A large southeasternUS company producescalcined kaolin clay, awhite clay used bypaper companies as afiller and coating toincrease the opacityand ink absorption ofcertain paper stocks.In the productionprocess, the clay, inslurry form, is heated to 1800̊ F, changing its mineral structure andimproving whiteness, brightness, opacity, and glossiness.Pumping the clay too rapidly causes shear and thickens the slurry.The company had been using centrifugal pumps to transfer the clayvery slowly, but the pumps required constant maintenance toreplace leaking seals. By switching to Watson-Marlow Bredel hosepumps, the company was able to pump the clay mixture at high-er speeds without shear-induced thickening. The hose pumps alsoeliminated the problems and maintenance costs of leaking seals.

As part of bulb degassing operationsat Osram Sylvania’s Hillsboro, NewHampshire plant, Watson-Marlowpumps are used to apply a highly corrosive solution of zirconium andalcohol to miniature automotive lightbulbs. Pump speeds are programmed

to meet the different throughput rates of the plant’s four applicationmachines. The tubing easily withstands the damaging effects ofthe zirconium solution.

Accurate and repeatable metering ofprocess fluids into dispersion mills iscritical in achieving uniformity fromone batch of paint pigments to another.Because of their ability to provideconsistent, reproducible flows at lowvolumes, Watson-Marlow peristalticpumps were chosen to replace doublediaphragm pumps at BASF’s Michiganpaint mixing plant. The pumps requireminimal set-up time and maintenance.The sealless design eliminates the need to clean the pumps therebyavoiding the costs, health risks, and environmental issues associatedwith cleaning solvents.

Watson-Marlow Bredel pumps are used in a wide variety offluid transfer, metering, and dispensing applications across arange of processing industries. Following are examples ofapplications in which Watson-Marlow Bredel pumps havesucceeded where other pumps failed.

Easy cleanup, high flow rates,and precise metering are thekey reasons why EastmanKodak uses Watson-Marlowperistaltic pumps at its Rochester,New York, plant. Photographicchemicals are dissolved in asolvent and the solution is thendispensed in extremely preciseamounts under computerized

control into bottles using Watson-Marlow pumps. Minimal pumpmaintenance consists of periodic flushing of tubing or, in some cases,simply replacing tubing in which polymer buildup has produceda blockage. Quick, easy cleanup is important since solutions areconstantly changing and tubing must be cleaned before each change.

CHEMICAL

A west coast electric utility generatesa portion of its total power demandwith geothermal steam. The steamcontains sulfur which must bestripped from the off-gas beforeit is released. In this process, anextremely corrosive high sulfurslurry is pumped to a filter belt presswhere excess liquid is removed andsolids are deposited in a cake tank. The solids are then reslurried,pumped to a melter, melted, and the sulfur is decanted into a storagetank. Faced with excessive maintenance to repair damaged andcorroded pump parts, the utility tried several types of pumps beforeinstalling Watson-Marlow Bredel hose pumps. The pumps have provenexceptionally reliable and have dramatically reduced maintenanceand repair costs.

Sony Manufacturing CompanyUK uses Watson-Marlow peri-staltic pumps in the productionof its Trinitron® television tubes.As tubes are moved into positionby an automated productionline, sensors signal the pumpsto begin feeding a solution ofcarbon GA-37, potassium silicate, and silicon carbide to a spongehead which coats the necks of the tubes. The peristaltic pumpsreplaced gear pumps, significantly reducing maintenance costs andeliminating the need to import costly spare parts.

MINING

At a large Nevada mine, a concentratedlead slurry is transferred for shipmentto another plant for additional refining.Containing concentrations as high as60%, the slurry is very heavy andabrasive. The mine recently installeda Watson-Marlow Bredel hose pumpto transfer the concentrated slurry at arate of about 30 gpm at pressures above 50 psi. The centrifugal pumpsthat were used previously were constantly shutting down becausethe required flow rates were too close to shutoff. The mine also foundthat the low flow rates chewed up the stators of progressive cavitypumps, requiring constant maintenance and excessive downtime. TheWatson-Marlow Bredel pump easily handles the low flow rates andpressures and has significantly reduced maintenance times and costs.

