Sharing our Knowledge & Upcoming Events

As the leaves begin to fall and the dust begins to settle at Allusions--we’re excited to unveil our new space and celebrate the last 10 years!

In 2002, my husband and I decided it was time for a change. At the time a dear friend was going through chemotherapy and she asked me to help her select a wig. She knew I’d helped both my mother and sister through chemotherapy, and my interest in both fashion and style. We visited Allusions, and while I had very little working knowledge of the process, I was quite impressed by the scope of their work, and the impact it had

on their clients. When we left the salon my friend was thrilled with her new look, and I was impressed by her beauty and self-confidence.

A few weeks passed, and I continued to think about Allusions. I believed I could help people through this traumatic time by blending my own real-life experience with my creativity and interest in helping people look and feel their best. To my amazement, a few weeks later the owner of Allusions was looking to sell her business and relocate. While it was surreal, the timing couldn’t have been better, and I jumped at the opportunity with encouragement from my family and friends.

Now, 10 years later, with a beautiful facility and an incredible staff, I can’t imagine doing anything else with my life. I’ve been humbled and touched by so many of the men and women at Allusions and I look forward to the next 10 years!

Thank you for your continued support.

Boost Thin Hair with SiliconeThin, lifeless hair is one of the most common hair complaints, yet few women know the best remedy. Heavy conditioners just leave hair limp.

A better solution is to use products with silicone, such as dimethi-cone or cyclomethicone. These build the strands with a thin film, creating fuller hair that doesn’t look greasy.

Allusions recommends: Diamax by Nioxin which increases the diameter of each strand. Also proven to penetrate hair and make it manageable and full and will strengthen hair resilence against breakage. Take advantage of our 10% Coupon on page 4!

Questions & AnswersWhat’s your Hair IQ? Take this short Quiz and find out!

Q . Certain life events can alter the hair growth rhythm and cause massive shedding. True or FalseTrue. There are several circumstances that produce a “shock to the system” that alters the hair growth rhythm. As a result, as much as 30%-40% of the hairs can cycle into telo-gen. Three months later, hairs come out in a massive shedding (effluvium), especially near the front of the scalp. These include childbirth, high fever, sudden weight loss from crash dieting, surgery, severe illness, and stresses such as a loss, death, or divorce. Q . It is normal to lose 100-150 hairs per day. True or FalseTrue. Everyone loses some hair every day. Losing up to 100 hairs a day is normal and does not mean you are going bald. The scalp has some 100,000 hair follicles, most of which are producing hair at any moment in time.

Q . Baldness is inherited through a mother’s male relatives. True or FalseFalse. It is a myth that baldness is inherited through a mother’s male relatives. Actually, baldness can come from either side of the family, or both. Looking at your family can give you at best an educated guess about how you’ll turn out.

Q . Hair loss can be a symptom of which disease or condition? A) Thyroid disease B) Antibiotic resistance C) Parkinson’s disease D) All of the above

Thyroid Disease. Several health conditions, including thyroid disease and iron deficiency (anemia), can cause hair loss. While thyroid blood tests and other lab tests, including a complete blood count, of people who have ordinary hair loss are usually normal, it is im-portant to exclude underlying causes with sudden or severe hair loss.

Q . Chemicals and constant shampooing are usually to blame for hair loss in women. True or FalseFalse. Shampooing does not accelerate hair loss; it just removes the hairs that were ready to fall out anyway. Coloring, perming, and conditioning the hair do not usually cause hair loss. Burns or severe processing may cause hair loss and breakage. Styles that pull tight may cause some loss, but hair coloring and chemicals usually don’t.

If you’re experiencing hair loss and not sure what to do next-- call for a complimentary consultation to see how Allusions might be able to help you. We’re confidential and caring!

Question of the month:

Q. I’m outdoors a lot in the summer and I’ve noticed my already thinning hair starting to look worse. We’re vacationing in a sunny area this winter and I don’t want to stay inside. Any suggestions?

A. Too much sun can turn your hair into a brittle dry mop that breaks and splits easily. And if you already have thinning hair, you risk a sunburn on your scalp. Choosing hair care products with sunscreen provides some protection. A hat would offer some protection but could leave your hair looking flat!

Have you considered our exclusive “top of the head extensions” or a small “hair enhanc-er”? Either would help avoid the sunburn but also give you thicker hair instantly! They are virtually undetectable.

