THAT 25-YEAR GAP You don’t need me to tell you we saw two out-standing performances over the weekend: first HawkWing went some way to redeeming his reputation ina hot renewal of the G1 Lockinge, then Funny Cideenhanced his reputation with an equally impressive 93/4-length score in the Preakness, leading manyobservers to declare that this one really has got achance to be the first Triple Crown winner sinceAffirmed. For followers of patterns, it would be aninteresting irony: there were 25 years between Cita-tion’s Triple Crown sweep in 1948 and Secretariat’sin 1973. Now there have been exactly 25 years sinceAffirmed in 1978. Funny Cide, of course, has much better claims thannumbers theory: he ran a Beyer 114 in the Preakness, and if he runs the same race in the Belmont, probablyonly Empire Maker has a chance to stop him. Yes, theBelmont is 12 furlongs, not 9 1/2; big difference. ButFunny Cide has three big things going for him. First, heis a rapidly improving three-year-old, peaking at exactlythe right time. Sometimes those horses just forget toquit. Second, he has the right style to see out theBelmont distance. Like the Kentucky Derby, theBelmont does not play to come-from-the-clouds closerslike we might think. Third, his fellow three-year-olds arenot an especially strong bunch. I know, I know, thatsounds like the knockers looking for something toknock, but it’s true. Empire Maker proved himself aclass horse with his wins in the Florida Derby and theWood (over Funny Cide), but otherwise this crop lookslike it has quite a few nice horses with few stars. Mindyou, Funny Cide doesn’t know any of this, just like hedoesn’t know that Distorted Humor was a sprinter andhis damsire Slewacide stood in Oklahoma.

The Young Guns: European Version... I’ve spent much of the spring tracking the sec-ond-crop North American sires (first foals 2000). Thelast time we looked at the cumulative earnings figures,we could say that at least eight of these young sireswere looking quite good. That’s still the case, butFunny Cide’s Preakness win pretty much means hissire, Distorted Humor, has gone beyond recall as thisgroup’s leader. It’s great news for WinStar Farm, whichstands him, and it’s pretty safe to say his 2004 studfee will reflect these successes. That’s two Grade Iwinners, including (so far) a dual Classic winner, in hisfirst crop, after all. Partially because the European season gets underway later, we haven’t caught up yet with the situationwith the younger European sires, so today we’re pub-lishing the top 15 European second-crop sires andfirst-crop sires as well, because there has been someaction on that front. Last week we discovered how few sons of Danehillwith runners there actually are at stud in Europe justyet. Danehill Dancer, whose first crop of four-year-oldsincludes Lockinge second Where or When, has risenfrom being a cheap sprint sire to one of the leaders ofhis sire group (European third-crop sires), with a studfee now of i30,000. Similarly Danetime, who nevereven won a stakes race--he was third in the G1 JulyCup as a three-year-old and third in the G1 HaydockPark Sprint Cup as a four-year-old--is also advancingDanehill’s claims as a sire of sires. With 28 winnersthus far and progeny earnings over £577,000, he stillleads the triple Group 1-winning miler Desert Prince (24winners, over £515,000) among European second-cropsires. It seems just a matter of time before DesertPrince takes over. He has seven stakes horses, after all, whereas Danetime has just three, but, for the moment,Danetime still holds the lead. Compton Place (22 win-ners, over £496,000) is still less than £20,000 behindDesert Prince in third.

(Bill Oppenheim cont. from p. 3)

But the two most remarkable stories among thisgroup may well be the sires occupying the fourth andfifth slots at the moment. Air Express, by Topsider'sson Salse, progressed from winning the Italian andGerman 2000 Guineas (both Group 2 races) to an upsetwin in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. at Ascot late in histhree-year-old year. Averti, a son of Warning, was ahard-knocking sprinter who raced into his eight-year-oldyear. He never won a stakes until he was six, thoughhe placed in seven others, including a second in the1997 G1 Prix de l'Abbaye at age seven. These two hadpretty small crops. Whereas Danetime, Desert Prince, and Compton Place have had 67, 70, and 56 runners, respectively, Air Express has had only 14 runners, andAverti 27. Air Express has 12 winners from those 14runners, including Airwave, who beat Russian Rhythmin last year's Cheveley Park and is a leading candidatefor sprint honors this year. Averti has 15 winners, including six stakes horses, second only to DesertPrince’s seven among this sire group so far.

