“The Quartet of Four Cultures” is the continuation of an artistic project started in
2012, which combines the musical cultures of Poland, Germany, Russia and Israel –
the four cultures that in the 19th century created Lodz. Four experienced musicians
with the orchestra conducted by Daniel Raiskin, the chief conductor of
Staatsorchester Rheinische Philharmonie in Koblenz and the Arthur Rubinstein Lodz
Philharmonic will play pieces created by famous composers. A new piece inspired by
the text of Rywa Kwiatkowska titled “The Prayer” for choir and string orchestra was
composed by Sebastian Kondratowicz. The performance by the Orchestra during the
commemoration of the liquidation of the Litzmanstadt Ghetto is a symbolic
expression of the idea of tolerance, diversity and respect for people, and also
cooperation among nations.

ACCOMPANYING EVENTS - LODZ
22-31 August 2014
22 August 2014,
FRIDAY
2:00 PM - 3:00 PM THE OPENING OF THE EXHIBITION OF THE STATE ARCHIVE
IN LODZ „SAVED FROM DESTRUCTION – ALBUMS FROM THE LODZ GHETTO”
Venue: Galeria 87 Urzędu Miasta Łodzi (87 Gallery of the City of Lodz Office) | ul.
Piotrkowska 87
Organizer: Archiwum Państwowe w Łodzi (The National Archives in Lodz)
The archive materials rescued from the Litzmannstadt Ghetto and stored at the
National Archive in Łódź are collected as Elder of the Jewish Council in the Łódź
Ghetto from 1939-1944. These form a basic source base for research into this closed
area of Łódź during the German occupation of the city in World War 2. Many years of
work on securing, developing and digitising the archives will shortly be concluded by
copies of them being made available online.
The iconographic material is of particular documentary value. Much of this is already
known from exhibitions, films and publications. The last four albums are currently
undergoing conservation, they have never been presented before due to being so
badly preserved. Hiding files, sometimes by burying, damaged them. However, this
did allow them to survive, as they were not discovered by the Gestapo.
We are making the documentation of the conservation work and images of these
documents available for the first time. These are on cardboard with traces of damp
and spillages, and other minor blemishes. It was a great challenge to preserve the
photographs, used in large amounts in collages, which also contain coloured graphs,
drawings and inscriptions describing the structure and functioning of the ghetto.
