These drugs may help lower your blood pres- sure, reduce the level of cholesterol in your blood, or help your body get rid of excess fluids that puts a strain on your heart’s ability to pump blood. Heart medication recommendations vary for each person. Whatever the treatment protocol prescribed to you, it is a good idea to keep the following guidelines in mind when you’re taking heart disease drugs. Educate Yourself. Know the names of your heart medica- tions and how they work. Know the generic and brand names, dosages, and side effects of the drugs. Always keep a list of your medications with you. We can print out a pocket profile of your medications for you at the pharmacy, just ask! If you have further questions, our pharmacists are happy to talk to you. Be Consistent. Take heart medications as scheduled, at the same time every day. Do not stop taking or change medica- tions unless you first talk with you doctor. Even if you feel good, continue to take your medications. Stopping these drugs suddenly can make the condition worse. Develop a Routine. Have a routine for taking heart medica- tions. Get a pillbox that is marked with the days of the week. Fill the pillbox at the beginning of each week to make it easier to remember. If you struggle with taking your medications on time, we can blister pack your medications for you (cost depends on the number of medica- tions you take). Your medications will be packed into compartments with the time of day you are to take them. Please ask us if you are inter- ested in learning more. Keep Track. Keep a medicine calendar and note every time you take a dose. The prescription label tells how much to take at each dose, but your doctor may change the dosage periodi- cally, depending on your response to the drug. On your medi- cation calendar, you can list any changes in dosages as pre- scribed by your doctor. Don’t Cut Corners. Do not decrease a drug’s dosage to save money. You must take the full amount to get the full benefits. Talk with any of our pharmacists about ways to reduce drug costs. We have a Prescription $avings Program available to our Norland Rewards members (see page three for details). Get Professional Advice. Before taking any over-the-counter drugs or herbal therapies, talk to your pharmacist or physician. Some drugs, such as antacids, salt substitutes, antihistamines (including Benadryl and Dimetapp), and non-steroidal anti- inflammatory agents (NSAIDs, such as Advil, Motrin, and Indocin), can worsen heart failure symptoms. If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, ask your doc- tor about skipping versus making up the missed dose. Norland Avenue Pharmacy offers one-on-one consulta- tions with our knowledgeable pharmacists to talk through your medications and any pos- sible drug interactions. We can also discuss what vitamins and supplements would help offset the possible drug nutrient depletions being caused by your medications. Call today to schedule your consultation. Plan Ahead. Regularly fill prescriptions and ask your phar- macist any questions you have. Do not wait until you are com- pletely out of medication before filling your prescriptions. If you have trouble getting to the pharmacy, have financial con- cerns, or have other problems that make it difficult to get your heart medications, let your pharmacist or physician know. Anyone taking multiple medications can sign-up for our FREE RxSync program. Our trained staff will synchronize all your medications to fill on the same day each month and will initi- ate your refills without you having to remember to call them in, saving you time and trips to the pharmacy. Ask any of our team members for more information. When traveling, keep medications with you so you can take them as scheduled. On long trips, take an extra week’s supply of medications and copies of your prescriptions in case you need to get a refill. Before having surgery with a general anes- thetic, including dental surgery, tell the doctor or dentist in charge what heart drugs you are taking. An antibiotic may need to be prescribed prior to a surgical or dental procedure. Be a Slow Riser. Drugs that relax constricted blood vessels may cause dizziness. If you experience dizziness when stand- ing or getting out of bed, sit or lie down for a few minutes, then get up more slowly. I hope this article is helpful for you. Right after a good multivitamin, the next thing we recommend for almost everyone is a good Omega-3 supple-

ment. Omega-3s are essential fatty acids, essential because you would die without them.

Most Americans fail to consume sufficient amounts of Omega-3 fats making Omega-3 deficiency

likely the sixth biggest cause of death in America. This deficiency can cause or contribute to serious

mental and physical health problems. Common signs that you are not getting enough Omega-3s in your

diet include…

Dry, flaky skin, alligator skin, or “chicken skin” on the backs of your arms

Lowered immunity, frequent infections

Poor attention span, hyperactivity, or irritability

Cracked skin on heals or fingertips

Frequent urination or excessive thirst

Problems learning

Science suggests that Omega-3s offer the following benefits to your health:

Healthier, stronger bones

Improved mood regulation

Reduced risk of Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases

Reduced risk of death from ALL causes

Prevention of vascular complications from Type 2 diabetes

Reducing symptoms of lupus erythematosus and other autoimmune diseases

There are so many benefits to taking Omega-3s that we recommend it to everyone. We offer several great Omega-3 supplements

to meet your needs. One of our favorites is Ocean Blue’s Omega-3 2100. This product delivers more EPA and DHA per capsule

than any other fish oil capsule available. Each capsule is formulated to eliminate the taste and smell of normal fish oil. If you

purchase a bottle of 120 softgels, adding this supplement to your regimen will cost you just 82¢ per day.