Euro First-Crop Sires... As it's not even the end of May yet, it's of coursevery early days to be making any pronouncementsabout who is and who isn't, among first-crop sires. Butthere have been a few developments, possibly signifi-cant, thus far. Daggers Drawn won the G2 Richmondand G2 Champagne at two, but didn’t win again--justlike his sire Diesis and grandsire Sharpen Up. His year-lings last year looked the part and sold accordingly. When these figures were compiled Monday, he had fivewinners of seven races already, then had his sixthwinner Monday night. Intikhab, a son of Red Ransom, was only out of the first two on his final career start, his only run at five. He looked a real class horse whendestroying his field in the G2 Queen Anne S. at RoyalAscot as a four-year-old, and he has come out firing, with four winners already, and another win since Mon-day. So Daggers Drawn and Intikhab are the early lead-ers. Off to the quickest start in France is Verglas, win-ner of the G3 Coventry--always a good race--at RoyalAscot as a two-year-old, and second in the 1997 G1Irish 2000 Guineas. cont. p. 5

But Verglas had a largely fruitless campaign in Amer-ica later at three and four. The same could be said of DrFong, winner of the 1998 G1 St. James’s Palace S. atRoyal Ascot. He made seven starts in America at threeand four, and didn’t win, though he did run second intwo Grade IIs, the Oak Tree Derby and the Strub. Stravinsky, champion sprinter of 1999 when, as athree-year-old, he won two Group 1 sprints, the JulyCup and Nunthorpe, stands in Kentucky, but does havetwo winners thus far in Europe and is looking prettypromising from early returns. Cape Cross won the G1Lockinge at four and the G2 Queen Anne at five; he hasfour winners thus far. Fasliyev was unbeaten in fivestarts at two, including three group race wins at sixfurlongs: the G3 Coventry at Royal Ascot, then the G1Phoenix S. in Ireland and G1 Prix Morny in France.Orpen, a half brother to Peace Rules’s sire Jules byLure, won the G1 Prix Morny the previous year and wasthird in the Irish 2000 Guineas at three. There’s a lot ofracecourse form among this group, so it will be interest-ing to follow their progress as the stakes races getunderway.

In winning the Preakness S., Funny Cide not onlycompleted a sweep of the first two jewels of the TripleCrown for himself, but also a GII Black-Eyed Susan/GIPreakness S. double for sons of Forty Niner. A cham-pion two-year-old who also won the GI Travers S. andwas beaten only inches in the Kentucky Derby, FortyNiner was a very consistent stakes sire (he now has 44stakes winners from 516 starters), but was exported toJapan due to a shortage of scorers at the very highestlevel. He was more or less anointed as the next sire ofsires in 1998, when End Sweep took the championfreshman sire title while setting a new world record fortwo-year-old winners in a single season, and other sonsTactical Advantage, Twining and Marked Tree all siredstakes winners. Two years later another son, GoldFever, looked set for stardom after getting the out-standing filly Gold Mover in his first crop. Oddlyenough, through a variety of circumstances, this “firstwave” of Forty Niners didn't end up having anythinglike the impact that might have been anticipated. EndSweep, who events revealed to have been potentially avery good sire, was exported to Japan and died lastyear, while 2002 also saw the premature demise ofTactical Advantage. Twining followed End Sweep toJapan, but following some good efforts from cropssired prior to his export, he was repatriated for the2002 season. He now stands at Vinery Kentucky andhas sired 19 stakes winners from his first five crops, including graded-stakes winners Two Item Limit, TopHit, Connected and Dawn of the Condor. Gold Fevernever really capitalized on his bright start and was sentto New York, having sired just three stakes winnersfrom his first three crops.

Since then, however, there has been something of aForty Niner revival, with some of the best runners com-ing from unexpected sources. Apart from the siresmentioned above, at least another 17 Forty Niner sonshave sired stakes winners. This very varied collection isheaded by Distorted Humor, whose first crop includesnot only Funny Cide, but also the Grade I-winning fillyAwesome Humor; the recently deceased Jules, whoseson Peace Rules finished third to Funny Cide in theKentucky Derby; Chilean-based Rich Man's Gold, whose son Lido Palace was a Chilean Triple Crownwinner and won back-to-back renewals of the GI Wood-ward S. when brought to the U.S; Luhuk, who startedvery well in Argentina, where his first crop included theextremely rapid Avanzado, a multiple graded stakeswinner in North America who is now in Kentucky; andthe Florida pair of Cyberspace--sire of this year's multi-ple graded-stakes winning filly Cyber Secret in his firstcrop--and West Acre, an unraced horse whose secondcrop has supplied Florida filly star Ivanavinalot. Roar, the sire of this weekend's Black Eyed Susanheroine Roar Emotion, was one of Forty Niner's betterperformed and better bred sons. Winner of a maidenrace at Saratoga at two and the GIII Swale S. and GIIJim Beam S. at three, Roar owns an extremely impres-sive pedigree. He is a half brother to the GI Futurity S.winner Eastern Echo (sire of this year's GISW BuddyGil), and to graded-stakes winners Blare of Trumpets(Fit to Fight) and Yell (A.P. Indy). Roar's dam, theMGSW Northern Dancer mare Wild Applause, is a sisterto the MGISW Hero's Honor and half sister to severalother good stakes winners, headed by Kentucky Derbyvictor Sea Hero. Incidentally, since Roar is by a son ofMr. Prospector out of a sister to Hero's Honor, he isbred on somewhat similar lines to hot young secondseason sire Elusive Quality, who is by a son of Mr.Prospector out of a Hero's Honor mare. Roar and the previously mentioned Gold Fever retiredto Lane's End Farm for the same breeding season(1997) and like Gold Fever, Roar has also moved on tonew pastures, in his case, the Rancho San Miguel inCalifornia. In his first two Lane's End crops, Roar siredtwo stakes winners. The MSW filly Madame Roar wasin the first, and SW & MGSP distaffer Roaring Blazewas in the second. The third crop, in addition to RoarEmotion, also includes the MSW colt Coach Jimi Lee.Cont. p. 7