Precise, consistent, repeat-able flow rates and minimalmaintenance are the primaryreasons why Boise Cascadeswitched from diaphragmpumps to Watson-Marlowperistaltic pumps for dyeaddition. Overall shade lossesat Oxford Specialty PapersDivision were costing asmuch as 60 tons of off-quality paper a month. In addition, stripping,cleaning, and repair of the diaphragm pumps were causing excessivedowntime and lost productivity. Since installing the Watson-Marlowpumps, losses due to color irregularities have been negligible andproductivity has increased substantially. Maintenance now consistsof only scheduled tubing changeovers which take only minutes.

Precise metering of dyes is critical inthe production of the “highly dyed”(day-glo and vibrantly colored) papersmade by Simpson Paper. EighteenWatson-Marlow pumps are currentlyin service at the company’s Pomona,California mill, metering brightlycolored dyes and optical brighteners(to the paper machine system). Thepumps replaced piston pumps whichclogged frequently, causing down-time, lost production, and highmaintenance costs.

PULPAND PAPER

When a highly viscous and abrasiveadhesive used in the manufactureof various automotive componentskept causing gear pumps to seize,Ford Electronics replaced the pumpswith Watson-Marlow peristaltic pumps.The highly viscous (25,000 cps)adhesive, which contains metal, ispumped in two parts by two Watson-Marlow pumps and is combined in astatic mixer as it is applied. The pumps run 16 hours per dayand provide precise, repeatable flow rates which ensure the optimalmix ratio of the adhesive components required to maximize adhesivestrength and performance. Pump wear has been virtually eliminated,and now, when the adhesive cures within the pump, cleanup is assimple and fast as replacing the tubing.

ADHESIVES

At Waddington’s, a UK-based printer,the varying requirements of differentprint jobs necessitate that varnish bepumped from a container to a coatingtray on a multicolor printing press withprecise control across a wide range offlow rates. To achieve a consistent,high-quality finish, the varnish mustbe pumped gently to avoid foamingand entrapment of air bubbles. Thedouble-diaphragm pumps formerlyused were expensive to maintain and

their inconsistent flow rates produced poor quality coatings. With thelow-shear Watson-Marlow peristaltic pumps chosen to replace thediaphragm pumps, coating quality has improved sharply and the timeconsuming job of stripping and cleaning pumps has been eliminated.

PRINTING

McCorquodale Envelopes, Wolverton,Buckinghamshire, England, produces and printsapproximately 7 million envelopes every day.In the printing process, inks are pumped fromcontainers into the chambers of each of 12Winkler and Donnibar printing presses. Severalyears ago, after experiencing unacceptably highdowntime and ink color changeover times, thecompany switched from impeller pumps to

Watson-Marlow Bredel peristaltic pumps. The pumps have dramaticallysimplified and shortened the changeover from one color to another.The process (which used to take hours) now takes only minutes andconsists of simply changing a tube.

McCorquodale originally installed smaller 500 Series pumps. Thecompany recently purchased several new close-coupled pumps, citingtheir exceptional performance and lower purchase and lifetime costs.

SEMICONDUCTOR

A mid-Atlantic manufacturer ofcapacitors and other electroniccomponents. In its productionprocess, the company pumps ahighly abrasive ceramic slurryconsisting of about 10 differentpowders, a dispersent, and waterinto an attrition mill which mixesthe ingredients and breaks uplumps. Watson-Marlow Bredel

hose pumps then pump the slurry from the bottom of the millthrough cooling chambers, and redeposit it at the top of the mill inorder to maintain the desired slurry temperature. The pumps, runconstantly at flow rates of 3-5 gpm, and have virtually eliminateddowntime for maintenance. The company also uses smallerWatson-Marlow Bredel tubing pumps at other locations in itsprocess for metering and dispensing chemicals.

Accurate and repeatable flow rates are theprimary reasons why Pfizer Inc’s Vigo Plantin Terre Haute, Indiana uses severalWatson-Marlow pumps to feed sugarnutrients to lab-scale fermentors. Controlledby a timer and process signal, the pumpsprovide consistent flow rates from 1 to 7ml/minute. Process fluids are confinedwithin the tubing thus ensuring completesterility of all flows to the fermentor, and the gentle pumping actiondoes not harm the shear-sensitive fluids.

