Third Sunday of Advent December 14, 2014

THE THEME TODAY IS CHRIST, THE LIGHT AND JOY OF THE WORLD. John the Baptist had a central role to play in the coming of the Savior. His role, as today’s Gospel puts it, was to be a witness to speak for the light. The light in question was Jesus. Isaiah 61:1-2a. 10-11. The prophet declares that he has been sent by God to usher in the age of Salvation for Jerusalem and all God’s people. Jesus used this prophecy to announce the purpose of his own ministry. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-24. Saint Paul takes a very practical line, telling the Thessalonians how they should live as they await the second coming of Christ. John 1:6-8. 19-28. John summons all to faith in Jesus. He declares that he himself is not the light, and tells the people that, although not recognized by them, the light (Jesus) is ready present among them. We can’t be a witness for the light if we are living in darkness. We have to be living in the light. A good life is a strong and effective witness, and in itself is a proclamation of the Gospel. When religious practice is divorced from life, a vital element is missing. But when religious practice leads to deeds, a very effective witness is giv-en. No witness reaches others as persuasively as the witness of those who do what Jesus commanded. The task is not only for individual Christians, but also for the Christian community as a whole. It is easier to witness to Christ as a member of a supportive community. The Spirit of God helps us build up the Kingdom of God on earth. EL TEMA DE HOY ES CRISTO, LA LUZ Y LA ALEGRÍA DEL MUNDO. Juan el Bautista tuvo un papel central en la venida del Salvador. Su papel, como el Evangelio de hoy pone, fue que iba a ser un testigo para hablar por la luz. La luz de quien se refiere era Jesús. Isaías 61: 1-2a. 10-11. El profeta declara que ha sido enviado por Dios para marcar el comienzo de la era de la salvación a Jerusalén y a todo el pueblo de Dios. Jesús usó esta profecía para anunciar el programa de su propio ministerio. 1 Tesalonicenses 5: 16-24. San Pablo tiene una línea muy práctica, diciendo a los tesalonicenses cómo de-ben vivir mientras esperan la segunda venida de Cristo. Juan 1: 6-8. 19-28. Juan convoca a todos a la fe en Jesús. Él declara que él mismo no es la luz, y les dice a la gente que a espaldas de ellos la luz (Jesús) está listo presente entre ellos. No podemos ser testigos de la luz si estamos viviendo en la oscuridad. Tenemos que vivir en la luz. Una bue-na vida es un testimonio fuerte y eficaz en sí mismo en la proclamación del Evangelio. Cuando la práctica religiosa está divorciada de la vida le hace falta el elemento vital. Pero cuando la práctica religiosa conduce a los hechos, se da un testimonio muy eficaz. Ningún testigo llega a nuestros contemporáneos persuasivamen-te como el testimonio de aquellos que hacen lo que Jesús mandó. La tarea no es sólo de un cristiano individual, sino que es para la comunidad cristiana en su conjunto. Es más fácil dar testimonio de Cristo como miembro de una comunidad de apoyo. De este modo el Espíritu de Dios nos ayuda a construir el Reino de Dios en la tierra.

FROM MY HEART (NOT MY DESK) I would like to continue to express my gratitude to all the parishioners of St. Joseph. Today especially I would like to say thank you to Deacon Rafael Romero and his marriage preparation team for their retreat of last week-end and this weekend. My second point to highlight is last Sunday’s food sale from GRUPO DE ORACION. It was another record: they sold $ 2,000.00. THANK YOU to all of the volunteers and to all who participated and enjoyed the great food. My third point to highlight is all of the families and RE-SPONSABLE LAY MINISTRIES and those who accom-panied us in the Novena of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Thanks for the coffee, pastries (pan dulce) and all your service to the community. Also I would like to thank all of the donors who have contributed in any way to make pos-sible our celebration for the Feast of Our Lady of Guada-lupe.