(Pedigree Perspectives cont. from p. 6)

Roar has also been shuttling to Argentina for theSouthern Hemisphere breeding season, and like severalother sons of Forty Niner, has done well with his SouthAmerican runners. He has been represented by at leasteight stakes winners, five of them graded, in Argentina, and currently sits second to Southern Halo on the Ar-gentine sire list. Roar Emotion is from a family which has improvedrapidly in the last two years. She is the fourth foal andfirst winner for her dam, the Capote mare EmotionalOutburst. A daughter of the SP mare Joy to Raise (byRaise a Man), Emotional Outburst is a 3/4-sister to thevery talented Mayakovsky, who is by Capote's sonMatty G out of Joy to Raise. On his two-year-old debut,Mayakovsky broke the Saratoga track record for 5 1/2furlongs when scoring from subsequent GI Breeders'Cup Sprint runner-up Thunderello. A good second tothe more experienced Came Home in the GI Hopeful S.on his next outing, Mayakovsky was sidelined by aninjury for the rest of the two-year-old season. He re-turned at three to take one of the fastest renewals ofthe GIII Gotham S., but again his season was derailedby problems in training. It was recently announced thatMayakovsky, who added a turf allowance win to hisrecord this year, would retire to stand the 2004 breed-ing season at Mill Creek Farm in Stillwater, New York. Prior to the appearance of Mayakovsky and RoarEmotion, the only black-type victory for a horse in thefirst three dams of this pedigree was that earned byRoar Emotion's third dam Joy to Tell, who captured theAtokad Futurity. The fourth dam Flower Bonnet wasstakes-placed and is ancestress of numerous (mostlyminor) stakes winners, although one of her granddaugh-ters, Diorissimo, was a G1SW in South Africa and alsoproduced Scented Royal, a champion two-year-old fillyin that country. Flower Bonnet's third dam Nectarine isa stakes-winning sister to the multiple champion sireBull Lea, who was the sire of such champions as Cita-tion, Coaltown, Armed, Twilight Tear, Bewitch, TwoLea and Real Delight.

We mentioned that both Funny Cide and Roar Emo-tion are by sons of Forty Niner, but the similaritiesbetween their pedigrees doesn't end there: both sires--Distorted Humor and Roar--are products of a FortyNiner/Northern Dancer cross, and both dams are bysons of Seattle Slew. What is rather interesting is thatwhile Mr. Prospector/Seattle Slew in general has been avery successful cross, it had not been working at allwell via Forty Niner. In fact, prior to Funny Cide andRoar Emotion, the cross had produced only two unre-stricted stakes winners, neither of them graded. Withthis in mind, we would be tempted to say that themodifying effect of Northern Dancer in the broodmaresire line of Distorted Humor and Roar has been impor-tant. With the specific case of Roar Emotion, we canalso note that Roar’s fourth dam Searching is a memberof the La Troienne family, and is a 3/4-sister to thesiblings Busher and Striking, who both appear in the dam of Seattle Slew.

HAWK SOARS IN THE RATINGS Hawk Wing (Woodman) was yesterday handed anofficial rating of 137 pounds by the British HorseracingBoard’s handicappers, making him the joint highest-rated horse since Dancing Brave in 1986. Rated onlyfour pounds behind that champion, the Aidan O’Brien-trained colt’s 11-length success in Saturday’s G1Juddmonte Lockinge S. at Newbury is also rated thebest mile performance since El Gran Senor took the1984 G1 2000 Guineas. Mile handicapper DominicGardiner-Hill explained to sportinglife.com yesterdaythat “mathematically, Hawk Wing’s run could be any-thing you want to make it if you look at the previousform of those in behind him.” Runner-up Where orWhen (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) was judged to haverun to 119 pounds, which is four pounds below therating he achieved in the G1 Queen Elizabeth S. atAscot in September. “We obviously had reservations--such as the way the race was run with Hawk Winghaving it all his own way, the performances of those inbehind and the fact that it’s still very early in the sea-son,” he added.” Where or When was yesterday de-scribed by trainer Terry Mills as “brilliant” after Satur-day’s race and is set to re-oppose if Hawk Wing linesup in the G1 Queen Anne S. at Royal Ascot June 17.“We’re going for different tactics--we’re going to havea little bit of a street fight next time,” Mills said. “We’renot going to let Hawk Wing have everything his ownway.”