At Bristol-Myers Squibb Company’sNew Brunswick, New Jersey plant,Watson-Marlow pumps help assureabsolute sterility in various fillingoperations. The pumps, which areused in the production of contrastagents for intravenous injection priorto MRI, X-ray, and similar examinations,have also improved productivity.Filling of vials that once took 15-20 minutes per batch is nowaccomplished in seconds. The continuous, sterile, nonmetallicpathway through the pumps assures complete protection fromparticulate generated by motors as well as other contaminants.The gentle action of the pumps has no adverse effect on theproduct. Pumps also provide precise metering and maintaintheir calibration, eliminating the need for recalibration midwaythrough a run. Built-in microprocessor controls fill accurately atthroughputs ranging from .5 ml to 13 liters per minute.

A contract research company whichperforms independent safety andefficiency evaluations of pharma-ceutical products, Pharmaco LifeScience Research uses a Watson-Marlow pump to fill vials with smalldoses of diluent. The microprocessor-controlled pump dispenses 2.2 ml of

sterile diluent into each vial with an accuracy of 0.5%. Selectedfor its high accuracy, long-term repeatability (without need forrecalibration), and flexibility, the menu-driven pump can bequickly reconfigured for dose size, number of doses, and timeinterval between doses.

Genetics Institute, Inc.,Andover, Massachusetts,uses Watson-Marlow peristaltic pumps in the production of recombinantblood and bone proteins toassure that process fluidsand buffer solutions arehandled and moved with-out contamination. As mediaare transferred from pressurevessels through membranesfor separation filtration, fluidsare totally contained withintubing and protected from

contact with pump parts and other sources of contamination. Inother processing operations, probes continuously sense pH valuesof solutions and signal Watson-Marlow pumps to precisely metertitrin as needed.

BIOTECHNOLOGY PHARMACEUTICALS

Niro Soavi manufactures high-pressurehomogenizers which are widely usedin the biotechnology, pharmaceutical,cosmetics, toiletries, food, dairy, andchemical processing industries. Thehomogenizers reduce particles or drop-lets in fluids to submicron size to createa stable dispersion. The process involvesforcing a liquid at high pressure throughminute passages in a special valve and iscritically dependent on the positive

displacement pump. The company has selected Watson-MarlowBredel high-pressure CIP/SIP hose pumps for use on several of itshomogenizers, citing dependable operation and extremely lowmaintenance as key factors in their decision.

At Bess Eaton Doughnuts of Torrington,Connecticut, Watson-Marlow pumps preciselymeter a mixture of yeast, water, and sugarinto doughnut machines where the mixtureis combined with flour and soy oil. Accuratedispensing is critical to product quality. Toomuch of the mixture produces a soggy productand too little, a dry product. The pumps, which maintain theircalibration, have replaced far less efficient pumps that requiredcalibration every day. Cleanup is as simple as flushing the pumpswith water. Watson-Marlow pumps are also used to meter the soyoil into the doughnut machines.

Sidari Italian Foods, Cleveland, Ohio, usespasteurized eggs as an ingredient in pastadough. The eggs, which are monitored understrict quality control procedures, are extremelyshear-sensitive and must be pumped gently toavoid separation of solids, thereby maintaininga uniform starting ingredient. A single-headWatson-Marlow pump now produces flowsthat could only be produced by a dual-head competitive pump. TheIP55 pump is designed to withstand FDA-mandated washdowns.

FOOD PROCESSING

Four Watson-Marlow peristalticpumps carefully meter liquidvitamins onto several kinds ofdry breakfast cereal at Weetabix’sClinton, Massachusetts, processingplant. The vitamin solutions areabrasive and can crystallize undercertain conditions. Watson-Marlowpumps were chosen to replaceanother manufacturer’s peristaltic

pumps because of their ability to withstand the abrasive solutionand to provide accurate, repeatable flows.

A canning operation located near SanFrancisco uses a Watson-Marlow Bredelhose pump to transfer sliced peaches fromholding tanks to its canning line. The pumpsoperate at 14 rpm, transferring a 50/50mixture of peaches and water at a rate of150 gpm or 9 tons per hour. The companyhad been using centrifugal pumps, but wasexperiencing a high percentage of damaged peaches. The softpumping action of the Watson-Marlow pump eliminates shear,keeps the peaches intact, and has dramatically reduced the amountof damaged or unacceptable produce.