Be a Peacemaker

Proverbs 12:20 – There is deceit in the hearts of those

who plot evil, but joy for those who promote peace.

Your life and the lives of those

around you will be more joyful as

you practice being a peacemaker.

Instead of insisting that things be

your way, seek ways to bring

unity and harmony. Be a

“peacemaker” not a troublemaker.

Prescription $avings Club Last month, Shelly shared information about

our Norland Rewards program and the mobile

app. This month I would like to tell you a bit

more about a component of our Norland Rewards pro-

gram: the Prescription $avings Club.

If you are a member of our FREE Rewards program, you

are automatically eligible for special pricing on the medi-

cations in our Prescription $avings Club. There are three

pricing tiers within our Prescription $avings Club:

30/90/180/360-Day Tier I: $8.99/$12.99/$20/$38 (i.e. Metformin, Lisinopril, HCTZ)

180/360-Day Tier II: $37/$70 (i.e. Losartan, Amlodipine, Sertraline)

180/360-Day Tier III: $59/$114

(i.e. Atorvastatin, Tamsulosin)

The 30-day and 90-day supply prices are pretty straight-

forward and easy to understand. I am most excited to tell

you more about the 180-day (six months) and 360-day

(12 months) supplies. Using a combination of Medicare

Part D and our Prescription $avings Club, it’s possible to

save hundreds of dollars using these quantities.

Please note that the 180/360-day quantities are intended

for patients on maintenance doses of chronic medica-

tions. We only recommend the purchase of a six-month

or twelve-month supply if you are well controlled on the

medication prescribed.

Here’s why we started offering these quantities at dis-

counted prices:

Many of the drugs that

went generic in the last

five years are on our list

but not on Walmart’s $4

list!

For patients with no in-

surance, we are MUCH

cheaper than Walmart.

For patients on Medicare Part D, we do not send

claims to the Part D plan for any drug filled for a six or

twelve month supply.

By NOT using Medicare Part D, your donut hole

money can be saved for expensive brands.

Even if you have insurance, you may be able to save

money in comparison to your co-pays.

Due to fluctuations in medication costs, the formulary

list may be changed at any time without notice and pro-

gram prices cannot be pro-rated. You can always access

the most up-to-date list on our website under the Re-

wards link or ask for a copy while you’re at the phar-

macy. Please inquire to verify the quantity of each medi-

cation eligible for the Prescription $avings discount. If

you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate

to ask.

Our Customer Care Coordinator, Melissa, makes follow-up calls to our patients that get a pain cream made in our Compound-ing Lab. A recent patient said….

“This cream is a miracle in a jar!” If you, or someone you know, struggles with constant pain, ask us if a compounded pain cream could be the solution. If you have any questions, please call and talk to Charlie, our compounding pharmacist.

Are you taking any of these cholesterol medications: Atorvas-

tatin (Lipitor), Simvastatin (Zocor), Lovastatin (Mevacor),

Pravastatin (Pravachol), Gemfibrozil (Lopid), Ezetimibe (Zetia),

Fenofibrate (Tricor), Cholestipol (Colestid), Cholestyramine

(Questran), Crestor, Welchol, Vytorin, etc.?

These medications are known to deplete your body of coenzyme

Q10 (CoQ10), magnesium, B6, B12, and vitamin E. Because of

these nutrient depletions, you may be experiencing side effects

including muscle aches, decreased energy/fatigue, congestive

heart failure, memory loss/brain fog, liver

damage, nausea, anemia, cardiovascular dis-

ease, vision problems, dry skin/hair, and/or

easy bruising.

If you are currently taking a cholesterol

medication and experiencing any of these

side effects, you can replenish the needed

nutrients with Cholesterol Rx Support. This

formula includes CoQ10 and digestive en-

zymes for maximum absorption at just

$27.98 per month.
