  • Welcome to Mary Lanning Healthcare Foundation’s Annual Report of activities and programs in 2018. Together, we made a difference, inspired by the vision of Alice T. and William H. Lanning to provide quality healthcare for families.

Faithful and compassionate friends like you raised more than $136,000 to purchase equipment for a designated separate space for pediatric rehabilitation. Business leaders, physicians, board members, alumni (from the Mary Lanning School of Nursing), and friends and family members of children who would benefit from these services stepped forward. Read the article to see how children’s lives are forever changed, thanks to charitable gifts from friends like you.

The stories and photos inside tell the power of working together to keep our hospital strong and independent. We are proud of our hospital, not only

as a center for quality medical care, but also as a leader in economic viability for central Nebraska and northern Kansas.

On behalf of the Foundation Board of Directors and all who support Mary Lanning Healthcare, thank you for your abiding friendship.

    Sincerely,

Jeff Kully, PresidentBoard of DirectorsMary Lanning Healthcare Foundation

    2018 Annual Report

P.S. If your family is ready to update your estate plans, please read Cindy and Dave Long’s

message about Mike Geis and the Thompson

& Associates process on the next page.

Four years ago, the Mary Lanning Healthcare Foundation Board of

Directors voted to partner with Thompson & Associates, a respected estate planning firm

that works with local financial planners and attorneys. Mike Geis, Thompson & Associates representative, shows people how they can meet planning objectives while maintaining their lifestyles, providing for their heirs and helping the nonprofits they love.

Mike comes to the Foundation one day a month to meet privately with friends who are ready to move forward with their plans to support the people and programs they care most about.

    Mike Geis

“If your family is like ours, 10 years come and go pretty fast!

We knew we needed to update our wills, but weren’t sure where to start. The kids are now adults and our careers have changed, as well as our appreciation for the organizations that have helped our family.

We called Mary Plock and asked her to reserve a private meeting with Mike Geis. His expertise and easy approach made the process so doable. In fact, we asked if he could help our parents with their plans.

Mike was wonderful with Mom and Dad and helped them create plans that were all about them and their lives.

About a year later, both of my parents passed away. Our family could mourn their loss without worrying about how Mom and Dad would have wanted us to manage their wishes. We were glad for the guidance Mike provided through the Thompson & Associates process.”

    Cindy & David Long

If you are ready to begin this important work, please call Mary Plock at (402) 460-5603 to schedule a private conversation with Mike and discover how the Thompson & Associates process

can help you and your family.

Thanks, Mike, for helping our family design estate plans that supported

the people and programs that mean the most to us.”

MLH Foundation and Sterling Connection hosted an estate planning seminar, Thursday, Nov. 15, at Mary Lanning Healthcare.

Topics included, “Truths and Myths About Wills and Trusts,” “Who Needs Power of Attorney Documents? Everybody!” and “Nebraska Real Estate Taxes: What Can YOU Do About It?”

Mike Sullivan, David Fisher and Adam Pavelka (l to r) present timely information at the estate planning seminar, Nov. 15, 2018.

Friends of Mary Lanning Healthcare Foundation joined with our Board of Directors to raise $136,453 to purchase special equipment for a designated separate space for pediatric rehabilitation.

In late 2017, the Mary Lanning Healthcare Rehabilitation Department saw significant increases in the number of pediatric patients. The original space was created for adults in March 2015. Since then, MLH added occupational, physical and speech therapists with experience in pediatric work. By summer 2018, as many as half of the outpatient rehab patients were children.

Recognizing the need for a child-centered space, the MLH Foundation Board of Directors agreed to raise $115,000 to cover the cost of equipment. The hospital agreed to take care of the cost of an appropriate site. In recent months, a larger space has become available and officials expect to move in September.

Thank you for helping to purchase important rehab equipment for one of the fastest growing departments at Mary Lanning Healthcare!

Tom Dinsdale Automotive of Hastings created a campaign known as “Community Drive, Keeps Giving.” Clues direct participants to a business where they draw playing cards for the chance to donate $300 to their favorite charity. Sarah Maendele, RN of Central Nebraska General Surgery, had the highest card and generously chose to apply her donation to the Mary Lanning Healthcare Foundation for the Pediatric Rehab Equipment project. Safe Kids South Central celebrates 20 years of programs to decrease unintentional injuries for children under 14. Safe Kids programs address child passenger, bicycle, fire and burn, home, teen driving and pedestrian safety.