The company also likes the dependability and low maintenanceof the pump. Processing of perishable produce is very time sensitive.The Watson-Marlow Bredel pump runs continuously 24 hours a day,7 days a week for the entire 7 to 10 week canning season.

BREWING

In its process, a leading U.S. brewerpumps a highly abrasive slurry ofdiatomaceous earth. The companyhad been using a diaphragm pumpto meter the slurry, but was experi-encing unusually high downtimedue to abrasive wear. The companyrecently replaced the pumps withWatson-Marlow Bredel hose pumps.

The pumps, which run continuously at 6 gpm and 73 psi, havedramatically reduced maintenance and all but eliminated downtime.

Based on their success with the diatomaceous earth slurry, thecompany installed 6 hose pumps to transfer an abrasive slurry ofwaste yeast. The pumps replaced rotary lobe pumps which requiredexcessive maintenance to replace mechanical seals and lobes.The brewer is now looking to replace several other types of pumpsfor live yeast recirculation flavoring and coloring addition, andactivated charcoal slurry with Watson-Marlow Bredel hose pumps.

At the Elizabeth Arden Research andDevelopment Center in Trumbull, Connecticut,a Watson-Marlow pump transfers oil and waxesheated to 95˚C to kettles as part of a pilot plantemulsion-making process. The emulsions, whichare used in the manufacture of cosmetics, mustbe precisely metered to ensure product qualityand prevent spoilage. The pumps ensure accurate,repeatable flow rates that can be readily increasedfor full-scale production. Pumps are easily changed

over from one liquid to another by changing tubing or flushing itwith water.

COSMETICS

At the Massachusetts WaterResources Authority (MWRA) Deer Island Wastewater Treatment Plant, influent is receivedthrough several 4- to 6-mile pipelinesunder Boston Harbor. After preliminaryprocessing, the influent goes througha scrubdown to reduce hydrogen sulfidecontent from as much as 250 ppm toless than 0.1 ppm. Watson-Marlow Bredelhose pumps are used in this process totransfer and meter sodium hypochlorite,sodium hydroxide, and sodium bisulfate. After experiencing highdowntime, high maintenance costs, and disappointing performancewith diaphragm and other types of pumps, plant engineers switchedthe process over to the Watson-Marlow Bredel pumps. Used in otherprocesses within the plant, the pumps provide trouble-free service andextremely low maintenance. MWRA engineers are now evaluatinga 100 mm duplex hose pump for another process.

At a Carolina wastewatertreatment plant, 5000-6000MLSS sludge is pumped intoa diffuser air flotation thickenerwhere polymer and dilutionwater are added. Throughflocculation, the sludge isthickened to 60,000 - 70,000MLSS and wiped off into a wet

well. Watson-Marlow Bredel hose pumps then pull the thickenedsludge from the bottom of the wet well and pump it to a filterbelt press where excess water is removed. The dewatered sludgeis then sent to a pug mill where it is mixed with kiln dust or limeand allowed to thicken and dry. According to plant officials, theWatson-Marlow Bredel pumps not only handle the highly viscousslurry with no trouble, they have no seals to replace, significant-ly reducing maintenance costs.

To ensure the high quality of drinkingwater in several English water districts,Severn Trent Atec continuouslymonitors filtered water for crypto-sporidium bacteria. Watson-Marlowpumps, operating 24 hours a day inthe cold, damp conditions of outdoorkiosks or filter houses, deliver constant

volume water samples to turbidity monitors. Watson-Marlow IP55ingress-protected pumps were selected because of their ruggedness,reliability, and ease of maintenance.

Dramatically reduced main-tenance and resistance tocorrosive chemicals werethe chief reasons in selectingWatson-Marlow pumps forservice at the NiagaraCounty Sewer District #1

wastewater treatment plant in Niagara Falls, New York. Withno check valves to clean, there is no need to disassemble thepumps, and cleanup is as simple as rinsing or replacing thetubing. Marprene® tubing supplied with the pumps resists thecorrosive effects of chemicals such as sodium hydrochlorite andferrous chloride used in wastewater treatment. Of the threepumps presently installed, one works under automatic controloff a flow meter in a remote area of the plant. Two new ferrouschloride feeding points are now being installed as part of apump station intercepter extension project.

