides output in Excel format. Files can be conveniently merged for customized analysis. PCLs are paper and require manual input of data into worksheets or other analytical software.

The PSeL User Manual provides installation, setup, and “how to” information in English, Spanish, and French and installs with the PSeL software. The default admin ID (PSeLAdmin) and password (psel) is established for those logging in for the first time after installation. The password can be customized after initial log-in. Hardware & Software Requirements:

• 25MB available hard drive space • 700 MHz Pentium compatible processor • 512 MB RAM • 20 GB hard disk drive with at least 350 MB hard drive space available • Microsoft Windows (2000 or XP) • IBM AS/400 Client Access Express for Windows Family, Version 4 Release 4 through Version 5 Release 3

(for communication with the dealer business system) • SIS Web Account • Microsoft Office Professional 2000 (includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access)