Safe Kids is an independent coalition (through Safe Kids Worldwide) serving Adams, Clay, Webster and Nuckolls counties and partnering with Brodstone Memorial Hospital. They are funded with public and private support for a broad range of activities throughout the year. Mary Lanning Healthcare is the lead organization, providing paid and volunteer hours.

Because motor vehicle crashes remain the number one cause of death in children, Safe Kids’ Child Passenger Safety program is the largest program. Safe Kids hosts an inspection station once a month at the Lincoln Park Fire Station where parents and caregivers learn how to install and use their child safety seats and seat belts. Support for Safe Kids allows them to offer seats at a reduced price to families that qualify. Mary Lanning Healthcare provides and fits all babies who leave the hospital with a car bed (free of charge to qualifying families).

The car seat program in 2018 increased to 550 seats checked and 350 seats distributed. Safe Kids also provided education to area preschool and first grade children about the importance of car seats and booster seats during tours at Mary Lanning Healthcare.

Another important program is bicycle helmet safety. In 2018, Safe Kids fitted 250 helmets at reduced prices. The public is welcome to attend the Lincoln Park Fire Station monthly events for free helmet fittings.

Congratulations to Safe Kids as they celebrate 20 years of providing safety education and equipment to hundreds of area families.

Recognizing Our PartnersSafe Kids South Central recognizes these community partners: Mary Lanning Healthcare, Mary Lanning Healthcare Foundation, Hastings Head Start, Hastings Fire Department, Hastings Police Department, South Heartland District Health Department, Children & Adolescent Clinic, Brodstone Memorial Hospital, Healthy Beginnings, Healthy Hastings Coalition, Jerry Spady Chevrolet GMC Cadillac, LifeTeam and Central Community College-Hastings.

Safe Kids South Central on a mission to ‘Save One Child’s Life Every Day’

The Mary Lanning Healthcare Foundation serves as the fiscal agent for Safe Kids and stores boxes of child safety seats and children’s bicycle helmets. Preparing for a busy day at the Lincoln Park Fire Station are (l to r): Brandy Rogers, RN/Maternal Child Nursing; Carol Hamik, RN Director of Pediatrics, Float Pool and Outpatient Infusion Center and Director Liaison of Safe Kids; Amy Marshall, AAS, NRP, EMSI; Josh Marshall, AAS, NRP, EMSI; Casey Skalka, RN/Pediatrics; Dessa Farrand, RN/Maternal Child Nursing; Amanda Ablott, RN/Pediatrics, Safe Kids Project Coordinator; and Stephanie Wagner, RN/Pediatrics.

    THE STARS COME OUT!

The Foundation’s Board of Directors hosted the 27th annual charity gala, The Stars Come Out, Aug. 26, at the Lochland Country Club. Doors opened at 6 p.m. for cocktail hour, followed by an elegant buffet, recognition ceremony and a live auction.

Board President Roger Doerr presented a 2018 Lanning Award to Drs. A. Kathryn Anderson and Robert L. Anderson and Susie and Terry Klatt. The Foundation established the Lanning Award in 2010 to honor those whose support of and commitment to Mary Lanning’s mission exemplifies the Lanning vision.

The celebration included 30 corporate sponsors, who helped create a stellar celebration and contributed $35,744. Proceeds from the gala were directed to support the Endowment Fund at the Foundation.

Drs. Robert L. and A. Kathryn Anderson were honored with a 2018 Lanning Award.

Susie and Terry Klatt (right) celebrate with daughter Amy and her husband, Bob Stutesman.

    18TH ANNUAL CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT

The Mary Lanning Healthcare Foundation hosted the 18th Annual Charity Golf Tournament, June 11, 2018, at Lochland Country Club. Thirty-six teams filled the course for a day of great golf, prizes, food and support for our locally-owned hospital.

Proceeds of $23,563 were designated to the Pediatric Rehabilitation Equipment project.

Michael Krings, Teresa Podony, Jeff Hassenstab and Becky Sullivan placed first in the top flight.