Process effluent from a polybutyleneresin manufacturing process atShell Chemical, Taft, Louisiana, istreated with a polymer flocculantbefore being discharged into theMississippi River. The sticky, viscouspolymer solution would build upand clog the check valves of thediaphragm pump which had been used to meter the solution atlow flow rates (cc/min.). The diaphragm pump was replaced witha Watson-Marlow pump that does not clog and provides precisecontrol at low speeds.

WATER AND WASTE TREATMENT

Pump corrosion and maintenance wereconstant—and costly—headaches at theIpswich, Massachusetts MunicipalWater Department. Excessive downtimeand the cost of replacement parts forcedthe treatment plant to replace diaphragmpumps with Watson-Marlow peristalticpumps for metering chemicals such assodium hypochlorite, aluminum sulfate, sodium aluminate, alum hydroxide,

fluoride, and potassium hydroxide. With consistent, accuratefeed rates the pumps now meter the chemicals under processcontrol to match raw water flow. Enclosed in IP55 cases forwashdown protection, the pumps run 12 hours a day. Sincethe installation of the pumps, maintenance costs and downtimehave nose-dived from 20% down to 0%.

When GE Plastics, a producer ofpolycarbonate resin pellets, experi-enced problems pumping effluentcontaining waste plastic strips up to10” long, they switched to Watson-Marlow Bredel hose pumps. Thestrips were becoming trapped inthe double-diaphragm pump thecompany was using to transport theeffluent to a filter press. Constantlyblocked, the diaphragm pump wasin effect, acting as a filter. TheWatson-Marlow Bredel hose pump transfers the effluent easily,virtually eliminating downtime. It has also improved the effectivenessof the filter press by as much as 35 times.

When a large Texas constructioncompany needed several pumpsto transfer a cement mixturecontaining water, sand, sulfatecellulose, and additives at pres-sures of 200 psi and flow ratesof 300 gpm, they called theirWatson-Marlow Bredel repre-sentative. The rep recommend-ed a unique duplex hosepump,which consisted of two pump-heads mounted on a singledrive shaft. Each pumphead has two shoes 180̊ apart which com-press a hose to produce flow. With the pump shoes staggered at90̊ intervals, the pump is capable of producing higher flow ratesthan a single pump, but with much smaller power and spacerequirements than two pumps. The staggered pump shoes also dra-matically reduce pulsation in the hose, producing a much smootherflow. The pump easily transfers the abrasive mixture and requiresonly minimal maintenance to change hoses every 6 months.

A. Lockett & Company, textile printer/finisher in Salford, England, replaced anair piston pump used to transfer printpaste with a Watson-Marlow peristalticpump. The paste, which contains anaqueous dispersion of pigment colorsand white fillers, is pumped at flow ratesfrom 1 to 40 gallons per hour. Because

Watson-Marlow pumps are reversible, self-priming, and can run drysafely, excess paste is pumped back into the container at the end of aprint run and waste has been reduced at start-up. Color changeoversare accomplished quickly and easily by changing the tubing.

B. Braun Biotech, the world’s leadingsupplier of fermentors for use in biotechand pharmaceutical processing, typicallyuses no less than three Watson-Marlowpumps and/or pumpheads in all of theirstandard products. Most cement trucks cannot orwill not handle small batchesof concrete. However, trucksmanufactured by MargarIndustries, Inc., of Eaton,Colorado, include a patentedmixing system for producingsmall batches as needed. Thesystem bolts onto the truckand uses a Watson-Marlowperistaltic pumphead to

precisely meter various chemicals, which affect the concrete’sstrength, performance, and drying time, into the concrete mix. Thepumpheads require only periodic tubing changes and are unaffectedby the dirty abrasive environment.

After extensive testing, M&O PerryIndustries, Inc., Corona, California,approved Watson-Marlow pumps foruse on automatic filling and closingsystems. The contamination-free pumpsare used in biotech and pharmaceuticalapplications which require sanitaryfilling at rates of 10 to 50 fills per minuteand where sterility is a must.
