D. Reflection

What is medical terminology? Medical terminology is the primary language used in the

medical field. It is a way of communication and understanding what a health care

professional is speaking, writing and even help a doctor figure out the assessment and plan

for a patient. Medical terms are very resourceful because once the words are broken down it

is easy to identify what the medical term means, pertains to, & help categorize the specialist

in that study. For example, If a patient comes into the emergency room they may say “I have

pain and irritation when I wear my shoes, difficulty standing which prevents me from

working, my toenail looks funny and is changing color, it is ugly and embarrassing, and

looks like its spreading.” A health care professional may say that the individual has

“subungual onchomycosis” which is an abnormal condition of a nail fungus under the toe

nail. The next question that would be asked is, how do we know what this condition is? We

know this by breaking down the term into parts called Prefix, Roots, and Suffix. All medical

terms have a suffix and most medical terms have a root and prefix. The suffix and sometimes

the root when applied is the main substance of the medical term or as I like to call it the meat

and potato of the medical term. In this case the prefix in subungual is “sub” which means

below. “Ungu” which is the root of the word which means nail and the suffix would be “al”

which stands for pertaining to. If we put all the word parts together the word becomes

“subungual.” When breaking down the second medical term we identify the suffix or the

root whichever one is easier to identify. In this case we can see that there are two roots that

are present. The two roots that are present are “oncho” which means nail and “myc/o” which

stands for fungus. The last part that is left is identifying the suffix which would be “osis”

which means condition or abnormal condition. With knowing the word parts we can now put

Page 36: 7.17.14 HOLDENEBONY MEDTERM REVISED4.27pm

SHORTENED TITLE 36

them together to form the word “onchomycosis” which is defined as an abnormal condition

of a nail fungus. We now know that we are dealing with a patient who has a nail fungus of

the toe. The doctor may now try to figure out treatment which could be antifungal creams or

ointment; oral medications to help with the infection as well as discomfort, surgery or even

laser treatment are all ways to help treat the condition. The doctor in the emergency room

may even refer the patient to see a Dermatologist which is a person who specializes in the

study of skin. The main thing to know about the medical terminology is we see how

important it is to identify the problem, treatment, and specialist so spelling is just as

important as the meaning of these words. There are a lot of terms that are similar in spelling

and sound the same but have totally different meanings. For example “abduction” and

“adduction” sound the same but have two different meanings. The meaning of “abduction” is

to move away from the midline of the body. As for the word “adduction” which means

moving towards the midline. The wrong spelling could lead to the wrong treatment,

diagnosis, and even prescription that are provided to the patient. Learning medical

terminology can help assist students in their future education by making a better

understanding of the material in their future classes. The classes that most students may take

are anatomy and physiology, medical office systems, billing and coding classes,

pharmaceutical and even electronic records. If a student can grasp the information from

medical terminology it will make their learning process easier. Medical terms are just the

introduction to the medical world these terms are to help enhance the learning process not

only in the future of their education but in the real work place as well. The medical world is

forever changing and being able to understand, write, read and translate these terms and

apply them to the everyday world is bonus. As a medical administrative assistant it is highly

Page 37: 7.17.14 HOLDENEBONY MEDTERM REVISED4.27pm

SHORTENED TITLE 37

important to know the medical language, new laws, and software. When reading a patient

chart or file it is good to know what the patient was being seen for what procedure or

diagnosis was given so that it can be input into the system correctly and to make sure the

patient and the insurance company is billed properly. Medical administrative assistants need

to know the language so that they can adapt well into the medical atmosphere. It is important

to understand what the doctor has written on a chart or prescription as well as taking

direction. When working at the front desk of a doctor’s office or hospital being able to listen

and translate the information from the patient to the healthcare team it makes thing much

easier to understand and makes the office run smoothly. If I could give advice to anyone who

is pursuing the medical career I would say that it is not as hard as it looks if you follow the

steps by breaking the term down, identifying the prefix, root, and suffix, determine the

combining form and its specialty, and then putting it all together to form the medical term. If

you take your time and really understand what it is you are looking for you can’t go wrong.