    US Bank sponsored the MegaPutt.

Brian Stock represented Wells Fargo, presenting sponsor.

The Foundation proudly recognizes the following Mary Lanning Healthcare employees for their support of the Annual Fund, in-house campaign.

comments, please contact the Foundation at (402) 460-5600.

  • Members of the Frahm Legacy Society toasted the holiday season at the home of Dr. Jessica Meeske and Dr. Todd Pankratz.

The Legacy Society was established by the Foundation’s Board of Directors in 2016 with a vision to recognize and strengthen financial support. Claus and Thomas Frahm inherited and curated the Lanning family’s memorial. With that same spirit and inspired by Mary Lanning Healthcare’s 104 years of quality care, we invite new friends to join us.

Donors qualify for membership when they name Mary Lanning Healthcare Foundation in their will or other planned gift, or when their lifetime giving meets a threshold of $10,000 per household or $25,000 for organizations.

New members are announced at the annual charity gala, The Stars Come Out. Please see the Foundation’s website for a current listing.

    Months 4-5: Pick your team.

Think about and list whom you’d like

    to fill these roles:

    • Executor. This is the person you name to

carry out the terms of your will. Choose

someone who will be comfortable dealing

with your finances and investments, taxes and

record keeping. Also consider this person’s

    availability, general health and diplomacy.

    • Guardian. If you have minor children, you

should name a guardian of each child in

case your spouse doesn’t qualify or does not

    survive you.

    • Agent for durable power of attorney. Choose

someone to act on your behalf in financial

matters if you become unable to manage your

    own affairs.

    • Agent for health care power of attorney. This

person makes health care decisions on your

behalf if you are unable to make them.

    • Estate planning attorney. This person

ensures that your wishes are accurately and

clearly communicated through your will and

    legal documents.

Month 6: Meet with your estate

    planning attorney.

Review all the decisions and lists you’ve

made so far, and bring them when you meet with

your attorney. These will be a huge help as your

attorney evaluates your unique circumstances and

suggests ways to avoid paying unnecessary taxes

during your lifetime and at your passing. If you’re

considering remembering our organization in your

will, we’d be happy to meet with you and your

attorney to help answer any questions you may have,

    with no obligation.

    Month 7: Finalize your plans.

    Follow through with any additional

steps resulting from your meeting with

    your attorney.

Congratulations! You have taken the time to ensure that your family and favorite causes are

cared for far into the future. Continually review your

estate plan every three years, or whenever major life

changes or tax law changes occur, to make sure it’s

still the best plan for you and your family.

Getting started is often the hardest part, so we’ve

put together a simple plan to help you begin right

now. Every couple of months, tackle the next step

in the plan. If you keep at it, in just seven months

you will have the peace of mind that comes from

building a solid plan that protects yourself and your

    loved ones.

    Month 1: Tally your assets.

The first step in creating your estate

plan is taking inventory of personal

data. You should include the following:

    1. A list of your assets that shows current value as well as title (whether held in your name, jointly

or, in certain states, as community property).

    2. If you are married, a list of your spouse’s assets.

    3. Specifics about any debts and other liabilities. 4. A list of life insurance policies that indicates

the insured, the owner and the beneficiary

    of each.

If you’ve put off writing your will or making plans for how your estate will be distributed after

you’re gone, you’re not alone. Let’s face it, estate planning can seem like a chore. But—like

paying the bills or cleaning the house—it’s a task that, once completed, feels great.

    5. Names of your beneficiaries, including relatives and charitable organizations.

    6. The location of your will, securities and other valuable papers.

    Months 2-3: Make decisions

    about your will.

An up-to-date will serves as the

foundation of your estate plan. It expresses your

values and also effectively provides for the people

and charitable causes that are important in your life.

If you do not have a will, the state you reside in

will divide your estate according to its legal formula.

To ensure that your personal and family needs are

    satisfied, take these three steps:

    1. Decide which people and charities you’d like to benefit through your will.

    2. Determine what (and how) to leave your belongings to your heirs. Your gifts can take

various forms. They can be cash or specific

personal and real property. Or they can be a

percentage of the residue of your estate.

    3. List each person and charity’s name, the gift you’d like each to receive, and other details

about how you’d like the gifts completed.
