Memorial Day Mass

May 28th at St. Barbara Cemetery

2:00 p.m.

Today is Pentecost, the birthday of the Church, through the descent of the Holy Spirit up-on the apostles, and Mary, in the Upper Room (where the Last Supper occurred). The mani-festation of the Spirit occurred through "tongues of fire," called "tongues," perhaps, because the flame of a candle more or less looks like a tongue. A "candle" is something that is "kindled" (set afire). And the apostles were set on fire, with zeal, and boldness, to proclaim to the whole world, what God was and is trying to say and do, to us and for us, through the "mission" (or sending) of the Eternal Word into the world, through the Incarnation, which culminated (Phase One) with the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus; and which will have its final culmination (Phase Two) with the return in glory of Jesus at the end of time to judge "the quick and the dead." Meanwhile, the "mission" (or sending) of the Eternal Spirit into the world came into its own. Yes, both the Son and the Spirit have been at work as the right and left hands of God, so to speak, since the "beginning" when "through him (the Word)" all things were made, even as there "hovered over the waters" the Spirit of God (Gen 1 and Jn 1 need to be seen in a single perspective). Jesus told the apostles to "go forth" and "make disciples of all nations," until "the end of the world," and gave them a great big head start, when "devout Jews from every nation" were gathered in Jerusalem, and heard Peter on Pentecost. Jewish tradition included pilgrimage to Jerusalem for Passover (barley harvest, in remembrance of the Exodus from slavery in Egypt), Pentecost (wheat harvest, 7 weeks later, in remembrance of the giving of the 10 Command-ments on Mt Sinai), and Booths (grape harvest, in September, and remembrance of the 40 years of wandering in the wilderness on the way to the Promised Land). Those traditions brought the world to the apostles, and the 3,000 baptized that day took the word back home. Christianity, in a sense, became a world Church, a world religion, from "day one." The Church is by God's design the Spirit-filled community of faith, in communion with the apos-tles and Peter as head of the apostles, and comes into being and grows where people "catch on fire" with the Holy Spirit, the "pledge" (or "down payment" or "first installment") of our "inheritance," as we are being "bought back" (redeemed) from the bondage of sin, towards the true freedom of the children of God. This weekend we are proud to have with us Deacon Stephen Kenyon. He was ordained Saturday, May 19, at the Cathedral in Portland by Archbishop Sample. Stephen was a semi-narian in residence for his pastoral year during 2016-17. He loved the richness of St Joseph's Parish, and was frequently present in the School, at meetings of every kind, at all the Masses (English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Latin) and the events of all parish ethnic communities, and wanted to learn everything he could. The reality of Pentecost, and of the Church composed of "devout Jews from every nation," is quite visible here and now in our beautiful parish commu-nity. By way of information, there are seven sacraments (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist; Penance, Anointing of the Sick; Holy Orders and Matrimony). Holy Orders is one sacrament, but it has three "degrees." They are deacon, presbyter, and bishop (presbyters and bishops are both "priests"). In the early Church, a local faith community, was typically urban (Jerusalem, Samaria, Antioch, Ephesus, Corinth, etc.) and had an "overseer" [epískopos, bishop], who had two groups of "helpers": the "elders" [presbyteroi, "priests"] and "ministers" [diakonoi, "deacons"]. They were like the "right" hand (presbyters) and "left" hand (deacons) of the bish-op. The presbyters formed the "council" of the bishop and helped with internal affairs, gov-ernance, keeping things together (when the Church spread to the suburbs, the presbyters were sent as vicars of the bishop to preside over the Eucharist in the "parishes"). The deacons were the "eyes and ears" of the bishop, getting out and about, interfacing with those on the periph-eries, such as the sick and the poor, and so on. Thus, each group of helpers tended to "symbolize" in their ordained identities, two "dynamics" in the Church: the presbyter, its "centripetal" ("communion") task, maintaining "connection" among members, and across the generations through mediating the tradition and teachings of the apostles; and the deacon, its "centrifugal" ("mission") task, making sure no one is "overlooked," and also that no one is deprived of hearing the Gospel (through the centuries, this "missionary" dimension of "evangelization" was taken on and extended in a big way through religious orders). No sur-prise, then, when John Paul II in Christifideles Laici (1989) 32, says that the yin and yang of the Church is that of communion overflowing into mission, and mission overflowing back into communion, as the Vine and the Branches (Christ and his Church) grow and flourish.