With a great looking, fuller head of hair, you may even find that you’ll want to be more active than you are now. The new addition of hair will enhance your current hairstyle, not change it, unless that is what you want. Plus it gives you a great deal of flexibility! To find out more about these exciting options, schedule a complimentary consultation to see how one of them might work for you!

AFTER

“I walked out of Allusions a new woman!”Two months ago my battle with hair loss ended 10 days before my daughter’s wedding. I was like most women with thinning hair, in complete and total denial. Every morning I dreaded the chore of applying every product under the sun to cover my se-verely thinning hair. I got so I could hardly look in the mirror.

With my daughter’s wedding day fast approaching, I knew I had to do something. I called Allusions for my consultation and Su-san graciously saw me right away. The consultation was discreet and Susan was so caring. After lots of tears and a conversation with Mary Jo, we came up with a plan. In a very short period of time I was transformed. Just a few days before the wedding I walked out of Allusions a new woman. Mary Jo and Rachel colored and integrated my new hair into a stylish new “do”.

Family and friends are still amazed at the transformation. I have had people tell me that at 55 years old I look 15 years younger and even thinner. I even had someone at the wedding ask if I had a facelift! I have had only positive feedback with many women telling how envious they are of my great hair. My husband told me just yesterday that he can’t even remember what I looked like before my “new hair”.

On a final note, thank you so much to all the wonderful and talented staff at Allusions. A word of advice to anyone with this problem, just go for it. I am sorry that I didn’t do this sooner.

When it comes to foods for healthy hair and beauty, vari-ety is the best way to go. An overall balanced diet of lean proteins, fruits, and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, fatty fish like salmon and low-fat dairy will help keep hair healthy.

Your hair grows about 1/4 to 1/2 inch every month, and the foundation of all of our new hair, skin, and nail growth is the nutrients we eat. If you eat a healthy diet, you will grow stronger and healthier cells throughout your entire body -- inside and out.

Not able to eat as well as you like? We can recommend hair products, hair vitamins and treatments to restore your hair to a beautiful texture. Two to try: Volume and Strength by Mediceuticals.

Volume: Promotes healthy, virgin hair quality. Repairs cutilcle damage and split ends through 5 shampoos. In-creases hair diameter up to 26% after one use!Strength: Stops most hair breakage in 120 seconds! Reduces thermal damage and restores moisture, shine and elasticity. Team Up for Alopecia AreataSeptember is Alopecia Awareness MonthSeptember is Alopecia Areata Awareness Month and their theme this year is “Team Up for Alopecia Areata” . NAAF is partnering with Major League Baseball teams to promote alopecia areata awareness in communities across the U.S. and Canada. Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease which causes the immune system to attack the hair follicles. In most cases, hair falls out in small, round patches about the size of a quarter.(See picture below) Many people with the disease get only a few bare patches. Some people may lose more hair. Rarely, the disease causes total loss of hair on the head or complete loss of hair on the head, face, and body. If you or a loved one are dealing with this disease, please call one of our caring staff mem-bers at 513.891.5411 and see how we might be able to help find you a solution.

OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTHWhy do you see so much PINK every October? October is the official Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is an annual campaign by major breast cancer organizations to increase awareness of the disease. This includes educating the public about early detection, the cause, diagnosis, treatment, and support for survivors.

DO YOU KNOW WHY IT’S PINK?

The first color ribbon chosen for breast cancer was not pink it was a peach color. Pink was chosen for its marketability by a cosmetic company and had little to do with femi-nism.

The colored ribbons cropped up around the time of Desert Storm and were linked to the song, “Tie a Yellow Ribbon round the ole oak tree”. Many people tied yellow ribbons around trees to remember our troops overseas. The ribbon symbol then extended to those people fighting AIDS. People wore a tiny red ribbon in remembrance for those fighting or dying from the disease. At the time women wanted to focus more research for breast cancer.

Pink was not the first color chosen, but it had better marketing capabilities. The pink colored ribbon was chosen by a cosmetic company (Estee Lauder) that wanted to spon-sor breast cancer awareness. The person who originally came up with the concept of the peach colored ribbon was Charlotte Hayley. Estee Lauder Cosmetics wanted to use her ribbon but she thought they were too commercial. When Hayley rejected the offer, Estee Lauder went ahead with a pink ribbon that became the symbol for breast cancer.

Allusions has many beautiful and natural looking solutions for women dealing with hair loss from chemotherapy. Please call us to schedule a confidential consultation at 513.891.5411.
